Knitting Knitting Pattern for MSD sized hat

Feb 25, 2007

    1. I've created a knitting pattern for an MSD sized hat and wanted to share it with all of you.

      You will need:
A ball of yarn. Scrap will do, this doesn't require too much
      Double Pointed Needles (4)
      Straight Needles (2)
      A large sewing needle
      An hour or two

First, cast on 60 stitches on the two straight needles.

Next, transfer 20 stitches to a double pointed needle. Repeat until you have three needles with 20 stitches each.

Join the row and place a marker.

*Knit two, purl two* Across entire first row

*Knit two, purl two* Across entire second row

Knit 10-15 rows. I did 9 and my hat came to less than half a centimeter above my doll's eyebrows. It's up to you how many to knit.

*Knit 8, knit 2 together* Across entire row.

*Knit 7, knit 2 tog.* Across entire row.

*Knit 6, knit 2 tog.* Across entire row.

*Knit 5, knit 2 tog.* Across entire row.

*Knit 4, knit 2 tog.* Across entire row.

*Knit 3, knit 2 tog.* Across entire row.

*Knit 2, knit 2 tog.* Across entire row.

*Knit 1, knit 2 tog.* Across entire row.

*Knit 2 tog.* Across entire row.

You should have 6-8 stitches left on your needle. Cut a long length of tail from your working ball. Thread a large needle with the thread and pull through the remaining stitches. Pull the needle through to the inside of the hat and bind off.

Ta da! You have a pretty hat with a nice pattern on the top! To jazz it up a bit, why not change colors? Add pompoms? Try a lace pattern on the knitting rows? It's up to you!

If any of this is unclear feel free to ask questions. I designed the pattern myself, and I hope it works for everyone else like it did for me.

      Pictures forthcoming!

    2. What size needles do you use?

    3. I used size 4 or 5 mm needles. The needles don't have numbers on them and I didn't bother to check. I casted on with 3 mm needles, and the double pointed needles were a size or two larger than them. I didn't have a gauge. I just used scrap wool for the pattern.

    4. Here's more information for this vintage hat pattern:
My Unoa avatar with the pictured wig has a hat circumference of 7.5 inches. With the 60 stitches in this pattern, that's 8 stitches per inch. That gauge would take needles of 2.25-3.25 mm or U.S. size 1 to 3 and a category 1 yarn (meaning sock/fingering/baby yarn).
I hope that helps anyone who'd like to try this pattern.

    5. This really does help. Thank you. My doll (on order) has a 6.5" head, so I'll use size 0 needles and see how it works. I'd love to see a photo if you have one!

    6. @Bundles Do you have a wig you will use with your 6.5 inch diameter bjd head? My Unoa had a 6.5 inch head also, but I took the size of the thin wig into account for the size of the hat.
I don't have a photo yet. I need my IT guy to choose a photo hosting site so I post a photo.
I hope your doll comes soon! :)

    7. Thanks! I think I have another month to wait. :( I had a dream last night that I was opening the box, so maybe that means she'll arrive sooner than expected!

I do have a wig on order (3 actually!), and come to think of it, my favorite one is curly/wavy. So... maybe I'll wait to knit this after I receive her.

    8. @Bundles You could knit a scarf while you wait! :3nodding:
I have some wigs I would never mash down with a knit hat, so waiting until the doll and wigs arrive might be a good move. I'm excited for you!

    9. Thank you for the pattern :)
