Aesthetics Justice for NJ's dolls!

Feb 23, 2024

    1. So.

      I have dolls. Eleven of them. I've been collecting these dolls since 2019 (I've been collecting various dolls since 2009, but all of those are off-topic here). I love these dolls so very much. But right now, they're all stuck in their boxes, blank and naked.

      I did do a few face-ups, but didn't like them, so I wiped them off. I started working on some clothing, but never made anything worth mentioning. Or putting on a doll. Or actually finished.

      I'm all thumbs, a slow learner, and I have a chronic tendency to jinx myself. I say out loud I have some kind of plan, and then all sorts of unfortunate events happen that make me abandon it. I tried to join the sewing project twice already, but then became ill or had to move unexpectedly and my plans fell through once again. Twice again? Hmm...

      But not this time!

      I may be an untalented walking talking bad luck charm and The Procrastinatrix Extraordinaire, but I’m also very stubborn! I will stick to this one and bring my dolls justice and care they deserve for how much joy they bring me (even when they're face-, eye-, wig- and clothes-less).

      (I hope this pic is in line with the rules. I think it is, but I’ll remove it if needed)

      The dolls are - in no particular order, because the photo is a total mess:

      Withdoll SWD Vera the Two-Faced Girl, the dark version;
      Withdoll SWD Cecily the Polluted Girl;
      Peak's Woods FOC Vampire Tristan;
      Withdoll JWD Elf Hunter Emma;
      Luts Model Delf Dia;
      Withdoll JWD Luna;
      Souldoll Soulkid Elfin;
      Souldoll Soulkid Linzy;
      Withdoll JWD Eve;
      Luts MDF51 Saturn on MDF Type 2 body;
      and a second Withdoll JWD Elf Hunter Emma

      I will take these dolls one by one and put them together. Except for the first two, which will get worked on more or less simultaneously. I want each doll to have a face-up, eyes, wig, and one outfit by the end of the year.

      I already have eyes and wigs for a few of them. For now, all my dolls have the exact same wig, just in different colours. Samey, lacking imagination, but I love that particular wig and I know I will always like it on my dolls, so it's every doll's first wig. I will diversify their options in the future, but for now, they all look nice in this one and need other things get taken care of first.

    2. The first two dolls I'll work on will be two of my Withdolls - Elf Hunter Emma in grey and Luna in brown tan. I want to do Emma first, because she is my first BJD and has been suffering for the longest time (she had face-up at one point, but it was no good), but Luna will be steampunk themed, which goes with this month's Sewing Project theme, so right now I think Emma will be the first one to get face-up, and Luna will get clothes, and then they'll switch places...

      Please pardon the crappy quality, I'm at war with my phone and had troubles resizing. I'll figure that one out as I go along.

      The to-do list:
      • give Emma a presentable face-up
      • join the Sewing Project and make Luna some clothes
      • give Luna a presentable face-up
      • join next month's SP and make Emma some clothes
      I do have wigs and eyes for both ladies, so this round is just face-ups and sewing.

    3. What a lovely collection! And that group photo is beautifully composed! I hope you try to have fun along the way in this process, it's important that this hobby make you happy and not feel like a chore. :hug:

      I'm sure you've seen it, but this thread has a lot of easy projects compiled that work up quickly! The caftan is my personal favorite since it's so versatile, but I've found a lot of inspiration here when I'm not sure what I want to make up next for naked dollies.

    4. Eleven naked and blank dolls?! I'm overwhelmed just looking at them! You have a lot of work cut out for you. Take it one step at a time. It's okay if the first ones aren't perfect. By the time you have the experience from all 11, you'll want to go back and redo the first ones anyway. Don't get stuck on the idea of perfecting at first! Good luck!!

    5. Can I just say, “bought a lot of dolls, love them but they’re all blank and in boxes” is SO relatable to me xD You’re so not alone!!

      I think choosing one-two dolls at a time to dedicate to as your project is a good idea, I hope you have fun and don’t stress about it ^-^

    6. This reminds me so much of my early collecting days! :XD: So many pretties, but all nude blank and bald! I am so proud of you for taking the initiative to finally start working on them! The wonderful thing about our dolls is that they will always wait patiently until you are ready to work on them. So take your time and enjoy the process :dance You will have a fun year ahead of you!
      And, I'm actually looking forward to seeing all your dolls in the samey wig too, I think it will make their differences shine :3nodding:

    7. Lol the pic of them all piled together :lol:

      Doing all 11 in a row is such a great practice and you'll see yourself getting better with each doll so it'll be quite encouraging to keep going! And when you get stuck on something, you can always take the next doll instead of brooding over the same thing for a long time = guaranteed progress. Good luck, cheering you on on this journey!

    9. I love the 11 doll picture. Gorgeous posing!
      If you are still learning to do face-ups (like me), may I make a few suggestions?
      Pop off all 11 heads and line them up. Yup - you're going to do multiple heads at the same time.
      Plan out your undertones and face-ups. I print out and use this:
      [IMG]

      Amazing undertone tutorial here.
      Pastels and acrylics tutorial here.
      I would recommend working on 3 to 4 heads at a time. Do the same thing for each head - undertones, eyebrows, eyeliner. I found that I am physically incapable of doing the exact same thing, so each face ends up looking different.
      This is how I taught myself to do better eyebrows, by the way.

      If after 4 heads, you are still unsatisfied with a particular feature (me: eyebrows), take a break and watch some face-up tutorials on YouTube or reels on Instagram. After you've done 3 or 4, you know what you're looking for, and you can see more of what the other person does.
      Wipe those heads and start over.
      Alternatively, if you really like one head, wipe the rest and try to recreate what you did on the one that you liked.

      Also, re undertones: do NOT use blue or purple on brown faces. It just makes them look bruised.

    10. What skintones are those blue/teal? Dolls? They are gorgeous colors!

    11. Great advice overall, but i have to disagree on this point. I use purple (very carefully and intentionally of course) on my tan and brown heads to add some dimension and it works absolutely beautifully. A little under the eyes and in the crease of the nostrils? Even just a touch under the cheekbone? Beautiful. It's all about having a light hand though, and i do predominantly reds and oranges and browns on my tan and brown faces. But they'd definitely be missing that extra bit of delicate dimensionality without the purple.

    12. I'd love to see pics, if you would be so kind as to drop a link. Maybe I'm using the wrong colors? My poor little Ya looks like she staggered out of a bar fight.

    13. @Mamo Thank you! Don't worry, I'm definitely having fun with this project! Thank you very much for the link. While I do have a rough idea as to what I want to make for each doll, stuff happens (and as I mentioned, I jinx myself all the time), so I'll keep those patterns for emergency purposes! Also, I know myself, I might get distracted by another fancy event colour and get a new doll before I finish these, so some makeshift couture will definitely come in handy!

      @nyaaain I fully expect myself to want to start redoing the face-ups the moment I'm done with them, but that's ok, it's part of the fun! Thank you very much for your encouragement!

      @pashades I'm so glad I'm not the only one to have done this :XD:

      @Novalyna Aww, thank you so very much, that's so sweet of you!

      @cobaltconduct Thank you! (It is one desperate pile, isn't it?)

      @werepuppy Thank you!!!

      @MaleficentMrsofEvil Thank you very much for your advice! I won't be doing more heads at once, I've already tried that when I only had three dolls, and found it incredibly distracting. I really can only focus when I'm working on one. But I love those tutorials you linked, and definitely will be using them!

      @DontShoottheDucks I'm afraid this isn't a good photo, colour-wise. It makes the dolls look way more blue than they are, it doesn't represent their real colour well at all. The fantasy colours are:
      • the mini doll standing in the middle in front of the only standing large doll is Luts bubble mint, it's an event colour, but it comes up for pre-order pretty much every event
      • the large doll kneeling next to the bubble mint one is Withdoll sweet blue, it's not limited, it's available as a regular colour
      • the mini kneeling in front of the sweet blue one is another Withdoll, in grey, and it's actually a warm grey, you can see it better in the second post. Also a regular colour
      • the doll with translucent hands sitting in the middle of the pile is Souldoll coral purple, it was a limited event colour in 2022, and hasn't come back as of now. It looks much more blue in this pic than it really is, it's a cool shade of purple, but still distinctly purple
      • on the very left is another Souldoll purple, this one is p.lavender blue, and despite its name, it's also very much a purple colour and looks too bluey in my photo. This one was also a limited colour, for spring and summer events last year, also has yet to return. I posted a comparison pic of the two here, although I had troubles making the colours work on my phone and my monitor, so it's still pretty bad
      I hope that helps!

      Once again, a huge thank you to everyone, I didn't expect this many comments, and I really, really appreciate all your support. I had an unexpectedly busy weekend, but I'm determined to get something done this upcoming week!

    14. Oh super interesting how lighting does that! Thank you so much for the color names. I actually have a bubble mint tiny, but i didn't know about the other colors! I might have to get a sweet blue withdoll some day

    15. I will definitely follow this thread! I too sit in the midst of a pile of unfinished dolls:sweat I hope this will inspire me to start working on them one by one:thumbup

    16. Best of luck to you with this project! :)

      While I agree with the others that your collection looks lovely the way you present them on the group photo, bald and naked as they are, I think starting a project journal is a great way to get things rolling for finishing them.
      Joining the Sewing Project is another great way to get things done, I participate as often as I can and I have a huge amount on nice doll clothes that I've made thanks to that over the years. The deadline of the end of the month helps me stay on track and get things finished, but everyone is always so nice and helpful and never judgemental when things don't work out, so there is very little actual pressure.

      Focusing on one or two at the time is probably a good way to go about it. Especcially if you are developeing characters and individual styles for them as you go. Doing it more assembly line -style may work if you have something that all of them will have done the same way, but if you need space to get to know them individually it's probably a lot more rewarding to focus on a few at a time.
      I bought a WD Emma (human version) last year and she is a pleasure to work with. I'm sure you'll enjoy the process.

      I am looking forward to see what you'll make.
