OT/General Leg/Hip Stringing Query

Jul 23, 2013

    1. Hey guys.

Just a quick question about stringing legs. You know how some dolls have a separate elastic cord to string legs separately through the hip joint (kind of sideways, rather than vertically with the rest of the body). Obviously the joint is designed differently too. Does it make a difference to how the legs move and how the doll stands and balances? Problems/benefits of both? I never held a ready-made bjd in my life, so any input on how this works is very welcome.

      Thanks.

    2. Although I have never tried it, I suspect this kind of stringing might affect the overall balance of the doll because the two legs then become sort of dependent on each other. For example, if you wanted to extend one leg only, the tension of the elastic would inevitably affect the other leg. I think it would cause posing the legs individually more difficult. I prefer to string from top to bottom through the whole doll because I think it helps to maintain a centre of gravity... But this is all just an opinion - I may very well be wrong! :D

    3. Good things: it limits the amount that the legs can swivel, and there are no visible slots.

    4. Thanks for your input :-)

    5. The tiny dolls I've made are done with this method. They stand/sit the same as a doll strung the 'normal' way, but it could also be because they are so small. There is a tiny bit more range of motion since the string is centered through the hip, so it can move a little more naturally then just foreward. If you are deciding to do a doll this way you can always make two sets, its not too difficult to switch between :)
