I am starting to think my first BJD is going to be a Frankenstein attempt with all the different parts. With that being said I am curious about the jointed hands. Would anyone here be able to take some photos for reference or tell me how well the jointed hands hold poses? I am looking for instances with say a hand upturned with wine glass held between the middle and ring finger, the fingers themselves delicately curled close to the glass as well as how well holding a fist or say a staff would look. I don't mean to be a menace, I'm just trying to get this all situated before Friday when I make my order with DDE.
From what I understand, all jointed hands pose differently, and they all pose differently depending on if they have been wired/strung properly. Is there a certain company that you are looking for information on their jointed hands?
Afraid I won't be able to help by Friday, but I do have a couple pairs of joined hands by Dikadoll and DF-H on order to try with my Minifees. If you're still interested in a couple months or whenever they get here, I'll gladly post reference photos then.
Without wiring, many jointed hands from different companies tend to have trouble holding some particular poses. From what I have heard, Fairy Castle's jointed hands are the best at holding poses, they also have resin samples from other companies so resin matching wouldn't be as hard.
My DDP has jointed hands! They hold poses nicely and I haven’t had any issues. These are ones by GensouDoll specially meant for vinyl dolls though so I don’t really know if they are different than ones meant for resin BJD hands. I don’t have a wine glass prop so I can’t take a picture with one but I can try imitating the pose for a photo when I have the chance after work.
I have a Pair of Dika Doll female hands on a male Doll Leaves Teenage Dream and they fit very well. Mine pose fine without wire, but they do need restringing more often than the rest of the doll because of the extreemly thin elastic and it is doable, but tricky. Here is an example of what they are good at: The main limitation is that while the fingers are poeable, the palm itself is not. If you look at your own hand and try a couple of different grabbing and holding motions you will see that the palm flexes as well, especcially around where the thumb connects to the hand. The Dika Doll hands can do any pose that doesn't rely on reshaping the palm to pull them off. I also have a Doll Family -H with jointed hands by the same company. These are much more dificult to pose, having a tendency to snap into extreeme poses. They are also quite a bit larger than the default hands, despite being made for the same body. They are ok, but they are nowhere near as nice to work with and the Dika Doll hands. That could be a preference thng, though. I don't think I own a doll sized wine glass, but I could probably take a few pictures on other poses if you like. For what it's worth, I find it much more rewarding to get to know a doll and explore what they can and can't do and then learn to work around those abilities and limitations, rather than going in with a set expectation. It helps to avoid frustartion.
Oooh that looks lovely. I was looking at the hands from..... Dika Doll on Alice's Collection. With the long nails. If the jointed hands aren't going to work then I will need to find a work around. Another one I have to add to the list. Thank you so much for sharing and the great advice.
Omg this helps me a lot!! I want to hybrid my Minifee dark elf Soo event head with a doll leaves Myth body but i want more hand poses. Didn't know dikadoll would match so well!!
Ooooh. I wonder if those could be modded to work on BJD's because those come much much closer to the size I need. I have a pair of Resinsoul jointed hands which are really great and I love them but a lot of jointed BJD hands, especially for MSD sized dolls, have really chunky wrists and quite large hands. Which looks a little silly even on some of my larger MSD dolls and would absolutely not work for my 38cm doll that I really want jointed hands for.
To make a very extreme generalization from my limited experiences, jointed hands can make a lot of great natural poses to interact with objects but a big difference from human hands is grip strength, particularly in the thumb. The thumb feels a bit too decorative at times so gripping something that is relying on thumb strength is the challenge. And yes, different brands with better/worse/differently, so my advice is to seek specific reviews of hands you end up considering.
This is very true. Sometimes it helps to stick the prop to the hand by some other means and just pose the fingers around it, rather than relying on the fingers themselves to hold the weight. "Invisible" hair ties or a small piece of poster tack in the palm of the hand usually does the trick.
I just researched them while catching up on this thread, and they have ones that look like they're designed to go with resin dolls as well! They've got above and beyond the greatest number of available sizes I've seen, too. I'm really impressed and will probably try some soon.
When you see jointed hands in pictures, is there ways you can tell the quality? Or is it all word of mouth?
Ok just in case the jointed hands don't work, what hands would y'all recommend that are posed. I'm looking for a variety of poses in the hands alone.
You can tell a little from pictures, but really everything retailers show for dolls is photographed to look as high-quality as possible. Talking to other doll owners is definitely the best way to learn basic quality, but since everyone has different preferences even that doesn't guarantee you'll love something other people love. I'd say that depends on what doll you get to a very strong degree; may I ask which doll you're leaning towards? I'm a big fan of how much variety Fairyland hands provide with their different shapes, but Minifee are on the smaller end for MSD, so there are quite a few dolls they scale well with even with a wrist connector. I'd really strongly recommend getting your doll first, and waiting on hands until you've had a chance to try out what they can do by themselves. It's genuinely amazing to me just how versatile a relaxed open hand is on its own.
I would also love to see more pictures of jointed hands posed and holding things. For MiniFees that have magnetic hands, would it be difficult to find jointed hands?
From what I've seen the jointed hands aren't magnetic so you'd probably have to change it out. I don't know how hard that would be though as I've yet to get my girl. Still debating on whether or not to keep the minifee body as I won't be using her as much unless I want to make something specifically for the minifee. I plan on using the doll leaves body I'm getting. Just need to know how well both will hold dye.
Here is the same doll as before, holding a staff: He is holding the staff on his own, but if it were heavier some form of trickery may be required. And under the spoiler, same doll again holding a mug and a DF-H holding an identical mug. Note the difference in hand size, simply being marketed as 1/4 or MSD-sized in not enough to tell if a pair of hands is going to fit the doll. Spoiler: Jointed hands.
Could you post picture of the resinsoul hands in few poses? I've been curious about those since they're more on the affordable than a lot of other options.
For sure. I had them in a bag with my DikaDoll jointed hands so I grabbed those as a counterpoint. The Resinsoul ones are the ones in white. Both are supposed to be for female dolls. First really good thing about the Resinsoul ones. The fingers don't randomly turn around on you. Because they've all got their little niches they physically cannot rotate the way you can see one of the pinkies on the DikaDolls hands have. You can get some pretty stable flexing of even the fingertip joint although getting that to stay that way longterm is iffy without wiring. Gripping. I might have just got lucky because my hands came really nicely strung. Great balance of being tight enough to actually grip things but not too tight to be constantly moving out of position. The ink cartridge was what I had to hand that was the right size to be gripped and while it's not heavy, the hands did have really quite a good hold on it. I gave it a shake and they didn't let go. I didn't manage to get it on camera but I tried the same thing with the DikaDoll hands and they were much less cooperative. Sizing. The doll is an Iplehouse FID because she was what I had to hand (the wig is over the face mostly so my camera wouldn't auto-focus on her). The hands themselves don't look comically oversized but the wrists are a lot more massive than her regular hand making them very obvious. If you've got sanding tools and appropriate respiratory protection you probably could sand them down so they'd be more inclined to fit into the wrist cavity a lot better. Of the two pairs of jointed hands I've got, they are by far and away my favourite. I mostly bought them as an experiment and I'm really glad I did even if they don't actually match the resin colour of any of the dolls I have.
Thank you for the pictures @Crissaegrim! They look really nice, maybe I'll order a pair and see how they feel in use.
Hi all! I'm considering getting some jointed hands for one of my dolls. I would like some advice to help me figure out which ones would be best. From the pictures posted, the Resinsoul ones look like they'd work nicely since I'm looking for a bigger size hand. Also a bonus if they have a good resin match for Dollshe Oriental skin. Here's my doll's original hand measurements:
@Fiesty_Fennec if you're looking for solid hands that come in many poses, try LUTS hands. For several of their sizes, they have hands in various poses. I have a couple dolls who use LUTS hands for the poses.
I can't confirm sizing or posing for Resinsoul, but I can confirm they offer a color matching service that can be ordered from them directly!
Oh wow, that's super helpful, thank you! Just need to figure out the sizing then. I'm looking at Hand-04 and Hand-02 on the Resinsoul website. Hand-02 is apparently for 1/3 dolls but the measurement seems closest to what I need. Much confuse I wonder if the hand length listed on the webpage includes that little ball joint? I'm guessing it does? If so, maybe I could get those and then just sand it down a bit to create a smaller wrist. I would need 4.5cm wrist size.
