Knitting Knitting Circle V7

Nov 11, 2014

1. Let's start with the last picture posted in V6 by ByronicHeroine:

2. Regarding knitting, I am curious whether some of you have ever converted a pattern for Barbie doll for the MSD size just by going up one or two needle sizes? (While I know that a finer needle will look better, it should be possible in theory? Or will it be too chunky and/or wide in the bust/shoulder area?)

3. Barbie patterns are usually knit with fingeringweight yarn, so to get a Barbie pattern to fit the larger BJDs without altering stitch counts and instructions you'd not only have to go up a needle size or two, but also use even thicker yarn.

Give it a try. Designing knitting patterns requires lots and lots (and LOTS!) of trial and error, knitting and reknitting.

4. Depending on the style, you might be able to use fuzzy yarns like light weight mohair to increase the guage and retain a delicate look.

5. I just some yarn I ordered from knitpics and I really love it. I ordered after I saw the dress wovenflame made using it for the drop stitch dress and collar.
will use some for my next project. For now I just finished a dress for a Big eye'd girl off topic for this forum.

6. some of the alpaca laceweight work like that too. they are fuzzy enough to work at a larger gauge without looking silly but still have a nice soft drape and make a thinner fabric.

7. I'm back to working on my dress too. Just finished the drop stitch section, so hope to get the rest done within the next few days. I had 3 newbies arrive that need welcome home outfits! Anyway, the magic loop seems to be more manageable, so I'm pleased!

Also just received my pack of 13 circular needles with the steel cables, for about $10, no shipping! They look well made. I do wish my Boye needle gauge went lower than 2m though! I did a cabled test swatch with the 2m size and some of auntbear's yummy lace weight yarn!

8. Great, thanks a lot for all the tipps! Next year, I think I will finally make the jump to laceweight yarn (up until now, I am mostly stuck with the fingering yarn ^^ however, I am already "practicing" for my MSD with a similar sized doll and hope to already have some nice things ready...)

EL BJD, if you don't mind me asking, did you order the needles packge from a seller in China? I am thinking about getting some, mostly because the "good" needles here in Germany are a bit expensive. Please let us know how they knit up when you have them :)

I simple LOVE the "knitpro" wooden needles in square format (cubix), but my only DPN set are currently occupied - with socks. We are getting closer to Christmas ;)

9. Have you tried Knittybitty? They are not that expensive, I think. I got my 1.75 mm from them. And I think they've got thinner needles, too. I'll have a look and send you a message on Ravelry. (Btw you could ask there, too. A certain Michaela from Berlin has tiny needles... ;) )

10. Yes, those are the ones. The tips aren't as sharp as addi turbo lace in the smaller sizes. I might look for addi's in 1.25m if I start using that size a lot. I already have 1.5m, 2m and 2.5m.

11. Does anyone know where to get size 1.5 and 1.25mm bamboo needles from?

12. The smallest bamboo needles I have seen are 2 mm. Bamboo may mot be sturdy enough for smaller needles.

13. 2mm is the smallest I've found bamboo needles (and I managed to snap 2 double-points knitting doll socks on a flight)

Teddy

14. Darn! I was hoping to avoid steel for small knitting, since I'm having one heck of a time using 2mm steel needles as it is.

15. You can try carbon needles, but sometimes there is a tiny gap between the tip and the main needle. You can get KnitPro Carbon needles down to 1 mm. But I don't know about circular needles in that size.

16. Thank you! I might have to look for the Addi turbo lace needles, then... (with needles I learned that buying the more expensive ones can save your fingers -- and your mind, if the needle is inferior and you get mad about it ^^")

17. What bugs me about the knitpro carbonz 1mm DPN is that they do not have a metal tip. I get it, in this size this might hardly be possible, but for knitting, I really abhor them >_< (the 1.5 mm DPN are fine, they do have a metal tip)

But El BJD made a good point; I will try to hunt down lace needles ]:->

18. Obviously Addi has circs in 1.5 and 1.75 mm, but not 1 mm. My 1.25 mm are steel and should be handled with great care, they are so sharrrrrrrp. ;) I love them. :)

19. HiyaHiya has the best tiny knitting needles (1.50 and below) I've found. They don't have the sharp edges that some of these tiny Addi needles have and their cables are softer and have better transitions too. Ever since I found HiyaHiya's, I threw out all my Addi's below 1,75mm :)

20. Don't know if any of you have seen this, but I love these cute hats that come with Innocent Smoothies and they have now uploaded lots of cute knitting patterns for these here
http://www.thebigknit.co.uk/knitting-patterns

21. Cute! I love all the comical variations. By my calculations these should come out to fit about a 5" head, knitted according to the pattern.

22. Thank you Wiske for the HiyaHiya recommendation for below 1.75mm. I am currently knitting a project for my minifee (msd) on addi 2.5mm circulars and quite happy with it - styled after one of those barbie patterns mentioned earlier except that I happened across the finished product, a cozy jacket, at a yard sale, which fits my littlefee (yosd) perfectly. It is made in a super stretchy double-moss stitch that lies flat with no curl and drapes well. I have scaled up and will follow the garment as I go. Fortunately none of the yarn ends were woven in so it is easy to read how the garment was constructed.
I have a tiny on its way and might need smaller needles soon.

Ishtar - Fun link. A great cause, and cute hats.

23. those are cute and would make some fun christmas gifts for my littles for christmas..

i've been on a stash busting crochet bug lately and made a couple of blankets for an ikea bed for one of my minifees. i just finished washing the bamboo under blanket and found i've achieved mixed results

[IMG]epic swatching fail by onebluestocking, on Flickr
the top blanket still needs blocking but it is exactly the right size and coming out just how i wanted, in spite of the fact that each of the laceweight yarns was just slightly different so my squares all came out slightly different in size as well. i had to keep changing the yarns i used till i found ones that worked both colorwise and were close enough to be blocked to fit.. after the whole thing was done, since i crocheted it together as i went along. each square somewhere is between 1-1/12" (i don't have a tape measure handy, so was guesstimating with my thumb). it was crocheted with a 1.25mm hook.

the bottom blanket is an example of an epic fail in swatching. something i actually did for a change too! it was supposed to be just slightly bigger than the top blanket, just enough so the border would peek out, but the yarn i used shrinks horrendously when washed and somehow i miscalculated. the width is dead on but it is about 4" too long, and if i rip it back the hook i used will be too big to rework it :...(

24. Your blankets look great from here, auntbear! One of these days I might try granny squares again, if I can spare the time to try out join as you go!

I took a break from making clothes for the kiddles today, and decided to dig out a fractal doily I was working on a while back.

25. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

26. Oh my gosh, what a sweet outfit, Bagirka!

27. well it does make it slightly less portable since you have to carry the whole thing with you so you can add each square as you finish it... but for those of us who are really poor at finishing it also ensures i don't end up with a bag of squares that never get sewn together, and it's really easy to just join it on the last row anyway i find. i also sew the ends in each square as soon as all four sides are enclosed so i know i haven't made a mistake on it. that way i have less ends to sew in when i finish.

that outfit is adorable bagirka and it fits so nicely, especially the hood! did you sew the leggings too?

28. Great new things! Ishtar, thanks for the link, I did not think that these could also be used for dollieh purposes :)
Due to a dentist appointment, my BJD was postponed to next year :( However, I cannot wait to see if the things I am knitting for her off topic counterparts will also fit ;) Will knitted items for Tonner fit an RS body (I think I will go with single jointed)? Knitted items might be stretchy enough...?

29. I don't know what an "RS body" is, but I assume it's some sort of MSD and you're talking about the 16" Tonner fashion dolls rather than one of the other Tonner-doll sizes.

Most knits, (and a few of the clothes) for the 16" Tonner fashion dolls fit my Narae (slim mini) - although arm length and hand size can occasionally be an issue - if that's any help?

EDITED TO ADD: A motof knits (and other clothes) sized for Ellowyne Wilde also work for Narae too

Teddy

30. Great, thank you Teddy! Yes, with RS I meant Resinsoul MSD body :) Then the short sleeved things (and hopefully skirts) might fit. I have already been told/seen in patterns that trousers for MSD need a bit more "bottom space", though.

Oh, are the Tonner 16'' and the Ellowyne different body types? I assumed they had very similar bodies! Good to know on the hunt for clothes! :)

31. They look similar to me but I don't have an Ellowyne to compare in person - Patterns for the two are usually marketed for one or the other doll type, seldom both. Lots of the Tonner dolls that are around that size have different measurements (and there seem to be at least three different body sizes within the Tonner fashion-doll range when you take the smaller busted ballet-body type and the larger-all-over Mrs Clause bodytype into account). Although knitted stuff is pretty interchangeable on those three, and my Narae I've found.

33. Another adorable sweater & hat, Bagirka!

I bought several 16" Ellowyne crochet dress patterns for my 2 MSD's, an Angell-Studio Dina and a Unoa Chibi. They fit fine. I was also told that Blythe clothes fit my SleepingElf Fallow, so I bought 2 knitted Blythe outfits at such a reasonable price, I couldn't resist. They recently arrived and fit Fallow very nicely. I haven't had a chance to take any pix as yet.

Good points re granny squares and join as you go, auntbear!

34. Yes, ellowyn and regular Tyler toner are ver different in size

35. having seen some discussion by a pattern designer for tyler tonner who told which of her patterns worked for ellowyne and why - tyler is bustier than ellowyne, narrower in the waist and bigger in the hips. somewhat more of an hourglass figure. i know of the two, ellowyne patterns (both knitting and sewing) are easier to adapt to my minifees. they take less changes. but both are doable if you have the patience/skills. and since they are both much easier to find than patterns designed specifically for my dolls i have a tendency to try :) i haven't worked with resinsoul dolls so don't know how they relate.

another cute outfit bagirka! you have been really busy

36. was an order for light green sweater with smiles , that's what happened
[IMG]

37. Oooh! Green-and-yellow - one of my favourite colour combinations!

Cute too

Teddy

38. Very cute smile sweater

39. Bagirka: All of your sweaters are absolutely adorable! I love the little colorwork embellishments!

40. I just realized there was a new knitting thread--I've clearly been hiding under a rock and missing some really great projects! Your blankets are absolutely gorgeous Auntbear!

• x 1
41. it turned out nicely and you chose such pretty colors.

42. Thanks, auntbear. It's the same ball of Noro Kureyon, a continuous bit of it. The centre of the ball was a horrid mustard yellow & green transition which I cut out & discarded. My very first ball of Noro too, gak!

43. El BJD, your colors look so great! Adorable!

44. Oh that turned out fantastic, El BJD. I love, love, love the colours! It really works well as a tunic over leggings. I'll have to make my elven girl a pair of leggings too.

45. Thanks everyone! The next set will be for my Angell-Studio Dina. And hope to have thinner leggings for both girls by then! Can't wait for your next pattern release, Wovenflame!

Today, I'm having a problem figuring out what a UK pattern means by 2ply yarn on 1.75mm needles. No test gauge was given, nor brand name suggestions. I've made 2 false starts already on rompers for a realpuki, both done on 1.75m needles. I wish there were photos that I could hold my yarn up to and be good to go!

46. I was working all gangbusters on it until I got distracted by the Feeple60 arriving, and now I have to scramble to prepare for Christmas. But I hope to have something together this month.

On Ravelry yarns labeled as "2ply" in the UK are considered laceweight. You can do a "yarn search" for 2ply and a long list of suggested yarns will come up, like this: http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/search#view=thumblist&query=2ply&weight=lace&sort=best

47. Thanks Wovenflame! I saw your new girl. I'd be distracted too! She's lovely!

48. I made this pattern that was designed for Les Cheries dolls for Inkeri:

Downsizing was quite simple, instead of 3 mm needles I took 2.5 mm and 4ply sock yarn.

49. CanI ask you... If you exclude breaks and TV watching etc.... how long would it take to knit something like this? Beautiful BTW... :)

this wee outfit is simply GORGEOUS!

50. Another beautiful dress, Aurinel!

51. I take it you mean Inkeri's dress?
It wasn't that long. Two or three hours maybe? If you knit slowly.

52. Aurinel, Inkeri looks so sweet in her new dress :) However, imho the socks do not match the colours of the dress XD

EL BJD, it turned out beautifully! Always nice to see these beautiful tunics, and tweaked a little bit :)

53. Jaybird, that sweater is so cute! Does it open in the front, or is the border just ornamental?

54. That's right, but with the new overall that problem is solved. :)

55. Thanks! It opens at the front and closes with snaps on the seed stitch band.

Aurinel that little green suit is just the cutest thing!

56. take everything you want from the second post and put it in the first using your edit button. then look under your icon for the triangle with the exclamation mark in it. if you highlight it it will say "report post" you can click on it and it will get you to a screen where you can report the post and ask the moderators to delete it as a double post, which they will happily do for you. you can't actually delete it yourself

by the way very cute hoodie jaybirdfinnigan. it fits really nicely! and those onesies look really cozy aurinel
