I could never find a proper little brother for my future unoa familly.. all the tiny dolls were too young looking.. i needed a 10 or 12 year old looking doll that isnt the same height.. So I've decided to make my own BJD and hopefully cast him in resin at some future date. I am making him double jointed and have the 'sitting' style legs, so he can kneel on the floor. I do, however, want to make an optional bust for people who want a female doll, thus i was going to make him GENDER NEUTER, meaning there would be no boy or girl bits on him. Does this bother people? I noticed the lovelyhouse boy bodies aren't nearly as popular because they dont have boy bits even though the sculpt is AMAZING. Is it only because of the fact he is supposed to be older? I notice people don't mention it for more childlike dolls (1-5 yr old). Anyone have any opinions? (scans of the design pending.. i already packed up my PC to move, and that includes my scanner).
my $0.02 (i'm not even american hehe) personally i would be disapointed to have a neutered boy even if he is only young because it spoils the wholeness of a dolls personality in my eyes
Maybe I'm an oddball, but it wouldn't bother me at all...though I'd probably opt for a boy-doll, optional bust aside. (Though if you were sculpting a doll with the intent to make him/her 10 or 12, wouldn't an optional bust be rather, er, flat for a 10 year old girl? Of course, then again, SD13s are supposed to be 13 years old... ops: ) I think optional parts are cool, as are the sitting legs and double-joints. Would there be a torso-joint or waist-joint, or just a solid body? That would be really awesome too, since the smaller dolls tend to have solid torsos...those new i-elf dolls being the exception, of course.
It depends on where you want to go with this doll. Donn has sculpted a 'briefs' crotch for his doll for clothes, as the genitals showed through pahts entirely too much. If you want to go that route, that's briefs crotch piece, male genitals crotch piece, and labia crotch piece, for 'angel', male, & female. Flat chest & tiny breasts option, too--just make the joints the same. I think the exchanging would go easier with at least one joint in the torso, but all the pieces have to match up at the joints--hip, waist, shoulders, head. Possible. Not neccesarily easy, but you knew that already. But if your doll, for you, doesn't need any indication of sex, that's fine, too. Ann in CT
i personally like my dolls to have some sort of gender.. but its a two joint torso (low waist, ala CP and Lovelyhouse) and it would be so much easier to sculpt the optional top and not a top and bottom. raawwwrr! now if only i could get my PC to work i could load pics. Damn you surge protector! (the fuses keep going out in the house and my surge protector was a casualty of war)
I would actually prefer a genderless doll! Not that my doll is naked that often, but his tiny little package is hardly functional anyway... so it doesn't matter! And a gender-neutral 10-12 year old can be either a girl or a boy with no fancy modifications (although I'm sure some people might want a large busted 10 year old girl... er... ^^
So, in your eyes, neither of my dolls have a decent personalty just because they are genderless? Does the lack of a finely detailed wang really detract that much from a doll? Personally, I think that was a highly offensive statement to those of us who actually own and love genderless dolls. Dechanique - I'm sure you can tell from what I said above that I prefer genderless dolls. ^^; Plus, as you mentioned, it would be easier to make. Honestly, people will buy dolls -- genderless or not -- if they have a nice face and body! Otherwise there wouldn't be as many owners of tiny dolls (most of which are genderless), hm? No matter your choice, I look forward to seeing what you make!
oh I'm sorry! please don't be offended I really didn't mean any offense at all! I only meant for me, I only meant I would not want to own a genderless doll I wasn't trying to insult your dolls or anyones doll tastes! It's only my personal difference and I realise that I am the unusual one who thinks willys are cute and is a bit afraid of girliness...I know I'm wierd so please don't think I'm trying to insult anyone! and please don't be offended cos it's only my wierdness i'm talking about! sorry >_<
Personally it would bug me, I think, because it would make him slightly incomplete in my eyes, next to the others, and it would bug me like anything. That's not to say that I don't respect other people's genderless dolls, but, personally, I wouldn't buy one (I've toyed with the idea several times before). I can't wait to see the results, whether you go one way or the other, though!
As a third option.. if you're going to be making an optional bust, could you do an optional hip-part? One smooth female/genderless, one with little boy bits? I personally love my doll's little bits, as I think they're part of what make them so special. They're cute.. like their little fingernails. I wouldn't love them any less if they didn't have sculpted fingernails, but I like that they do. It's not really a sexual thing at all. To me, a genderless doll would be like one without fingernail detailing, no less of a doll than any other, but with one less detail to find cute.
I always was irritated with ken's plastic mound... and have used milliputti to make him "parts" on some of my favorite dolls... so I guess I wouldn't like genderless. X3 But I think if the face sculpt was really good and the body was well sculpted other than that it wouldn't bother me at all.
