Modification Leg-Paw Mod

Feb 8, 2025

    1. So, I was planning on making a kinda large-scale modification to my doll, something along the lines of replacing the human calves and feet with new digitigrade pawed feet. I've been doing my research and have settled upon apoxie sculpt/amazing sculpt as it seems to be the material that seems like it could handle the tension that stringing would need, just was wondering about the overall feasibility/practicality of the idea.
(maybe instead could alter the calves he already has to not have to remake such large parts, just wary since, don't want to mess them up :shudder)

Namely, about how big would the paws have to be in order to reasonably hold up the doll's weight like standard feet? I personally would like to have smaller paws, as that is more along the lines of what I have envisioned, but do not mind making them a bit bigger if an absolute must. I do plan on making shoes for them that may help with the weight distribution (roller-blades essentially, kinda big and clunky with removeable wheels so they can act like standard shoes)

And just overall tips I may need to know before such an undertaking, as I understand it will be a lot of work, but I hope it will be worth it in the end!

    2. So I’ve done quite a few hybrids with paws, and attempted a mod with apoxie at the joint and the question really depends on a few factors.
With apoxie and sculpting joints, I personally found the tension of a well strung doll is too much for apoxie alone to handle. as a result it crumbles and breaks and all that hard work goes to waist. So, it might be good to sculpt around the joints of an already existing pair of legs. youll need to be careful of the pillow effect though. Dollightful on youtube has several videos where she mods Monster High dolls, a lot of the mechanisms that she uses cant be transferred over but there is still good sculpting advice in there.
my personal ideal is getting a pair of existing fantasy legs and hybriding them to the desired body. several factors can make this process easier or harder. firstly, I find it is easiest to hybrid based on thigh circumference. If two different dolls have the same (or 1 or 2 cm off) thigh circumference then they can likely be put together. You’ll need to be especially cautious for SDs. If the hip pocket is too big the thigh, then the doll will not be able to stand (and it will be ugly as can be). its easier to match up MSD legs in my experience, since SD sizes - or maybe just the SDs i own - have more variation in their measurements.
Finally for stringing, the simple tried and true test of laying all the doll pieces out to the full height of the doll, folding the string in half and pulling to visually measure if the tension lines up should work. Youll have to string the doll with straight legs so the string will need to stretch that far. Ill make another post with some hybrids ive done in a second, just so you can see what im talking about

    3. MFirstly with the apoxie legs. I spent hours custom sculpting and sanding joints to fit with an impldoll body I had

She looked so good when I put her all together but I left the legs attached for a couple days and did some practice posing to see how it would faire and the apoxie did not hold up. A whole section at the side broke off and the whole project was completely scrapped as a result.
I've had far more success with MSD hybriding with DV fantasy parts. They're easier to get a hold of than you'd think! I just bought some off of the second hand marketplace here on DOA actually! Below I have pictured a hybrid between an aimerai girl body and the Dream Valley snow leopard legs, and the one under that is a Coral reef girl body with the Fawna deer legs. The Coral Reef girl body hybrid has a small gap in the thigh but its nothing too obvious or ugly but the Aimerai hybrid was a perfect fit! Both these dolls are still currently hybrids.

I also attempted to hybrid a pair of legs from the 70 cm Apocolapse body (horse legs) and I tried it on several bodies but had the issue that the thighs were too small to fit into any hip joint. I don't have pictures since those were just out of curiosity and none of the dolls that I tested stayed together. The DV boy is now back together with one of my favorite heads. I used the whole journey as an excuse to turn one of my favorite dolls into a satyr . Soom Fantasy parts for their 70 CM+ boys though I've had more luck with hybriding. Again, just check the thigh circumference and it should give you a general idea if the hybrid could work. It's not a guarantee obviously but it works decently well.

    4. Ah, ok! That is great to know! The doll I'm wanting to alter is about MSD size (45 cm), so hopefully a bit easier, don't have marketplace access yet but do hope to browse it someday! Those DV paws look almost perfect for what I had in mind!!

Edit: Was in a rush so forgot to say but, ty for the tips!!

    5. Resinsoul will cast paw parts on request I believe! I just saw someone's custom order in the discussion thread: /posts/13213254/

It might take a bit of modding to get them to fit on the body you want to use but at least they'll withstand the stringing.

    6. Ah interesting! Will def keep them in mind as well! Either way would take some modification since not looking to have fur on the paws but shouldn't be too difficult, I hope
(Since looking to put shoes [custom/heavily modified] on the doll after mods, and resin fur that sticks too far out may make things trickier)
