My dollmaking comes from a different direction than most, though in the end it may land on the same spot. I primarily work in wood, though I like the relative speed of ooak polymer. I started dollmaking to fulfill a need in the Bay Area Lucummi (Santeria/ Espiritista) community. Sometimes priests need dolls for spiritual work. The commercial options blow, especially if a black doll is called for. So, priests and espiritistas know they can come to me with generalized specifics about how a doll should look, the age, the color, color of eyes and hair, expression, etc. and I fill in the rest. As any dollmaker knows, at a certain point the doll itself takes over. Five years ago I would not have believed this was where I'd be, but there you have it. I am interested in exploring BJD dollmaking -- the sculpting, the molding and casting, and the finishing. I have ideas piling up inside my head and, as we all know, there's only one way to get them out...
