Lost & Gone Forever!

Apr 6, 2024

    1. I've been away from the bjd hobby for 5yrs & sadly lost all my dolls during umpteen relocations. So now I'M BAAACK having just ordered the cheapest doll on my 'maybe one day' list, Angel of Dream Shang Nai, along with BonBon Galaxy's 'Philly' bunny pet (off topic but so adorable!)

Shocked at how many doll companies have vanished from Alices Collections website while I've been away though - bang goes my wishlist, not that I have money to burn any more anyway. Sad to see so many of the old names gone forever and thoroughly kicking myself for letting all my dolls go for next to nothing on ebay - but such is life when you're an impulse buyer (and seller!)

Apart from price and the fact that Angel of Dream are lovely quality dolls for the money, the main reason I plumped for one of their dolls as 1st in my new collection, is because I'm dreading them vanishing next. They've been around for so long and are fantastic value, and yet strangely unpopular - I see they've already retired that excellent 62cm boy body I had in 2014 so yes - big sigh.

    2. Welcome back to the hobby :)
maybe they are not so popular as Fairyland or Volks, but I think AoD is a known and loved budget company, especially among those of us who love old-school style. But you are right, there are some dolly makers many of us thought would be around forever, that didn't make it. I hope you will love your pretty Shang Nai :kitty2 (AOD Sinuo has been glued to my mental wishlist for some time :chibi)
I'm not sure how they are perceived among Chinese hobbyists, but the Chinese bjd hobby has grown a lot. Considering that they are based in China, I hope there is still enough demand to keep them going :whee:
If you are looking to replace some of those dolls that aren't sold anymore, I recommend making some WTB posts in various marketplaces, it's very possible that someone has one and is willing to let go. When you are ready to make another purchase, of course. Why not wait til these dolls get home and see if you still have the itch for them :3nodding:

    3. Ooohhhh, I feel you! It's so odd to see all the companies that left acbjd after being away from the hobby for a bit. I recently got back and decided to order a xaga doll boy but I also really wanna get one of AODs 90cm boys. I think AOD is almost criminally underrated in the hobby sometimes like they have some really cute sculpts. And omg yes BonBon Galaxy has some of the cutest sculpts around! Definitely gonna get one after I finish with my xaga doll boys layaway

    4. Hi Elve! Welcome back! :D

I remember you from the Dollzone 60cm thread. (I can't remember what doll you had though. Sorry.)

Wow! You've been gone 5 years! Boy! Talk about culture shock! A lot of BJD companies have gone. It's so sad.

But, glad to hear you have some sweet dollies on the way. Shang Nai is a beautiful doll. Actually, I love Angel of Dream! I have two of their dolls: a Ruo Feng and a Vampire Shi, and they are absolutely lovely dolls.

I know with so many of the old and established BJD companies folding up, it is very unsettling. But, I hope your dread about AOD going away is unfounded. I would hate it if AOD closed-up shop. Too many old-school resin companies have disappeared. (On the other hand, maybe I should seriously be looking at getting that AOD Qian I've always wanted? :doh)

What other dolls are on your "Wish List"?

    5. Thank you Novalyna! <3 Yes I scoured the DoA marketplace for a few days before buying my new AoD (I must stop calling her Shang Nai or it will stick and I need to think of a better name!) Lots of tempting stuff but I am on a very tight budget now and shouldn't have really bought anything at all but I'm only human - and it'll be my birthday soon, so that's my excuse :whee:

Thank you TianShi <3 Yes I had a 90cm boy years ago but on their old style body - the new one is super muscular! What I love about AoD is so far (you never know - things can change as staff leave etc) so far they've been beautifully finished and strung and stand like a rock and are very poseable - for the money the body is brilliant IMO

Thank you Rabbit-moon :fangirl: I remember you too - or rather I remember your avatar - nobody should ever be allowed to change their avatar :whee: And yes, do get a Qian, it's a lovely sculpt and was my first BJD back in 2012 - pics on my flickr with company faceup - I don't think the stock photos do justice to him/her at all!

    6. I was really surprised too - coming back to the hobby after years away I looked at the dealers list here and pretty much everyone in Europe was gone.

    7. I can't believe you've been away 5 years @elve ! You're definitely a familiar face to me. Apparently time flies :shudder I hope you enjoy your fresh start for everything it can be :aheartbea I'm sure Shang Nai will be awesome, and the bonbon galaxy and anyone else you collect.

    11. Hello! I wasn't here when you were, but welcome back!

Oh, no! My hybrid ace-in-the-hole! :...(
I would cry bitter tears if AoD went out of business. Gorgeous, affordable dolls and super-fast shipping (my Qi took less than 2 weeks from order to delivery to my house - WITH face-up).

    13. Thank you! :fangirl: Here's hoping I'm worrying about nothing - it has been known LOL - Wow that is fast delivery!

Thank you Dennis - I had one of your little deer people years ago too - lovely doll <3

    14. Right? I've pre-ordered playline dolls that took longer to ship.
AoD is about as close to instant gratification as you can get in this hobby.

    15. Welcome back!
Agh you're right the older boy body is gone:atremblinI was twiddling my thumbs too long. I will message Alice's to see if it might still be possible to order one. The new one wins out on on thigh joints, but the sculpting style of the older one is just more appealing.
I don't think any other dealer still carries them? Which is a big shame. Their website seems to be down too.
I hope they're still trucking on.

I just redressed Sybil, my AoD Wu Shuang today :3
I'm so glad I got her, she's definitely one of my favourite dolls. So sassy!
Hoping to eventually get Yuki to match with her.
