Latex base for wigs

Jan 3, 2020

    1. Just started working on my first wig, for a TINY Xagadoll Yuri. After reading many of the more recent posts, decided to go with latex. I used a layer of medium weight tulle and 3-4 layers of latex with plenty of drying time in between. Liking the semi stretchy feel a lot, but before I move on to wefting, I have a few questions:
If you've used latex, have you used it also for attaching wefts?
If not, what have you used that worked best?
I'm leaning towards fabric glue since it dries clear, but would love to know other people's experiences/advice.
      Thanks a million in advance

    2. Yeah, I was wondering this too, as latex can be messy to work with & leave little white specks everywhere.

    3. Yes, I use it for everything. Making the the base, making the wefts and attaching the wefts. It's nice because it kind of sticks to itself, so you can temporarily place the wefts in place to see if it looks right and it will stay there. Then take it off, put latex on, stick down. Dries very fast and clear. The only other thing needed is foil to put the wefts on and a rubber applicator to spread the latex on. I use something like this: https://www.jacksonsart.com/handove...MIhu3Kidzn5gIVGeDtCh2M-AZOEAQYASABEgJvlPD_BwE

The main downside for me so far has been some small amount of shrinkage with the base after it is dried and taken off, but I've learnt to just over-compensate and make it bigger than it seems it needs to be when making it. This picture kind of shows the process. I have some other pics of wigs I made on my Insta. I'm still a newbie to it by all accounts, though, so would be interested in other people's opinions/thoughts.
@pistachidoll on Instagram: “WIP of wig #2 they go through a crazy cavewoman look while the hair is unstyled and uncut. I'm having bad tendon pain at the moment I…”

      Best of luck!

    4. Thank you so much, this is extremely helpful, as are the pics in your IG. Your crew is beautiful!

    5. Aww thank you <3 I look forward to seeing what you make!

    6. Thanks! I might give that a go!

    7. I have been curious about using latex to make wigs as well -- I'd like to try my hand at it at some point, but after watching a few people and WIPs,a bunch use craft glue, or Mod Podge (which I personally think is the better since it's waterproof when dry), but those aren't stretchy.

But do you find that the latex smells bad? >_> I have one that was made for me at one point (with latex for the cap and some additional latex sticky lines to give it a bit more grip), and I really like it the style and colors, but the smell is so awful that I've had it stored out in my back porch in the hopes that it would eventually fade. It is going on 4 or 5 months with no sign of that happening, so now I'm hesitant to use it at all. :sweat

    8. It is kind of a bit stinky while it is still wet, but seems to dissipate once totally dry. I'm letting each layer cure a couple of hours before laying down the next. I haven't actually put my nose to the cap but I'll check for residual stank. Maybe it varies by brand? I'm using Casting Craft mold making liquid latex.
Update: I sniffed the inside of the cap, there is no detectable smell.

    9. Yeah, that is probably it. :sweat I will make a note to get a good kind when I do get some! :)

    10. I tried latex made for cosmetic purpose and crafts on skin as well. It smells awfull while wet and especially while appling, but absolute free once dried/cured. Mine smelled like rotten eggs because ... how is this chemical element called >___<

But I prefer latex base caps over the mod podge ones. But I will continue to make both :)

    11. Once you move on to the wefts, do you use latex or another kind of glue? Thanks in advance:3nodding:!

    12. Ta-dah!

Still have to do a LOT of cutting and styling, and next time use lots less fiber, but not bad for a first try. Love the latex as a base, it stays on the head nicely, way less slippage than regular wigs!

    13. My intention in using latex was making wigs washable. Back story was, I sprayed too much conditioner on a glued alpaca wig and it was almost oily TT__TT This is how learning and progress works, right? XD"

And because I want the the wig to be washable, I use latex for the cap, wefts and to combine both. But I am also looking forward using latex only for the cap if it allows me to use a specific wig for more than one head of the same size.

I would love to comment on your first try, but the photo is too tiny for me to see >///<

    14. I had a lot of issues posting and this is the only size it let me post, here is the link to the original

Super poufy still, I need thinning scissors and way less fiber on the next try.
Thank you for the input, I need all the help I can get!

    15. That wig looks great @anjamd! I've been curious about trying latex... I'm worried about thickness though. I'm working on the same size of doll you are (in fact, I have a few from Xagadoll!) and the less thickness I can get the better. I'm curious about how that worked out for you at that scale?

    16. TYSM! I actually love the latex as a base a LOT. The squishiness helps the wig stay on without the need for Velcro or sticky tack. I already made a second wig cap, using thin stretchy jersey, and it hugs her head even better, definitely using that from now on. I learned to stretch the material evenly and to avoid gathers around the edges because it adds thickness.
I would love to peek at your girls, I am loving xagadoll's poseability and looks!

    17. Thanks for the photo link. Your wig looks great, especially for the first try.
And although I did more than one wig, I still end up using too much fiber XD"

    18. Thank you! It's a learning curve, right?! I purchased a razor comb and thinned out the bangs and the ends all around and it majorly improved the looks, especially around the face. Planned to buy thinning shears but they were quite a chunk more money than expected. The razor comb does work great tho!

    19. Ahhh that's great to hear! And I have pics on my doll insta (in my sig)...! I have both of the boy body types and one of the girls (the same one your girl is on!). They're so cute.

    20. I LOVE your smol family! Infatuated with this size. I have a dollhouse in storage that would be perfect for this size.
Using white mohair for my second wig, wish me luck!
