Discussion It Was Cool at the Time

Aug 14, 2009

    1. So, hopefully by now you've shared your very favorite picture in this thread, but what about those pictures from the past that make you groan a bit now. You know...you had just gotten that wig, and it was 2005, and you took a picture against your mom's wallpapered cabinet, with flash, on your camera phone, and thought, "Wow...that really does look good!"

And here it's 2009 and you run across it in your computer and wince. "Eep...what the heck was I thinking? That wig doesn't fit at all and...what is he wearing???"

Yup. I know they exist. I'm using my cyber dog powers to see right into your hard drives. Since I've seen them, everyone else might as well.

Post up the one picture that you thought was amazing when you first took it, but is a tad cringe-worthy now. Remember that there's no shame here, we're sharing! To prove it, here's one of my very embarrassing baby pictures.

It's true...the puppy uglies were cruel to me. Now you can't say that I'm not one of you.

      POST!

    2. I guess I'll start off... A picture of Kelyn from four years ago. I thought it was pretty good at the time... But it's blurry (because I had a horrible camera) and he's laying flat so it's not very visually interesting... Luckily, the wig fits and he's wearing his defaults from DoD, so I can't say he was dressed badly. XD; I'm sure I used to have worse ones, actually, but this is what I could find.

    3. [IMG]

from her very first photoshoot.. its ok but i didnt know what to do with her arms.. lol

    4. Awwh, Truff, you looked adorable as a baby! Nothing at all embarrassing about extreme cuteness. ^.^

The thought: OH WOW, she looks so shiny and pretty and glowy!!

And today? UGH, such high contrast! What was I thinking? Granted, that was only about a year ago, so I feel like I've made a bit of progress since then. :sweat

    5. XD My pic!
Alexis with a lot of flash, bed in the background and old Make Up!

    6. This was from back in 2005 when I owned a Hound, and I'd just recently gotten my first (very cheap) digital camera ever. I thought the sepia setting was SO COOL and proceeded to take a ton of photos with it, with no editing to the color or anything. Also, this is actually one of the less awkwardly posed photos from that shoot. :sweat

    7. Oh...yeah...everything about my first photoshoot (4-28-06) with my first doll Claude was bad. XD
      Blurry camera, check.
      Hideous styling fail, check.
Failed attempt at 'artistic background' with hideous yellow tile still showing, check.
      Awkward newbie doll posing, check.
      I was so excited to have him, though...that I didn't notice how bad they really were. XD;;;
*hides under a rug from embarassment*

    8. xD Truff I see your Pom Pup Pic and I raise you a Pom Pup IN A SHIRT Pic:

Haha but okay yes, embarrassing doll pics... This is the first EVER pic of my first boy, Tsukasa, with his ugly default eyes and no sense of style whatesoever:

      I shudder. xD

    9. Ohh, I have a crapload of horrible pictures...It was hard for me to pick just one =P But, this one is probably the worst I could find...

I took it to show off Lucian's first face-up (which was also my first attempt at a face-up). I didn't really know what I was doing, face-up-wise, or photography-wise... The lighting is horrible, the picture is blurry, and the face-up.... well, let's just say I messed up his lips, and then tried to fix them, and it didn't work so well...

    10. I was really trying hard to make a beautiful picture XD And I liked the outcome then.

Now, it could be a beautiful picture if the lighting was more subtle and the setting more interesting (like real flowers etc)

    11. Bahahah! NICE! Crap photo time! I have no shortage of those!

I remember taking this and thinking I was all keeeewl. Then I learned that nobody likes an up-the-nose shot. Or overexposed photos.

Also, she is wearing the first and last piece of doll clothing that I've made... a corset and skirt from a free pattern (skirt from James?) and a little boa made by a friend.

    12. And this is what happens when you're a n00b at BJDs and you think you're awesome. Oh! And you're using a camera that you have no business even touching (Nikon D100). Poor Seth (BF Niky) was my first BJD. I hadn't really handled any before him either. His wig was definitely on sideways and he's doing some kind of action pose. XD And BTW, he's not white skin. :|

    13. This was from the first set I ever took...say no more:

    14. [IMG]

Default Token is Default..and that wig..-_- Ugh, I should have never cut it, to think I ever thought he looked good in that stuff. -headwall-

    15. When I was looking for a photo for the "Represent!" thread, I suddenly realized that all my old pics were disappointing.
Lighting is always a problem, even with my light box. The doll's face is washed out and I didn't know how to use photoshop at the time so I couldn't erase the corner seam of the box.

    16. [IMG]

From when I first got into the hobby with my first doll that had to put with with my crappy faceups and cheap pieced together clothing. Oh yeah, I thought this shot was so cool.

    17. One of my early photos. I loved it at the time, though now see the focus is wrong, the light source is wrong, and the angle is kinda weird. :doh

    18. 2006.. the horror
      [IMG]
I'm surprized shes not wearing a sock-dress. not only did I think this picture was awesome I thought,
"Why should I buy wigs or shoes when I can make great ones with hot glue"

    19. New materials + 3rd faceup + a need to be silly = HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    20. Well having spent half my life in the photo industry, It would be kind of idiotic if I couldn't tell a bad pic from a good one. Best I could do is a "thought it would look cooler" kind of thing. Taken at a bar in the berg at dusk just when it was starting to crowd up so I couldn't play more.

    21. Huh, I've taken so many bad pictures so it really wasn't to hard to find one. This was taken right after I had gotten my first doll. At the time I just loved everything about it.... now it simply makes me shudder. The lighting is awful and not to mention that his eyes hadn't even been straightened out yet... ^^;

    22. [IMG]

One of my doll Kiyoshi's first photoshoots, when he was a DOD Si. I loved his little girly tube top too. >.< he dose not dress like that at all anymore.

    23. I STILL am not a great photographer, and I know it, which is why you don't see many gallery posts from me! But there are times when I make it even worse, like taking a rushed arrival photostory around dusk instead of just waiting like I should have...

It is dark, it is blurry, Issie's wig is messy and Emi looks like she's doing a left-handed Nazi salute. Sigh.

    24. hahaha I have alot of those. And some on my DA are the most faved ones, and I don't have the heart to delete them....

I hate this photo. I don't know why I even posted it up on DA. However, it is the one with the most faves. Why? It's horrid- the face up (by me and is ew) the straggly wig, the fact the focus isn't his face but his jumper

    25. First pic of my first BJD exactly as he came to me, taken with my cellphone.

    26. A-hurr hurr:

What a great pic, I thought. Getting a picture of Toby on my bro's drum set despite the crappy lighting on that room, I'll just turn on the flash, I thought. White balance, what's that?!

You can even see the rubber band holding his wig on. :doh

    27. Sad part is, this isn't even that old, really. Over Photoshopped mess with too much flash FTL. :(

    28. Okay... here it is.

      UUUUGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!! :doh

Yukio with his worst faceup. EVAR.
It's way worse than his original colored pencil doodle faceup and purple eyelashes, imho. XP

      It was so nasty! D:
I still blame the Testors for being a dust magnet, but my clean up job of his head before wasn't good either.
The stencil blue eyebrow blobs and over-sized lip piercing did not help him in any way. >_>
And his scar... It taught me to stay away from scars and Elmer's Glue. :sweat

But in all honesty, I love that wig and I like the clothes he had on in the pic. >w>

    29. [IMG]

Because heads-on-a-bottle, clothes that look like socks (even if they aren't made from them) and a messy desk background are oh so cool. Heh.

    30. It's hard to pick just one out of the (almost) gigabyte of bad photos I have :sweat

Let's go with when I first discovered how to manipulate color saturation in photoshop, and glaring problems (camera wrist strap anyone?) went unnoticed

    31. here was my first dolly shoot. i was so "glamoured" *_* by her that i didnt even notice the nasty fish tank in the background. she was so beautiful that even bad, blurry, out of focus pix made her stunning. and i had no idea how to make her pose even slightly realistically. lol :doh

    32. I long ago deleted all my crappiest photos, which is too bad, because I had this really terrible shot of my MSD Shinshiya "Mouse" sitting on my couch against a cinderblock wall.
      Taken with flash! XD
I miss that photo almost as much as I miss the doll!

I'm not a very good photographer, and I have a lame camera, but this I think is the worst of what remains of my old gallery photos:

      First of all, NEVER photograph an Elf Soph from straight on. Her worst angle ^^;;
Secondly, lame faceup, though it was considered good at the time! XD
      Thirdly, FLASH (argh) #^^#

Though others always gripe me out about this I don't count the bulbous forehead. THAT'S on purpose! :-P

      Raven

    33. [IMG]

I even wrote "I looooove this photo" in the thread where I posted this picture.

    34. Hello, 2004! This was my first elf ear mod and my second faceup. At the time, I was pretty high on the discovery that lips looked cool with gloss... and this seemed to be a pretty sweet faceup. The towel made a pretty rad backdrop too.

    35. Such a creative shot :| I also used the sharpen filter a lot because my monitor was so old and blurry that I thought the photo was that smooth for everyone else :sweat

    36. I think I win. There is NOTHING right about this photo, one of the first I took with my first doll (a horrible Unoa BlueFairy hybrid) back in late 2006. First doll, first face-up, first photoshoot, first FAIL. D:
And no, I don't think I used glossy Testors on her...

    37. Let's travel back to 2004, shall we? Oh yeah...MSD Ken against foamcore. Made that straitjacket, and I was pretty danged proud!

    38. Blurry cell phone photo that I took the day my Yosd arrived. I was so excited upon his arrival I actually posted a box opening with this pic along with a few other blurry pics lol...

    39. Ha! HA! I'll take your Pom Pup in a shirt pic, and I'll raise you a fat dog in a little coat!

    40. First photostory. Had no clue where to put the words!
And... forgot to focus on his face... :sweat

    41. Hahaha, this was hard. Not to find an old photo of mine that stinks - all of them do really and most of my current ones do too - but to find one that I actually liked at the time I took it. So here we go. First day with my first doll, totally wrong eyes and hair but I had nothing else, but I was all proud of myself when I finally got an image that didn't look like he was staring zombielike at the camera. And that's a doll box as background with clothing hanging out of it, too. And it's grainy and the contrast is terrible and... yeah. :doh

    42. [IMG]

This picture was taken the day my first doll arrived. That was both the first and last time I used internal flash on a doll photo. Hard to believe this is the same doll today, huh? I also made her dress before I had seen her (or any doll) in person and it did not fit at all D:. Combine that all with the oh-so-lovely desktop background and uncoordinated posing, and you have one terrible photo!

    43. I loved this photo so much at the time, thought it was very artistic... it's not focused, there's a date stamp... why did I put a ribbon in his hair?! He looks like Snow freaking White!

Also, epically bad homemade shirt that closed with hooks and eyes (WHAT WAS I THINKING?!) and why is he holding a duck? o.O

    44. This was my first outdoor picture with my first doll. I was so proud that I got her to stand! I didn't even notice that: she is standing right in direct sunlight, Her arms are very unnatural, and her pose, outfit, and the angle make her look dwarfed. It didn't help that she came so loosely strung.

    45. Okies, this was probably never cool, but I thought it was such a cute idea at the time lol! *snickers at her poor Nono*

    46. [IMG]

One of my first photos. I'm pretty sure I thought it was great at the time. Now...ugh, no focus, the colors are all off, it's really grainy, his wig was really long, just bad all around. xDD

    47. Oh man, it's so hard to pick just one... I have so many awful early pics! :sweat

I chose this one because I really did think it was pretty good at the time:

Now I can see how poor Iris looks all spacey and doll-like, her eyes aren't placed right, the angle of the head and neck is off, the focus is all fuzzy, the highlights are blown-out... it's just kind of overall bleh. I've taken a lot worse, but most of the horrible ones I at least knew they were bad at the time. :sweat

    48. *cheers* Finally, I can post something! See, I know all of my pics still completely suck. I have a number of them that are just size comparisons and such that aren't meant to be proper images, I just don't even bother counting those in, since they aren't supposed to be anything other than quick reference.

I think this is my all time suck winner, though. :sweat

Second ever faceup... and it shows!

...or does it, because her face isn't even in focus?!

The taxidermy slit-pupil eyes? Look nice in person, really, but... in photos they -always- look wall-eyed, so I gave up on them completely after seeing how these pics came out.

Necklace... is just a strand of beads draped around her neck and it really shows. It isn't even on straight.

Wig? Needs grooming, badly. Extra bonus suckage points for how badly the leaves in the background clash with her hair color, too.

    49. This whole photoshoot was a big mistake - so many things went wrong :)

    50. I call this 'before Einon realised where the macro button was' From my first attempt at a photoshoot, makes me really cringe now I see it
      [IMG]

    51. I thought I was so cleaver when I took this picture, now I can't stop laughing at it :)

    52. Here's one that I thought was good at the time...

Why hello there badly lit badly focused shot. The wig is all wonky and Beren's eyes are <_>. The whole thing is pretty much terrible in every way.

    53. I have taken plenty of HORRIBLE photos in my time, but this is one that I was really insanely proud of... and I don't know why ^^a;

Granted, it's probably the clearest photo from that era (most pictures were blurry like whoa), but I still cut off faces, heads, etc... Overall, it's just not a good photo, so I don't know why I was proud of it....

    54. lloool.
my first doll ... and first doll photoshoot. I thought it was so epic!

    55. My frist BJD and first love~~~~~~~~

    56. Oh yeah accessories~ This was like day two.

    57. I thought I was suuuuuch an awesome photographer when I first got Mina.
Say hello to my horrible lamp-lighting and faceup!

and this is the only picture I snapped of my girl after she got her new wig/eyes. Poor girl, it's a crappy cellphone-pic...
      http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q76/rinnichi_chan/Mina-chan/Mina.jpg

As of now, she's bodyless, so it's not like I can take any more pictures of her... ><

    58. [IMG]

I knew it wasn't a great picture at the time, but it just cracks me up. I didn't OWN a camera and borrowed one from the school library. The name of the photo is "eatfood!" because the way I made the thing around his neck just looks like he's got a bib on. XD;;; Oh ghaleon, your first face-up and the first time I opened eyes. X3 <3

    59. [IMG]

Haha, I thought the posing was cool! I was trying to freak out a male friend who insisted my doll was over the top gay, so I decided to show him what was!

Thank god I know a little bit more about photography now! XD

    60. [IMG]
ughhh... I thought this was so awesome... ;___;'' Poor Deskri... First faceup ever.. e___e;; It shows... And that hair was sooo not working for him. D:
