Knitting Knit - Two-Tone Ribbed Shrug for Slim Mini

May 27, 2008

    1. Here is a different, yet easy, shrug for summer dresses. It is quite easy. I think it would also look great in a black and white combination.

      Two-Tone Ribbed Shrug

Adapted from “Fitted Sweaters” by Stefanie Japel

Will fit 43 cm slim MSD dolls such as Narae and Unoa

Merino Wool Lace Weight Yarn by KnitPicks
Gauge: 13 sts per inch, 16 rows per inch with 0 size needles

KFB – Knit 1 front and back: Inc 1 st by knitting into the front and back of the next stitch

PFB – Purl 1 front and back: Inc 1 st by purling into the front and back of the next stitch.

M1P – Make 1 Purl: Inc 1 st by picking up the bar between the next st and the st just knit and purling it.

sl – Slip a marker from the left needle to the right needle, knitting the sts before and after it as usual.

With size 0 needle in MC, cast on 25 sts. Do not join.

Row 1: (WS): PFB, purl 6 st, place marker, purl 13 st, place marker, purl to end. 26 sts.
Row 2: (RS): KFB, [knit to 1 st before marker, KFB, sl marker, KFB] twice, knit to end. 31 sts.
Row 3: PFB, purl to end. 32 sts.
      Rows 4 – 21: repeat rows 2 and 3.
Row 22: Repeat row 2, 91 total sts

NOTE: The sts in the section between the two markers is the lower back edge. The sts outside the markers are for the sleeves. Each sleeve should have 28 sts, and the back should be 35 sts.

Place the back and right sleeve on holders.

      Left Sleeve:
Row 1: PFB, purl 26 sts, PFB = 30 sts
Row 2: KFB, knit to last st, KFB = 32 sts
Row 3: PFB, purl to last st, PFB = 34 sts
Continue to knit in stockinette stitch even for the next 12 rows. [Total of 15 rows.]
With 000 needle, change to CC and work k2, p2 rib for 16 rows. Change to 0 needle and cast off . Seam sleeve.

Right Sleeve: Replace right sleeve sts on needle and work as for left sleeve.

Ribbing: With RS facing and beg at back right shoulder, using 000 needles and CC, pick up 112 sts around the entire edge, including lower back edge from stitch holder. To be knit in the ROUND, with whatever method you prefer. I used the “Magic Loop” method, dividing my stitches in half, with 56 sts on each side.

      Work a k2, p2 rib for 8 rounds.

      1st Inc Round: K2, P1, M1P, P1, M1P, K2, P2, K2, P1, M1P, P1, M1P, K2, P2 (3 times), K2, P1, M1P, P1, M1P, K2, P2 (17 times), K2, P1, M1P, P1, M1P, K2, P2 to next round.

Work one round in rib, keeping in pattern correct by working p4 in the increased sections.

      2nd Inc Round: K2, P1, M1P, K2, P1, M1P, K2, P2, K2, P1, M1P, K2, P1, M1P, K2, P2 (3 times), : K2, P1, M1P, K2, P1, M1P, K2, P2 17 times, : K2, P1, M1P, K2, P1, M1P, K2, P2 to next round.

Work 6 rounds in K2, P2 rib as established.

NOTE: You want the increased stitches to appear at the neck seam edge, one on left side and one on right side of the back, one each on the front, half way point of the sleeve edge, so it is near the bust. Depending on where you placed your 112 stitches, this might be a bit different from mine. I placed a thread marker in the purled stitches where I thought the increases should appear.

3rd Inc Round: You will now increase as you did before in between the previous increased k2, p2 places, working like the first increased round.

Work one round in rib, keeping in pattern correct by working p4 in the increased sections.

4th Inc Round: You will now increase as you did before in between the previous increased k2, p2 places, working like the second increased round.

Work 5 rounds in K2, P2 rib as established. Change to 0 needles and cast off all stitches.

Weave in ends and block if desired.

      Have fun!
      Cynthia

    2. Dollswest, what sort of wool weight is this shrug in? In the UK we have 4ply, DK, etc but I'm not sure what Lace Weight Yarn is, can you help as I'd love to have a go at this for one of my dolls :) Thankyou :D

    3. KayJay - Lace weight yarn is quite fine. I think it would be like 22-24 wraps. Check out the Knitpicks web site, www.KnitPicks.com and look for lace weight yarn. It is the finest yarn they list. The shrug is out of bare and I dyed it. Lace weight yarn is finer than fingering and DK. It is used for very fine work. Hope this helps!

    4. Very nice shrug. Mayby I will try it form my Katie (Souldoll Kid) :D
