Photography Looking to improve all the time - critique welcome

Oct 6, 2014

    1. Hi all

I took a few shots of my Littlefee today but am always looking for critiques on my photos in order to improve. I kept to a 60mm prime lens with an f/1.4 aperture. All were done indoors without flash so the pics tended to be a bit warm and I have made a couple cooler. In the last photo, I erased some background "noise" like a side shelf.

Aside from that, I haven't done any more editing.

      Your opinions are welcome!

    2. What a cutie!!! :D Looking at the first photo the overexposure on the top corner gives a very good effect, it looks so soft and dreamy! I really like how you played with the focus in every photo, It may be personal taste but other than obviously giving depth it also makes it all so more interesting. Loving these!

    3. Thank you so much! I got her to try to play around with the depth of field so was really pleased with the results of the pics. Even her little feet are out of focus in the last pic, I loved that.

I'm going to try a different lens today with shorter focus point to see if I can get some nice close ups but I really appreciate your comments. :)

    4. I notice that you have taken these pictures with a DSLR and that's great!

The soft effect on these photos is really nice.

      - I notice you have been throwing her in the centre of the frame and you should be considerate that it begins to get boring without much variation.
      - Another thing is the poses in most of the photos; they seem to lack life. The poses feel rigid and stiff, but if that was the effect you were looking for then go ahead!
      - I especially like the first one mostly because of the lovely colours that you incorporated. I'm not sure if it was deliberate but teh placing of colours work very well together and gives of a nice harmony of warmth.
      - For the second photo i noticed that the depth of field is very shallow and in a sense it's great! means you are using a good lenses and it also emphasises the subject but i feel as if you should push the aperture a little higher because parts of the face which is the important part is partially blurred.

      And that is all!

    5. I wanted to add to the overexposure comment regarding the first picture.

Overexposure is something you want to be careful with, especially with white details. If you look at left side of the hair in that picture, it's a solid ball of white and even if you shoot with your DSLR in RAW, that data is likely not recoverable. Other than that, the shots are overall exposed well. I'll echo the composition comments stated earlier so definitely try varying the placement of your doll within the frame to create different looks :)
