Magnets: Glueing and Removing Magnets - extracting, reinserting, reversed polarity

Apr 27, 2006

    1. Hey, I have a frustrating little issue that I don't know what to do about. I have a Dollmore Narsha with the magnetic head cap. Yesterday I noticed something weird about the magnet and when I messed with it I realized that the magnet from the face side of the head had come out and was stuck to the magnet from the back part of the head. I easily pulled them apart but then when I stuck it back in the now open socket, I realized that the magnets were repelling rather than sticking and that I had put it in backwards. I have tried to dislodge it using an exacto knife, a set of dental pics and a baby pin but I can't seem to unwedge it.

I don't really want to completely destroy her head but I've got to figure this out.

I'd appreciate any suggestions you guys might have.

    2. what kind of glue did you use to put the magnet in? you could try hot water becareful not to get any of the other magnets soaking in the hot water. Good Luck!

    3. Need to know what type of glue. Acetone will dissolve superglue. But may also eat away the resin. And be careful with face-up. So test it. Thinner and tiny metal spatula is used for removing hot glue.

    4. 8V Hmm, I've had just plain soaking it in warm water repeatedly and wiggling in there with a toothpick work for magnet removing. I wouldn't recommend anything super hot, as heat can cause the resin to temporarily soften and you may warp the resin while trying trying to remove the magnet.

    5. The weird thing is, I didn't use any glue at all. I just pushed it back in. Maybe some residual glue was left and is keeping it sticky. I'll try the toothpick. Hopefully the wood will compress enough to push in there better than the metal probes I'd been using. The metal ones just seem to serve to wedge it in there further.

Thanks for the answers so far!

    6. I'd go with the warm water, even just warm (kinda hot) tap water my soften the resin enough to allow you to pry the magnet free.

    7. i usually use hot water, but if the head have face-up this could messy a bit, did you try with a stronger/biggre magnet?
Maybe it could pull it out, or try to deglue the other magnet in the haedcape, soaking in hot water, then glue it back on the opposite side.

    8. I did this. I got a stronger magnet and wiggled it back out. It took a while, but I didn't damage her as the hole was too small for me to even get a needle in.

    9. I recommend Barmy Bunny's solution. I've had to do that a couple times with my dollmore Miro.

    10. Where do you get a magnet that strong? I'm guessing refrigerador magnets aren't going to do it.

    11. A rare earth magnet would do it, haha.

    12. I went to a model shop. You know, miniature trains and dolls houses that kind of thing. They had some.

    13. I know that people use magnets to attached wings, horns, etc to dolls.

The magnets are put inside the doll's body. My question is how is this done?

If they're glued in, what kind of glue is used? It seems that the magnet couldn't be put on a bed of glue because the glue would be on the face of the magnet. Wouldn't that affect the ability of the magnet to cling to it's mate? So, if they're glued in place, how is it done?

Are they put in with putty, like eyes, with the putty surrounding the magnet and covering the back? But putty doesn't harden, so will they stay in place?

Are there other ways to attach the magnet to the inside of the body?

Thanks for any advise anyone can give me!

    14. I haven't done this, but I would think you would dremel a little bit into the resin so that the pairs can be closer together (but don't drill so much that it goes completely through). Superglue won't affect the magnetic field if you have a thin layer. And make sure that you have the polarities match up (nothing worse than getting it wrong). This is all how I would do it if I were to do such a mod. Putty is too weak to keep, I feel like.

I'm sure, if you continue to look around the modifications forum, that you'll find better info. Good luck on your mods! ^^

    15. Thanks!

This is for a tiny, FS Soso though, so using a dremel would be impossible. I want to attach wings to her. I guess I should have said that! LOL!

    16. I know that somes magnets aren't put inside the body at all. You can just tape them on, and so long as they're covered by whatever is attached, or a wig, if you're attaching horns, no one's the wiser.

Putty might work, in theory... I mean if the magnet itself is strong enough to not need the resin to be sanded down.. Though It would probably be rather temporary, and might slide if you simply let it sit..

edit: Oh, for wings? You could probably tape the magnet inside the body, if you can work your fingers in there ^^

    17. For the mod, do you plan on changing the character at all at a later time or sell? I think, since you are doing wings and it will cover it up, if you can find a bit small enough, drill from the outside on the back, instert glue/putty/whatever into the hole and there you go.

Another idea, if you want to be able to remove the wings is make something like those wings kids wear and use clothes to cover up the straps. That way, you can forgo the mods and have something non-permament.

    18. I've had this problem recently, and I just went and got another magnet, a bit stronger, and used the opposite side to get it out of the headcap. In my case, the glue had worn out, though, so it was no problem... ·/////·

    19. I can't see getting a magnet inside a SoSo. The magnets in SoSo's hands, for instance, are cast into the resin. You'd be much better off putting wire on the wings and then wrapping them around her body, or a ribbon, or having the wings attach to snaps on her clothes.

    20. hmm.. im not sure if you have considered this, but have you tried to remove the other magnet, instead of the one you seem to be focusing on? it may be easier to remove the other on the side of the head without the face than risk damaging the face-up if you have one, or the face in general.

perhaps try the warm water method and if not you know that there is glue holding the other magnet on the other side in place so you could try to remove that...

otherwise, the stronger magnet idea sounds like a plan. try some DIY stores too. im pretty sure they would sell magnets if your toy/train store you visited didn't have the right ones.

    21. I've heard great things about neodymium magnets. They're apparently strong enough to work through quite a few layers, for instance if you have some inside the head cap, and some outside of a wig, attaching ears for instance.

      http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D32-N52

Excuse that the link goes to a specific magnet, it's one I plan to buy for making horns, but you can see how tiny those things are.

    22. The internal magnets have come out of my bambicrony girl and also the wings that I purchased to go with her (these are the white cloud wings rather than the acrylic looking wings). Do I need a special glue to re-fix them or will normal Uhu work? I was slightly concerned about the glue reacting with the resin. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

    23. Hi, smudge, it should be good as long as the glue is waterbased, and strong enought to keep them in place.
My boys head cap magnets came of some time ago, and I just fixed it with a hotglue, so that's allso one possibility.
      Hope this'll help.

    24. People often use superglue as well for magnets. Just make sure the polarities are the right way before putting them on permanently!

    25. i think hot glue would work the best. it holds better and is safe. Super glue could work too but i never have any luck with it.

    26. a little tip for making sure your magnets are facing the right way to click together, use a marker to put an X on the side that goes into the hole so if you drop the magnets when separated, you'll still be able to figure out which side goes in without having to stick them together and pry them apart again.

    27. :doh So it has occured to me that my dear Prince/King Lyr's [RS mu] horns don't stay on too well... :|
they're held on with magnets, is it at all possible to replace these magnets with stronger ones?
apologies if this has already been asked, I didn't find anything in the search. *_*

    28. My new doll, the soom little shaman had the magnets the wrong way in. I put both the head cap and the buffalo mask in a washing up bowl with warm water from the tap. left them about 10 minutes and they came loose enough to flick out with a butter knife. I was almost worried they wouldn't budge but they did. I've used blue tac for now until I decide what I want to use as a more permanent glue. probably school style super glue.

Thanks alot everyone for your suggestions! it was other's ideas of warm water that allowed me to do this! wooo!

    29. I have an AOD basic mini lan and I just noticed one of her head cap magnets is missing.
Its not to big an issue but her head cap keeps falling off if the wig isn't on.
What would you guys suggest for a replacement?

    30. for a temporary fix I've been using a very small amount of sticky tack. My DoC head closes the old way w/o the magnets so instead of fighting with the S-Hook, I've just been using sticky tack (white Uhu Tac). When you do this, make sure you mess with the tack for a bit so that it's close to the consistency of freshly chewed gum.

here's someone suggesting what I do for my DoC's head as well as using rubber band if you don't want to do the sticky tack method

    31. you can get replacement magnets here http://www.kjmagnetics.com/ just figure out what size you need. they are really fast shipping, and very friendly and helpful.

    32. Where can I buy the proper adhesive/glue for magnetic parts in dolls?

Admittedly, I'm not sure what is normally used, so this would be a question of that, too. If possible, please mention both online/offline places I can buy it (I'm hoping it isn't a special order kind of thing, but I really don't know. ^^)

    33. I have this same question, one of my magnets came off on the head cap.

I am not so sure on this, but I have been reading in other threads that most people use super glue or hot glue. :/ I'm just not sure on what to use in case the glue ingredients are harmful to the resin. One type I have been seeing the most recommended to use is something called a 2-part epoxy (though I have no idea what it is).

I'm sorry I'm not really helpful.

    34. This is probably wrong... but I just used Aleene's Tacky Glue, the acid-free kind. ^^ It's holding up well, but I guess you can use super strong stuff like E6000 or GorillaGlue but I don't know if it'd stain/damage the resin, and some adhesives are quite toxic. I don't think hot glue gun would hold the magnet to the resin very well, I have a feeling it'd just peel off. ^^"

    35. I doubt you'd want to use a 2 part epoxy to put magnets back in. It's not a glue. It's more a sculpting material, one of the most common brands is called Apoxie Sculpt. In theory I could see using it to get magnets back in but glue would seem a much more logical choice.

    36. I use Aleene's brand Tacky Glue, personally ^^ It actually works really well and doesn't harm the resin.

I've had two of my three boys' headcap magnets pop out and somehow this glue seems to hold them in really well. Which says a lot when you witness firsthand the strength of Soom's headcap magnets @_@

    37. Is PVA (white glue) strong enough vs the zomg Soom magnets? I just got a Soom Appini, and I don't have any super glue in the house, and I thought I'd be clever - I have pH neutral PVA that I use for bookbinding. It's pretty much the safest glue ever. But wow are those Soom magnets strong! So strong I've already chipped one while trying to pry them apart from each other. I got them apart and then *wham* they slammed back together hard enough to chip one in two places!

I know it will take a while to dry, but I'm already having trouble with one of the inside headcap magnets flipping out of the wet glue onto the other if it gets bumped at all. I finally gave up and soaked them all out with hot water, scrubbed the glue off the resin and now I'm trying to decide if I want to get the PVA one more shot or just suck it up and buy super glue. I also have a hot glue gun, but the ear magnets fit pretty tight in their little holes...I don't know if there is room for both glue and magnet.

Edit for resolution: The PVA worked but it took like 3-4 days to dry fully.

    38. Since my BBB Espree head doesnt have magnets in the head/headcap, so a few days ago, I got some magnets, and I attached the magnets via water-soluble glue onto the head/headcap, after it dried, I tested it out, but the magnet popped right out and stick to the other magnet that's still attached to the head >.>

So I tried a more permanent solution, superglue. Guess what? I SUPERGLUE'D one of the magnet backwards >.> I thought it was the right side, but it wasnt!!! I tried the freezing method, but it didnt work! I also tried using nail polish remover to dissolve the superglue, but no luck so far D:

So is there any other way to get the magnet out? :doh

    39. Hmm if nail polish remover isnt working what you can do it try to get something small like a tooth pick or a needle and carefully attempt to carve away at the glue. You can usually make this an easier process if you dip the end of said toothpick or needle into a little bit of nail polish remover to help the chipping away process.

Also, Im not sure if this would work or not but I know it works on stubborn hot glue... freezing didnt work so maybe try heat?

But I know the first solution works as the same thing has happened to me a time or two. :doh

    40. I tried the needle with nail polish remover method just now. All it did was chip the sides of the magnet hole >.> And did nothing to the magnet at all. I guess I use too much superglue on the magnet. :doh

I'm gonna try the freezing method again, if it doesnt work, I'm gonna SAW the headcap OPEN. My dad suggested that method, but of course, I'm not crazy enough do it, LOL.

    41. Have you tried to see if you can get the OTHER magnet out of the HEAD side? If you can, BB, that might work better than continuing to fight with the headcap. Just remember, no nail polish remover, and no boiling, as if either goes wrong you could damage the face-up. Freezing, if needed, should NOT hurt the face-up unless the sealant is already damaged...but if it's still just the water soluble glue, a bit of a soak in some room temperature water should loosen it, then the flat side of a butter knife against the magnet should give enough pull to gently pull it out of place. Then flip and re-glue that one.

    42. Seriously, what Ayas said. Try heat and try it on the cap itself, not the face part.

    43. Actually, MCPO, Ayas said to try and remove the one in the HEAD not the cap. Since the cap one isn't coming out, try to flip the other magnet instead.

    44. Ayas Thanks for the suggestion! But I'm not going to do it, I had a VERY hard time with the headcap, and I dont want to repeat it. I had scratched, cracked and did alot of damage to the headcap already! I'd like to avoid doing those damages to the main head if I can >w< I'm just have to suck it up and live with it -_____- This will teach me to inspect things carefully before doing anything permanent to a doll! D:

    45. Then have you gotten the head cap magnet that you super glued out? If not the one with the water-soluble glue might be easier in the end, as you don't have to damage the head to get THAT out like you do the other one in the head cap.

    46. Rubbing alcohol. Supposedly you can remove super glue from plastic
surfaces using it. Do a search " how to remove super glue?" which is
how I found it @ ehow.com What it says is it will soften the glue, I
Know I've heard of people cleaning their doll with rubbing alcohol &
a magic eraser so I guess it safe for resin. Best of luck.

    47. "nail polish remover" it's always a VERY bad idea because their components can damage the resin, do you know the little screwdrivers used by small works like fixing clocks and stuff like that??, it will break a bit the line of the hole for the magnet in the head but it's the only solution I've ever find, force it between the magnet and the resin, until you are able to get the tool on the bottom of the magnet and do some strength to pull it out, but do it gently, otherwise you might brake the doll, after it's out use sandpaper to try to align the surface of the place you where working....hope it helps... *_*

    48. Oh noes, its so terrible when that happens!

This happened to my doll's headcap a few days ago and it almost brought me to tears. I eventually levered the magnet out if its socket by running that part of headcap in hot (NOT boiling) water with a cutting knife. It took me 5 minutes, and a lot panic attacks on my part, but it worked.

(I tried the freezing method that others have suggested, but I wasn't patient enough to wait hours for a result)

    49. Rather delayed response, so you may have figured it out already

Boiling DOES work. The previous owner of my IS Toki decided to superglue his torso and hip joint together (I see why now that I got the super glue removed but still ERG). I tied string to his hip and lowered it into the hot (cooled from boiling water) and left it in for just a minute pulled it out and it popped apart no problem. I will also like to say this is with rather thick pieces of resin I didn't see any problems with the resin. Though, with somethign so small I bet running it under hot water like someone mention previously (darn me I didn't get the name before editing XP) would work better.

I never heard of freezing, but the glue was really in there so I doubt that would have worked for me. Acetone wouldn't reach the majority of the glue as well... got the residue from the surface off nicely.

    50. I did this with one of my four hand magnets... Going to try the rubbing alcohol! I'm not sure I want to pop the hand in just boiled water because it might be too fragile! Any results to report?

    51. I still think that if the water is hot enough running it under a faucet will work. The goal is to loosen the hold of the superglue. From there you might be able to pry it out then clean up the remaining glue with nailpolish remover. I had to work with about a quarter inch to a half an inch all around the hip superglued so the only method I had was to dip it in really hot water. I have heard that this method is used to shape fingers. So I'd be careful with too excessive prying because the resin will be soft.

I'll add this to my notes. Do not superglue magnets XD or at least be very careful while doing so... Knowing me... I'll still glue it backwards.

    52. I used the hot running water method the other day to switch the magnets in a pair of wings and it worked great. I held the portion of the wing holding the magnet under the running water for a few minutes, then carefully worked at breaking up the glue at the sides of the magnet with the tip of a mini screwdriver (it did dent the resin a little bit, but not too badly, and not visible at all when the wings are worn). Every few minutes I'd hit it again with the hot water for about 30 seconds, then tap it on the fridge or the other wing's magnet to try to loosen it some more. Took me around 15 minutes or so per wing to remove the magnets. It took a little effort, but the glue definately did soften with just those brief exposures to hot running water.

    53. so a few day ago when I was trying to take his head off to change his clothes
I realized the part where the top of his head came off so loosely
then I saw the magnet came off and was stuck with the other half of the magnet

I tried sticking it back on to his head with white clue
but it wasnt strong enough to hold the magnet
and the megnet came off again when I put the top part beack to his head
because the other magnet was too strong and it attracted the magnet ...

      what can I do ?

    54. Use super glue, or a two part epoxy glue. Make SURE you have the magnet with the right side out, so that the magnets will attract eachother. Then put some glue into the magnet hole, and put the magnet back in. Give a good 24 hours for the glue to fully set before putting the headcap back on. That way it's less likely the other magnet will pull the newly glued in magnet back out.

To make sure you have the right side out, I put the magnets together to test which side I need out, then I place the magnet on a butter knife, with the side that needs to be facing 'out' so it can stick the other magnet down on the butter knife blade. Then I put the glue in the hole, and use the butter knife to put the magnet in place, before SLIDING the butter knife off the side of the headcap/head. Sliding is important, because if you PULL the butter knife off instead of sliding it to the side, it'll just pull the magnet back out again.

    55. thank you ! I try that tonight when I get home ^^
I thought about using super gluee too but
I thought the chamicals in it might melt down the resin ^^""
I guess I worry too much xdd

the other magnet didn't pull off the one which I glued on :D
everything is back to normal now
      thank you ! (:

    56. Hello,
I recently received my Fay from Doll leaves and I was going to have her wearing her wings on semi permanent basis but I realized that the left side magnet is neither deep enoughs nor in the right place.
Not exactly noticeable here but I don't seems to be able to get a better shot.

In this shot the arrows are pointing the center of each magnets.
And here's a pics of the inside :
I'll need to move the left magnet because aside from the place, it can barely hold the wing.
Does anyone know, how can I safely take the magnet out ?

    57. It looks like you could remove it, but physically moving the hole to the left could prove more difficult then the actual removing of the magnet. Not impossible mind you but much more difficult.
I'd try, because its on the inside, a q-tip dipped in acetone to try to dissolve the glue. Or if your not a fan of acetone warming (with a hairdryer on low and not holding directly over the resin) and cooling (in the freezer)the torso piece to loosen the glue and then prying carefully with a pointed object. Preferably something thicker than a scalpel or exact-o knife, more a thick needle if its using super glue, should help pop the magnet out.

Perhaps making a separate magnetic "backpack" under the clothes with a significantly stronger magnet, a bar rare earth magnet rather then 2 disc magnets, would allow for a more semi permanent wearing of wings.

Or if they are going to be semi-permanent, maybe attaching them in a different way not with magnets would be a viable option?

      Edit: Forgive my rambling answer!

    58. I try acetone yesterday morning it doesn't work cause the magnet was had to the raw resin so partially cover.
So this morning I start to shave the resin away from the magnet which is actually bigger than I though.

    59. I just got my girl yesterday, and it seems the magnets are so strong, it pulled the magnet out of the joint. It'll stay in the joint when I put it in, but when I put the hand on it just pulls it out. What do I do?
      :doh
