Little Boy with a big head - Critique requested from any and all

Jan 30, 2012

    1. Ahhh its so good to get my hands dirty again!!! LOL This is my first venture into sculpting in LaDoll clay and in such a large size... There was no plan/picture with this fella - his creation was more so I could get an idea of how LaDoll behaves as a medium compared to my usual Apoxy Sculpt. I have to say its just lovely to work with... very light and airy and responds well - I do love Apoxy Sculpt though as its a little more robust and from the last few hours of working with LaDoll I'm thinking I may not enjoy its sanding properties... Comparing time-wise - this head over a styrene core took a little over two hours to reach this stage - I couldn't have done that with Apoxy as I cannot shape the back of the head and front simultaneously without causing major dints or sagging - however the LaDoll held its shape and I could rest it on paper towel without fearing it would adhere... thumbs up for LaDoll

Here he is... feel free to print him out and draw all over him, go to town with red texta if you see fit.... I can see some glaring symmetry issues already but I don't want to leave him unfinished and would thoroughly enjoy some close-up and thorough critique about his facial proportions and any other opinions you have regarding his style etc. so I can round out what I actually plan to do with him :)

    2. The eyelid-less eyes are really neat, and I like the lips, but his cheeks are kind of strange. They're a little bit too far back, and possibly too high. Children's cheeks are big like that, but they're lower and closer to the front of the face. You can really tell in the profile--you should be able to see the top curve of his cheek from that angle.

    3. Stoopid double post....

    4. As a baby sculptor myself I would add some cheek to him as you look at him form the SIDE not the front.
As I tell my students, this is a 3D item so you must look at it from all angles. Addiing some cheek (basically next to the nose is what I am saying) will give him a more child-like quality :)
      HTH!!!
