Japanese sewing pattern books, new or old?

Aug 13, 2005

    1. I found these sewing books on Ebay, this volume in particular has some nice SD sized patterns. http://cgi.ebay.com/Gothic-and-Loli...55367QQcategoryZ29260QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
Has anyone used this before? if so, are they good patterns? Regardless of the instruction in japanese, they usually aren't too hard to figure out. Thanks for any responses ahead of time *because I mgiht not be here for the rest of the day.

    2. I have that volume - it's only a few months old. They're only up to volume 5 so far.

As for that price, not this century buddy! It retails for 990 yen (roughly $10). You can order it yourself from Amazon Japan (link here) and still pay less than $35 (total from amazon would be less than 2490 yen).

If you're willing to wait, I'm going to be placing another order from Amazon JP in early September. I'm more than happy to throw the book into my order if you're willing to split the shipping. (TreeLore wants the Com 'P-X book as well, so that would base shipping split three ways, possibly more if others are interested.)

      LMK

    3. Oh wow! Thank you for that information on the price as well! *_* I thought 35 dollars was a bit much., but I wasn't sure how much you got from it.
Thank you for the offer too with ordering from Y!Japan. I'll talk it over with my dad and see if he'll let me do that! :daisy

    4. Only a few months old? O_O; I had that volume before I got into BJDs... and that must be over 6 months now! And yeeees - $35 is certainly more than you should pay for it anyway.

That being said - only some of the patterns are actually full sized, and they're all printed on the same piece of paper, just in different colours. None of the doll patterns come printed full size, so you have to redraft them. They look pretty easy to do, though, but I just haven't gotten around to doing it yet.

    5. Yeah, most of the magazine patterns in Japanese mags aren't fullsized. Thank you though for the info! :daisy

    6. i'm interested! sort of like a group order right?

    7. That volume is also less than $20, if I remember correctly, at Kinokiniya bookstores, if there's one anywhere near your area or if you have a friend with one near their area. Perhaps I could even pick one up for you, for a dollar or two. Just a thought ^^

    8. I sized up the diagrams for a coat from one of the Homemade Gothic & Lolita mags; about 200% of the diagram--not the pattern, made the bodice fits like a coat-dress.

The sleeve would be fine, except my SDC Kurenai's spread fingers don't fit much past the biceps line. I will be putting in a triangular godet to the sleeve so my Dorothy can wear her coat dress.

So, some tweaking required, but the patterns can definately be used.

You may wish also to have a 'how-to-sew' book on hand if you are not experienced in sewing. Any of the pattern manufacturers, Reader's Digest, whatever--get them from a local library. That way you have diagrams of what a pattern piece should be shaped like--oh, that's a bodice front/side-front/side-back/back ('princess' seams on the coat I'm working on).

    9. The volume came out October 2004 - time flies when you're aging . Yeesh... 10 months already *_*

Precisely. I did a Luts group order and all went well, so why not Amazon Japan order since I'm old hat at it? I'll make a thread in the marketplace after I come back from Otakon.

    10. I would like to be in on a group order too.
I have that magazine, and I havn't used those patterns yet, but they look really neat.
I have used some of them Jenny pattern books, with the help of a page of translation of the major sewing words, I made them with out stress and they came out very nice.
