LaDoll in the Oven

Jan 31, 2014

    1. Anyone ever done it? I love LaDoll clay. Love. And I swear I'd quit polymer clay after trying air dry clay but sometimes a slightly thick layer of clay will take up to a day and a half to fully harden. And I'm almost done with my project and I'm eager to finish and move on to painting and molding.

Has anyone ever put LaDoll clay in the oven and sped up the hardening time successfully? I predict speeding up by oven will create uneven hardening and make it brittle and crack. But I'm about to test out my theory now. Anyone else try it? Thanks.

    2. Experiment success!! Put a small 1 inch x 1 inch x 1/4 inch piece for 20-30 minutes under 250 F and it's 8 hours worth of unassisted air drying. Took it out, just a bit warm and started sanding it. Held up like a pro. Color comparison perfect also. \o/ Just an FYI to any LaDoll users.

Edit/Add: Had aluminum foil wrapped around (not crumpled into it) to aid as a heat conductor.

    3. That didn't even occur to me! I should really try that. I hope it works as well with Creative paperclay. Smart doing it with aluminum foil.

    4. Let me know if it works with Creative Paperclay. I'm curious to know! Yea! It cut my working time by a gazillion.

    5. Yeah you can put paperclay in the oven too, I've done this a couple times. But you have to make sure it's not too hot or the clay will burn and it smells awful. But yeah, it works well to speed thing up. I actually put my pieces in front of a mini heater for a similar effect, and I can multitask with sculpting/(whatever else) since the heater is in my room with me and it only takes a few minutes for the clay to dry enough to accept more.

    6. Thanks a lot for posting this! I've have just started working with LaDoll and was getting a little impatient over drying time … ;)

    7. When I'm using LaDoll, or similar clays, I set the oven at a 75 degrees Celcius and keep the clay piece in there for a long time. The oven is cool enough to keep they clay from cracking, or burning.

If your clay piece cracks anyway, the only thing you'll have to do is to fill that crack with uncured clay and let it dry. Unlike Super Sculpey, uncured and cured LaDoll work fine together.

    8. Another big update I've learned from my local sculpture shop. MORE so than my new oven I use my HEAT GUN/tool to cure the clay quick! It makes it hard enough to work with in minutes.

The heat gun by Martha Steward was one of the first things I bought from the craft store when I started sculpting with polymer clay. I tucked it away in my craft supply boxes and never used it again until the sculpture specialist mentioned she uses it for magic-sculpt instead of an oven. It clicked in my head that I should use it for LaDoll as well.

      Have fun. :D
