Lost my damn mind (“impulse” buying)

Jan 15, 2026

    1. Ordered Huajing Yuzhi just now, just at the end of the first week of the school semester despite telling myself it can be my reward for getting through the entire semester… help…..:aeyepop:

HOWEVER I’m ecstatic to have my first true BJD, the doll I’ve been eyeing for so long, otw finally!!! I’ve been wanting to get into bjd since the early 2010s so it is a long time coming overall… :whee:

Are any others like me who’ve wait for such a long time and then have a moment of weakness out of nowhere and order more than you should have all at once? I hope I’m not the only one lol

    2. I came back from a 7 year hiatus in 2024 and impulse bought 4 fairyland dolls and 1 Soom doll that year. It started out as just one for my birthday. Then it was just another because I’ve always wanted a bunny doll and she was on the MP, then another for a Christmas present to myself, then another because he was an artist doll I’d been following for that year and I HAD to have him on layaway, THEN I got a Christmas bonus right before Christmas and saw another doll that I could use with that money…..so yeah. I’ve definitely impulse bought a few. Maybe. :sweat:sweat

    3. Ah I’m glad to hear I’m not alone, our trajectory seems similar too. My boyfriend gifted me a blind box bjd for christmas, knowing I have been interested in them for like forever, and ever since then I havent been able to get having a “full size” (in this case 1/4) doll out of my head. I think I’m gonna force myself to cool it on any more dolls until at least my birthday but little accessories or other blind boxes here and there can’t be too bad, right?

    4. I got our of hiatus and impulse bought 4 definitely regretting right now lol. Also just sent 2 out for faceups so my wallet is hating me hard

    5. lol I got into those stupid labubu’s and bought two of them AND a blind box mjd sugary girls for my Christmas this year because I knew what they were but didn’t *know* what they were so I 100% see you!

I think blind boxes are so much harder to not impulse buy cause they’re a lot cheaper. $40 as opposed to $400+! I “just have to move a few things around to fit them all and it’ll be fine” right!

    6. I got some labubus when they were at the peak but I sold some off before the price drop so I got most of my money back thankfully.

I still prefer quality items than blind box doll right now.

Just need to find some time to scrub all my old dolls that I bought cause they're as yellowed as a banana

      Bought:
      Volks f-12 2002
      Dream of doll zen 2004
      Unoa light (resin) 2005
      (Non-bjd) Qlywork Bebe bisque

      Collecting the ancient dolls lol

    7. Ahhh! Lucky! I love the Qlywork Bebe!!

    8. I find that I won’t be interested in new dolls for months and then all of a sudden all my fav companies start making knock outs and I want them all :XD: I do try to restrain myself, but I did impulse one doll last year. And I love her! So no regrets. I do try to sleep on it for a few days if it a marketplace find. Or wait til the end of the order period for new dolls. So it’s not too much of an impulse.

However! In 2021 I was buying and selling dolls like crazy! My house was a revolving door of dolls. I think we all go through a period of finding out our taste. To be honest, I’ve forgotten how many dolls I’ve had and sold :sweat It might outnumber the amount of dolls I currently have in my collection.

    9. I don’t regret this,,, (yet, and I hope it stays that way) however my wallet is definitely hurting & I’ll need to be really strategic about the rest of the semester :shudder Luckily I plan to do my own faceups so that saves me a little money

    10. I want a labubu sooooo bad but I’m hoping they fall even more out of popularity, I’m willing to spend like $25 on one not $60-100 LOL I’ve been watching them at conventions for about a year without giving in so I think I’m safe on this one.

Blind box dolls are SO tempting, I joined a discord about them so its extra exciting seeing all the new releases, luckily I have really specific taste ( basically ONLY mature girls ) and many blind box dolls are chibi so I’m not as ruined as I could be lol :thumbup

    11. Yessss sleeping on it is my method too, though idk what happened here, I have been telling myself for weeks Yuzhi can be my reward ONLY if I get decent grades and then 1 week into school I completely lost it :sweat

I’m glad fo hear it’s normal though! & that procuring and reselling ones that dont work out is possible as well, though I have a good feeling I will connect with Yuzhi since I’ve been eyeing her so long and she ticks all my boxes. I think 2021 was definitely a year of just being a bit wild in our hobbies to buffer what was going on in the real world for sure

    12. I'm crying so hard on how expensive faceup artist is now

What do you mean it costs 300 USD for a faceup....

    13. Whaaaaaat? No one is worth $300 for just a face up. That’s wild!

    14. I feel this so hard. I stopped buying in 2020 and just sat with my collection for a bit. I had primarily minifee, latidoll, and dollfie dreams. But I had zero motivation to do anything with them, and I finally realized that my tastes had changed.

In the past year, I have completely replaced my resin collection. Came back into the hobby and bought 10 QQDoll heads and 4 Lati Yellow. Zero regrets, only the pain of having to wait for bodies for the QQDolls- they're being put together slowly but surely.

I also realized I like buying dolls with faceups already done? I used to love commissioning and I'm still super fond of the faceup artists I've worked with, but it's so much easier for me to bond with a doll if I know what it'll look like in the end.

    15. I have ADHD. 95% of my collection was impulse buys. The other 5% are Alans I intended to get instead of just finding them for sale and snatching them up :sweat

    16. oh my goodness,,,, $300 is quite steep, I’m sure its going to turn out sooooo beautifully!!

    17. my tastes shift over time for sure but I also get a bit sentimental about objects so I dont know if I would ever be able to part with a doll I had for a long time. (saying this as someone who has not had a doll for a long time so idrk LOL)

Thats so exciting!!!! I hope to be able to see them on their bodies when theyre ready!

I can see how it would be easier to connect with a complete doll than a sum of parts that need to come together. I keep seeing premade up heads by artists on my insta explore and if I let myself linger too long I’d definitely grow attached. :o:love

    18. LOL ! I am extremely not impulsive of a person but generally when I do impulse buy it ends up being like my favourite of whatever thing it is for a longgggg time so maybe I need to follow your lead a bit

    19. Absolutely. I have bought way too many in the last month. It is hard to hold back when there are so many pretty ones out at once…lol

    20. Yes and yes! I myself have been keeping eye of this hobby since I was just fifteen years old, and now fifteen years later I’ve finally landed fulltime job and purchased my first bjds. After so much waiting and patience I now have kinda hard time to control myself from impulse buying (>д<)

    21. I feel you! It's why I have to keep reminding myself "you are trying to save up money. DO NOT buy the first doll you see!"

    22. Soooo many impulse buys over the years relating to dolls. :sweat
I have such a clear idea of what I do and don't like with them now. My current boy's faceup was totally an impulse purchase too but I adore him.

I hope your doll brings you so much joy! Think of it this way, dolls take a while to produce so maybe you'll get him by the end of the semester. He's something to look forward to!

    23. I knowwwwww its really so tempting, I'm also going down a blind box rabbit hole rn and its such a slippery slope

It seems like we're in very similar boats!!! Though I do not have a full time job, & I think if my assets were more liquid I would be in even more danger of overspending lol, its like the anticipation built up for so long and you can't stop the overflow once the floodgates break :chomp:

me too I have a note in my phone where I write all the dolls I'm interested in and if the interest stands the test of time only then I'll genuinely consider buying (works for me... most of the time)

Ah this is such a lovely way to think about it and alieviate some of my guilt lol,,, thank you for saying so!! I hope it will line up to that timeline so it still feels like a reward :thumbup

    24. I'm gonna be the one to come in and say: good. And be a bit of an enabler. I'm full on YOLO these days.

As long as you're impulse buying within your budget and not literally doing it when it's the difference between food/rent and a doll. Go for it.

I promised myself to get a doll when I graduated college, (it was the difference of like 6 months). By the time it happened the company had folded and so... I never was able to buy it, or even find it. *cries over the Lee-el Tinman she never got* So after that as long as I can afford it, I get the doll when I want it. <3 Not to say I buy every doll, because I do think it over quite a bit; I'm low on space and energy these days (BJD as a hobby is a lot of energy I find), I let myself be ok getting an 'impulse'. Especially as I've found that a lot of my impulse buys are some of my favorite dolls.

    25. Ah this makes me feel better! I agree, I just really love having something to look forwards to. It does so much for my mental to be excited about a package on the way especially since shes going to take like 6 months to get here lol. I originally wanted the waiting to buy her to be the wait that satiated me but since I still have to wait its sort of the same lol. I'm so sorry to hear you missed out on your doll, I hope you can find it second-hand exactly as you had wanted it one day

    26. Absolutely! I've been keeping up with BJD since I'd first discovered it in my young teens. Honestly, the moment I realised I finally had enough money to get one it seemed like the gates had opened. I have to wrestle my hand away from the 'buy' button. After getting back into browsing websites (so bad for practicing impulse control...). I'd ended up ordering my first doll, finally after so many years.

Then, not long after that I ended up buying one of my dream dolls, back to back. There was a slight guilt, and sometimes I look back and wonder if I made the right decisions. Ultimately, the answer I always end up with is, yes.

    27. Ah it seems like were in a really similar situation! I’ve been admiring from afar kind of had accepted it was way too far from within budget to really allow myself to Want One, but once I found a body I adored that wasnt going to put me out of house and home it was nearly impossible to wait any longer :kitty2

    28. New Honestly, I tend to overthink my purchases LOLOL. Every time I'm close to an impulse buy, I tend to talk myself out of it, even though I only have the impulse due to having the means  I've talked myself out of some good secondhand deals that way. Maybe I need to loosen up a bit
