So, my clay is giving me lump problems. It gets these small lumps in it that are really hard to smooth out, and I'm pretty sure they're not air bubbles--when I try to pop them, they don't appear to be filled with air. I think it's little bits of slightly dried clay. When I set scrap lumps down, some of them are smaller, and they might be drying fast. If this is the case, is there anything I can do to give it an even consistency again?
I've had this with re-used clay where the surface hardens a little and I've mixed it back in - I've found by kneading the lump I'm about to use with a touch of water and letting it "rest" in an airtight container helps with the dry bits...
It's hard to re-integrate those little dried lumps. Whitewings' method should help. You also do a bit of prevention by keeping a piece of plastic wrap at your work area to cover up your scraps.
