Knitting Knit - "Mod" Poncho for Mini

Jan 10, 2008

    1. MSD Sized “Mod” Poncho

I’ve never written patterns out for other people to try to follow, so if there are any flaws, please let me know! Comments and suggestions will be very welcome. I’ve also written it out longhand for any beginners that might find it easier to follow and keep track of your rows. I am making these for sale, but DOA members are welcome to use this pattern for themselves or to create items for sale.

I made the pictured poncho with size 4 US (3.5mm) needles, in Dreambaby DK, and Yarn Bee Featherwisp (double strand) for the accent color. Any DK or sportweight yarn plus eyelash yarn of your choice should do. If your eyelash yarn is thick enough, you can just use a single strand. Guage in main color is 5 stitches per inch in stockinette.

This poncho is knit from the collar down, with a “make 1” increase at each edge and two “make 1” increased in the same stitch to form the center ‘V’. Note – the two “make 1” stitches in the same stitch is a little difficult, but results in a nice flat increase and a pretty stitch pattern. The poncho is seamed part way up the back, leaving an opening big enough so you don’t have to remove your doll’s head.

Have fun with this! This pattern would be very easy to adapt to any size poncho, longer or shorter, SD-sized, extra eyelash rows, etc. and color combination you could wish for. Pattern follows in next post.

Row 18: knit (this will give you a garter row, which makes the eyelet yarn stand out more)
      Row 19: knit 1, make 1, knit 21, make 1 twice in same stitch, knit 21, make 1, knit 1 (48 stitches)
      Row 20: knit
Cut eyelash yarn and pick main color back up.
      Row 21: knit 1, make 1, knit 23, make 1 twice in same stitch, knit 23, make 1, knit 1 (52 stitches)
      Row 22: purl
      Row 23: knit 1, make 1, knit 25, make 1 twice in same stitch, knit 25, make 1, knit 1 (56 stitches)
      Row 24: purl
      Row 25: knit 1, make 1, knit 27, make 1 twice in same stitch, knit 27, make 1, knit 1 (60 stitches)
      Row 26: purl
      Row 27: knit 1, make 1, knit 29, make 1 twice in same stitch, knit 29, make 1, knit 1 (64 stitches)
      Row 28: purl
      Row 29: knit 1, make 1, knit 31, make 1 twice in same stitch, knit 31, make 1, knit 1 (68 stitches)
      Row 30: purl
      Row 31: knit 1, make 1, knit 33, make 1 twice in same stitch, knit 33, make 1, knit 1 (72 stitches)
      Row 32: purl
Attach eyelash yarn. Cut main color, leaving a long tail for sewing the seam.
      Row 33: knit 1, make 1, knit 35, make 1 twice in same stitch, knit 35, make 1, knit 1 (76 stitches)
Row 34: knit (garter rows again)
      Row 35: knit 1, make 1, knit 37, make 1 twice in same stitch, knit 37, make 1, knit 1 (80 stitches)
      Row 36: knit
Bind off knitwise. Tack the ends of the eyelash rows together. Sew the remaining seam to just past the eyelash yarn in the middle section.

Using a tapestry needle and a single strand of main color, you can thread a drawstring across the first row just under the collar. I started mine from the middle of the front, threaded it through to one side, left a loop, then threaded it back through to the front. This way I can loosen it up, slip it over my doll’s head, then tie it in front. I added a bead at the end of each drawstring.
