Lane: A 55cm Girl

Apr 21, 2015

    1. It's only my second time sculpting a bjd, so I know that it's gutsy to take on a large doll, but here it goes! Feel free to join me!

Here are my initial sketches of Lane:

After, I tried to measure things out and make the real plan so that she'll look normal with other dolls. I don't have any SD sized dolls in my house at the moment, so I had to get resourceful!

    2. Next, I made a thin cardboard (and drinking straw) core for the head and torso.

I covered these in a thin layer of LaDoll clay.

Now she'll be drying overnight. That's all for today!

    3. I really like the proportions that you've drawn out for her. She looks good! Very tall and slender.

    4. Thank you Molly! I wanted her to be very slender looking, while still being a tad shorter than most SD girls.

    6. Oh, those hands and feet are looking good already! Did you have a reason for choosing a square-ish shape as the head inside? It looks interesting

    7. Thank you so much! I like hands but I find feet very tricky. The core I made was based on a tutorial I watched. I thought it looked interesting too, so I thought I'd try it out! I also thought it might make the inside of the head look neat, so we'll see about that! The tutorial is here if you're interested:

    8. It's a little dark at the moment, but here's an update to say I'm still working away!
Here's a glimpse at her face for now:

Here's an extra hand that I started carving bones and finger nails into:

And here she is, strewn across her blueprint:

    9. Another update after chopping her up and removing some of her core.

She definitely needs to bulk up in some areas, but I'll get to that.

    10. She looks pretty cool already. Her face turned out very cute, I love her smile.

    11. Thank you! I started to work on her face a little bit more so that it has more dimension. Still a ways to go though!

    12. I wanted to share with you guys that I started playing around with my brother's 3D software and created this face! I started digitally painting him a bearded faceup. Anyway, it makes me wish I could 3D print a doll!

    13. It's cool to follow your progress. I really like the profile of Lane's face. I'm excited to see how she ends up turning out!!

    14. Wow, thank you so much! It's fun to post updates, but it's extra fun when I know people are checking in! ;)
Today I worked on a few things. She now has some blobby ears that I will carve, sand, and fix up later, some juicier thighs that also need sanding, and a double joint happening in her right arm. Her left forearm broke when I tried to get the core out (you can see it crumbled beside her) so she'll need a new one of those.

She's also starting to request a new name. Two of my characters have been in the runnings for the name Lane, but I think another name might suite this girl better! We'll see!
