Aesthetics Learning faceup (advice needed)

Apr 5, 2019

    1. Hello everyone ^^

I decided to learn how to do faceups and would like to improve in this area.
I tried doing faceups 6-7 years ago, but it was so bad.

Now I am almost starting as a newbie. My only model for painting is Doll Family A Damien, who belongs to my friend.

      Materials I use:
      Mr. Super Clear
      Mungyo pastel
      Koh-i-noor watercolour pencils
random gouache paint (want to get new one)

      My first attempt:

I enjoyed it A LOT. This time I tried only pastel+pencils.
What I don't like about pencils is that they leave uneven lines.
Also tried freckles, but I don't think they look natural.
The problem I had: scratching Mr. Super Clear. I am not sure why it happen, maybe my pencils were too sharp.

      The second attempt
      [IMG]

Here I started using gouache painting for eyeliner, but it was very hard to maintain line.
Tried putting more color this time and don't be too gentle. Also, I tried lines on the lips and I hate them.
Moreover, my friend's character is a bad guy, so I tried to turn this sculpt into meaner one, but it didn't really work.
His sides are so different, I think I prefer the left one at the image xD

I will be waiting for any feedback and advice >D thank you all in advance for help

    2. I think they look great. I'm going to follow this thread because I have the exact same issues. Uneven/gritty lines. Gouache i cannot get the right consistency. The lines on the lip seem thick like mine, most are thinner. I've also scratched up the sealant. xD

BUT I also go wayyyy too far with my faceups. I don't know if its just I need smaller brushes, less pastels .

I invested so much money into all the brand name supplies I'm kinda regretting it LOL!

I wish I could help you more, but I think you're doing amazing :) Hope you get some answers.

    3. I’m personally not a fan and never will be of pencils for any line work. Brush and paint all the way. If you can thin your paint enough and have the proper brush (I use a liner and script liner brush) you can achieve quite flawless and even lines. No matter how sharp a pencil is or how experienced the artist is, I can always see the texture up close and in zoomed picture and it bothers me; of course this is only my personal peeve about it. Some people love pencil work.

The sealant will also have a bit of an impact. Sealants with more toothy textures (great for having the pastels adhere to) can leave painted lines a bit uneven, but nowhere near as bad as when done with pencils. If you have a headcap you can seal and practice on, try to do that and see how different mediums and sealants affect line smoothness for you.

MSC has a lot of tooth. ZM is velvety smooth and more conducive to line work, but ultimately practice, the right fluidity of paint, and brush will help you achieve more successful line work.

    4. I work with what I’m good with! Pencils and pastels. I love the way acrylic looks but my hands are far too shakey. I think it’s important to not compare my face ups with other people’s and appreciate my own style :chibi

    5. My lines are also kinda gritty when I use watercolor pencils ;-; I mostly use it to sketch out the eyeliner, seal the head and then go over the eyeliner again with black acrylic paint to get a darker and sharper line. I don't know how people make their pencil lines look so smooth and I'm kinda jealous hahaha

    6. Oh I think it would be great if we can find some answers together : DD I am going to post new faceups in this thread too.

I understand about investments : D I am also usually the one, who spends all money on great supplies haha. This time I just used what I had, but I am planning to get new brush and new gouache paintings today

Thank you soo much for your reply! I will try to invest in some better paints and brushes, so I can do thinner lines. This time I just tried with what I have, and I feel like it’s not enough.

I would try both to see what is good for me. Still not sure how it will work with paints. But yes, I think you should be comfortable with medium.

Haha can relate. Yeah, I am thinking about using pencils as “sketch” for more detailed work with paints.

    7. I also tried doing some blushing and I actually enjoyed it. It's much simpler.
I would some parts are still a bit uneven, and it's not the most obvious result, but I still think that it looks good.

    8. The second round is more pronounced. I find the shape of the eyebrows too arched but that's a matter of taste. Maybe a little cheek blush?
      Hands are well done!
