Hello! I've always liked difficult challenges, I always sculpted in 3D, but I've never tried to do something seriously in polymer clay. And that's why I wanted to try to create a doll traditionally for comparison. I just ordered SuperSculpey and for now I designed my character which I called "Dalis". Dalis is an elf woman with short legs and a plus size body. Her "charm" is incorrect body proportions - small head, big ears ... I've never tried to make a whole BJD doll, but I've read various tutorials and DIY. I start working on sculpting as soon as I receive a package with polymer clay. This is an experimental doll, but I hope that this project will be successfully completed. She will be about 25-30 cm tall. Criticism and advice are welcome! Best regards. EDIT: The Dalis project has been suspended at the moment, currently I will work on a smaller version - Little Dalis!
She looks so cool! I'd recommend making the feet a bit wider though just so when it comes to posing and standing on her own she'll be able to support her weight! I can't wait to see when you start sculpting ^-^
Indeed, these feet seem too small - I didn't think before that she may have problems standing and posing. Thank you very much for the valuable tip - I will remember it when I sculpt. Edit: I made a skeleton prototype from tin foil. Edit:
I'd recommend sculpting the ears afterwards instead of having it a part of the tin foil base ^-^ just because it will be difficult to mold with it being hollow in the ears, as well as sculpt.
Thank you, I also started making (trial) joints. EDIT: Attention: I would like to inform everyone that the Dalis project will be suspended at the moment - but I will work on creating her smaller version - Little Dalis! It will look very similar but she will be reduced in size.
Thank you! Little Dalis will, however, have closed eyes and smaller hips. This is her first conceptual sketch, but I will definitely change a few more things while sculpting:
Huh, okay... I just finished sculpting the Little Dalis head prototype, effect? As you can see - medium, not very good. But I will still sanding this head (because the surface is uneven) and modify it - I will probably re-sculpt it. Any tips?
Looking great so far! are you using Sculpey for her? I think you mentioned that, but I'm not sure. If you are, there are a couple of things that are really cool about it: 'prebaking' I've found is really nice when making dolls because once you're happy with where you're at, you can bake it and once it's cooled down you can continue. I'm a bit heavy-handed with my projects so this prevents me from squishing/messing up the progress I've made so far. Once you get used to Sculpey, you may want to change to Super Sculpey which is a bit more durable and I think sands better. Also just using a reference for anatomical sake is always a good idea, even if your character is not purely human. Keep on going, can't wait to see her progress!
Thank you very much for the advice! I will try to do it - I will bake the parts only if I think they are good. And Little Dalis received a new body part...
