Aesthetics Learning lines and acrylic paint

Aug 12, 2019

    1. From my last faceup and discussion with DoA friends here, I started learning lines and using acrylic paint to do faceups (my poor head boy....he has been painted so ugly for many times....:|)
The first 2 pics were from 2 weeks ago, you can see the horrible lines. I was using very thin and long nail pen to draw the lines. Although I was able to make the line, the shape was so off.....
The last 2 pics were from last week. The overall look was better but I found the following really needing more practice
      1. the shape of the eyebrows and the lines
      2. the arrangement of eye liners
      3. the control of the paint flow

      basics are important, haha!

any suggestions will be nice. Thank you!

    2. The face-ups looks pretty good, I was thinking that the eyebrows could be positioned a little bit lower, and if the wig shown will be the final one, then it would look more realistic if the eyebrows were shaded with a reddish brown to match and not black.
Having a reference picture may help with the line direction.

    3. I really like the bushy eyebrows you did there, they look nice :)

I found this tutorial on eybrows quite helpful - if you are looking for a good breakdown of how to look at eyebrow shapes and how to emulate them when doing face-ups, this it: Mea's BJD Salon and Mea's BJD Salon.

    4. Thanks for sharing the tutorials, they make a good quick reference.

    5. I like them eyebrows! And I second the thing about their colour, if the red wig is your final then the colours of the 2nd picture would be pretty natural-looking.
As for suggestions, I'd soften the lip lines a bit and perhaps extend them further to the corners of the mouth. It might also be helpful to think about which colours would suit his face for the general shading, because he looks a little pale and bloodless in the bottom two pictures.
      Good luck with practicing!

    6. You’re getting there! Those lashes look pretty good, and you have the basic idea of the brows down, they just look a little high up on your doll’s brow like he’s raising his eyebrows in surprise. I think the hardest thing about working with acrylics is that you’re not really ever going to have 100% control so sometimes you just have to have a wet q-tip ready to wipe away and try again when your brush goes astray.

I’m wondering if you blocked in your eyebrows with pastel first? If you look at the second tutorial @werelyan shared, you can see the artist already had the shape of the eyebrow pretty much done, and then added hairs onto a template she’d already drawn (and sealed) for herself. Trying to freehand hairs onto a doll and not get carried away (not to mention match up both brows) is really difficult! It’s easier to fiddle with a shape in pastel with a kneaded eraser until both sides match up, then you can add your lines to add depth. Again, have a wet q-tip ready to wipe away anything that strays over the template so things stay neat looking!

    7. thank you so much for sharing this tutorial. really useful!

    8. Thanks for your comment. I firstly laid the shape of eyebrows and then added on lines. I think I got carried away. It felt so good to draw lines, hahaha:wiggle

    9. I agree 100% with the first comment, ALWAYS use at least one photo reference. I'm an artist, have been for 25+ years, and I still use references even when drawing subjects that are familiar to me. :) Keep practicing, you are doing great!
