LIP GLOSS Glossing your dolls lips

Oct 1, 2004

    1. the only stuff i could find, is called winsor & newton conserv-art gloss varnish? is that ok?

    2. a couple of coats of ANY acrylic gloss (high-gloss), just don't use medium gloss. Clear, acrylic gloss of any kind is fine.

    3. I've used clear nail polish. the only problem I've had is that it's kinda thick, but I haven't had any problems getting it off... though, I use acetone to remove faceups so that's probably why.

    4. A hobby store near my home has something called "Gloss Lacquer" in the modelling section... I forget the brand though. Would anyone know lacquer is safe/effective for doll lips?

    5. I was too lazy to read through all 19 pages of posts so quick question. I was at the art store today and I noticed all the Acryllic Glosses i found said mix with acrylic paint. Can i just use the gloss as is or do i have to mix?

    6. I have a question...I have Tamiya gloss and use Testors. But when I try to gloss my girls lip the gloss goes right through the testors and smears the pastels underneath. I use maybe 2-3 coats of Testors before applying the gloss. Is there any tips out there for fixing this? (other than getting a different type of gloss or sealant, lol). Thanks!

Oh, and when I used the same items on her manicure it did fine. :?

    7. You don't have to mix, you can just paint it on by itself. With faceups I think it's best to seal the faceup between color and gloss--if you really glop gloss straight onto paint it may make the color run. Though I've done light gloss right on the paint (on a painting, not a doll) and it was fine.

    8. cariface - thanks :sweat. i actually forgot you could search within a thread :doh. i'm use to searching for threads but not within them so i forgot. But I also don't know how i would have worded this to find this answer.

wildwoodflower - thanks :). i actually wasn't going to use it on a doll that's why i was curious.

    9. I've had mixed results with clear nail polish - I'd been using a certain brand for ages, but I lost the bottle, so I decided to borrow my mom's cheaper stuff. It wound up smearing the paint through the sealant. x.x; So be careful with what you use, test it elsewhere first.

As for lacquer based paints, they're a bit harder to get off, but Windsors and Newton brush cleaner can do it. Just make sure to apply them over a layer or two of sealant.

    10. what is the name of the gloss? and where can i buy it?;)

    11. You can use pretty much any acrylic gloss, and you can get it at any craft or art store. Just use a fine, fine brush and apply it evenly where you want it. Gloss is usually pretty thick and will even out most brushstrokes. Wait until it fully dries, and if you want it glossier, you can put a second coat on. Make sure to clean your brush out right away, as the gloss will ruin it if left in. (I ruined one of my finest brushes this way. :sweat )

I use DecoArt brand DuraClear Varnish, Gloss/Brilliant. I like just one coat on my boys' lips to keep them from looking too girly.

    12. I have Golden Soft Gel (Gloss)... would this work?

    13. I've seen and heard Liquitex's Gloss Medium & Varnish works well. I haven't used it myself yet :(

    14. I have watercolour varnish, could I use it as gloss?
      It also says matt varnish.

      thanks.

    15. Matt means flat. As in not shiny.
Even if you can use the varnish, it will not be glossy.

    16. I did a search in the thread but not many results came up...

Is Mr.Color good? I'm looking for a medium to high gloss. I used Tamiya before and it worked well but I didn't see any at the Sofmap near me today so I picked up the #46 clear gloss in Mr.Color.

    17. I have Aqueous Hobby Color - gloss (it was recommended by the seller at the shop when he saw that I can't decide which one I want ). It is great - if I use it undiluted it's so glossy that I only need to apply one layer for a high gloss effect. With a bit of water it has a bit more tamed and satiny feel that works great for male faceups^^

I just have to leave the MSC to dry reeeeeallly thoroughly otherwise it takes off the lip color :sweat

    18. I use DecoArt glaze. Well the name on the bottle says DecoArt triple thick brilliant brush-on gloss glaze. Diamond, non yellowing clear finish . What a mouthfil lol

    19. I just bought some of the Warhammer Citadel Gloss. I've heard it's great but I will post my results with it once I've used it.

    20. I used to use clear nail varnish, but I found the brush that comes with them is crap for fluid movement, and the nail varnish is thick and gloopy.
I now use Windsor & Newton gloss and a really fine brush. It's perfect for controling the level of shine on certain parts of the doll's face.
      I highly reccomend.

    21. As soon as I get a good sealant, I'll be using Liquitex gloss medium & varnish. Basically acrylic. (Then again I'm a n00b.... >.>)

    22. I think when I get started, I might be a Winsor & Newton purist! Maybe a little Tamiya thrown in, but I have easy access to good stuff around here...

    23. I made a checklist and got all the things I need to attempt my first faceup, but a little fine print text at the bottom of the glaze I got (for the lips and stuff) made me want to double check to make sure I got the correct stuff.

Is this stuff okay to use as glaze for the lips/etc? x:
      I know liquitex was a good brand to use, but I'm having second thoughts if I got the "right" glaze >__<;

    24. Instead of a glaze, look for a varnish instead. Liquitex makes a great one, but I prefer Tamiya X-22 for glossing. I don't believe the glaze medium is meant as a final finish, it's more of medium to add to acrylic paints to make them more translucent.

    25. Like Kate said, I'm not sure that a glaze is the correct product - you want a gloss or a varnish. I use Folk Art gloss (super heap brand you can even get at WalMart) for a more matte look, and Tamiya gloss for a high-gloss look. :)

    26. Crap xnx;

If all I could find was the Gloss Varnish, would that be alright to use? D:
(Didn't buy it, just saw that was all they had and once again had to check because I swore they had the Gloss Medium /and/ Varnish, but they didn't XD;...)

    27. Yes! That would work the same (if not better) than the gloss medium & varnish. But I still recommend the Tamiya gloss :)

    28. Okay, thank you! :)
I'll probably get the Tamiya Gloss next time since I plan on ordering from Volks sometime soon x3
      Thank you again! ^^

    29. I've never actually bought it from Volks, many online (and offline) hobby shops carry it, Tamiya is a popular brand. I order mine from ImageAnime.

    30. What specific formulation is this? Is it a water-based one? What is it for ostensibly, paintings or crafts, wha? & does it brush on (as I assume it does)? VERY interested as W&N is my big main brand ever since college! ;)

Oh yeah, you did say brush, haha! :p

    31. This might be a very silly question, and I have been searching for an answer in tutorials and stuff, I just tried glossing the lips, do I MSC it after or before glossing? And do I wait for the gloss to dry before MSC?

    32. You MSC before glossing. If you sprayed on the MSC afterwards it would dull the gloss turning your glossing into a wasted effort. :)

    33. Thank you! Thought something was odd when the gloss turned kinda milky....

    34. Is it Liquitex GLOSS varnish or GLAZE varnish I need for faceups? D:
      Because I have this big bottle of the gloss varnish which I was told was the correct stuff to use, but it doesn't... really... seem to be that glossy at all? o-o;;;

    35. Gloss. ouo b you could apply several coats to make it really really shiny? But keep in mind that a little bit of shine will be magnified by a camera. :] you could also try the high gloss varnish if you like.

    36. Okay, thank you- I was just making sure xD
I'll try applying another coat, since I've only been using one thin one- and I'll keep an eye out for the high gloss, perhaps >w<

    37. I just bought some and I wanna make sure its okay to use it as gloss for my dollfie. Thanks for your help! :)

    38. Hmmm... If I'm correct, the medium and varnish is a happy marriage, meaning that it can be mixed with paints to make them glossy [medium] and that it can just be applied as a coating [varnish]. It just depends on your preference of use.

Liquitex is the trusted brand though ouo b so I don't think you'll have a problem.

    39. oh thanks! I was really worried I spent hours looking for the right thing and when I got home to check it wasn't the same other people were using, I was worried that it wouldn't come off after I applied it. Thanks

    40. If this is the product you purchased, then you are okay!
It's 100% acrylic, so it will come off with Winsor & Newton brush cleaner and restorer if you want to remove the face-up later. It's water soluble while it's still wet, so you can control the amount of glossiness by thinning it with water. :)

    41. And just to add an actual testimony--this is what I use to gloss lips on my dolls when I paint them. I've had no trouble with it and have been using it for years :3

    42. I've had the Liquitex gloss go sticky after a while, so be on the look out for that.

    43. I just used Folkart Artists' Varnish Gloss It says "Polyurethane - Protective Sealer - Non Yellowing" and on the back it says it is for use on acrylic paints.
      For some reason it also says "Plaid". o__O;
It worked really nicely! I was worried about getting her lips too shiny because her faceup is supposed to be natural, but one coat gave them a nice soft shimmer. :3
And no, it didn't dry plaid.

    44. I re-MSC'd by LUTS Bory with MSC UV cut flat, and want his lips to be nice an shiny but I dont have any MSC gloss or many hobby stores around. Is there any acylic gloss I can get easily and quickly thats effective and wont kill the resin? Thanks!

edit: I found this at a store I could possibly get to but would it work?

    45. Umm, i am wanting to gloss my dolls lips, but i don't want to use clear nail polish, it seems like a bad idea, but i have this bottle of stuff...the label reads: 'polyurethane gloss varnish, solvent free'...it says it can be used on plastic, but it doesnt say anything about it being acrylic etc...i really dont want to hurt my doll >.< Could someone advise me?

*Edit* It doesn't have a brand name either >.<

    46. liquitex (:

    47. I have some varnish here, from a company called Lefranc & Bourgeois, and I'm wondering if I can use that on my doll? It doesn't say exactly what's in it, just says that it's 'water varnish for gouache'..whatever gouache is....I've used it with things I've painted (not dolls though) with paint from the same company, they call it poster paint... I'm not really a big paint conaisseur, anyone a little wiser got some input? :)

    48. Skimmed through but I was wondering -

Right now I'm using the Liquitex Gloss Medium & Varnish - it's nice but takes a couple coats for me to get a high shine. I'd really love to try some Aqueous Hobby Color Clear Gloss (which I think is the same as Mr.Color Gloss?) but I am unable to find it in my area.

Does anyone have some suggestions for HIGH SHINE gloss? Or, does anyone know where to get Mr.Color in the NE Ohio area?

Does Testors make a gloss of any sort?

    49. Testors does make a clear acrylic gloss, but I've never used it so I don't know about the results. I believe it's a part of their Model Masters line. They have it at some hobby shops here, but there's a hobby shop near me that also sells Tamiya colors, which are quite nice.

I use Tamiya X-22 gloss and I really love the results. Just one coat has a very lovely shine.

    50. Plaid is the company, folkart is the range. ;)
I use their matte varnish for coating my hooves and so I can vouch for their stuff too. Very resilient.

    51. I use clear nail polish on lips and inner eye lids, too
      it works very well >_<

    52. Yeah but nail polish is made almost entirely up of things that are solvents to plastics. So it's a terrible idea. You can buy a $2-3 bottle of acrylic varnish at any art store, it will work just as well and it's safe on resin.

    53. i used tamiya clear gloss.. just gloss it 2 layers and its nice and glossy~

    54. *edit: Tested it on the neckpiece - it's not very shiny at all and takes FOREVER to dry. You have to wait 4 hours before applying a second coat. Wouldn't recommend.

Found something that.... might work? It's Model Master Acryl Gloss Clear Acryl

Anyone have any idea? It's made by Testors but does water clean up mean it comes off in water?

At my store they sell individually without the brochure so that didn't really help.

    55. Yup! I use that too! It gives a really nice effect! I dont mind potting 3 coats. The result is pleasing!!

    56. I use Citadel paints and they have a gloss I can't remember what's its called exactly but its a milky clear and it's the only one they have. You don't have to build it up, it's just as safe as other latex paints, and it comes off just as easy. It works really really well but it is a goopy texture. You can't water it down to use it or it won't shine so make sure you dedicate a brush to it for best results. It takes a little getting used to but only costs a few dollars for the entire pot.

    57. Is sculpey gloss glaze okay to use? I'm having problems finding cheaper or smaller bottles of gloss for BJDs. Liquitex is available at hobby lobby when I search online but it only lists the 16 oz bottles which are $23 O.o... When I get a chance to go back to michael's and or Hobby Lobby I intend to look around but I'm just wondering what other brands are for sure available and in smaller containers since a little goes a long way. I wasn't very successful in searching for acrylic glosses on google with michaels or hobby lobby as keywords... and tamiya brand doesnt seem to be available either. I only have those two hobby stores close to me besides Joann's but it didnt pop up in the search so I dont think they'll have any there.

      EDIT:

Also I intend to check and see if the shop that I found the other day carries the citadel gloss... but I'm wondering about people's experiences with it first before I go ahead and get some. I'm assuming their paints are okay to use as well? Because I intended on picking up some of them also.

    58. hello, I was wondering for the winsor and newton gloss...
I got some a while back cuz I hated the liquitex one (from thickness and very difficult to get even and unstreaky) I wanted a more liquid based gloss.

I got the artists gloss varnish... and then I realized it says oil colour at the top @.@ it took me forever to find this one... an was the only winsor newton gloss they had. So I assumed it was right...
I have even already used it on a doll (nothing bad has happen to him and his lips/eyelids look great still)
But >.>; is this the wrong one? It doesn't have oil in it does it? just for oil colors?
I wish I realized this before I bought and used it >.<; *derped*
Does anyone know if this is bad or there is a different one? where to get it?

    59. I use Liquitex Gloss Varnish. I got a pretty big bottle for a decent price, and it's nice because if I want less shine, I use it lightly and only do a layer or two, if I want tons of shine, I use several thick layers.

    60. Sculpey gloss glaze is made specifically for polymer clay and it is meant to be fired in the oven, so I would not use it on a doll. You should be able to find a small jar of acrylic gloss at Hobby Lobby. Testors makes clear acrylic gloss as well as semi-gloss for eyelids. You will have to go down the model car aisle to find it, it's with the rest of the model paints and sealants. It runs around $4.00.

Here is a link to the exact stuff I'm talking about (it's what I bought at Hobby Lobby):
      http://www.scalehobbyist.com/catago.../product.php?gclid=CKL4ne_Cm7YCFY4-MgodmgQAVQ

oh and don't forget to see if Hobby Lobby has any 40% off coupons online before you go, it can save you some $$ ;)
