Island Dolls Mini Discussion part 1

Oct 2, 2005

    1. [IMG][IMG]

I thought the similarities were open for discussion. Not sure if this dolly debate section was a proper place, so mods please move if you feel it necessary.

      Aren't these two similar?

Could Island doll have copied Iplehouse's "Amy" and did some modifications to make her not a copy? They're both MSD.

I sent this to the Mods and they'll decide if there's too many similarities that makes it a copy, however I thought it would be open for discussion here.

      What do you think?

    2. Besides the features being similar [the eyes are a bit different, but..] both face's have a similar roundness to them...hmmm...

Wow, I never even thought about this!:? Do you think it could be true?!

EDIT: Do the mods have a verdict? Copy or just, unfortunately for IslandDoll, coincidentally named and similar? O__O [When I first saw IslandDoll Amy I thought she was sooo cute, so I hope everything here turns out to be fine. >__<;;;]

    3. The only thing I see in common is a soft face with parted lips - the lips are even a slightly different shape at that. The jawline on ID's Amy is more square, her nose smaller and the spot below more defined, her eyes are a different shape. I think they are similar to a degree, but a copy? No.

    4. Besides the name and the size, there's nothing similar about these two. Island Doll's girl is more angular, has a completely different eye shape, and a much smaller nose than Iplehouse Amy.

If I were a new doll company, I would live in fear of one of these "copying" threads being made about my product. Do you realize how damaging an unproven accusation like this can be to a company? Unless it's completely obvious that one sculpt is a ripoff of another, PLEASE think hard about creating one of these threads.

    5. They're both msd size girls with wide faces, large eyes and partly open-ed mouths. Since the first two are characteristic of most msd girls, I don't think there's much similarity at all. We wouldn't even notice a similarity if they weren't named the same.

Maybe we should get together some care packages of English baby name books and send them to the doll companies.

    6. My sincere apologies for making any accusation in this statement of out-right rip-off copying, it was not my intent.

I do understand that in sculpting dolls one will come across similarities such as these.

Especially for new companies, they should be wary of their competitor-companies sculpts and watch out for things like similar styles of molds and names.

    7. No, they are very different, actually--the noses, chins, mouths, eyes, and jaw lines are all quite different. The doll on the right has a more rounded, softer look. Apart from both being sweet looking females and having the lips parted, they have little in common.

It's not uncommon for different companies to use some of the same sculpt names, especially when the names are common human ones--it doesn't mean anything. And as I don't see how the two dolls really look that much alike, I don't see how similar style is an issue here.

    8. Aside from their size (which is 1/4 standard), their names (which have no connection to sculpt), and the fact that you can see both of their teeth (which is not uncommon, especially in "little girl" sculpts), I see nothing similar about these dolls.

    9. I agree with what others have said... other than the fact that they're sweet-looking 1/4-sized girls, I don't see any similarity in the sculpt. The shape and placement of features is very different, and there's even a difference in head circumference if the measurements on the sites are correct. (Island Doll's girl takes 6-7 wigs, while Iplehouse's wears 7-8 wigs). The eye shape and placement is different on both sculpts as well.

The same name is likely just a coincidence. "Amy" is an extremely-popular girl's name in English-speaking countries (I should know... I was always "Amy H." in school because there was inevitably at least one other Amy in my classroom).

I agree that some healthy precautions are necessary and good, but sometimes I wish some more effort and research would go into the possibility before these kinds of threads are posted.

    10. She does resemble IH's Amy...maybe, with the right faceup, they could even play twins :pcake

    11. This is not really a debate, so I've moved it to the mini discussion subforum.

Personally I don't think ID Amy is a copy of IH Amy. If you're going to copy something, the first thing you'd change is the name. The spaces and proportions and volumes of the two faces are completely different.

    12. I'm interested in getting IH Amy as I have a daughter named Amy. Islanddoll Amy is different. The nose is a lot finer, the mouth curves up less. She looks to me like one of the chinese sculptors saw the IH Amy liked it and decided to make their own version. The body is also original. She doesn't look like a ripoff which would be identical. Islanddoll Amy is a pretty doll, but I still prefer Iplehouse Amy more.

    13. I think they look very different except the teeth showing and slight smile. The name is likely a coincidence - another Amy here, there are TONS of us around. I do wonder at the frequency of use of the name "Amy" by BJD companies. It was the most popular name in much of the 70's, but has fallen since then. I wonder if there's a reason it seems popular for BJD sculpts?

The only BJD sculpt I've seen named Amy that I've liked at all is still Souldoll's, incidentally.

    14. I think it migth be prudent to do thorough research before making any accusations of plagerism and copyright violations. In case of one genre of dolls, which do tend to look the same to non-enthusiasts already, it is best to have the physical items on hand. In this case, even from the photos, the two girls look completely different.

Seeing how there are only so many types of human faces suitable for doll making, I will not be surprised by similar face sculpts. Similar body sculpts, on the other hand...

    15. Actually, they are very similar - to the point where I think the sculptor may have been "inspired" by the Iple Amy.

It's definitely not a direct copy though, because there are many dissimilar features; but at the same time there definitely is a resemblance that I'd be unwilling to fully attribute to pure coincidence.

    16. Just wanted to share some info with future Island Doll Amy owners:

I inquired about Amy's wig size via JPopDolls. They told me she wears 6-7" wig. ;)

    17. Hiya, I have searched the forums and can't find any reference to this; Both Iplehouse and IslandDoll have minis called Amy. The sculpts are to my eyes remarkably similar. Can anyone shed any light on this? Are they the same doll? Are Iplehouse and Island doll related like Bobobie and Resinsoul? If I'm being thick and this has been discussed, PLEASE point me in the right direction - my search on Amy didn't throw up any results, which I find weird. Thanks All!

    18. Which "amy" are you particularly interested in finding? The search does not currently work with three-letter words, however there are work-arounds for it. What company are you interested in?

    19. Hmm, I don't think Iplehouse and Island Doll are related in any way. Even though they have similar sculpts, but I'm not 100% sure though.

    20. Island Doll is a Chinese company, and Iplehouse is a Korean company, so the chances of them having any relation is incredibly unlikely.

I think the similarities in the sculpt are merely coincidental, there are some subtle differences in the eye and mouth shapes that I can see.

    21. hi, no they are not related in any way, additionally, the resin is very different. On the sculpts, not really similar. I know it is very difficult from photos to see what a doll really looks like, but Amy Island Doll is a very slim MSD, closer to Nara in slimness.

    22. Thanks for this; I tended to prefer the Iplehouse, but I think I'm going to trawl the galleries... Grael, may I ask how the resin differs? Thanks!

    23. I'm still fairly new to BJDs and I recently ordered a Wallis Island doll. She looks like she's fairly slim and has somewhat of a large bust. Before I go making too many clothes for her, does any one know how well standard MSD sizes would fit?

    24. Luxour list her eyes as being 14mm, so I think that's what I'll be going for, though I think you can use 16mm too if you want a larger iris (though I'm a total newb, so it might not be wise to listen to me :P)

But yeah, it's super exciting! I'm also going for a 6/7 wig.

I'm not sure exactly what qualifies as a slim mini, she's around 1/4 size, so I thought she was a mini... But I'm not sure how to place the mature body :P A friend of me takes the height as their age, but with a figure like Wallis' I sort of doubt you can do that :P
Maybe some metallic fabric and tight bodysuits with armor stuff on. And a helmet.

I've made a waiting room thread for Island Dolls btw, though it's pretty empty right now ^^

Do you have names and hair/eyes and character and stuff ready?
I'm still working on my sci-fi idea, and I think her standard gear could fit that ok... Then I'll have to make some myself I think... There's too few sci-fi dolls around :P

    25. I'm going to buy my first doll. I think about Amy. I know that she is a little bit smaller than other MSD dolls. What companies clothes fits her (dollzone, angell studio is the easest to buy for me) ?

    26. Well, I thought I'd led my 2 cents here since I have an Island Doll Amy (not keeping her, but I can still help!). Generally, she is a slim, mature mini. I know IS's new girl has slightly different measurements, but I think they're close enough that they'd both be considered that. Clothing that's designed for Unoa's and such generally work, but stuff made for regular MSD's tend tends to be a bit big, so its a little hit or miss as far as what fits. Shoes are the same way since she has smaller than normal feet for her size. Also, 6-7 wigs can fit, but some might be alittle tight. If you know a brand runs small I'd say go the next size up.

    27. I think Wallis is a bit bigger than Amy, something like Amy being 43 cm and Wallis being 45, so their fit might be slightly different, though I doubt it's very much.
I've been looking at 7-8 wigs for my Wallis, but it might be too big... I guess I'll see once I get her.

    28. I heard some people who got the fullset Amy found her wig to be too big (it was a 7/8), but then again, I got her a 6/7 monique and its a pain to keep on her head because its so tight. Guess it just depends on the make of the wig?

    29. My beautiful girl came in and she definitly wears a 6/7 in Monique Gold~
She came with lovely gray eyes that I find rather large. They appear to be 16s and she should probably take 14s, right now she's wearing her old silicone eyes and I believe they are 13 and they are juuuuust a touch too small at the corners.
I'm out of dolly funds at the moment but once I get some I'll get grabbing her some eyes and possibly my other MSD too.

Edit: Answering my own question. She towers over my Ringdoll Kyo (Erath)! She's almost an inch taller than him, I love it!
      Also~ Pic Spam!

    30. I am getting an Island Doll Amy msd doll and am shopping for a wig for her. My problem is her head measures 17.5 cm or 6 7/8 inches. I'm not sure on the wig size to get her, a 6/7 or 7/8.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hope I put this in the right place, if not, sorry mods.:doh

    31. I briefly owned an Island Doll Amy. She swam in the 7-8" wigs I owned.

She fit perfectly in a 6-7" JPop wig, though. If you decide to buy 6-7", I recommend trying to find one that stretches (like JPop, Monique, etc).

I hope this helps! Congrats on your incoming girl!

    32. Any chance of any Island Doll Wallace owners putting up pics? I'm dying to see how cute he is in person ^_^

Also, does anyone know if it's possible to switch Amy's head onto Wallis' body?

...and Wallis' head onto Wallace's body? (She looks more like a boy sculpt to me...what can I say :))

    33. Speaking of Wallis~
      Random Del spam anyone?
      Don't mind if I do!

    34. Hello!! I just wanted to say that there is now a Island Doll wiki! If you guys want to update any information about it, go right ahead! X3 I hope I got everything correct~

I own a ID Emily and when I was looking through all the companies that sold ID, I fell in love with the MSD size~ I hope to get a girl eventually!

    35. As far as clothes go, I did a bit of research and I found that Ellowyne Wilde measurements were extremely close to ID Amy's (41cm) and fairly close to ID Wallace's (46cm) measurements. As such, I've been sewing up a storm using patterns from MHD Designs to get my dolls dressed for when they arrive (I've got both Amy and Wallace coming!) I will post pics when they arrive so that you all can see the fit. I'm certain that they will work well, but I'm pretty sure I'll have to do some fitting alterations too. I think that they will work on the bustier Wallis, Ivy, and Aggie (45cm) too, but I'll have to wait until I order Ivy to know for sure.

    36. There are Island Dolls at Junkyspot too. Could you update that? I'm not sure how to. http://junkyspot.com/obindex.html

    37. Yay! I guess I can sort of join this thread now! I just ordered a tan Lilith from Mint on Card. :) I can't tell from the pictures, but does Island doll use French resin? The dolls all seem to have a nice glow to them. :D Also if anyone has an Island Doll in tan, I'd love to see!

    38. I used to own an Amy, and they use environmental resin, which looks like French but its not supposed to yellow as quickly. One of my boys is made from the same stuff and its really pretty!

    39. Well, Ellen (Island Doll Amy) arrived today and she's just lovely!

As promised, here is a photo of her in some of the clothes I made for her based on Ellowyne Wilde Patterns from MHD Designs:

There are lots of details about the clothes and the fit if you follow through to flickr. I'm too tired right now to post details here, sorry. :sweat

    40. Thank you so much! Some of the pants turned out a bit loose, but I think if I just went slightly over the 1/4" seam allowance, they would fit perfectly. I may try to take them in a little, but they may fit my incoming Wallace perfectly, so I'm going to wait before I do any alterations. The length on them is fantastic though. The honeysuckle colored coat is a good fit, as it's meant to be a bit big, and the hat is a perfect fit over the wig.

    41. My handsome Thomas ( Island Doll Wallace ) arrived yesterday from Luxour Academy, and I wanted to show you guys what he looks like up close (if anyone is considering getting one). ;) I asked for the SD Eric faceup for him, and I'm quite pleased. He looks a bit less rakish than the default Wallace faceup (which is also very attractive in my opionion), and more natural.

Here is a photo of him in some of the clothes I made for him. These are also based on Ellowyne Wilde Patterns from MHD Designs. In fact, the coat is a short version of the honeysuckle pink one I've got on Ellen in the above photo. The long and short (literally), is the pants are too short and a bit tight around the hips. The turtleneck bodysuit fits good across the shoulders, but is too short in length. The coat and hat fit like a dream. I think if I add a couple or a few cm to the bodysuit and the length of the pants that they would both fit really well. If I skimp a bit on the seam allowance for the pants, they would fit perfectly around his hips.

    42. Hello ! I have recently seen "Cristal" (an elf :) ) on the Island Dolls website. Is there a new sculpt ? She looks very cute.
I will own soon a MNF Chloé, but I also like the posability of island dolls models.

Does the body color of Island Dolls match with Fairy Land normal skin ? Island Doll skin or normal skin or ... ????
I am looking for a body for a MNF head in normal skin and it would be super if it can fits ...

    43. So I got my girl last night (Tan Lilith)...I'm having mixed feelings. :( I mean, her sculpt is gorgeous and the resin is so nice I don't want to put her down...but the sculpt has teeth (which I like)...but they are painted like...eeeeeew! The teeth are white, but the spaces in between are reddish! She looks like she has zombie teeth and I'm terrified of zombies! Lol yeah I know it sounds childish, but....eeeeeeeew! I'm really freaked out by them! I'm going to have to send her to a faceup artist (or try to paint over the teeth myself). I actually really like her faceup...except the teeth. She looks like a hot Brazilian model...with zombie teeth!:...(

I really don't want to sell her...she's GORGEOUS! I'll have to post pics as soon as I get home if I have some sunlight!

    44. Here is Lilith!
Yes I decided to keep the sculpt name after I looked up the meaning: "of the night" and that was just what I was looking for! :)
The name's origin is Arabic so her ethnicity is going to be Egyptian. It was apparently the name of a demon in ancient Assyrian myths. >_<

    45. Lilith with 14mm eyes and natural lighting (the eyes gap a little so either have white eye putty handy or get 16mm small iris for this look).
This is much closer to how the tan resin looks in person. :) Very very pretty and photographs really well! :D

    46. Lol no problem! I think she poses really well actually! :D If I have time this weekend, I'll try to take some more pictures but I doubt it'll be much different from the websites...she poses wonderfully IMO! :) The resin is also very nice, it's smooth and had a decent weight to it. The tan (the only ID resin I've seen in person) photographs really nicely in natural light, but looks very yellow in artificial light (probably because the artificial light is yellow and the resin is translucent). I really like the sculpt too...just the teeth bother me a little...the gap between the upper front teeth is off center and it's driving me crazy! I'm sure that can be fixed by painting the teeth all white instead of painting the gaps a different color to highlight the gaps. Other than the teeth I just LOVE her! Feel free to ask any other questions too if I didn't cover something! :)

    47. Thank you :) You pretty much told me everything I needed to know ;)
Just which eye size fits best, according to you?

    48. Hmm...well I tried both 14mm and 16mm...the 14mm give a sharper look like the blue eyes she's wearing in post #89, they do gap a tiny bit. I like 16mm the best (post #88). I have her wearing 16mm green volks eyes right not and they look really nice, I'll post a picture when I get back home tonight. :)

    49. No problem at all! :)
Here is Lilith again! This time in 16mm "normal looking" Volks eyes:
These are my favorite so far! :)

    50. So quiet in here. 0_0 I have more Lilith spam, and I hope people aren't sick of her already. >_<
Guys I'd love to see your dolls too!
Hmmm...why do I have Sting's "Desert Rose" stuck in my head now? Either that or "A Whole New World" XD

    51. Lol yeah Shukaku looks a little like my Lati Blue Rei (actually, maybe he looks more like Rucas now that I think about it). Either way I'm not sure if I'm safe or in trouble. I love the sculpt. My Rei is NS...although getting him a twin or even a look-alike in a different color seems really appealing right no. Lol!

Sorry I don't have any Amy spam (she's adorable though!).

Lilith now has a minion (She can't be a Demon Queen without a minion..or two...0_0).
Lilith would like you to meet Orion (BBB Sprite boy).
He's having a really hard time adjusting to the human world so Lilith wants to get him a friend (more like another piece of eye candy for herself). 0_0 She scares me. :doh I wouldn't have her any other way! :D

    52. Thank you guls207~!
I love your Lilith by the way and it was actually her that reminded me that so much can be done with these girls!
I got a few more shots of my Chantal and I really like this one. I'm going to link it instead of posting it as it contains perky resin breasts. *L* http://i1182.photobucket.com/albums/x447/MoonCaller/Chantal/BlindOne3.jpg

The rest of the shoot can be found on my blog. ^^

    53. Hypercurve, Chantal is a Wallis. Actually she was one of the first couple on the board. ^^ She's got a few
problems like uneven legs and I find her resin a little thin for my tastes but she's a sweet girl and the company photo's really don't do her justice.
