1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? So far they've held up well! -knocks on wood- Hopefully that doesn't change. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Hands! They can be so detailed and expressive. Also easily broken from what I've heard, and I used to own a doll body with a glued hand by its previous owner. But thankfully, I never had an issue. -keeps knocking on wood- 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? More of a casual mention, testing the waters so to speak. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? My mother has often asked how much I spend on them. Most times I won't tell her the full cost to avoid judgement - she's the type that doesn't understand why you spend x amount of money on something she would never buy...yet spends an excessive amount of money on things I'd deem not worth it. :/ Honestly, no one should really be asking cost unless they're interested in buying one for themselves or as a gift. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Floating heads. I've got them wrapped up but I always worry that they might get crushed or stained. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I wash my hands before handling. Other than that nope. I got over the fear of yellowing (and staining) long ago. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? It depends on the character. I've got a bit of both. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Yup, such an odd question too... 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? I personally don't care. But oi it gets really annoying to come across posts where people are posting dolls with absolutely no context (name or pronoun) and then get upset at people because they referred to the doll as x gender. o.O 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Au natural!
Oh, this looks fun! Okay, I’ll give it a go. 1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I think they are stronger than they look. They look and feel almost like porcelain or something that would break easily, but I’ve had several of mine take a tumble and the most they ever ended up with was a scuff or two on their faces that came right off with a magic sponge. I had a doll at a meet and someone accidentally knocked her off a shelf. The girl was so upset because the doll was a limited and she ended up with a scuff on the end of her nose. I’m just like, “No worries, it’s all good” and someone had a magic sponge. A little bit of careful rubbing and her nose was good as new. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Definitely fingers. I know someone who had taken a Dollshe boy to a meet. He was wrapped really well but somehow his finger broke off during transport! Also, pointy elf-ears, especially if they’re really long. I’m always paranoid I’ll accidentally chip or crack my Elf Dahlia’s long ear! 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? Depends on the friend. Two of my closest friends know about my hobby and my one friend is fully supportive. She loves them too and goes with me to meets and such. Has even helped me host a few in the past. Other friends are aware I collect but I don’t really discuss it with them. I don’t think they get it quite as well, although one is a total Star Trek nut and has a huge collection of all things Star Trek (including every episode of every series ever made), so I don’t think he would criticize much. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It depends, again. I actually feel way more comfortable disclosing actual amounts to total strangers than I do with people I know, like family members or some friends. Usually, if asked, I just say “really expensive” and leave it at that, and they don’t usually press for more specific answers. lol 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Doll stands. Especially bigger ones (like for any doll over 70cm). I mean, how do you store something like that? I suppose if I take them apart I could put them in a drawer but that’s kind of a pain to have to unscrew the stands from the bases and then put them all together again whenever in need one. Plus, some of them can’t actually be fully disassembled. I’ll usually bubblewrap spare parts like hands or feet or fantasy parts when they aren’t being used to protect them from potential damage. I have one spare head and recently bought a 3D printed bust stand for it so I can display him with the other dolls. The stand is neat and wasn’t very expensive, I might have to get a couple more if I ever get more spare heads. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I don’t wear gloves or anything like that but I do make sure my hands are clean. I try to store them away from direct light, dress them in light colors to avoid stains, etc. I keep most of them in cabinets with doors which helps protect them from dust and such. I try to take care of them because they’re so expensive, I want them to last awhile. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? A lot of my dolls are fantasy so lace and crystals and such are part of their daily wardrobe. I don’t really like feathers, though. I think those are TOO delicate and tend to damage easily so I avoid them if I can. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Not really. I mean, I’m straight so the characters I create for my dolls tend to be straight when I bother to give them any kind of sexuality at all. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? I have a minifee Shiwoo Elf and people always would call him a girl. lol To be fair, he has a girly face and his default wig is long, golden curls so it isn’t surprising. I don’t get offended, I think it’s funny. And yeah, I might’ve pantsed him once or twice to prove he was a boy, although removing his shirt usually works, too. One thing that does bug me is people who get mad when people mistake their boy dolls that are dressed in frilly clothes and long wigs and have feminine faceups as girls. I mean, if you are going to deck out your boy dolls uber-girly (or your girls uber masculine) then you do NOT have the right to get all pissy when strangers inevitably mistake their gender. Apply a little common sense there, ok? 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Yeah, they do and I think they mostly wear briefs. Although I do have a couple pairs of boxers for them, too. Except for the two guys who are full-on fantasy and tend to go commando under their robes. Undies just would ruin the whole look.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I've never scratched, cracked nor broken any of them so far, my oldest resin BJD is thirteen years old, and my oldest resin head sculpt is fourteen. So far so good, I guess. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? The fingers. I haven't broken any yet, but they are the thinnest, smallest, more easily broken parts that I can see. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? No. I don't have non-doll friends; all my friends collect some sort of doll or another, not all (if any?) are into these kinds of dolls however. All my family and friends know I collect toys and dolls of all sorts. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? No. I don't usually bring it up myself, but if people ask I'll tell them no problem. It's not a delicate topic for me. It's my money, I don't hurt anyone while buying what I buy, so I don't feel the need to hide their costs, nor I feel like I should advertise it either. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Unused lashes. The boxes take too much space, but they get ruined if stored outside of their original packaging (and I own too many new/unused ones). Also shoes. I haven't found a good, convenient way to store them yet. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? Not very delicately; they are expensive toys so I try not to use brute force, but I don't treat them like they are made out of glass either. I don't like handling them directly for too long. I usually put a shirt or pants on them, so I can handle them without gloves, while not having to touch their resin/plastic directly with my bare hands. I keep them wrapped in their boxes, inside my dark cool closet, because I like my fur babies to be safely away from them, and vice versa. They never get any direct sunlight regardless, because I am a weirdo. I am not a fan of bright sunlight (it depresses me), I keep dark curtains in my room at all times (even before I got into these dolls). There's very little sunlight going on in my room at any given time, and I don't take photographs outside, because I am a weirdo and I am terrified of any and all kinds of bugs -- my dolls get zero sunlight, which is around the amount I get myself. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Yes, I do! I am not into wearing feminine stuff like make up, heels, or lace. However, I do enjoy looking at it from afar. My dolls are the perfect vehicle for me to enjoy those delicate things, without out me having to wear any myself. I'm vegan however, so I don't enjoy the look of feathers on anyone other than the birds they belong to (same goes for real leather, fur). 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? No, they are plastic toys. If they were living humans, then yes, but they are plastic. All my dolls are asexual, nonromantic because they are... plastic. DX 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No, getting gender or sexual preferences wrong for any of my dolls is not important. I find it extremely funny because I always think of my dolls as very manly, or masculine-looking (at least the male ones). Yet, I have had people confuse a few of my manlier-male dolls for female. I think a few times they were just language barriers, where they used the pronouns for "her/she" instead of "him/he," but I don't mind either way. I have never shown private-areas in any of my photos. I do enjoy taking nudes, but most modern people seem to think that nudity is inheritably sexual, so there are stricter rules about posting nudes (of dolls) in certain social media outlets. Making it a bit of a pain in the gut to take many (I'm lazy, so I prefer not having to sew clothes for my dolls, if I can get away with it). 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? I would say I like both, but because I have to sew them for my dolls myself, I prefer none. XB
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I have had a doll lose fingers. But other then face up getting chipped they have been strong. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Fingers 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I have no non doll friends, relatives yes but don't talk dolls with them. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Yes as I worry about being mugged. Yes and I have told them to Google BJD and find information. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I haven't found anything difficult to store, and other then tissue paper around certain shoes that's all I have done. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? No gloves and nothing special as far as storing away. Sunlight I try and keep to minimum. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Strong, sturdy and no staining. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? No. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Just chest as it's usually the boys they think are girls, but that was only my late mother in law. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? My girls wear underwear if wearing dresses or skirts. I find underwear can effect how my dolls stand as they are getting wedgees in legs.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? Stronger than they seem! I’ve never (not tempting fate!) broken one, but I have scratched face ups & body blushing. Face ups are mostly my own though, so worst case scenario is I wipe and re do it. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Eyesockets and fingers. Really scared of breaking either, especially fingers when changing clothes. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? Mostly open, though not with everyone at work knows. My dollsare on display at home so anyone in the house will see at least a couple of them. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Yes, it is. I wince and say, ‘They’re expensive, because they’re hand made, painted & finished.’ 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Floating heads! I have a lot, and I store them in a drawer with fabric or tissue between them if they don’t have boxes. And CoAs... I keep those in a yoSD box. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? No gloves. They sit out on shelves but not in direct sunlight, and most are in a room with closed curtains. I’m more careful with the ones with company face ups or that don’t have a spare head! My favourites are actually some I have several duplicates of so they get more handling & trips. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I like either to be honest. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Not really, though no one has ever asked and it’s a bit weird because my dolls don’t have sexuality. The characters in my books do. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? I’ve never had anyone get it wrong, most of my male dolls are clearly male and I rarely take my female dolls out. The ones I take out most frequently have beards, so... 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Yes, they all have underwear! The girls have normal knickers, the boys have either anti-stain tights, or boxers or both. I dunno, I just like them to have underwear!
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They definitely seem sturdier then they look, considering how often I handle mine. That being said... a few of mine do have scratches from restringing, re-glued fingers, and cat bite marks. The worst damage so far is definitely the re-glued fingers 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Absolutely the hands and the fingers! My Luts Kid Delf Centaur fell over (didn’t fall off any thing just... fell over) and that was enough to snap off three of his fingers. Also my cat is a chewer and frequently targets my dolls’ hands lol. Fortunately I think the bite marks are cute (so long as he doesn’t do it again) 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? My non-doll friends will never find out about my dolls lol 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Yup, like sure they can drop several hundred dollars on a game console or whatever and that’s fine but I can fell their questioning judgement if I pay that much for a doll. Usually I lie about the price haha... 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? It’s the BOXES! They’re too big and I don’t have a lot of space XD 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I keep them out of direct sunlight, but I’m always touching, handling, or cuddling them :3 Yellowing and staining doesn’t bother me 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Little bit of Column A, and a little bit of Column B. I just like whatever’s pretty! 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? None of my dolls have a canon sexuality (except for one based off my oc) so *shrug* I’m not bothered 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? I haven’t had that happen before. Considering only my one doll that’s based of my oc is a “pretty” dude who actually gets remarks like this in his canon, I wouldn’t be bothered. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Considering that most of them are centaurs... nope!
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They are much sturdier than a lot of people seem to give them credit for, and I definitely don't treat them as if they're made of glass! I did crack the knee of one girl who came to me so tightly strung that bending the joints was almost impossible, and newb that I was, I tried to force it. That aside, nothing has broken during normal play. I wouldn't like to see any of them take a face dive onto pavement, though! 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? The fingers. While I've never snapped any myself, I do know people whose dolls arrived with fingers that broke off during transit. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I don't really talk about my dolls with non-doll friends unless they express an interest on their own. I mean, who wants to hear you ramble on about a hobby that they find uninteresting? I have a dear friend who avidly collects antique car parts (I think he hopes to make them into an actual car one day, but it's been years, so...) and much as I love him, it's an effort to keep my eyes from glassing over when he shares passionate stories about them. I use that as my cautionary personal barometer when talking about my dolls to the uninitiated! 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? I think that asking how much anything cost you is pretty rude, actually, unless the person who is asking has an interest in buying one for themselves. If that's the case, then I am happy to share - but if they're just being nosy, I generally laugh and say, "a LOT," because I seriously doubt that a non-doll person's response to the actual price will be, "Well now, that seems quite reasonable!" 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Tailored shirts for my big guys. I just can't get the hang of folding them properly, and the fabric is so fine that they always seem to wrinkle or have folds in all the wrong places when I take them out of their boxes. I hate ironing those tiny things! 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I wash my hands before I touch them, but I never wear gloves, because that would make me feel more like a museum curator than a doll lover! I do worry about sunlight, though, since I want to keep them looking good for as long as possible, so I store them in their boxes when I'm not actively playing with them. But, I'm not obsessive about it - I enjoy taking them outdoors for photos sometimes. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? My dolls are all pretty casual so far, although I do have one who wears traditional, silky Korean dress and another whose fantasy outfit includes a pair of very fragile stockings. For the most part, "delicate" would definitely not describe my dolls' wardrobes...although a bit of froufrou is not out of the question in the future. I'll always avoid feathers, though - aside from the shedding, they tend to degrade and fall apart over time, and I'd be sad to see a favorite outfit disintegrate. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? LOL! To me they're just dolls, and don't have a very active sex life. (Although who knows, maybe at night they're climbing out of their boxes and running around a la Toy Story, having types of fun with each other that I don't even want to know about. :P) I can't imagine anyone asking me about that, but if they ever do, I will think it's funny, not personal! 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? My guys are all pretty macho looking, even the ones with longer hair, so no one has ever thought they were girls (not to my knowledge, anyway). I do think it's pretty silly when people get seriously miffed because someone mistakes their thoroughly effeminate boys or transgender dolls for the opposite sex, though. People aren't clairvoyant - announce up front when you post a picture of a doll like that, so that everyone can enjoy it and respond appropriately, without being made to feel foolish or embarrassed for having unintentionally offended you! 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? One of the things that I really like about BJDs is their realism, and the added detail of having them wear underwear just adds to that...in theory. I do own some frilly sets for the girls and boxers for the boys, but the truth is that they usually ruin the drape of the clothing - plus, underpants tend to ride up and get caught in the thigh joints. So while I'd like to say otherwise, for the most part my dolls go commando.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They're pretty sturdy, though a couple do need their stringing tightened. I've scratched a couple, and one seems hell bent of destroying every single left hand he has (he's got four pairs of hands total). 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Hands. Especially the ones with very widely splayed fingers. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? Not really? When I talk about my dolls to non-doll friends I tend to talk about their characters more than the actual mechanics of the dolls themselves. Heck, I've even roped in a couple of regular customers at work! 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Depends on the person and their own hobbies. Most of the time I'll be very honest about it. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? My own handmade wigs. They're all on hard caps and I don't really want to crush them. They have their own special boxes. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? Look I grab some of them by the tops of their heads sometimes. I can't be bothered with gloves, though I do make sure my hands are clean before I touch my guys, and I avoid their face ups and tattoos as much as possible. They live all over one table and in front of my bookshelf, and they do get some light, but most of it is very diffused, never direct. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Depends on the character. Most of my guys tend to get practical clothing that their characters would wear in real life. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Not at all. My crew is a diverse mix of genders and sexualities and I'm happy to talk about what makes each of them tick. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No, it's usually pretty funny when they think my bug buff (and naked) Viking is a pretty lady. He's a DollShe so his junk is MASSIVE. Makes me think of that time Thor got married to a giant... Sometimes people have asked if they have all the parts and I willingly show them. Cue them being horrified and me laughing my arse off. As a quick aside, from reading some of the other answers - while I'd never get annoyed at someone for misgendering my dolls, as a queer person, being misgendered HURTS. It's very rude. So to avoid offending someone, ask! It's the most simple thing to do! And this is relevant to dolls and people! 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Depends on the doll. Most of my guys wear boxers, though some are going commando because I cannot find anything big enough to fit their junk.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? So far all my dolls have been lucky! Only faceups have suffered damage so far. *knocking on allll the wood* 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Fingers, nose. I worry the most about those. If faceup counts (it sure is costly enough!) that in particular. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I keep fairly quiet about them. No one I have introduced them to reacts enthusiastically, that to me means they were trying to at least be polite. I’m grateful for that. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It depends on the asker, and how their views on finances are. A parent who is trying to meddle, I try to gracefully dodge the question. A friend asking, who isn’t asking to be judgy, then I tell the truth, and explain why they cost more than the common fashion doll if needed. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I wrap and worry over everything~ Wigs because of frizz and dust, clothes because of dust and wrinkles.. Also this one super tiny stringing tool I have because I keep losing it..! I want that thing back! 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I wear gloves for first-arrival, to inspect if there is damage or quality control that should be reported back to the seller. And while customizing (/ attempting..!) After that point, freshly well-washed hands are good enough. I worry a lot about damage and discoloration because so many of my favorite sculpts can not be replaced. They all get wrapped, packed into a box, and live in a dark space when not being actively enjoyed for the day. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I do~ very much so! I don’t own many super-delicates though. Most challenging in my collection is a miko style kimono that came as a fullset. It is gorgeously well-made, and I can only try my best to keep wrinkles out of it to preserve its clean lines and crisp creases. That said, I’d also love to dress all my dolls in sturdy overalls! 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? I don’t mind if people inquire, but for most characters, I wouldn’t have a good answer. Most of my dolls appear rather young so wouldn’t have developed much in the way of such preferences anyway. Sexuality is not really an issue in my life, so not something I’m skilled at considering for my characters. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Nah, I’m usually the culprit guessing wrong. It has been good practice in learning to address people/characters neutrally. When I do slip up I apologize and promise to try to do better next time. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? “Each doll having their own underwear” has been on my backburner a long time. I like them to have it, for modesty’s sake, because flops seem to happen a lot and that gets awkward if they go commando.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? For the most part, they're not terribly delicate, but I do have a couple with some beautiful, slender antlers that look like they could break if I look at them wrong, one with some very delicate resin wings, and one Doll Chateau ('nuff said). The rest tend to be reasonably solidly built overall, and I generally don't worry about tossing them in a bag with just a blanket or packing pillow around them to go off to a meet or convention. I've never done any damage to my dolls (fingers crossed I didn't just jinx myself), and they're definitely stronger than they seem, but I do still worry about those thin pieces on a few of them. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Fingers, hands down. Or any long, slim part similar to fingers on special dolls (antlers, feathers, Doll Chateaus...) 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I'm not shouting it from the rooftops or anything, but I'm not hiding it either. I'll be up front about it being a thing I do, and usually show a couple of pictures (often just from manufacturer sites) to clarify "Yes dolls, no not the ones you're thinking of." (Because BJDs are never the ones they're thinking of.) 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? I do my best to answer fairly tactfully, always with the explanation "These are hand-made artist dolls," which tends to make people more understanding. I'm always polite about it, and I generally don't lie (though I tend to round off a bit, I don't remember how much each one cost after all!), and will even give people more information if they seem legitimately interested after hearing the price. (Particularly to steer them away from bootlegs and toward dealers where they're more likely to find something they like.) 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? "Fullset" style outfits. I don't own any fullsets, but I have a handful of beautiful multi-piece outfits in a fullset style that I've picked up over the years, and with all the tiny pieces, often including chains or pendants that can snag on other parts, plus trying to keep those pieces together? And keep track of how to put them on the doll? Currently, I just keep them hanging out in plastic bags with all the pieces separated (and any pieces that might snag something else in smaller bags), with a laminated card showing a photo from the website of how it all goes together. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I'm not delicate at all! I'm not roughly tossing them around for the most part (they might disagree when I'm customizing or sewing for them ), but I also don't take a lot of the steps others seem to take. I do wash my hands, but gloves? No way, not unless I'm doing a faceup and need to keep finger oils away from the resin. Wrapped up in boxes? What's the point of them if I can't see them? I do keep them on a south wall (I live to the north so the sun is always in the south), but they're in glass cases with no covering over them whatsoever, and no one stays in a box. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Why not both? Some of mine do love delicate styles, while others look best in more utilitarian looks, which is great, because then I get to have a little of everything! 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Nah, though they're dolls so I would think it's weird if it's coming from outside the hobby. But I do have characters attached to most of them, and many of those characters do have a sexuality attached to them (several of my dolls represent couples/triads/etc). 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Not really; I understand that, at least in my culture, people's minds basically go "Doll -> Barbie, American Girl, Cabbage Patch Kid -> Girl" so even the most masculine doll (which is something I don't have at all in my collection) will default to "female" to the average person, regardless of what they're actually looking at. I don't generally have issues with anyone in the doll hobby, though, and just politely correct my stepmother (who collects Madame Alexander dolls--again, all girls) when she gets it wrong. Though in fairness, it also doesn't bother me when people misgender me personally, so that might have something to do with it. (And I've never shown off the parts to prove what a doll is, only if someone legitimately wants to see them.) 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Boxers for modesty when they're sitting around undressed for whatever reason (mods, new clothes in process, etc). The girls generally get tights or panties when they wear skirts for modesty, but otherwise, they don't fit properly (most of my collection is mini and smaller) so they go commando when fully dressed.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They're honestly pretty sturdy. ...However Calli (my ResinSoul Mei) does have a tiny dent/scratch on her nose from where she faceplanted onto cement once, from a standing position. It's only noticeable from just the right angle in good lighting, if you're really looking for it so I'm not bothered by it. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? I guess maybe the hands? ...Thankfully I've never really found any part to be delicate enough to break on my dolls. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I'm pretty open about my nerdy/niche interests in general, and dolls are no exception. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Not really. It's my money (usually money that I've gotten for birthday/Christmas) so I figure it's meant to be spent on fun stuff anyway. And since I only get maybe one doll every year or two it's not like I'm going crazy with buying them. No one has actually asked me though, I usually end up beating them to it in the process of explaining what the dolls are and how they differ from say, a barbie doll. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? For me, probably furniture since it can't be folded up and tucked some where. I don't have too many pieces for my dolls but they're about the most space consuming thing I have for them. Apart from the dolls themselves I don't really wrap up or protect anything. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? Not very. I do keep them wrapped up in thier boxes when I'm not doing something with them since my living situation doesn't give me the space to leave them setting out, and I try to be at least somewhat careful with them. But I got them to do stuff with, so they don't just sit tucked away in a dark room never getting played with either. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I'm fine with delicate items for my dolls if I come up with an idea for something that fits their character. I started a thing with Calli and Caspar of them having a necklace with a 'crystal' pendant that's the birthstone of the month that they arrived. I'm thinking that I might continue that in some form with my other dolls, though they might end up with accessories other than necklaces. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? I guess people can ask if they want. I'm not really bothered by it. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No. In fact Caspar has actually been perceived as a girl when I've shown people pictures of him when he's been dressed in something that isn't obviously masculine to the 'western' eye, like a kimono. Probably because he has long-ish hair. I haven't had to yet, but if I would have ever been asked to prove it, I probably would have.. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? It really depends on what they're wearing, since sometimes their undergarments don't fit as well under certain pieces of clothing. But I think probably all my dolls will end up with some sort of underwear eventually since I make/ will be making a lot of their other clothes anyway and very simple underwear isn't that hard.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? There are two broken fingers in my crew -- one of them broke during shipment to me, and I'm responsible for the other one (trying to fit a too-narrow sleeve over the hand, argh!) Otherwise, no, I've never broken or cracked or scratched any of them; they really are fairly tough creatures, the resins, though I also don't throw them around or leave them standing in precarious positions. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Either fingers or faceup -- it kind of depends on the individual doll. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? My one close friend from work is afraid of dolls, so they're a bit of a delicate topic with her, but otherwise my friends are mostly doll people themselves. Now, my other co-workers are a different matter -- in my current department, there's very little interaction outside of the work context, so except for occasional pet-related chitchat, I just don't talk about any part of my private life. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Yes, I think it can be a very delicate question, especially coming from people who don't have any collecting interests or context of their own, or maybe I've just been unlucky. I've developed a deflection response to the question -- a smile and "Too much!" is all I'll say these days. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Hmmm . . . probably jewelry, because tiny chains can get tangled up and tiny rings and earrings are easy to lose. Since I started using the clear plastic multi-compartment crafters' storage boxes, it's not nearly as much of a problem. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? In the early years, I kept my dolls in their boxes inside a dark closet, and only took them out when I was actively playing with them or photographing them or changing their clothes. Eventually that got to be a huge pain, and now they sit around the house on whatever flat surface is handy. Nope, I've never worn gloves, and I can't say that I worry about light exposure -- though I hardly ever take a doll outdoors, so they're never exposed to direct light. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I prefer more casual, everyday clothes, so my dolls don't have a lot of delicate finery. Some of them came with elaborate fullset costumes that wind up staying in those dolls' boxes, because I'm just not a fancy-display-doll kind of person. Right now, I'm wrestling with whether to change the wig, eyes, and outfit of an early Customhouse Unique girl who joined my crew recently. She's much more gussied-up than any of my other dolls and looks a little out of place with the rest of them, but I don't know, maybe she likes being the One Fancy Doll . . . 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? No; I just think questions like that are silly in relation to my crew. They're dolls. They don't have sexuality. Their characters might, I suppose, but I'm not really invested in my dolls' characters or any storyline(s) for them. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Uh, no. And no. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Sometimes, depending on the outfit. If they're likely to flash my housecleaners, I do try to put underwear on them.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I have dropped mine a couple of times and one fell off a table at a meet. He broke a magnet seat inside his head cap but I glued it back and it fits fine. I think they are quite fragile but I'm pretty much reconciled to them taking a clunker every now and then. I don't mind fixing them up when needed. They do tend to be rather strong, it takes a lot to actually break them. But I have giant SD's with good thick resin. I feel if I had smaller dolls the price for a fall would be greater. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Probably fingers and ears. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? Open with friends, guarded with strangers. I take Lyft to meets and just tell the drivers I'm going to a craft meet. Half truth. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Its not really delicate to me. I'll tell people hoe much they cost and they're usually stunned. My dolls are an investment to me and something I enjoy spending money on. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? My uber long stringing hook has been the hardest thing to store so far. Everything else fits nicely into the huge tub I have though it is getting full. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I don't wear gloves to handle them, but I am very careful about how much light they get. They stay out in my living room, it wouldn't be worth it to them to have them if they languished in boxes. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? As long at it fits the dolls character. Ashera can easily wear fine jewelry, Orsino fits well with delicate alchemy bottles and focusing crystals. Logan can were finer fabrics like silk and brocade, and Sir Thomas tinkers with all many of tiny gears and machinery. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? No. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No, never had to do that. No one in my crew is very androgynous. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? I make simple brief style underwear to avoid staining.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They are stronger than they seem. I have had a few accidents over the years, but way less than you would think and they were all quite minor and fixable. Once I sanded a tan doll revealing a lighter color underneath but now, years later, the color is the same as the surrounding area. I guess faceups and blushing are more delicate than resin. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Other than faceup and blushing, either hands or elf ears. I have yet to break any elf ears but I love elf dolls and I am always worried about their ears. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? Very open about it. People seem to think its a cool hobby, or at least my weird friends do. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? I don't usually like to tell people the actual price who are not in the hobby, but I have told some friends that are somewhat interested in it. If somebody I didn't know were to ask me I would probably just say, "a lot," or, "too much!" 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I keep trying to collect furniture for them for a possible future roombox and I would say that is the most annoying to store. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I definitely worry about how much sun and light they get but sometimes I'm more relaxed than other times. I never wear gloves when I handle them but I always wash my hands first! Sometimes I store them on shelves in dark closets but I don't like putting them away in their boxes for some reason. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I love to splurge on delicate doll shoes and clothes. Delicate doll jewelry is really cool too! 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Nah, but sometimes I haven't figured it out yet 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? I mostly have girl dolls and I think everyone always assumes dolls are girls anyway so it hasn't been much of an issue for me. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Only when they wear short skirts or dress!
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? II don't handle my dolls delicately. I think they're way tougher than we think. That said, I dropped one of my boys' calf while restringing and broke it at the knee. I was able to get a new one from the company. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? The cradle for the joints in the limbs 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I'm open about but I don't talk about them much outside the hobby. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It's only delicate if they're being negative about it. Genuine curiosity is ok 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I find the small items hardest to store in an organized way. I do wrap items that have small parts that may get damaged. Hands and some accessories need it most 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I'm probably a bad doll owner. I never wear gloves and I handle them a lot. I'm not overly careful about the sun. I make basic attempts to keep them from bright sunlight. I have their boxes in a closet. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I like both about equally. My dolls are all masculine boys so I don't get to do dress them in finery usually. Once in a while they go a little over the top but not much 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Not at all. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? I guess it would. As I said, my dolls are all masculine boys so nobody makes the mistake. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? No. They're all freeballers. They do wear boxers as lounge wear though. And the odd jock strap.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? Not. Most of my dolls are standard sizes without fantasy parts, so I don't have to worry too much. The first time one of my dolls took some damage (falling during a photo shoot), I held him and cried until I was almost sick. Now, I just kind of shrug it off. I'm not rough with my dolls and I try not to damage them, but I'm a very hands on owner, and I couldn't enjoy a doll that I was too scared to handle. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Usually fantasy parts, but sometimes a delicate wig or accessory. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I'm very open about it. I have friends in other similar hobbies (1/6 figures, action figures, art, etc), so most of them get it. Honestly, I'm too old to be bothered by what others think. If they want to bully me for enjoying a harmless hobby, I don't really think I want to waste time on them anyway. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It depends on how they ask. If they're interested in the hobby and want an idea of what to expect, no problem. If they're asking to judge me for it, or I feel like maybe they're considering trying to steal from me, it's awkward and I just kind of laugh it off with a very very vague answer. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I don't like owning really delicate things out of fear of damaging them, but I do have a few pieces of clothing hanging in the closet to prevent wrinkling or mashing them. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I handle them pretty much as I would any other doll. No gloves, no storing in boxes, no display cases. They sit in their shelf dioramas and get handled regularly. The room is mostly dust free though, and I have curtains and blinds to block the sun, plus it's a south-facing window so there's never direct sunlight on them. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Nooooooo on the delicate stuff! I play with my dolls too much for delicate things to be reasonable. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Nah, not really. Most of my dolls are teen characters who have no sex life and some are still unsure of their orientation or interests. As for the adults, Lakin is a single straight man more interested in exploring than dating, Parker has a boyfriend and a wandering eye, and Amir is a married gay man...The anthros have no love interests. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Doesn't bother me, if they're respectful about it. Getting it wrong on first glance is totally understandable. Getting it wrong after I've corrected you 30 times is kinda rude. I prefer not to strip my dolls as "proof", but once an old coworker asked how I knew my doll was a guy and if he had "a thing". Weird. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? The anthros don't wear underwear. They're so tiny that underwear would look entirely too bulky, and being a cat and mouse, it really isn't necessary. The humans do wear underwear most of the time, style depends on the character, except Cian seems to have been visited by the Underpants Gnomes. I swear he had some boxers, but I can't find them in his room or anywhere else...
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They're both. My poor SDC Miko has had fingers and his heel break multiple times. Yet the most delicate one, my DC Ada, just seems to bounce whenever she falls. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Holy frick frack their fingers. And their noses. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? Oh good lord, I have a doll of some kind with me every day at work. People even ask when I don't have my usual off topic one with me. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? I'm honest and tell them they're expensive. My BJDs don't get to go out all that often any more though so the question doesn't come up anymore. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Honestly? Face shields. I got most other stuff down, but those face shields man... you look at them wrong and they crumple. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? Out of direct light, no gloves (Need to do that though) ...My poor boys are naked.... 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Both. Sturdy furniture, and gimme pretty lacy things. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? The majority of mine are kids, so it doesn't come up. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No and No. One of my boys actually has the most shapely hips out of all my dolls, so if they were mistaken for girls (or the girls for boys) I wouldn't get my panties in a bunch 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? When they have them, they wear them. I get a little weird when people try to look under pants and skirts.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Not as delicate as a lot of people make out. I carry them about in a regular bag with my other stuff, just maing sure the face is wrapped to protect the faceup, I handle them a lot. I take them out and about. Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Yes, a finger broke off one of my Petite Ai's when she fell off a statue (photo' opportunity) onto a cobbled street at a doll meet. I replaced her hand. The point is, she fell from about five feet up onto stones, and the only damage was a snapped finger. Another doll has suffered several snapped fingers - they are particularly slender fingers and seem prone to snapping on this particular doll, none of my others suffer the same problem. Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? Absolutely 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Faceup. It's only protected by a spray on sealant so is the most easily damaged part of the doll. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? Delicate topic? Do you mean is it kep secret form some of my friends? No, everyone knows I have dolls - I take them all over, tehy go to work with me, to visit friends, and to all sorts of events. One friend will no longer come to the hous eto visit becauseshe's phobic about dolls and my house is full of dolls of all sorts, but that's about the extent of any problems. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? No, they cost what they cost. I don't see any point in making an issue of it. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Bows and arrows. The arrows are mostly OK, in their quiver, but the bows need a dedicated storage space to ensure they don't get snapped. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Not very. One spent a fortnight with a firend's toddler with no damage other than a messy wig (which combed out just fine) Do you wear gloves? No. Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Of course not - I've spoent a lot of money on these dolls, wi wouldn't waste it by keeping them hidden away in boxes. I don't keep the boxes, they'd just take up space that could be used for something else. Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? Yes. Most of them live on open shelves and in a glass-fronted cabinet in our livingroom. The shelves are in an alcove in the corner farthest from the window that the sun would only reach when it is low in the sky in winter. The cabinet is closer to the window, and recently there has been a successful takover bid of some shelf space in an alcove right by the window, but we have louvred shutters that can be angled upward so light gets in but is deflected up to the ceiling rather than shining on the dolls. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Both, depends on the doll and their character. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? No. But it's not much of an issue when the majority of your dolls are children. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Not really, non-doll people tend to assume all dolls are girls. Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No, just to prove they have them. Besides, some of my girls are on modded "boy" bodies because it's easier to sand off a penis to get a flat chested girl-child body, than it is to sand off boobs (and male bodies don't have the narrow-wiast-shapely-hips issues of female bodies to contend with either). 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? They do wear underwear but very few of my dolls dress modern enough for boxers Vs briefs to be an issue (it would be briefs because boxers are difficult to fit neatly into tight-fitting trousers at such a small scale) Teddy
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? Never broken any part(s), scratched (not outside of normal handling, so they might have some very slight scratches not really visible to the eye unless you really scrutinise) or had them crack. Only mishap was when my cat knocked some of them down and one got a knock to the nose, wasn't anything major and a bit of sanding paper took care of that. They're indeed more sturdy that you'd think when you get your first, they aren't made of glass or break if you pose them around or change their clothing. That said, some dolls might be more delicate, thin resin parts, which will make them more prone to damages/breakage if you aren't a bit more careful than usual. Only time I treat dolls like they're made of crystal glass is when it is someone else's. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Hands and elf ears 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? It's not the first thing I bring up, I can say that much. I'm lucky that some of my family are genuinely interested in what I'm doing with them from time to time, else I simply keep them to myself and those I know are in the hobby themselves. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Not at all, I also take the opportunity to tell those people exactly why they are so costly and that they aren't comparable to a $20 barbie. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I haven't had any trouble in that regard, I will find boxes to store everything in that isn't currently in use and can't just be crammed into a box with a hundred different other bits and bobs. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? Only time I wear gloves around them is when I paint their faces. I've never kept them hidden away in their boxes, always had them on display someway or other, though always kept away from direct sun/light. Only time I had the sun wreck havoc was last summer, drapes were drawn shut, but still the sun managed to "burn" a few feet and had one whole doll unevenly yellowed. Still so bummed out about it to this day. Made me install sun film on the windows in their room to avoid it in the future. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Love such things! Have made quite a few myself, I love the dainty aesthetic of it all. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Not at all. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Sort of bothered me when I was new in the hobby, but it's become no concern of mine. Most sculpts look androgynous and could go for being either. Also don't think people do so to be mean, it's when they start bickering about why you put a boy in a dress, or have a girl look way masculine that it starts getting on my nerves. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Most here are going commando xD Mostly because I find it annoying how they get stuck in the joints and it's nothing that bothers me.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? Well, Resin is delicate in itself, I experienced it myself when a piece of my "tough boy" 's arm broke when I moved it the wrong way. >< 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Delicate as in fragile, I'd say the fingers, since it's where we see damage happen most of the time. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I'm super open with my doll love even if my non-doll friends don't really care to go beyond the " oh your dolls are pretty" subject. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? They will ask and I answer frankly despite knowing they'll look at me disapprovingly for spending my money where they wouldn't. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Doll props are difficult to store, like clothes armor and furniture. I usually make them out of foam, so I need to be careful about it. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? It depends on the doll. As long as it's not sealed, I will be careful not to touch the resin with my fingers. Some will stay in boxes from lack of space, but I always have a few sitting on my desk, protected from direct sunlight. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I like both, it depends on the character I want to shell. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? It's not. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? It does not and what it's my doll's trouser is none of their business 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Most dolls goes commando! I do have a very delicate lace underwear for my precious catish doll though...
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I've never broken or cracked anything. I occasionally have found tiny scratches here and there but nothing major. They are definitely stronger than they seem! 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? The hands and maybe the nose. I've heard of people accidentally damaging noses! 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? If they ask about my hobbies i will mention them otherwise i don't really bring it up. Not out of embarrassment or anything i just don't talk about myself much 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It's not delicate per se but i don't like to scare them with the price if they want to handle them. If they ask i usually just say "a lot." If they want a number, however, i will be specific. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Clothes! Mainly because they take up the most space. Wigs are the ones i try to wrap somehow, though. I don't want them to get messy 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? Lol i'm not super delicate with most of them. I'm a neck grabber when i pick them up. The most i'll do is wash my hands if i've recently eaten but i won't go as far as wearing gloves. I basically manhandle them when dressing. They sit on shelves when i'm not playing with them. I have only a couple dolls i'm more gentle with because of fantasy parts and one is tiny so her resin is thinner and therefore probably easier to break. I do however keep them out of sun as much as possible 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I don't normally think about material usually. It just depends on the doll's character. I do like lace and i have a couple that wear it but i don't really treat it any different 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Not really. If people ask i'll tell them but it's usually pretty clear anyway. A few of mine are "dating" so it's obvious 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Normally no. I understand a lot of my boys look feminine. I just correct them. It only bothers me if they keep doing it especially on purpose. I won't show their parts though, that seems too extra to prove a point. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Most of them have underwear. I get whichever i think is cute. They're usually briefs or boxer-briefs. Unfortunately they end up not even wearing them half the time though because they don't fit under a lot of pants! Especially leggings so.. Unless they have a skirt/dress they're most likely commando
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I do consider my dolls to be delicate, though luckily I haven't yet damaged any of my BJDs. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? I think their fingers. Whenever I am putting a sweater or something on them, I am afraid their fingers are going to get caught and break off. DX 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I am VERY open about my doll-love. I share photos of them on social media, and I have no problems talking to my friends about them. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? I mean, I guess it could be considered a delicate question, but I think most people ask out of curiosity more than anything. I'm never really offended when anyone asks me. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I think wigs are difficult to store because you have to worry about them getting tangled. I try to protect my dolly items the best that I can, lol. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I do handle my dolls quite delicately. I don't usually wear gloves (though I have), I just usually wash my hands really thoroughly before handling them. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I usually like things that are a little more sturdy because I know how upset I'd be if I ended up damaging something. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? A little bit. But then again, I really don't think about my dolls' sexuality too much, so I'm probably the wrong person to answer, lol. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? My boy doll does look a little feminine, so it doesn't bother me too much, but I've had people make comments that were downright mean, and that does bother me. I have never actually shown off his parts, but I have informed people that he is anatomically male and OFFERED to show them, but usually they back down at that point, lol. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? I only have 2 dolls right now. My boy goes commando because he's always wearing pants, so I figure it doesn't really matter. My girl is always wearing skirts, so I did bother to buy underwear for her. XD
Ooh i love questionnaires! I only have 1 doll so these answers are really specific lol 1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? When i got my doll i was actually surprised at how strong/nice the resin felt (i had never handled a bjd before) but the tiniest and thinnest bits of her definitely looked chippable. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? For mine i'd guess the edges around the inside of her wrist joints. The little bar that the hook holds on to is sooooo tiny! 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I'm lucky that my family and friends have always been really supportive of my creative endeavors. I still feel a little nervous when im gushing about my interests, even though i know that everyone is ok with it. Hooray for generalized anxiety disorder! 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Nah, i dont mind telling people. Their shock and subsequent "well I would never spend that much on a DOLL" is mildly annoying at worst. I just move on to say they are very well made by artists n stuff and they go "ohh i see, yes she is very pretty wow" and thats that 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? The thing i am most careful with is the doll itsself, everything else is fine to just toss in a bin lol. I have a tiny little divider case where all her accessories/eyes/etc live. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I'll wash my hands before i hold my doll if i was just eating or doing a messy thing. I don't really take her outside too much and we live in a dark basement so i dont really fuss about light either. I store her inside her dollhouse (the front wall is removable so when its closed up its dark and dustproof inside) usually laying in her little bed. I am pretty nervous about staining, so she usually gets put away naked (but i just got her some white undies that i dont mind leaving on her) 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? My doll's style is all streetwear and comfy stuff, so she is not big on lace and embellishments at all. She likes a good knit and cool sneakers or boots. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Shes bi with a heavy preference towards women, same as moi (i think sexuality is up there with name/age/gender in terms of character creation, so i actually think its a pretty important facet of my characters personas/lives!) 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Not really outside of someone continually and intentionally misgendering her. i don't think showing her naked would prove anything - if she had a bepis she'd still be a girl. It's my doll and my character, anyone who would try to argue that my doll isn't what i want it to be is... Not worth engaging with, i think. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Not under clothes - at 1/8 scale fabric layers get bulky fast. She wears undies whenever she isnt in an outfit tho. This was fun! Im gonna enjoy reading thru these : p
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They're actually quite sturdy, I think. I used to be terrified about them breaking, but all these years of subjecting them to my klutziness and none of them have incurred any permanent damage. They might have scuffs and stains, but it's all surface level. The most damage I've done to the doll itself is a little dent on the nose my Qinzhe got from taking a spill, but I was able to get it fixed by a customizer. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? The fingers probably, though I've never broken any. I do take greater care when handling my dolls' hands, though. I don't know if they count as an actual part of the doll, but I definitely think faceups are the most delicate, especially since I can't do them myself. I have scratched faceups before and it's always devastated me. I'm very paranoid about protecting them now. I see people just grab the doll's face with their hand to move the head but I would never have the nerves to do it. It's by the ears for me (or the back of the head, if they have blushing on their ears). 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I don't discuss them with non-doll people, except for my closest family. I already don't like talking about myself and having to explain this unusual hobby just sounds like a pain. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? I do think so. I never bring it up, just brush it off with a "They're expensive" if asked. My parents know and don't approve, but I don't live with them and how I spend my money is my business. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I'm quite careless with blank floating heads, but floating heads with faceups are a different story. I keep them in their original boxes with lots of padding and make sure to never so much as bump the boxes. But like I said, I'm just paranoid about faceups in general. I also find the boxes a massive pain. I like to keep them, but I don't have much room. They're more difficult to find space for than the dolls, tbh. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I'm not terribly delicate, nor am I careless. I tried gloves, but I found them too cumbersome, so it's washed bare hands for me. I don't keep them in their boxes because being able to play with them at all times is part of the appeal. I used to be paranoid about yellowing, but now I'm much more blase. The ones who I do worry about yellowing, I keep inside my closet while the others are sitting out (but draped in a sheet when I'm not playing with them). All of them have stains but I truly dgaf, it's not like they go around showing much skin in the first place. If the stains bother me, I'll just clean them off, I'm just too lazy to do it. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Oh I am all about the delicate clothes and accessories. While I don't fret too much about my dolls, their stuff is an exception. XD I love long robes, clothes with lots of detail and embroidery, fancy jewelry, fussy little props, fancily styled wigs. They may give me a lot of pain to deal with, but I just have to accept it as the price to pay for the delicate aesthetic I love. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Not really. All my dolls are characters, and all of them have some kind of sexuality (I mean, considering a lot of what I write is erotica, that's a given...). Most are some form of gay or bi. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? It doesn't bother me. It has happened before, but mostly for male dolls who I intentionally style very androgynous or feminine, so I find it understandable. No one's mistaken them IRL (but I only show them to other doll people), and funnily enough, no one has ever misgendered the one actual crossdresser. I'm going to get a girl who dresses like a boy soon and I'm kind of curious to see if people will mistaken her gender too. XD 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Nope, they don't. It just seems unnecessary when most of my dolls wear long robes or pants, and will even get in the way (getting caught in thigh joints and stuff). I only put underwear on the ones who have shorter tunics and might have a real danger of flashing.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They're definetly stronger than they seem, or maybe I'm just lucky? I've dropped a couple of heads and headplates, but only had some minor scratches so far. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Definetly the hands and wrists. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? Since I don't have many doll-friends, I do talk about dolls to my non-doll friends, but it's not something that comes up often. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It definetly is. I never mention their true prices to outsiders, except for a handful of people, when they asked me how much I'm planning to charge for the dolls I'm sculpting. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Wigs! No matter what I do, they still look pretty messed up after I take them out. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I love handling my dolls and playing around with them, so no gloves! But I make sure to never expose them to sunlight and keep each and every one of them wrapped on satin-silky-like scarves, when they're not outside (only three of them have their original boxes). 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I mostly have sturdier outfits for them, since I sew them myself and haven't learned to sew with more delicate fabrics. I wish I could though! 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? These questions don't bother me, but I haven't put too much thought into their individual sexualities. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Nah, people will always assume they're all girls, so why bother? I'll just correct them if they're wrong, but won't get mad. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Yes! Undies for all!!! They look so cute in their underwear!
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They're stronger than they seem. Earlier this year, half of my collection fell when a shelf fell, and while two or three landed on a bed, the rest crashed to the floor. Out of the twenty dolls that fell, one had some dark scuffs on his face and two others had slightly damaged face-ups. The damage to the face-ups was pretty minor. It took me five minutes to fix one, and the other is waiting as I want to buy him a second head and do the face-ups to be close as identical as possible so it's best if I do them at the same time. I've also had a doll fall down metal stairs during a photoshoot and besides having his wig knocked off, he was fine. The only real damage I've ever done was the first day I had my first complete doll. I was taking photos and left him standing on a chair while I got up to close the window because a neighbor started smoking outside and I could smell it. I accidentally bumped the chair and the doll fell. The little lip inside his head that holds the faceplate on broke. Luckily, a silicon wig cap works well to both hold his face on and keep his wig in place. It was a crazy first day in the hobby! 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? The fingers. I had one arrive with a broken finger. I found it knocking around in the box and glued it back on. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I don't hide it, but I don't force people into a conversation topic about them either. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? I had it happen once. I was returning from a doll meet-up in the US and the Canadian Customs officer wanted to know. I answered honestly. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Wigs? They tend to tangle up, but I also don't want to give each one their own compartment as I do with eyes as they're a larger item. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I try to keep them out of the sun, but I don't wear gloves. I keep them out on display in a room that doesn't get direct sunlight coming in. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I have some feather wigs for a couple of the guys and a few lacy things for a couple of the girls. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? No. Though it does bother me when people assume their sexuality. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? It doesn't bother me. It might bother some of them if they were real, but they're not so... Part of it is probably that I don't care which pronouns are used for myself, so I don't see the point of making a big deal over a doll being misgendered. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Some of them do. The girls in dresses do, and a couple of the boys with jointed parts do just to make sure it stays in place.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I have broken and scratched them. Not sure about actual cracks....I don't think so, but who knows. I'm sure I've got dolls with scratches I don't even know about. I do think they're stronger than they seem. They would have to be, to survive me. I manhandle them a lot. my worst break was my first doll's hand. It was kind of heartbreaking, because he was my first (and he just broke a couple years ago so it's not like I wasn't used to things going wrong). I even had extra hands for him, so it's not like it wasn't fixable...but still sad. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Hands for sure. Other than a few specific Faceups (mostly on the modded ones) that's what I take care of the most, especially when traveling. Some of those long fingers just terrify me. Jointed hands are nice. They don't break as easily, they have plenty of give! 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? At this point, I am closer to my doll friends than my non-doll friends, but we don't even talk about BJDs all the time. I didn't talk about my dolls with my non-doll friends unless it came up for some reason. Since it doesn't interest them, it is a very one-sided conversation. Which isn't fun for anyone. I mean, I don't want to sit around and listen to their hobbies that don't interest me either. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? I answer vaguely. They don't need to know how much I spend on anything, dolls included (unless it was a sale and I'm excited to tell everyone so they can go sale too). But on the other hand I have disclosed a dollar amount on some of them before. Recently while discussing action figures with a coworker...just to put price points in perspective. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? WIGS omg And no which could be part of my problem. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I don't wear gloves or keep them wrapped up. I do try to keep them out of the sun. I have most of them in my room, and I have black-out curtains, just for them. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? NO I can't even handle long wigs XD I try not to make my BJDs too high-maintenance. I have used all those things on my dolls, but none of them get anything too delicate for all-purpose use. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? No. I mean, they don't care so why should I? XD 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Nope. I usually just go with it. It's not that big of a deal. I don't think I have. I mean, I've pulled down plenty of my dolls pants, but usually only for people who are curious about anatomically correct dolls, or other BJD owners because that happens a lot. But I'm not sure I've had to do to prove anything to anyone. For some of my boys that wouldn't prove anything anyway, so.... 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Anyone who wears a skirt or dress (usually) gets underwear. Sometimes the girls in tight dresses go commando to avoid panty-lines or because nothing will fit under the dress. One of my boys in jeans wears boxer briefs because he has containment issues. Other than that pants-wearers don't get underwear.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They are delicate, but also surprisingly strong. It depends. I managed to crack a wrist joint when restringing once, and I haven't touched a wrist restring since then. Granted I haven't really been in the hobby either, but I'm currently in the progress of restringing the same doll and I need to figure out what to do with that hand. I have a new pair of hands bought, but they're a lot newer and boy can you tell! I'll need to blush those like crazy! I also had a friend offer to make a mold out of the intact wrist part and cast it for me, we'll see! On the other hand I've had that same doll take a dive on the floor face first, and he only had a tiny smudge on his nose, so... it really depends. :''D 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Wrists, hahaha, see above. Also fingers in general. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I talk about them openly. If someone ridicules me about them they're not my friends, and so far I haven't had to drop any friendships because of this issue. I like to think my friends are my friends for a reason. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? I answer truthfully! The only people I have ever downplayed the exact amount with are my parents, who are generally ok with my dolls but I think we're all happier if they get the slightly rounded-down version. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? The bigger props/fragile props I think. I have a couple small, clay flower pots for my SD boy and they're annoying to find a place for. This will change when I finally plant something in them, but for the time being. His suitcase is another, it's pretty bulky and doesn't really fit too much stuff into it, but at least it serves some purpose. I'll make him a room box at some point, and I think things will get easier when that's done and I can just move that around. :'D 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I don't wear gloves, but I always wash my hands well before touching them. They're all sat on a little shelf in my (open) walk in closet, that spot doesn't get any sunlight so it's been perfect. Sadly it soon won't fit all of them and I'll have to figure out something else... 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Well, none of my dolls really have that kinda style. :'D I can only see two of them wearing any things listed in the question, even though I do like to dress at least one of them more daintily. I feel like it's not my preference here, but the dolls'. Most of their clothing etc are pretty sturdy at the moment, but I'm trying to branch out more! 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? It depends a whole lot on who's asking, and of what doll! I think that the only times I've ever been asked the question is when it's been relevant regarding their character/story, and in that context I'm totally fine with it. If that was one of the first things someone asked me about any of them, I probably wouldn't be comfortable answering. Especially if it was directed at my 1/6 dolls who're kids in my verse. D: 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? A bit, especially when I've tried to establish the pronouns in my text and people still get it wrong. I'm especially annoyed when it happens to my nonbinary doll, being an enby myself. The others haven't really gotten gendered wrong to my recollection. (It's also harder to know if someone irl here thinks they're the wrong gender, due to lack of gendered pronouns in my language.) I'd never show off their bits to anyone, unless it's on a more general "let me show you how BJDs work" kinda way. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Yes and no. xD I think only one of them has any sort of 'real' underwear at the moment, and that style doesn't suit him at all. I'd love for at least my SD to have some, and I'll probably be giving my MSD some too now that she's here and I feel she'll be wearing some short skirts when with me.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? Being that my two girls are my first dolls, I assumed they were delicate. Overtime, I realized they were not the little snowflakes I thought they were. They have went for a topple quite a few times (face first!), I've had a few mishaps when dressing them and having growing fingernails...all in all, no scratches, or cracks! My fiance even stepped on my BJD bag with them inside once, and they were fine. They are pretty tough! 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? I think the most delicate part of the doll (aside from the faceup) are wrists and ankles. It's my worse fear to split or crack the area where the wrist connects to the hand or ankle to the foot. When getting on shoes with socks sometimes, it can be a challenge. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I'm pretty open! A lot of my friends and acquaintances are interested in the topic and even more interested in WHY I collect such things. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Honestly, I feel like people asking me the cost of my dolls makes me, as an adult collector, more legitimized in their eyes. They see there is real value in my dolls and it's not a typical "child's toy" that I am investing my time in. I gain much respect, for some reason, when I tell people I have sold my doll collections before to pay for college books, in the past. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? For some reason, I have the most trouble storing dollie coats/sweaters. They take up a lot of space when stored flat layed, but too bulky when folded :-/ I keep my items in a truck layed flat (some things in their original plastic wrapping) when possible. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? My dolls are my babies! I handle them gingerly, but I still like the experience and feel..so I don't wear gloves. I am careful as to not touch the face to wear out any matte varnish. When not being played with, I like them to sit or stand on my dresser for display. The dresser is in front of a window, but I don't believe they get enough light exposure to worry about yellowing. (Plus, they are tan girls dolls, anyway). 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? The only delicate items I have for my dolls is a dress with some pearly bead buttons and a pair of boots with fine chains and charms on them. I don't normally seek fancy items with beadwork, out because I'm too accident prone. I much rather fun decorative printed cloth, tulle, and lace accents. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? YES! O_o but only because I haven't thought about it myself...until this very moment...when you asked this question LOL I have an idea of a backstory for my two girls, but I am starting to thing maybe it isn't fitting or original enough, so I am getting slightly discouraged. But, I do think my two girls will be heterosexual (for now). 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No, my girls are female and identify as such. However, in the future I am sure this may get more complicated as there are many boy sculpts with boy bodies, that I'd love as female characters. I wouldn't go as far as showing my doll nude just to prove it and I think it is SO rude when people want to disrobe a doll, just to see! 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Briefs! I love when dollies come with little bra and panty sets. One of my girls did not, but despite her sweet face, she is not shy one bit it seems Lol
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I feel like they are pretty sturdy. Gotten a few scratches over the years and 3 headcaps have gotten chips from falling off unexpectedly (shakes fist at weak magnets and weak magnet glue) but otherwise I have not had issues. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Probably their fingers? Or elf ears. I get SO worried about the ears of my two elves X,D 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I am open with my love of dolls but try to downplay when I am spending money on them X,D 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It can be very delicate. Especially when you are a less wealthy collector, so you have to really plan and budget for your dolls and their accessories. Non-doll people who know you are not well off can get a bit judgey about how you choose to spend your limited "play" funds. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I suppose wigs. I need a better setup than my current one so they stay nicer than they have been. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I dont bother with gloves but I wash my hands before handling them and try to be careful that I do not take them out too long on really hot days so my hands wont sweat when handling them. Currently mine are all stored in boxes between play sessions, though if I ever had a room I could block out the window on I would not mind getting a display cabinet. I wont let them be displayed until then though, because I do worry about sun exposure. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I like both, it just depends on the character really. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? No, unless the person asking is being weird about it. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? I have not had this happen with non-doll people yet, and doll people are used to it happening so they have just kinda gone 'oh, alright' when corrected. I have not needed to flash anyone yet XD 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? For settings where they are half dressed sure, but under clothes no. I do need to get some panties made to go under skirts when the girls are not wearing leggings though. The skirts I have are longer, but still feels a little mean of me to expose the girls like that XD
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I think for the most part they are tougher than you think. I remember getting my first bjd and thinking how she didn't feel like I was expecting (I'd never handled one before then) and I was quite happy about that. I've never broken or chipped anyone ^_^ 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Definitely the fingers, but also things like the bars for the s-hooks and eyelashes are also pretty delicate. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? Not really. If someone asks, I'll talk about my dolls, but I don't really bring the subject up much since it's a lot to explain to someone with no clue about bjds. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? One again, not really. I'm not super specific with prices unless someone asks because they're thinking of getting one. If it's someone who doesn't know anything about bjds, I just let them know that they're expensive, no matter what I paid for them. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Wigs and floating heads. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I don't wear gloves, but I do wash my hands when I'm going to handle my dolls. I try not to touch their faces too much, but other than that I'm not too paranoid. I do keep them in my bedroom which is darker anyway. I'll take them outside, but I won't leave them sitting in direct sunlight. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I like both. It's definitely easier to handle your dolls if they're wearing something sturdy as opposed to having to watch the outfit due to fragile parts, but I love the super intricate, lacy outfits! 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Nobody's ever really asked, but I don't think any relationship (or lack thereof) or sexuality should have to be seen as sensitive, but I do understand that's not always the case. I won't ask sexuality of a doll's character myself and will let the owner disclose that info if they want. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No. A lot of people automatically assume all dolls are female. My boys tend to look a little androgynous and my mom wishes I'd get some more "manly looking" boys, but that's it ^_^ 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? My girls wear a lot of skirts, so they have undies. My boys have them, too, but don't really wear them because they don't fit under their pants!
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I've never broken, scratched, etc...any doll but I'm naturally pretty graceful and dexterous so I don't really break or damage anything. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Probably the thinnest parts like fingers and ears. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? Nope, I'll volunteer that information to anyone who will listen lol 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? No, I don't care about it and will answer truthfully 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? For me it's clothing since I make most of it myself I tend to be careless with it and end up losing or throwing away a lot of it. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? No gloves or boxes but I keep them out of direct sunlight unless I'm doing a photo shoot. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Most of my dolls are boys and in a fantasy setting so they wear things like leather, linen, and faux fur 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Doesn't bother me, it's not something I really think about though 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Nope. It's understandable for a "normie" to think all of these dolls are female, by normal standards most of them are very feminine. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Boxer-briefs :P
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? We’ve had one face scuff (falling onto concrete during photo shoot), broken fingers in transit (glued and had extra hands just in case), and a Doll Chateau Ada break off an ear/horn with a fall from a table, but overall they’re way sturdier than they seem. Our Dark Elf Soo MNF actually drew blood on my wife with her ear once sooooo... 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Fingers, thin/older resin around joints. Small thin pieces in general. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? Not a delicate topic. If someone asks about my hobbies I’m totally honest. I’ve brought resin into work before and so has my wife, it’s no secret. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? I think it’s a little much. If people are asking to pry, I downplay it a lot. But we work artist alley at some conventions and sell doll clothes, so when someone’s asking because they’re curious and want know more or get one, then we’ll explain more honestly, with the addendum that layaway is absolutely the only way we’d afford this hobby. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Wigs are a pain, but honestly? Stands and furniture are the worst! 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? Like many it seems, I just tend to wash my hands if dealing with something messy prior. Most of the dolls live in their display cabinet in the basement with no natural light, but anyone who’s being worked on for mods/face/clothing just sits around upstairs. Blinds are usually drawn and even when they’re open, the curtains aren’t, so direct sunlight is minimal. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I love delicate things, but it really depends on the doll in question. I’ve made jewelry boxes for several of our girls just to help separate and contain their fiddly bits! 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Not really? Most of them are characters in our stories and in relationships with each other, so it doesn’t particularly bother me. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Again, not really. Mostly I just correct gently and they’re all ‘oh! Ok!’ And use proper pronouns after. Most of our boys have long hair so I get it. When it’s my wife’s feeple70 dude with short hair, pleather pants and bushy eyebrows, I’m just entertained. I don’t think we’ve ever flashed our dolls bits at anyone unless they were asking if they really were anatomically correct. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? If they’re wearing a skirt, we try. Character wise, yes, but that’s just one more layer to struggle with under pants so it’s just not worth it!
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? For the most part, I think resin is pretty strong. It can still get damaged though, which I learned while taking out some hot glued Volks eyes (my poor yosd Ryo has some scratches near his eyes due to this). I also had a Realpuki a while ago and his ear broke when he took a fall. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Elf ears, fantasy parts or fingers 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? No, pretty much everyone who knows me, knows that I collect dolls. Life long doll collector here 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? This question usually bothers me. I feel it can be rude sometimes to ask people how much they paid for something. Unless they are interested in saving up for a bjd, that's different. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Furniture. Big furniture takes up space, tiny furniture can be delicate. Bubble wrap and carefully placed in the closet. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I don't wear gloves to handle my dolls, but I did a curtain to my doll cabinet to help block them from too much sunlight. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I have a good mixture of delicate and sturdy props or clothing items for my Realpukis. Tiny things are easier to lose, squish or tear. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? I think it depends why someone is asking. I don't usually give my dolls huge background stories so the most I get asked is if my doll is a boy or a girl. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? It doesn't bother me. Usually people laugh that bjd are mostly anatomically correct. And yes, I'd undressed my dolls to show people who didn't believe me. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Usually none lol. It's hard to fit doll underwear under doll sized pants, usually looks bulky or the pants won't fit over the underwear. Underwear works better with dolls wearing skirts or dresses.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? Broken yes in international shipping when I returned from Japan the ankle hook in my Sabik broke and one of my Elf Shiwoo's fingers. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Fingers, elf ears.... 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? More open than I should be sometimes. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Avoid the cost question unless you are talking to someone in the hobby. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I have caboodles boxes for my props by category. After breaking all but one of my miniature bourbon snifters I made padded sleeves for the champagne glasses. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? My BJD live in their boxes on a dark closet shelf when I'm not playing with them. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Does tulle count? 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Nobody's ever asked me. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No it doesn't bother me and yeah I've had to show some folks the boy bits on my anime styled boys who look a bit too girly for some. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Lot of them go commando. The girls all have bloomers or panties when they are in dresses though. A couple boys have fine muslin boxers.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They haven’t had any ‘injuries’ but that’s always a worry! I’m most worried about my Souldoll. Hye is so tiny and light for an sd. My msd boy is so sturdy, probably the strongest. My two gems have delicate parts. I worry about them too! 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? The joints at their wrists for sure. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I am 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It depends on who’s asking! If they’re someone who loves a hobby or knows how to collect then we both understand each other. Maaayybe I don’t tell the exact price to everyone, haha. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Their supplies. I’m not very organized with the tools for them and I tend to store paint supplies everywhere in the house. At least their furniture and props are neater, oops 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I don’t wear gloves but I do wash my hands really thoroughly. If I’m washing them or restringing I wear them. They all stay in their pillows, and boxes, in my coolest room. It’s kept them from yellowing much! I didn’t know, I’d love them exactly the same if they were yellowed more. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? One of my girls has a lot of delicate things. She’s so femme! I like lace and frills for her sometimes, but also delicate modern dresses and skirts. Everyone else wears tomboy casual~ 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? As in preference? No, it’s fine! 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? It would never bother me. ^ . ^ I correct them but I don’t show their bits! Humans don’t go around showing so why should my dollies?? Ha, I think I’m just protective of the resin kids. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Yes I think boxers and undies are totally adorable even though they’re hidden. I haven’t gotten bras but that would be cute too! Thank you making this thread. It’s fun reading all the differences
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? Most are more sturdy than they seem. I've had a few scratched faceups, hairline fractures, and a broken foot that I was able to fix but nothing that wasn't impossible to repair as age/tension caused issues. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? On human dolls, the fingers. For fantasy, any doll that has thin elf ears or details that stick out. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I've always been very open about it. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It depends on the situation. I don't like telling people an exact price out in public where a lot of people can hear but I also have no issue being honest to inform people before they make a choice in the hobby. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I'd say for me, furniture props and shoes. I live in a very humid place and no matter what I do, I suffer shoe damage be it peeling fabric or the shoe shrinking around their feet. I do also bubblewrap any resin props for storage. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I am very gentle with my boys, though I do not wear gloves. When not being handled, they are always wrapped up and placed back inside their boxes to avoid additional sunlight. I worry a little but not enough to never handle them. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Oh very much so! Delicate and intricate outfits are my doll aesthetic so I tend to buy outfits with tons of tiny details and pieces sticking out. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Not really though there is a time and place for such questions. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Nope. I just politely correct them and no. Pulling down their pants is annoying since I have to put them back on after haha 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? They only wear underwear for underwear/morning shoots. A lot of my dolls have too tight clothes to fit extra layers but when they do, it's boxers.
Oooh yay Question time! 1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? A: My dolls have proven to be rather sturdy - even my smaller girls (Iplehouse FIDs) 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? A: Like others have said, hands. My Zenith Vasilla's fingers, even though she is larger than the FIDs, are so dainty and spread apart that I'm always cautious of how I pose them in case they hit something or get caught on fabric, etc. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? A: I am very open about doll collecting with anyone who will care to listen. I've reached a time in my life where I just don't care about peoples negative opinions anymore. Almost always though my passion for dolls is enough to convince non-doll owners that it's a cool hobby and I really don't cop any negativity anymore. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? A: It's a little awkward because some people think it's a very immature thing to do, buying expensive 'toys'. But I'm still living at home, studying at university, and have no intention of buying a house, etc. Most people I talk to know they are expensive but I tend to change the topic to avoid telling them any specific figures. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? A: Wigs and glasses. Wigs often go in hair nets because I HATE tangled and matted wigs. And glasses just need to handled carefully so I don't break hinges. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? A: I wore gloves at first, was pedantic about washing hands, but now I just make sure I don't have any paint or cat hair on my hands when touching them. Obviously I still avoid their faces at all cost. My girls also love the outdoors so mild sun exposure is fine by me. Other than that they stay in a full glass cabinet where I can admire them. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? A: My girls mostly wear casual stuff so delicate things don't always suit their looks, but occasionally they will wear little necklaces, glasses, lace or whatever. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? A: Not really because it's not a particularly sensitive subject for myself personally. As a heterosexual female, my girls reflect this also, not because they all have to be just like me, but because I'm too lazy to make deeper, more articulate personalities for them! 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? A: This isn't an issue for me as my girls are all very obviously feminine. I myself however, have been referred to as a boy before but I don't care about other peoples opinions. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? A: Sometimes. If they are using a saddle stand it helps reduce scratching in the crotch area, or if their clothes are made of a thin fabric, but mostly no. It adds too much bulk under their clothes.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They are pretty tough, but I've accidentally scratched my boy's foot and scuffed his face. Now that I think about it, he's the only one that's had more than a faceup chipped. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? The hands, especially my big girl's. The are so long and thin, packing her up always makes me nervous. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I've shown a picture of a single head to me sister once, and made wigs in front of them. And I've talked about "art collectables". But they have never seen my collection and don't really know about it. Maybe I will show them when I've settled down with a stable place, but for now, I'd rather not. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? I think it is a delicate question, which is why I don't really talk about it much, and then, only to collectors. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Wigs. They tangle and get lint and it's a bit annoying. Sometimes I bag them to avoid them shedding on catching on zippers. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I mostly keep them in closets or suitcases when not actively using them to avoid sun. I mostly only take my tiny outdoors, but that is less for protection and more because my SDs are so honking huge. I don't wear gloves, I just wash my hands if I've eaten recently it they're dirty. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I prefer more sturdy stuff. It's the same with my things. I want them to last so I don't have to replace them all the time. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Nah. I'm a writer, and I like talking about my dolls' characters same as with my other characters. That being said, sexuality plays little part in their stories. So far, none of them have any SOs or even date. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No. They are very androgynous. I'd be impressed if people got it right every time. Whether I correct them depends on my mood at the time. The only time I would pull their pants down would be if they did me not take me at face value. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Only one of my dolls has underwear (boxers) and he rarely wears them. Clothes just got better without them
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? Man, I could probably knock somebody out with at least three of the big guys thigh parts. Asa in particular is a c h o n k. The tinies are obviously less solid then the SDs but still, they're fine so far. Salem has a little crack in his torso but honestly at this point i can't remember if he came to me like that or not, and it is very small. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? H A N D S, although Nobuyuki's scales, Mori's petals, and Crow+Hiro's elf ears are up there. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? Sort of? Most of my long-term friends know I have them, but they genuinely weird at least one of them out so I don't tend to talk about it. Other friends I've made through an equally expensive and kind-of-weird niche hobby (listen don't knock hitting people with foam sticks in the woods until you've tried it), so I don't think any of them are in any position to judge if it ever comes up. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It's a don't ask, don't tell thing. My finances aren't anybody else's business unless I have problems meeting other obligations, in which case my roommate is legally allowed to smack me upside the head with a drain pipe. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Boxes. I can't just...get rid of them, I've done the "sell a doll you don't have the box for anymore" thing and it's....not fun. I try to keep fullset outfits in their own bags so I don't lose pieces, and wigs in at least a net so they don't completely turn into a rat's nest. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? The most they get is "i'll wash my hands first". I have to constantly remind myself not to adjust heads by the face, oof, They're stored in a big padded box (or...two...and some carriers....i refuse to admit how many i actually own thank you good night) out of the sun, though I'd like to have an actual display space for them someday. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Both tbh. Tiny buckles and HECKING LACING are gonna be the death of me. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? It's more just...weird? Because that would relate to the characters the dolls embody and tbh nobody but me cares about them |D; 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Honestly, not really? Might've had to do it for my parents at one point, but by now they've just stopped questioning any of the weird stuff I do. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Only Suvi at the moment, who is in a skirt. Largely because most of the others are in either leggings or tight jeans and also i am very lazy.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They're probably stronger than I think they are, but I've been known to put that to test while trying to pose them! ^^' 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Probably eyelids, I like dreamy/sleepy dolls with heavy eyelids and the resin tends to be quite thin there. Fingers too- for hands that have fingers in poses that are spaced out! 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I'd like to think my friends are quite supportive! They're probably tired of hearing about my dolls so I try to make separate social media accounts so I can enjoy the hobby with other people who are interested and not bother my non-doll-friends too much. There are times when I just can't stop thinking/talking about them though haha. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Only if its my parents asking! I get lectured if I buy too many things that aren't necessities They know that they're expensive but mean a lot to me. My parents are quite supportive of my hobby actually! They refer to my dolls as my babies (their grandchildren) sometimes and its very cute. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? First and foremost are boxes.. I love keeping them but ahh what am I going to do about the dolls I have coming in? Where am I going to put their boxes?! (dread..) Wig storage takes up a lot of space too - I keep them in their original packaging, and floating heads. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I used to be quite delicate with them, afraid of posing them, removing their heads/being rough! I used to wipe the bodies down a few times a month but now not so much. I mostly just wash my hands before handling them, I'm still nervous about posing them but there are times when I can't be gentle (stringing, pulling on tight clothes/wigs) I do worry about light - try to finish photoshoots quickly and store them in a cabinet- the glass door has an wooden insert to hide whats inside so I can choose to remove it if I want to see them! Some go in a glass detolf but the side facing the windows has a wooden board blocking it and my curtains are usually not open. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I love dainty and delicate things, jewelry and fine fabrics- especially. I feel like having small fragile accessories are part of the charm of collecting dolls but I would like for the things I have to be sturdy since I believe I can be accident prone. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Not at all! I don't go out of my way to share, but I'm super happy if people are interested enough to ask me anything about my dolls/characters! 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? It doesn't bother me, a lot of times its not coming from a place of spite. I generally let it happen since I'm really awkward with correcting people (my name gets misheard very often) but if I do say anything, I try to be casual/un-accusing about it i.e. Comment: "She's so cute!" Reply: "Thanks! I'm proud of how his pictures turned out!" 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? If they can fit into them! In general: if my girls are wearing skirts I'll put them in undies. But for pants/shorts/bottoms and bras- I really don't like seeing seams under clothing, especially since most of the bottoms I buy are quite fitted and can't fit over undergarments (tailored pants, leggings, skinny jeans) - so they'll go commando. ^^'
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? Definitely stronger than they seem! Resin as a material is somewhat delicate, but it's nothing compared to porcelain. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Depends. Fingers are the most delicate part of the sculpt, especially on smaller dolls. But it's always the faceup - specifically the eyelashes! - I find myself worrying about. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? It's definitely my strangest hobby by most people's standards. But my friends are used to thinking of me as an eccentric sort of person, so I don't think the dolls are entirely unexpected. Not really a delicate topic, lol. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? That is indeed a delicate question, but I don't like talking about finances in general. Luckily, no one has ever asked me anything specific. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Small props and patent leather shoes are my biggest bugaboos. And eyes that don't come with boxes! Gah! I made a little foam tray for all my runabout eyes. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I worry about sun in a general sense, but that's about it. My house is a cave when it comes to natural light. I myself have a photo allergy (no joke - I break out in terrible hives if I'm exposed to UV light for very long) and a family history of skin cancer, so I avoid the Great Flaming Life Orb like the plague anyway. I make sure my hands are washed before I handle my dolls, but I don't wear gloves. And I don't keep them in a cabinet or under glass or in a box. I only have the two, so they just hang around the house with me. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Well, the coming-home outfit I made for my second doll involved a chiffon shirt and bobbin lace, so... 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? I don't know. I think...I think sometimes those kinds of questions can stray into the topic of whether or not dolls are "alive," which gets sticky fast...But if we're just talking about characters, then no. I don't find it too personal or delicate a question. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Both of my dolls are feminine-looking boys, but I've never had anyone mistake their sex. Hilariously, I mistook Oliver for a girl the first time I saw him in a picture. (I bought him secondhand on the Marketplace, and the seller didn't mention the gender in the OP.) That said, if someone did mistake either of them for a girl, it wouldn't bother me. I'm not the sort to correct them, either. I'd probably just mention the dolls' name (Lucan and Oliver, both distinctly boys' names) and let them correct themselves. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Not if they're wearing pants! Skirt outfits or robes would get undies, but I see no reason to bother with an outfit that has pants. There's no e.coli or sweat to worry about, which is pretty much the entire point of underpants, lol.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? They might have gotten a few scratches, bur other than that they seem sturdier than expected. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Fingers and faceup 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I'm not really hiding it, but I usually don't bring it up with whoever. From my experience most people don't get it x) 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It is a delicate question, but I still tell people if they ask. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Wigs and accessories. Also it's difficult finding enough space for everything! 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I like having them easily accessible so I have them on a shelf, but away from the windows. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I love lace! And pretty details are also nice, but in such small sizes I guess everything is delicate. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? No one ever asked x) 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Not really. I originally bought my first one to be used as both, hehe. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? My dolls wear neither, unless it's visible beneath their other clothes
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? 15 years (about) and nearly 100 dolls-- only thing that has broken was a tiny finger (mature tiny--so long skinny fingers!) during shipping to me. Oh, and a chip at a hip-joint from a second-hand seller of a large doll, but chip was on inside of joint and doesn't show or even really weaken the doll's joint. I've been super-lucky! I did have a 1/3 girl face-plant in grass--and that left a tiny scratch in her blushing! I've also had lots of wear on blushing at joints--but that's sort of a given... 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Faceup/blushing and fingers... I'd guess I'd worry about longer pointy elf ears, but mine are mostly of the small pointy variety. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I'm open if it comes up naturally. I try not to bore people who aren't into dolls with all that! 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It's usually none of their business--but I do warn people who are attracted to my dolls but know little about them that they are pretty expensive. With doll-folks, I'll talk prices with no problem. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Tiny props and jewelry. And big 1/3 props! --Not necessarily wrapped up, but just hard to store. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I wish I were good about washing hands and wearing gloves, but no. I try to wrap up extra heads. I do try and keep them all away from direct light and florescent light. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I do like feathers--but they can shed a lot as they age. I just had to wash some fine, shredded fabric on an item because of staining--and that didn't go well, but what can you do? Lace is lovely!!! Crystals--had some of them on a default faceup and they popped off over time. So, sturdy is a bit preferred, but I wouldn't rule out all the delicate stuff! 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Depends on the context--but it doesn't bother me in general. I'm rarely asked, though! 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No. I don't care, although I'll correct them at times. Ages ago my poor more big-headed boy was pantsed to show that bjds were anatomically correct. *sigh* 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? My boys would... but often their pants are too tight for underwear. They'd probably prefer boxers, but they get whatever works with their clothes! My girls usually wear panties under dresses and skirts (if I have them!--and I do try to have them).
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? It might horrify quite a few, but I've dropped mine many times. They've toppled off tables or decided that they weren't going to use the stand. They've not broken anything, nor have gotten scratched. Stringing them and accidentally slingshotting parts across the house, never resulted in breaks or scratches either. My heart on the other hand.... I'm getting too old for these Dolly Shock heart attacks...I may have to start an aspirin regimen soon... 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Everyone says the fingers or fantasy parts like ears, horns, etc. I've not experienced broken fingers, despite all the mishaps in about 10 years of the hobby. I think it's the faceup! If I look at it wrong, it'll scratch. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I'm totally open, at work, with friends, strangers, and I even take one to photography days at a local historical building. For example, at work I will talk about collecting bjd when women (or men)come in to sew clothes for dolls. Or help their child/ggrandchild learn to sew for a doll. I volunteer as an actor for Preston Castle, and I bring my Ringdoll Frankenstein to take photos there. (He turned out to be a big hit, btw.) Some friends who aren't into the hobby/don't know about it, ask to see my collection. My guildmates in my Viking guild want me to make Viking themed clothing for my dolls. I think it just depends on the situation. I don't talk about dolls if I feel uncomfortable, or unsure. But if it comes up, I will talk about it. And a lot more if an interest is expressed. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? It depends on the person/situation. I have no problem discussing cost. Most of my friends are artists, or into expensive hobbies. (Like living history reenactment) They recognize hand crafted items, and already know the dolls are pretty spendy. They don't really bat an eye at the price, because they spend the same amount or more on handcrafted goods or tools for their crafting. People who don't know about the hobby seem to know that what I have is expensive. They sometimes assume it's porcelain, until they get a closer look. But them thinking about porcelain dolls or handcrafted dolls in general, set the idea of cost. They tend to go "WHOA". And immediately stop touching or holding the doll. But I've never had a bad experience. Most people will comment that their phone, or brand sunglasses or something else they splurged on is just as expensive. (And sometimes add, "And not nearly as exciting") Again, I think it's based on the situation. I'm also mid 30s, and most people I know are around/in that age bracket. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? All of it! I have a very small room. Most of it is either books, crafting stuff, and bjd. I try to keep things wrapped and packed nicely, as stuff in my room constantly rotates or gets moved about. So, aside from where the kids sit, everything is carefully tucked away in doll boxes. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I play with mine often, and take them out as often as I can. I also sew for them, or craft things for them. So they are always being handled. I try to keep them out from direct sunlight if I'm outside. Where they sit, I have a bridal dupatta hanging down infront of them. They are also out of direct sunlight. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I can go either way. I made it, if it breaks I can fix it. I still get a little pissed, but it's not really a concern. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? ...no? Most people don't care/don't ask. They're dolls. They are your characters, if you chose to make a character. If someone has a problem with a doll's sexuality, that's their issue. You do you, and surround yourself with positive people. I think it's a dumb thing to be concerned about, imo. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? This is also another issue that seems dumb to me. Mistakes happen. Take it with a grain of salt. If the person gets pissy about the correction, then drop it and leave them be. It's their issue, not yours. They. Are. Dolls. They're made for enjoyment. If it makes you happy, keep on doing you! I tend to have fun with this type of situation, as most of my experiences are comical and fun. For example, I sometimes intentionally dress my dolls either feminine or androgenous. A person would go "Oh she's pretty!!" And then I'd go, "He is, isn't he?" Most people I've spoken to, just roll with it. Unless it's obvious I have a male and they make a mistake. It's like correcting people about a pet's gender. No biggie. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? I'm a bad dad and haven't made any underwear for anyone. They're all freeballing, aside from bright pink underwear I bought from a friend. I can't remember which boys are wearing them.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I actually do not know, and am afraid to find out. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Maybe the arms, or hands, since I move those a lot to dress the doll. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I don't discuss dolls with non-doll friends. If they ask, I'll answer, but otherwise, nope. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Not really, as I believe everyone has their own hobbies that they spend (a lot more than they should) for. When asked, I ask back if they're willing to give me back the cost. Not the best reply, I know, but usually stops them from asking. Applicable for anything that I collect. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? As I'm new to the hobby, I do not have a permanent storage yet. The clothes and accessories are currently stored in tin cans, just to make sure they do not get lost. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I make sure that the dog in our house does not get near the dolls. That and I sanitize my hands before holding them. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I would prefer something more sturdy right now. Maybe when I have a more permanent storage for them, I would consider thinner fabrics. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? No. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? I wouldn't be bothered if they get it wrong, but it's a doll. Why ask? 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? The funniest thing happened when I bought my doll - I remembered to buy a pair of underwear and a wig as it was nude (no eyes, wig, clothes), but I forgot to buy the eyes. I ordered the eyes immediately when I realized my mistake.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? With a few exceptions in thinner areas, nope. Yes, I've accidentally broken off fingers and an elf ear tip once, but nothing big. And once a tiny pet doll I had just gotten slipped out of my fingers when I was done with a few pics and of course he had to hit the stone floor instead of falling into the grass. And OF COURSE he had to fall onto the ONE spot that was blushed and had a scratch there. I repaired it more or less, but the area is a bit lighter. I have included it in his story as a tiny battle scar :3 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Fingers and pointed ears. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? My non-doll friends are aware of my hobby and tend to be amazed by my creations and even ask if I have anything new to show (that they haven't seen yet). Sometimes they see tiny props and either send me pics and asking if they should pick it up for me or simply surprise me It's awesome being able to be so open and them being interested even if it isn't for them. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Eh... It depends on who is asking and how they are asking. I tend to be honest and vague at the same time. I explain it's an artdoll and they can be from low to VERY expensive depending on where and how they are produced and if it's gererally an expensive brand or not. If they ask about one particular doll, I'm honest. It gets raised eyebrows at times, but pointing out that they have their own thing that costs a lot that they prioritize over other stuff usually tends to help. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? PROPS! Depending on what it is or how fragile it is, I bubble wrap them during storage. For weapons and the like I have an own drawer, so nothing gets bend or broken or has heavy items placed on top. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I'm careful, but not overly careful. Like I handle most with care, but not like they'll break if I look at them funny. No gloves, no storing in boxes. Most stand or sit in a cabinett without any aid. I am careful to keep the cabinet out of direct sunlight, but I will take my dolls out for a photoshoot or meet where they might be exposed to sun for a couple of hours and I'm ok with that. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? It depends on the doll I want the items for. Usually I prefer items to be sturdy, but e.g. if I wanted a tiara or crown then obviously that one would most likely be more on the fragile side. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? ... What? XD It's a doll. How can it have a sexuality? If it's about the doll's character it is meant to represent... Ask away. I might not have an answer yet thought as unless story-wise it's important or I got a relationship planned I don't waste time to think about these things. They develop as they develop :3 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Depends on the doll. I'm aware that some of them are androgyn-looking, so I can't really blame anyone to get confused. If I did my best to make it male-looking and dressed that doll accordingly and someone assumes it's a girl regardless... Yes, then it bothers me. I have allowed some to 'take a look' for themselves. Some reactions are just hilarous. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Eeeeh... I think one of my boys has briefs and the girls with dresses or similar got panties. Mainly for decency sake and only if needed, because I dislike how more layers limit movement and posabilty.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I think they are a lot stronger then they seem. When I first started the hobby I heard of all these horror stories of broken and scratched dolls. I remember when I got my full set Dollzone Nina, I went to look at her and off the head cap flew, bouncing on the hard floor a few times! I was so sure it was broken, but not a scratch. I've since dropped other doll parts, no damage. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? I am guessing the fingers? Although I have had hands fly off and bounce on the concrete/marble floor on my bedroom when trying to change something out. I am still a little cautious of my dolls hands when changing clothing, or setting them someplace for pictures. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I am the crazy doll person and I am fine with that. I also have a IRL friend, who doesn't live near me, but collects BJD's. I found out about it after she moved away. My grandmother was a doll collector, no one in the family cares that I collect them. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? I don't always mention the cost, sometimes I skirt around the price of my dolls, or a mention having gotten a great deal, or gotten them on sale. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I think their furniture and props are the things that take up the most space, I recently found a wonderful vintage toy box, and a lot of the props fit nicely in it, but not all the props. I still have some of the props in inconvenient places in my room. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? Nope, no gloves, I take them outside, I have them stand on the grass, lean against stuff. The msd and smaller dolls sit on furniture in a sort of diorama, The sd dolls are siting around by my computer. I don't have any sunlight in my room because of a big oak tree. I wouldn't wrap them up, because then I can't see them and do things with them. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I like both. I keep them in casual clothing, but when they dress up sometimes I want to play around with their look, and I like to make fun off beat things for them using items that clothing and wigs are not usually made of. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? I really don't think about their sexuality much. I don't think I would care if someone asked me one way or another, I would have to think about it, or I might not be able to answer. I do think it would be too personal of a question for me to ask someone about their dolls. I would feel embarrassed to outright ask someone. A lot of people post dolls with the dolls significant other. I guess that tells me without the asking. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No, it doesn't bother me. I have one male doll who dresses female. He is a boy doll, and he likes being a boy doll. When I post pictures I put 'He' in the title. If someone got it wrong though, I wouldn't worry about it, unless they look as if they are doing it intentionally. Then I might mention something. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? My girl dolls all have cute panties on. My boys go commando.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I play with them all the time but I've only broken one finger. I have knowingly received dolls with broken fingers and repaired them. They are really much stronger than they seem. I've dropped several over the years and had no damage thankfully. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Their fingers and ears on elves/vampires. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I am very open about my doll-love. I even take mine to the local bookstore/coffee shop. Some even have 'fans' there. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Only one person has asked how much they are and blanched when I told them, but they were impressed with all the customizing you can do on a BJD. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? 3 things; 1. feather wings are a nightmare to store, 2. dioramas and room boxes take up so much room and 3 wigs, I like to have the inside stuffed with tissue and a hairnet if possible. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Not at all. Do you wear gloves? No, except when doing faceups. Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? No, but a few are under the bed in a covered linen box, but it is temporary. Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? Yes, I don't take them out into the bright sun light, indirect light even outdoors is best for photos anyway. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I have a few delicate things that only come out for photos but mostly their stuff is sturdy, since I'm a klutz. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? No, they each have their story and history of why they are what they are. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? No and Yes, their reaction was hilarious too. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Most don't wear anything under their jeans but if they need underwear I made plenty of boxers for them to wear. I only have one girl and she pretends she's a boy.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? No one has ever been cracked, but I have a couple with really minor scratches. Honestly, I think Resin is tougher than I think it is, but I will continue to treat it like it isn't based on the relative cost of replacing my dolls. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Faceups. Scratching faceups is far easier than chipping the actual resin. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I'm open with people who I think will get it, otherwise I mention it in a casual kind of "well, I'm creating my characters in 1/3 scale" kind of way when people ask what I need all those craft supplies for. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? Usually I have to gage why. DO people want to know so they can get one, or so they have a barometer for how weird my hobby is, or becasue I made some reference to the fact that I'm broke till next paycheque becasue of them? If I'm the one who brought up money (eg: 'I'm careful cause they're a little pricey' or 'welllll I just bought a doll, so I don't think I can go out to eat with you guys till I get paid') it's on me for mentioning it. Usually I'll just say that they're my one big money sink and leave it to that. If I think they're asking to get a feel for how 'weird' they think I am, I'll usually shrug, and say that they cost "more than I wish they did" or something to that effect. If someone is interested, I'll give them the price of a few of mine--from the Withdoll Adriana/resinsoul hybrid (under 200, I think?) to the Dollzone guy ($400-ish?) to the iple girl (600+ depending on resin) to like my RD Frankenstein (1k, second hand). That way they kinda get a feel for the range of prices. I also stop listing if I sense they're not comfortable with the price point I hit. I'm a university student, and I am very lucky to have had the opportunities I have. My family has been able to pay for my schooling. I was able to use connections to get a good job this summer, and I was able to get a job at age sixteen that I kept until this summer position. I don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable based on my spending habits, or see me differently, because I have worked for what I have, yes, but not nearly as hard as other people, without my opportunities have worked for less than I've received, and I try to be self aware and understand that. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? Small resin accessories (masks, weapons, props, etc) tend to stay wrapped, especially if they're painted! 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I am not as careful as I could be. My dolls sit in a room with really thick curtains, on the shelves that aren't close to the little slit of light that gets through the curtain. I don't wear gloves, but do wash my hands and avoid touching faces. Once, on a really, really rough day after a fight with my ex, who was not my ex at the time, I had just curled around one of my new acquisitions, and wound up napping with her there. She wasn't damaged at all, especially becasue she was blank, but that would be an "at your own risk" kind of ordeal. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I love the aesthetic of it, and I've actually yet to have anything break, knock on wood! Though I also love leather and that's about the sturdiest fabric there is. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Being the first person in my irl friend group to come out (twice! I thought I was bi and then explained to the friends that I'm a lesbian a couple years later) I don't think questions about my own sexuality are too personal, depending on the intent and the wording. If someone uses a slur and demands to know, or is clearly conflating me with something out of adult films, I don't like it (and with dolls it isn't different) . I frequently have old friends seeing pictures of me with my girlfriend and asking, so it's something I'm used to and a little outspoken about. All my finished dolls with profiles should have sexualities on their profiles. A vast number of the ones I'm holding onto in my most recent reshuffle are women, and the majority of them are bi, pan or lesbians. The couple of male characters I'm really invested in are both bisexual. Conversely, I understand other people feeling that's something personal. I tend to be careful, and if I feel like someone is intentionally not addressing sexuality, leave it alone, or out myself/my dolls first. If someone doesn't tell me their sexuality just because I'm mentioning mine (or the same thing, but with dolls) it's not my business, and they don't "owe" it to me, as I've volunteered my own information freely, but hopefully it means they know that if they want to talk about LGBTQ things, or doll things, that I'm safe to talk about it with. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? That would mean I'd have to be posting pictures regularly. I have a character I know that's going to happen with (like, a lot, becasue she's butch, and presents very masc, but identifies as a woman) and another I might be making who is agender. I chalk a lot of it up to socially engrained gender norms. For either of them, I'll probably just put a little text after photos, like "This is Atonia and I love her" or "Venestus is proud of themself for stealing this pair of leggings" that has a name and pronoun use in it without being overt, bolded and like "VENESTUS. THEY/THEM" because as integral as it is to the character, I'd prefer not to have to explain my characters on every post. If people misgender them in comments, (like saying "I love him!") of either character, I'll reply with a "Thank you! I also love (her/them, depending on the character)" becasue usually people arent intentionally getting it wrong, and that way, correcting them doesn't become about shaming them, or even look like a big deal. I do, however, understand people who dislike their dolls being misgendered (either because they personally get misgendered irl, or because they feel it's intentional). I don't know what being misgendered is like, as a femme cis woman. I do my best to look for the owner's use of pronouns, or use they, or say "your doll" rather than using a pronoun, to try to prevent myself from doing that! If ever I do get it wrong, I seriously hope I don't come through as malicious, and that the other person lets me know so I can apologize and refer to them right going forward. As for Atonia and Ness, showing off their parts wouldn't ] be indicative. Atonia will likely be on the DT18yrs body, and will have a female body, but if I make her out of a modded male body, or if her character is trans, her resin genitals aren't indicative of her gender. Ness as well wouldn't benefit form anything like that. biological sex is more complex than xx/xy, and gender identity does not have to be linked to that, so I'd much prefer to explain if it feels like there's some kind of misconception! 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? My male dolls are commando right now! But I have some really pretty lingerie on a couple of the ladies!
1. A few of my doll's wrists have dents where I rested the S hook while I took off their hands. One girl has a scratch on her chest, courtesy of a stray pin -_-;; 2. The aforementioned wrists. 3. I'm very open about my hobby, and bring sewing and crafting everywhere with me. 4. People rarely ask. 5. Some props are small and easy to lose. Sometimes It's buried inn the bottom of a bag and requires serious digging. 6. I try to shield them from sunlight, and wrap cloth around them when I carry them about. 7. Depends on the doll and outfit. Sometimes ethereal is the look I'm going for, other times utilitarian. 8. I don't think very often about my dolls' sexualities. 9. I'm bemused how some of my girls have been mistaken for boys in drag, but this is a rare issue. 10. Briefs, bloomers or combinations, depending on the doll.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I think they’re far studier than we think! I’ve only ever had one doll break a finger, and he fell off a table at a meet-up. I have one body that has a couple of chips – but it’s nearly 7 years old and strung quite tightly, and nothing a light sanding wouldn’t fix. 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? Definitely the hands! I absolutely adore expressive hand sculpts, and I’m always quite careful with them since they seem fragile. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? It’s kind of the middle-of-the-road for me. I used to be a bit sheepish about it, but I’ve been more open in recent years and I find that most people aren’t as weirded out as I think they’ll be. 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? No. They’re expensive, but I feel as if they’re a piece of art. Especially now that I’m in a good place career-wise, I don’t mind so much. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I find wigs are difficult for me to keep nice. Of course, I’m drawn to curlier hairstyles so I know that can be a factor. 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? Not as delicately as I should, probably. XD I don’t wear gloves, and I do generally keep them on display. If one of them isn’t dressed, they tend to stay in their storage or a carrier. I used to worry a lot more about yellowing when I lived in the South (Georgia/Arkansas) since it was so hot. Now I’m in a much colder place with less intense sun. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? Absolutely! Most of my dolls tend to wear casual/modern clothing, but I love picking up the occasional clothing set that goes all out. I try to be very careful with those, though, and they tend to be for special occasions. 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Not really! Although that really isn’t a focus for my dolls. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? Nope! Mine are pretty easy to identify, but I wouldn’t be upset with my more androgynous characters. 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? Only the girls wearing skirts, haha! Otherwise I think they add unnecessary bulk.
1. How delicate are your dolls? Have you ever broken, scratched, or cracked them? Or do you think they are stronger than they seem? I accidentally broke off a doll's finger, and I'm too afraid of glueing it back on wrong! 2. What do you think is the most delicate part of a doll? ....Fingers.... and elf ears, or extra parts that stick out such as that... pointy noses... and the joint edges, which can chip over time. 3. Are your dolls a delicate topic with your non-doll friends, or are you open with your doll-love? I have slowly brought it up around friends I am very close to, but I ended up converting a few of them so they are the ones I talk to about it the most! 4. Do you think people asking how much your dolls cost is a delicate question? Has this happened to you, and if so, how do you answer them? To be asked by someone uninterested in BJD makes it a bit delicate, because they are most likely going to judge you and your collection for the price. 5. What doll-related items are the most difficult to store? Do you go out of your way to wrap or protect certain items? I don't have many doll related items that aren't doll parts, so I supposed the hardest is storing melamine sponges...because I keep forgetting where I put them 6. How delicately do you handle your dolls? Do you wear gloves? Do you keep them wrapped up carefully in boxes? Do you worry about how much sun or light they get? I used to wear gloves all the time, but I really like the tactile feeling of dolls so I just wash my hands before I touch them. And I forgot where I put my gloves. I have sun blocking curtains. They are all in boxes except for the one with clothes and shoes, because I've found even a simple surface can start to leave a mark on a bare doll if they sit there for weeks. 7. Do you like delicate items for your dolls, made with feathers, fine fabrics, lace, crystals, etc.? Or do you prefer something more strong and sturdy? I like all of the doll things!! 8. Do you think questions about your doll's sexuality is too personal? Just as you wouldn't normally ask someone that, I think it's best to let the doll owner say it if they want to on their own time and terms. Not everyone is comfortable with that subject matter, or some people don't even think about their dolls to that extent and/or do not want to. 9. Does it bother you if people get the sex of your doll wrong? Have you ever shown off your doll's parts to prove what sex it is? It doesn't really bother me. It's a cultural thing, people make assumptions about gender and gender roles all the time, and getting upset with them for being mistaken will not make them more open minded. Of course not everyone gets upset! I would still correct them just to see their shock at the anatomical correctness if they ask for proof, haha 10. Boxers or briefs? --Do your dolls wear underwear? My only doll with clothes has pants so tight they have to be unzipped and halfway down just to male him sit (thanks Souldoll). He does not wear anything underneath, because I don't even think the pants would fit anymore...
