Accessories Jewelry Question (Metal Claw Caps)

Dec 8, 2020

    1. I have been on a wild goose chase to find myself in possession of Tous Les Garcon's Sleeping beauty set, and while that dream might come true, I'm asking myself if I really want to pay the fullset price when I really just want the jewelry (and the cloak, but that's another story.)

So, does anyone know how to make claw caps for dolls? These look like some sort of metal piece that's been bent around the finger, which seems doable enough. But I'm curious if any of you have some insight on where to find pieces like this, or if these are something that could be easily found at the craft store (they look like something I've seen before for human-sized earrings or jewelry before)

      Thanks so much in advance!

    2. I posted this and then had an epiphany. I'm certainly no jewelry maker, but should I be looking for "bead cones" in my endeavor?

      These look similar, right?

    3. You can take filigree and bend them into shape.

The term you are looking for is "filigree cone".

    4. @Syko Thank you, this is so helpful!

    5. But how do they fasten them securely to the fingers without scratching the resin? I know these bend easily, but I really wonder, since it can be difficult to do with simple rings, let alone filigree cones which have all sorts of sharp edges and tips...

    6. @Mandagore I was wondering the same thing. Judging by the pictures, it seems like there's really no barrier between the metal and the resin. My boy's hands are getting blushed, so I'm willing to sacrifice a little bit of the sealant coat, but I would definitely be wary of repeatedly taking these on and off raw resin (though, luckily for me, my character wears these almost constantly)

    7. maybe add something inside for grip and protect your hands? like a thin layer of glue or equivalent?

    8. @lukita that's a great idea. I will definitely be brushing the insides with a thin layer of glue!

    9. @appleskins I do have some filigree cones, or bead cones, got them years ago to put on my dolls' fingertips but I never did it. They definitely have sharp edges and pointy bits that you have to press down around the finger to make them stay on. I blush hands too, and the blushing would certainly get damaged. A layer of glue will probably not help to avoid that, I am afraid, but the idea is worth developing further.
What's that putty-like stuff called that you can put on a doll's hand so you can affix things like they are holding something? Only, it can not contain any oily substances...

    10. thermoplastic clay or the ones from japan oyumaru daiso might also work if you can get it thin enough to fit inside the cone, there are white/clear ones, and file down the edges

    11. You can use a tiny piece off a kneading eraser. They are sticky enough to hold most anything in place, and archival because they are meant for art -- they don't have any oils, nor do they leave any residues behind. I like the ones from the General's brand, because they never dry out or get funky textures with age, but I'm sure there are other similar brands. (:

    12. @Enzyme Thanks for that, great tip! <3

    13. @Enzyme This is a fantastic idea, I'll definitely give it a go once the caps arrive and share whether or not it worked!

    14. I use kneaded erasers to hold eyes in my BJD (and OT dolls with optional eyes), they hold even glass, so I am assuming they would hold the caps. These jewelry bits seem pretty light weight, so I would be surprised if they didn't work. It would be cool to hear your experience however, more so if you're not in the USA, and don't have access to General's brands art supplies. (:

    15. Keep in mind, you will see what you put in those cones. Mine stay on fairly well all on their own, her hands are not painted. You can also look for different styles under the name of bolo caps. I got mine at a jewelry/ bead store. Those look to be embellished with nail jewelry too!
