Just starting out

Mar 28, 2008

    1. I'm trying to make a doll based on ABJD in my ceramic class. It's my first attempt at a doll and i'm going about it in a similar way to some of the things i've read on this site and in Yoshida's book. I am working with Porcelain instead of sculpty. I am also planing on making plaster molds and slip casting it in order to make multiples. (I tested the process with a small earthenware model) Here are some pictures of my in progress:

front of head i'm not finished with it, in fact i'm a little dismayed at how not feminine it is...

      Side of head

This is the head set on the body, i stuck those "arms" on it for scale, it's hard to see just the torso with the head since you don't get the full effect of the size of the shoulders.

Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated.

    2. I love the torso, and the head is great, but I know what you mean about not feminine...I have trouble with that, too. Maybe make the lips a little fuller, and bring the bridge of the nose down so it starts more between the eyes...?

    3. *nods* ok, I'll try that....

    4. The images are so little T_T Maybe it's just me? But just in case it isn't....

RAWR, I can post your images cause it's my photobucket account XP

      I'd post feedback, but I've already talked to you in person so I feel it would be silly to repeat myself ^^;;

I still think the torso is turning out nicely though ♥

I'll agree with what was said about the nose though. As I mentioned to you previously, I thought something about the brow seemed a bit off. Perhaps lowering the bridge of the nose will help?

    5. No problem ^_^

    6. How many joints are you planning for there to be? Just hip, shoulder, and neck, or are you going to break down the arms and legs into two pieces each? What about the torso?

I think it's fine with only a few joints, but she'll be hard to pose. With porcelain, I'm guessing you only mean her to display?

I love her torso, btw. Proportions are beautiful~

    7. i can't decide if i want to break the torso...i probably will, but i am on a time constraint. It depends on if i have time to fix her after i cut. The arms and legs will be separated into parts (upper, Lower, joint, foot/hand, and nob between foot/hand and leg) and i'll have to cut the head cap out of the head.

I have some pictures of what i did to rework the head, but it's a REALLY bad camera (I'm talking free with clearanced out printer bad) The other pics were taken with GTK's camera...

I'm still working on it. the eyes still need to be worked on, but that's about the size the opening will be.

    8. I think she looks really good now, I love her nose!

    9. I like the changes you've made to the head, her lips look really nice.

    10. wow, it looks like you edited quite a bit O_O And she kind of has actual ears now! *laughs*

I think around the eyes looks a lot better now though ♥

You mentioned in conversation with me that you were afraid to edit too much of the head because of the proportions on the body. How did that turn out? Everything still work ok?

I'll bring my camera to class tomorrow if you'd like XP Just shoot me a text message ♥

    11. very kool.

    12. Wow, such a huge BJD! And i think she'll come out cool ^^ Keep it up! :)

    13. yes...she is HUGE.

with the process i'm doing (hand building, making mold, and slip castin) there is a lot of shrinkage. (14% just for the first round of porcelain firing) my drawing has her starting out at 90cm. She should be around 70cm once finished. (might be a little larger, then that, but 70 is what i was aiming for)

    14. here are some updates on my progress....

    15. that body looks real good, I like the way the boobies turn out xDD

    16. Oh, wow, didn't realize how BIG the doll was! XD Looks amazing, though~ I agree with Arameki - that torso sculpt is gorgeous <3

    17. She reminds me a bit of Drew Barymore(sp?) XD

    18. Boobies~ <3

I know you were worried about them, but I still don't think you should make them smaller XP

I can't tell for sure.. is one of the eyes higher than the other? I know you mentioned to me before that you were waiting on something before doing something to them (I...er... forgot exactly what it was you said. I've slept since then DX)
It doesn't seem like one is higher in the last photo, the one on the body, but I'm not sure if it's cause the head is slightly tilted there?

Or I could just be crazy... in which case, carry on!

    19. Like GTK said - the tatas are fine but the left eye is a little higher. She's still very pretty though.

    20. Wow, I love the size! Keep up the good work. The molds are going to be so heavy!

    21. The torso is nice, and I love the second edition of the head. But there's something wrong with the way the forehead works on the third edition...take a look at the area at the top of the nose between the eyebrows, and consult some anatomy books.

That is a very nice torso, though. Good luck!

    22. wow! It seems that things are going well. You will have to show me her when you get her all done. You are doing a great job with her.

    23. belated update...ready to fire version (it changed dramatically because i had a little problem hollowing it out and had to start over on the head and arms...)

This is compared with an unoa and a lati L

    24. Wow, she is huge compared to him! Aren't the Lati boys, like, 65cm?!

She's lovely though! Just really big. Though her legs look a little short. Or that could just be that I am used to seeing resin girls with about ten miles of leg. ;) And her feet look a little small.

    25. She's great! You gave her some really beautiful curves!

    26. I never did get to properly see the feet in person once you'd finished, so I can't really say anything about those (though I will agree that they do appear smallish... though I'm not sure if it's simply due to the angle?)

I also agree with the legs, but know that you added to them and made them longer. I think it is mostly because her proportions are more realistic and less stylized so she doesn't have uber long super model legs XP

Also, her hands are awesome. You should have taken better photos of them XP

    27. i personally think her legs and arms seem sort of wide. I want to fix that with my next attempt....Making her legs longer would have helped (i considered it, but i didn't have enough time to change it and i didn't want to make her taller, but she's so tall i guess a few more cm couldn't have hurt anything...) :sigh

I also think the next on is going to be a slightly smaller and made with Le Doll instead of Porcelain

    28. I really, really like your project ^^ It's interesting to see "art dolls" that are BJD-inspired, not just BJDs. Good luck slipcasting, etc...mixing plaster is the fun part!

    29. Hi Tofu, are you going to pour your molds in porcelain slip and then fire her or are you using wet porcelain clay? If you are, I think that she will shrink approximately to the same size as your Unoa.

    30. lol, she won't be as small as the unoa, the shrinkage rate it about 14%, but i did plan for her to shrink to about 70 cm.

    31. Well, my class is over and i ran out of time to make the molds and cast dolls. (i still kind of want to try it on my own, but i also kind of want to start over on a new doll so i can fix the problems with it before i start making multiples) I made her an outfit based on a friend of mine's character design so i'll show pictures of both....

Yea....i need to start paying more attention to the background when i take photos.....but atleast you get the idea of what she looks like :sweat

    32. Wow.... Now she's like a little sisiter of yours! :D But the problem is in the pics i cant see the whole of her! Im curious about her face too! :S

    33. Wow. She came out fantastic even for an "unfinished" doll. o_o She's so lovely. Shame you ran out of time, though.

    34. Thank you. I did kind of avoid taking pictures of her lower half. I'm honestly not as happy with the legs, she is kind of heavy and doesn't stand as properly as she should and her feet aren't exactly pretty. I really want to get started on a new one so that i can work out the leg joints a little better. (there is so much i want to do and so little time T.T)
