Wigs Lightening a wig?

Sep 20, 2022

    1. So let me set the scene, you've been trying to envisage a character in doll form, trying and failing to find the right accessorising, but then oh! You find the perfect wig! And for a colour as simple as white, you assume it's a done deal, buy it, and wait for it to arrive.
It arrives and... Well, it isn't white white, it has a yellow tinge to it that maybe wasn't so clear in the advert images, but ofc due to screen brightness/colour differences, it is hardly a fair reason to ask to return it.

My question being, can I in any way attempt to lighten this wig? I'm assuming it's synthetic, as the listing I bought it from says high temperature fibre (so maybe no hair bleach XD), would something like a purple shampoo do anything?

For reference, first image this is the wig I bought (it does look to have a bit more yellow in it than just being "white"), second is the colour it more resembles.
I know I'm unlikely to get it to a perfect white, but anything to de-yellow it would be a godsend

    2. So, if you can deposit a purple tint on it then yes, it will cancel out yellow tones. But it will not be lighter, worst case it may end up darker but more neutral or even completely purple. So if you want to use toner bear in mind the ideal result is probably going to be a platinum blonde or nearly silver color.
If you really want white white, my advice would be to try to find a different wig, since the center part wave style is not exactly uncommon to find.
I've colored a few wigs in my day but im really not an expert on it. The results can be extremely hard to predict based on fiber etc. So I prefer not to give specific advice. I really hope you can figure out the best solution though

    3. I think you'd have to use household bleach like Clorox to lighten a synthetic wig.
edit: I just googled "bleaching synthetic hair" and came up with several tutorials. So it is possible.

    4. I don't think you can change it to be perfectly honest. It's synthetic and the color is innate to it, ie they have mixed pigment into the plastic for lack of a better way to describe it. I would find a white wig rather than ruin the wig. :( Purple shampoo will definitely not work on it, it's not a natural fiber like human hair.

On the up side, if you decide you wanted a fun color, you can definitely dye it with Rit synthetic dye or by using alcohol inks with rubbing alcohol.

    5. Purple shampoo for natural hair won’t do anything but a very light dip in purple synthetic dye could work? If it’s high temperature it should hold up in hot water

    6. Alas, you can't bleach synthetic fiber, generally. It is threads of colored plastic, I'm afraid, not fiber with a dye in/on it.

    7. Well! I attempted a purple shampoo wash, and ngl it made an amazing difference! I'll have to try and grab my photos from instagram, but it is now a silvery colour which - although not what I was after - is honestly so much nicer than the awful yellow it was before XD
Alas is still isn't perfect for the character I was aiming for, so I think I am going to have to grin and bare buying a new wig (tho my two alternatives have since sold out :') )
