So I heard that buying dolls from taobao is much cheaper than buying from their English websites. I want to purchase a doll from Gem of Doll but don't want to get into trouble with communication regarding their bad reviews about dealing with English-speaking customers. I experience it myself as they refused to sell the doll through agent and the only option is buying from them. But their price is higher than agent's. And I found this store on taobao but not sure if it's their official store because the price is at least $300 cheaper than their English website. I searched for this thread but couldn't find any recent.
@Quinn.nnp Both links to Charm Doll and Gem of Doll are legit. If you check the Wiki under Dollmakers, you will see both of them listed, Charm Doll's entry includes a link to the same taobao page. (The list is not completely up to date as new makers appear weekly.) You do want to make sure that you are linking to legit doll shops before you post up the links. Linking to recast sellers can earn your account an immediate ban from the forum. If you have a question about the legitimacy of a website, it's best to run it past us in Ask the Mods first to keep your account safe. I can't answer too many questions about buying via taobao as I've always resisted temptation. Perhaps this tutorial will be of some help to you?
Thanks idrisfynn. To be honest I haven't participated in any forum in nearly 10 years and just got back to this part of Internet because of this hobby. I'm trying to figure out the shipping cost if buying through taobao vs. English websites or agents. If they are not that much different I'll purchase on their English website.
I can't tell you if the Taobao shops are legit or not, but I can tell you some things about Taobao. Some things to note when ordering from Taobao. All of this is from personal experience (I live in the USA) and EXTENSIVE research: On Taobao, you have to pay a 1% credit card fee if you use a credit card. If you can use a Chinese friend's Alipay account, then great! Otherwise, you will be charged a credit card fee, as I have said, or you have to pay an agent to pay for you. You also have to pay for the currency conversion. Also, shipping directly from the company will be really really high (some companies may offer to pay half the shipping) and the Taobao warehouse will *NOT* ship anything bigger than and MSD sized box (even that is pushing it). You can use a shipping agent though, like Bhiner or other Taobao agents. However, you will not be able to correct any mistakes if you do so (I have asked the doll companies themselves), such as a broken doll or receiving the wrong order. The reason for this is because the doll companies only give you about 24-48 hours to check the order after it has been marked delivered and it takes the agents longer than that to go through all their orders and inform you that your Taobao order has been received by them (and to take pictures of your order if you opted for that option). You still save a little money in the long run, but not as much as you think. All the fees you have to pay for various services pile up and add to the bill. Please also note that some companies mark the order as shipped on Taobao, but it will not have actually shipped yet. I think this is because Taobao gives them some sort of bad mark against them if it takes too long to ship. With that being said, Taobao has an "automatic" review system that will leave POSITIVE FEEDBACK, no matter what after about two weeks after marking as shipped. You can use an "extension" once which will add three days to the counter. After those three days, you can only ask the seller themselves to extend the time. After that, you can't even open up a case against the seller to get your money back. You have to rely on the seller's good faith to help resolve your issue. I found all this out by scouring the help documents in Taobao. Even so, I took a risk and have four dolls on the way. So far I have not had a problem, but we shall see. If anyone has had a different experience I would be glad to hear it! Feel free to send me a convo.
Wow thanks for your reply. I haven’t placed an order on taobao yet but I asked a person who can speak Chinese to order for me on taobao and the company will send the doll directly to Canada. When I calculated all the cost it saves me more money than buying from an English speaking agent or the company English website. The reason is they all list the price as USD. For the purchase of few hundred dollars, the difference between usd and cad is a lot. Also I couldn’t find some services on the company website in English. I still have to pay the fee for the person who helps me order but it’s not a lot comparing to the agent fee. I don’t know the shipping fee yet because they will contact me later when the doll is finished. Also I heard that the waiting time is longer if you order through an agent. I ordered one doll through Alice and another one directly from the company. The 3rd one will be from taobao. They are all different companies so I’ll see which one comes faster. I haven’t owned any bjd yet so still am figuring out the various websites to order stuffs relating this hobby. Tbh this is the 1st time I feel kinda sad because I don’t live in my home country, which is much closer to China for all the shipping cost. But I’m afraid the dolls will get yellowing faster if I still live there as it’s very hot and humid. Oh and I found out to confirm the company shop on taobao just email them. AS sent me their taobao link. I’ll ask other companies too to make sure but I think the ones I found are legit as the price is not super cheap.
You are correct about the agent thing. Companies wait and ship out orders to agents after they have made a large batch. However, the doll companies will send the dolls to individual customers (both inside and outside of origin country) or agents in the same country as them as soon as the dolls are completed. I ordered something from BJDivas over a year ago and have yet to get my order. However, I ordered something from Alice's collections (located in China, I believe) and received my order within three-four months! Both of these orders were from Doll Chateau! I also use a Taobao agent sometimes and is the easier option when shopping on Taobao. In any case, I hope both of our doll escapades end with happy stories!
