Sewing Looking for striped fabric

Apr 19, 2022

    1. (Hope this is allowed)

I'm searching for some cotton (or poplin) fabric that has thin/small stripes.
Specifically black or brown stripes on pastel-ish colored fabric.
I've searched everywhere and I can't find any!
So I'm all ears for suggestions on where I might find any (online), or if someone knows any brands.

This Volks outfit is a good example of what I'm after:

    2. Have you tried patchwork fabrics suppliers?

They often have cottons in small patterns (including stripes) in a variety of colourway.

Alternstively, if you're OK with upcycling fabrics, look in second hand clothing outlets for mens cotton shirts - which can often be found in smalls stripes in colours not seen in the fabric shops. I can get a couple of SD dresses and an MSD one from a large or extra large man's shirt.

This dress and jacket, for example was made from a second hand shirt

      Good hunting!

    3. I have, but I can't find any!
It's pretty much just white stripes...

    4. Well poop! I hope someone comes up with solution for you.

      Oh wait!

If you find black and white striped cotton the right scale, you could dye it whichever pastel colour you want and it won't effect the black stripes but will dye the white stripes.

Dylon Machine Dye is effective, easy to use and colourfast.

You could hand dye it too, of course (I default to Machine Dye because I'm never as confident aboout hand dyes being colour-fast).

How much fabric do you need anyway?

    5. The Doll House Dapper has some striped fabric and ship to the US via their Etsy shop (though with the current Etsy strike you might what to wait) ;)
On the ebay side, in the UK we have this- 3mm Candy Stripe fabric, some sellers ship internationally. Sadly when I tried the same wording it doesn't seem to bring up anything on ebay.com so maybe it's called something else in the US?

    6. I found this on Etsy (narrow striped cotton), and this one too (3mm striped cotton) both are in the UK but would probbly ship to Sweden, and both have a black option and are 100% cotton so could be dyed to get the white striped whtever pastel colour you wanted.

EDITED TO ADD: or this one (Red and black) but it isn't pastel, or this one (black and pink in Taiwan)

This one's on eBay (black and red) but in UK again.

This one (turquoise and brown) again UK.... sorry my searching obviously tells it my location, not yours...

    7. Have you checked quilt shops? I’ve got some small striped fabric that was intended for quilts.

    8. Oh, that's the closest one yet! Thanks!
As for dye, I've considered it before, but decided that it'll have to be the last last-resort, you know?

      Yes.
That is why I'm after brand names/makers to narrow the shops/retailers down.

    9. I second this! I've used that trick for making doll socks, since it is pretty easy to find in thin jearsy in black and white, but it's a lot harder to match a colour. As a bonus, since the socks takes so little fabric, this way I can get a lot more different colours without having to purchase a lot of different little bits of fabric.

@Yumeiro I'm sorry I don't have any specific suggestions on where to get the fabric you are looking for.

A workaround I some times use when I'm to lazy to dye properly is to use watered down fabric paint and rince the fabric in. It works best for small ammounts of fabric and preferably pure cotton. It gives a very good control over the colour, something that is especcially nice when working with pale pastels since the difference between barely there and way too much is so small.
Different paints may work differently, but for what it's worth; the ones I use have never stained when properly fixed.
I got mine from Slöjddetaljer, these are the ones: Textil Color - Burk om 50 ml - Slöjd-Detaljer

    10. Thanks @Lillith, that's some solid tips!
