Advice please! I bought a bottle of Daler-Rowney soluble varnish, which is for use with acrylic paints. I have been testing it on some vinyl dolls, but it doesn't dry properly and even after a few weeks is still sticky. I painted it straight on top of acrylic paint, after leaving the paint to dry overnight first, so I thought that it would be fine. I don't want to use it on any expensive dolls if it's going to be like this! Can anyone help??? I don't know if I am doing something wrong, or if I should try a different brand.
The best gloss for dolls is Liquitex. I am fairly sure you can get it in the UK. <link to one place that sells it in the UK> Since the gloss you used is still tacky on the vinyl, it probably won't cure right on resin.
I recently discovered that some paints won't dry on vinyl (I was painting a pair of boots) - even after a week it was as sticky as when it was just painted. Someone here looked up that paint and it did say somewhere in the specs that it wouldn't dry on vinyl >_< That doesn't mean it wouldn't dry on other plastics (or resin) though, it was normal hobby enamel paint. For gloss, I'm using "Barniz Varnish Removable acrylic varnish". I chose the satin version because I have a male doll and I don't think boys should use lipgloss... (and certainly not that character *LOL*) This is shiny enough to catch the light without being overly glossy.
OK, I found Liquitex gloss in my local art shop, yay. Also spent £20 on pastels and pencils etc, so I'm rapidly becoming very poor . But at least I'm all set to go ahead with my first face-up on resin! I'll try building up the gloss layers one at a time until I'm happy with the look.
Well you are off to a good start! I hope your pastels are the chalk kind and not oil based. I've been looking for liquitex gloss in my small town... All I can find is the matte... Thank goodness for the internet!
My sister used clear nailpolish on her dolls lips to gloss, and it pulled the color right off! and desolved the testors dull coat. She had to completely remove the faceup because of it... I was gonna go look at the art store, and try to find some kind of gloss to use. I'll post a pic of results if they're good ^.^ (shops at micheals)
I just bought this the other day not really thinking much of the enamel name, since a lot of places call normal acrylic gloss enamel. But upon opening the jar it smells like...well. Enamel xD. So the question is, is it safe to use? I would assume so since it's the only gloss on soom but then again you never know x_x. So yeah. Help me out here? I want to know because I bought it already and I don't really want to just chuck it and go out and buy new gloss without knowing if this is any good first.
It's what they sell in the Volks stores, too. I haven't noticed any ill effects since I started using it, a little over a year ago. It doesn't seem to stick very well on vinyl, but that's about the only problem I have with it.
I have very sensitive skin and actually spilled it all over my hand... and no reaction. In addition to not irritating my moody skin, I have found that it works a lot better than liquitex gloss. As far as inhaling it, I am sure that anything with a distinctly chemical scent is not good to breath in. I would recommend that you just use it for those tiny bits on your resin and refrain from breathing it in as much as possible.
Thank you everyone :3 I'm just very weary of using enamel because I've been told it's not good to use xD. If it's been used before then I suppose I shouldn't be worried xD.
Can you buy gloss for lips at Hobby Lobby? It is the closest craft store. I bought testors from the model section, but had no idea what type of gloss to get or what section it would be under. Can someone list what glosses work best? (or if this already exists you can just point me in that direction!) Thanks & sorry if this answer already exist!
i have heard that you can get triplethick gloss at hobby lobby, and that works just fine for these types of dolls. almost any (liquid, non-spray) gloss that is meant to coat acrylic paints should work for you.
So I should check out the acrylics section and look for triplethick gloss or similiar? Thanks so much! I think I will go back next week, since I forgot pink & white watercolor pencils for lip liines, lol.
Nail polish!!! Sorry guys, but I love it!!!^^ Really, glossy and have had no problems with yellowing. I also put them on the nails to, though I still coat them.
that's good if it works for you, but i would advise against it. nail polish is too harsh and could eat away at resin over time.
Also, can you please post threads talking about it eating a way resin??? I really don't want that happening to me!!! So that would be great
http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22408 that was my experience.. when i first started in this little doll hobby ^^

Liquitex makes acrylic called Glossies which works well for high shine on lips. There are several nice colors for lips which you can alter by mixing also of courrse. I also use the Liquitex High Gloss on top of it as well. I have used clear nail polish but it didn't shine as much as I was looking for.
I have at home this: 'Glossy acrylic varnish' water based' Do you think is good for resin and do the lips of my dolls?
Arg, my head hurts from looking at pages and pages of glosses Can someone point out an EXACT product here that should work well and not damage the doll...? http://www.dickblick.com/vendors/liquitex/
Okay, thank you very much! I was a little exasperated, there's so much to choose from and I've never done this kind of thing before. ^^;
Hi! I have the Glimmerlack (made by Deco Art). It is an acrylic medium with glittering bits inside. Is it safe to use it on my doll?
I have some type of high gloss by model master D: it said it's acrylic based, is that ok? I just usually touch up the shininess of the lips and eyes if they fade.~
I used a gloss by folk art in the past and hated it. I found that over time it would kinda wear off around the edges of the doll's lips and look funny. I switched to Liquitex last year and haven't seen any problems.
Do places like hobby lobby or Walmart/target carry Liquitex? They are the main shopping stores Ihave available to me. I tried looking at Hobby Lobby by their acrylic pants, but they only had like 2 options (both looked really thin?) and were larger containers than I would want to buy, lol. Am I just looking in the wrong section?
Hobby Lobby--most likely. At least, the one near me had a decent selection. Walmart/Target--Highly doubt it, unless it's a HUGE store.
nope not really. So what section in hobby lobby? With the acrylics or somewhere else? In the acrylics section I only saw 2 choices. Thanks, btw, for the quick reply!
BTW WARNING I glossed by boy's fingernails with clear nail varnish (the regular variet) and ti cause yellowing on his nails DDDD: Clear nail varnish=definitely no no, causes yellowing.
newbie here! I've just read that arcylic paint is ok right. is it something like this? http://www.xl-shop.com/xlshop/pages/productDetails.asp?productId=MRH-4698 and silly question... (i know I should search this in brushes thread, but just wanna ask for lip) what kind of brush did you use for the lips? thanks!!
i am very confused can i use gel for decoupage? it is water-paint and not yellowing or can i use wax picture-varnish? it contain : ketonic resin (45%) Bees wax bleached white spirit
Does anyone know if Sally Hansens Hard as Nails Clear nail polish is acrylic based? I read the ingredients, but the words don't mean anything to me. xD Ethyl Acetate, Butyl Acetate, SD Alcohol 40-B, Nitrocellulose, Acrylates Copolymer, Isopropyl Alcohol, Adipic Acid/Neopentyl Glycol/Trimellitic Anhydride Copolymer, Trimethyl Pentanyl Diisobutyrate, Triphenyl Phosphate, Etocrylene, Dimethicone, Saccharomyces/Iron Ferment, Butylene Glycol, Calcium Pantothenate, Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract, Water, Propylene Glycol, Violet 2. It does say Acrylates...
i have a question! so ive been all over my town searching for a gloss to put on the lips, NOTHIN! only this weird varnish stuff that when i apply takes off the paint, whoa that cant be good! so while on my search this weekend i asked the lady at the local hobby store if she could get any in or what does she have in the way of gloss? she said modpodge.. the shiny kind not the mat. u know the glue stuff for like paper mache and such? well she said thats the only thing she can think of.. so will this harm my babys?
Twigling is right, I've used many brands but Tamiya Color X-22 clear gloss is the best with high shine. Smells like grapes to me but I'm sure I've lost a few brain cells doing that! HA! I would never use nail enamel. Wouldn't do it!
I would avoid modgepodge because it can infact turn tacky on dolls. I don't think it would harm them but we use them on custom ponies and several of them for some reason became tacky... or.. attracted dirt at a faster rate. I would look at gaming stores where they sell paints for minitures. Vallejo has a great gloss, liquatex makes a good one too.
yea thats what i thought i mean i use this stuff for glue i wasnt sure about it being a gloss! i would look in another store but im out in the boonies.. so i only had 2 choices.. and only one had an idea for me. everything else was this deco art duraclear varnish stuff that ive tried.. it took the paint off >_< says its a polyurethane finish.. i duno i think ill look again and hope ill find something
I have used modpodge for decoupage and it seriously turns into a mess. It's good for gluing but it needs to be sealed in order to keep it from attracting dirt. I would definitely NOT use this to gloss anything on your doll.
If either of the two stores you went to has an acrylic paints section look there for gloss. Also, you can order some off the internet from Volks USA. That's what I bought, but haven't tried it yet. If I get time to try it this weekend I'll post here.
yea the only gloss acrylic i could find had great big sparkles in it >.< lol it was kinda tacky i didnt want it on the lips. SO im ordering online. ill be reading this thread for suggestions. thanks again guys for the helps
I use Tamiya gloss. I bought it from an ebay vendor (maybe coolcat or mimiwoo. I can't remember). And when I want the lips to be shimmery or add a little extra color, I add a tiny (and I mean tiny) amount of pearlex powder. Volks also carries some really nice glosses and shimmer powders that I have tried and really like, but for some reason, I keep gravitating back to my Tamiya and Pearlex. I'm not sure why. I think the Volks stuff if better, but I keep using the Tamiya and Pearlex. An odd quirk, I know, but I do it and I love the effect I get with the combination.
Well im a little lazy and dont want to read through all the pages atm so dont bother if someone already suggested this. I dont know how well it would gloss but try mixing glue(like elmers) with water and using it as a sealent. It also should come off pretty easily but might not last as long.
That's what I tried using... and it really sucks. I don't recommend at all. I'm going to pick up some Liquitex next.
I just bought Grumbacher varnish, I haven't put it on my doll but I was wondering if anyone knew for certain whether it is safe for resin or not? One of the chemicals is ethoxyl acetate (This one has me a bit cautious)
I used clear nail polish on my first's lips, it's worn off over five or six years though, but he needs a redo anyway. It looked beautiful before, I just hope I can get it right again.
I'll be using Winsor & Newton Acrylic Gloss Varnish. Going to use the same gloss for all the glossy features (lips, eyebrows, eyelids, etc.) Has anyone had better results by using different glosses for different places/features?
I use Liquitex High Gloss Varnish. Cloudywolfz - I find one thin coat of the Liquitex stuff is good for eyes, but for lips, two or three is better. Just make sure they're thin coats, otherwise it clumps up in the corners and gets lumpy. Also make sure it dries thoroughly between coats, otherwise it will strip the paint off.
