LaDoll Premix Scoring

Jun 13, 2015

    1. I am currently making the walls of the body and legs a little thicker on my BJD that I am trying to make. I cut them in half to do it. I don't want them to actually be bigger, so I am doing it on the inside to give them more strength. In one very good tutorial I watched on YouTube, the BJD maker stressed the need for scoring the hard LaDoll clay before adding more. It said it needed to be dampened and scored or the new clay wouldn't adhere correctly. I know it needs to be damp but do you also have to score the dry clay when adding more to the outside or inside? I sure would appreciate an answer asap if anyone knows about this. Thank you.

    2. I haven't used LaDoll but I work almost exclusively with airdry clay and I've never needed to score it. However you need to be very throrough when dampening it (leave some time for it to soften a little bit) and use quite some pressure to add the new clay. Also smooth down the parts where they join, that's what I think really makes them stay together.

I don't know if LaDoll has the same properties though, I just speak from my own personal experience which might not apply!

    3. Thanks so much, varebanos, for your help. It is appreciated. This is the first time I have sculpted anything and my first BJD, so I feel a bit lost at times.

    4. you're welcomed! I can't promise ladoll works the exact same though, you have to experiment and see! but the smoothing out the edges so they blend is crucial!

    5. I realize this thread is a bit old, but yes you do need to score LaDoll and wet it, if you don't the pieces you add will have more of a tendency to pop off. You should also be scoring the fresh clay you add as well. This essentially gives clay "teeth" which can interlock better and give it a more solid connection. LaDoll is actually a variety of stone clay so the rules for regular stone clays apply, the only difference is you shouldn't get LaDoll as wet as you would normal stone clays when slipping and scoring because it can become the consistency of cream cheese if you do. ^w^;;; However it's forgiving so if you get it too wet, let it air dry a bit and it will be workable again.
