Knitting Knit - SD Socks

      Tiny Monkeys

      (socks for SD/Delf Girl)

I started with the No-Purl version of Cookie A’s Monkey pattern, and rewrote it for doll size.

I worked them cuff down 2AAT (2-At-A-Time ) Magic Loop on one circular needle, but I’m showing the pattern as one sock which can be done on either circular(s) or dpns, and I’m not providing directions for 2AAT because a) I’m too lazy and b) I do it a little differently than the Melissa Morgan-Oakes method and I don’t want to confuse anyone. Experienced 2AAT –ers won’t have any problem doing them that way, I’m sure. And I’m not providing stitch distribution for dpns - some use a 5-needle set and some 4 - so suit yourselves; there will be 24 instep stitches and 24 heel/sole stitches (before gussets are picked up and after the gusset decreases).

      Needles: Size 5/0 (000 00) (1.0mm) circular or dpns

Yarn: cobweb or very fine laceweight

Twisted Rib: (K1tbl, P1) repeat across

      Lace Pattern:

I amended the pattern to a 12-stitch repeat, in lieu of the original 16-stitch repeat, to fit the 48 total stitches used for these doll socks.
      Round 1 Knit all
      Round 2 (K2, K2tog, K2, YO2, K2, SKP, K2) repeat
Round 3 Knit all (7th st = Ktbl)
      Round 4 (K1, K2tog, K2, YO, K2, YO, SKP, K1) repeat
      Round 5 Knit all
      Round 6 (K2tog, K2, YO, K4, YO, K2, SKP) repeat
      Round 7 Knit all

      Directions:

Cast on 48 st for each sock

Cuff: Work twisted rib for about 1/3 inch

Leg: Work Pattern Round s 1-7 six times, ending with a Row 6

      Heel:

Work heel flap back and forth on 24 stitches:
      Row 1 RS (Sl1, K1) repeat
      Row 2 WS Sl1, P23
Work these two rows 11 times

Turn the heel, still working back and forth, starting on the RS:
      Row 1 Sl1, K13, SKP, K1, turn
      Row 2 Sl1, P5, P2tog, P1, turn
Row 3 Sl1, K to last st before gap, SKP, K1, turn
      Row 4 Sl1, P to last st before gap, P2tog, P1, turn
Repeat Rows 3&4 until all stitches have been worked.
14 stitches remain on the heel.
K across all st on RS and resume working in the round.

      Gussets:
P/U 11 st +1st in the “crotch” between heel and instep sides.
Continue in pattern (this will be Row 7 the first time - continue to keep track!) across the 24 instep stitches,
P/U gusset on the other side as the first, 1 + 11.
You will now have 38 stitches on the heel side (12 + 14 + 12).
K two rounds even, continuing to work the instep stitches in pattern. The beginning of the round remains where it started. Yes, one gusset will have one less row than the other. It will be unnoticeable even to you when the sock is completed, and, of course, your doll won’t complain.
On the heel side only, reduce one st at each gusset end every other row (I do: K1, SKP, K……, K2tog, K1) until 24 stitches remain on the heel side.

Foot: Work even until 5 more repeats of the pattern have been worked on the instep side (11 total). You may need to adjust the foot length to fit your doll, she can try them on carefully, and only her toes should be showing when you start the toe decreases.

Toe: Reduce one st at each end of BOTH sides every other round until 16 st remain, then every round until 8 st remain. Cut yarn, thread a needle and cinch up the last 8 sts. Work in ends. Wash. Block. Admire!

      Notes:
      1. This can be used as a basic pattern by substituting plain stockinette or a 2X2 rib for the lace portions. It's easy to figure the row count from the lace pattern, or you can just work to the leg and foot lengths appropriate for your doll.
      2. For my Delf boy, I used this basic pattern, substituting a 2X2 rib for the lace, and substituting a heavier laceweight yarn (I used Jaggerspun Zephyr, KnitPicks laces would also be good choices) and 3/0 (000) (1.5mm) needles.
