Legs snap into weird positions, elastic problem maybe?

Jul 3, 2023

    1. After stringing up my bjd the legs tend to snap into weird positions. Like behind the back or twisted. I'm not sure if its a model problem as I'm 3d printing mine but I thought maybe it might be that I'm stringing them too tightly? Any feedback on ways I can fix this, whether to string tighter or looser or maybe I need to contact model owner to fix if there is a design issue?

    2. Are your dolls printed in resin or PLA? If PLA, then the material is probably very light so the elastic can't be too tight without causing it to move out of place from the tension. If resin, then the joints may not have anything to "hold" onto. I would recommend adding something for friction between the joints. A thin layer of dried hot glue between where two pieces touch in the joint might do the trick. Or a silicone disk. Something to give the pieces a surface to grab onto to remain in place.

    3. Design can also cause this. If the stringing channels are too wide or too narrow in certain places they will cause tensions in undesired directions. Part of why making a doll is hard is visualizing where that elastic is pulling and where it is inhibited, and how that pulls.

    4. Im printing in PLA, can I add something to the joints for PLA as well? I will try less tension as well in the elastic.

    5. I think you should try the silicone disks first. I might be a little concerned with adding hot glue to the PLA, so if you can test it on an inconspicuous area that won't affect the doll overall, you can try that and see if it warps, melts, or damages the PLA before applying it to any sockets. Otherwise, another way to suede is to apply like moleskin or traditional sueding to the sockets. Personally, I think the silicone disks should work well, or the hot glue if it agrees with the PLA!

    6. Hello @sherrick -

Only On Topic dolls can be discussed, bought/sold here or listed in your profile.
The Criteria for Doll inclusion is here. Please note that dolls must be cast in resin (not printed) to be considered for topicality.

Any discussion regarding Off Topic dolls goes in our off topic area, Brigadoon.

    7. Interesting to hear about the stringing channel size, I wonder if that explains why some brands have lower legs that twist no matter what.
