Is Your Most Yellowed Possession a BJD?

Feb 11, 2017

    1. I just realized that the most yellowed thing I own is not, in fact, a BJD but a serger.

      Here it is:
The bottom trim and the lever that moves the presser foot are the color it was originally.

What's the most yellowed thing you own? Is it a BJD or something else?

    2. Haha, mine is my Sega Dreamcast! I moved out of a place in a bit of a hurry, and in the 2/3 years I was away the Dreamcast was left in direct sunlight from a window (not that THAT much sunlight got in). Amusingly, the console unit and one controller were a little bit more shielded, and look more simply "well-loved". One controller was directly in sunlight, and it is that particularly unpleasant yellow colour that many white sun-damaged plastics turn. :XD:

I'm not really fussed what colour it is, so long as it works! So it's in storage correctly now, not to keep it from sunlight but to protect it from dust and the like. XD

    3. @nattherat

Mine's uneven too (the front is closer to its original color)!

    4. Ooh I like this thread! XD
Hmmm while Shiwoo is extremely yellow (he's 10 years old), some of my old action figures from elementary school are extremely yellow as well. I have a few Digimon action figures where you can see how the different types of plastic on them yellowed/aged differently.

    5. @Wolfie Pie

Yeah--I realized that the different parts of my serger are different plastics that way. Surprise!

It's kind of impressive how stable some are and how unstable others.

    6. My Unoa hybrid has a SUPER yellow headback, but I think the prize actually goes to my desk... there's a spot on inside where I used to keep a box up against it and it looks almost white in comparison to the rest. Thankfully it's a light, yellow-toned wood to start with.

      • x 1
    7. My serger has yellowed, and I have a Passap E6000 knitting machine that has yellowed. There are some people that have used peroxide cream to give the knitting machines a spa treatment to change them back to nearly their original color.

      • x 1
    8. @Hamadryad

I'm not too concerned about the machine--I'm pretty mean to my equipment, so something else catastrophic will break before the plastic has a chance to degrade in the light. (I'm actually not sure, with how difficult plastic is to break down, whether it would even happen in my lifetime.)

DOA members just constantly post ways to avoid yellowing dolls, and I have been so careful with mine for this reason, but in the meantime, I've managed to terribly yellow something else! It's impressive.

    9. hmm, that's tough. It might be my bjds! Not because of the sun, though, just from resin settling over time. It's hard to tell though, since it's been many years, and my oldest two are Dollzone's old "white" resin, which was actually ivory to begin with. but the resin has changed on all of them at least a little.

I have a Dreamcast too, but has never really seen the sun. it used to be hooked up in the furnished basement, then it got packed away as I moved around. Lol I can't think of anything else that is white. (wait my Wii is, but it still is.)

OH. I have an old computer keyboard I still use. It was off-white but has become a darker beige over the years. Needs to be cleaned, but it still works!

haha, this is a really funny thread! xD

    10. I don't think I notice yellowing on other things as readily, so I couldn't say. I did recently get a new action figure of Roxas from Kingdom Hearts and when I stuck him next to the 10+ year old one I bought in college I realized how much the paint had faded. His little sea salt ice cream is now super faded sky blue! XD

    11. I think mine is my white PS3 controller. The top half is quite yellowed compared to the snow-white bottom section of the controller and the console it matched XD

    12. Ooh ok - mine are probably these... And all the other examples are likely several other second hand LPs in my collection actually! The two yellowed examples are both 41 year old UK First Pressings (second hand, gods know how many owners before me since these things are significantly older than I am - they came like this though suffice it to say the discs themselves are near pristine, I store all of my LPs in an LP-case as a matter of course... Gods I miss that era when LPs were my little secret, the number of Bowie gems I picked up for less than a fiver each!) next to a modern repro for comparison:

...The second photo is more accurate to how severe the discolouration is, but the first shows the contrast better - eh you get the idea!

    13. My teeth. :wiggle

    14. @phanuel

I know the feeling--I'm missing half of a front tooth from tripping on Christmas lights in middle school, so the other half is plastic.

I'm an huge tea drinker so the seam gets discolored if I don't really scrub at it.

It's worse from the back (the front plastic has been resurfaced to match the opacity of my tooth--apparently my teeth have become less transparent with age--how weird!), so I have to continually remind my dentist not to hack at it when I go in for a cleaning.

It was only supposed to last 3-5 years and I've had it for around 10--I'm worried a new one won't last nearly as long!

    15. @americanseamstress, Well, my teeth are all my own but my daughter broke a front tooth while in her teens and our local dentist never fixed it correctly, even after several tries. It not only looked off but caused her pain. We finally got her veneers and it's made such a difference.

    16. @phanuel

Im glad she found something that works!

    17. The most yellowing thing I own is probably my food processor. The plastic casing is yellowed with age, which isn't surprising since the mixer is older than me. My parents picked it up at some point in the mid 70s and it's still used for whipping cream despite the fact it's louder than a small aircraft when running (I tend to switch it on, run from the kitchen, and return to turn it off).

    18. Oh wow, my most yellowed possessions are some of my old Transformers, especially Skyfire. (Though some of the Robotech toys may be a close second.) Fortunately for my toys, a lifetime of photo-sensitivity on my part and a series of north-facing rooms have kept most of my precious belongings in the comforting darkness. XD

    19. @Osaka

If by Starfire, you mean the comic book character, I have some great memories of watching Teen Titans with my sister when we were younger (and Code Lyoko and Samurai Jack--which I've heard is coming back). Starfire was her favorite!

And I feel you with the photosensitivity. My college roommates used to joke that I was a vampire, for how much I avoided (really still avoid) sunlight.

      @Spuggey

This isn't technically mine, but there's an old windows computer on my floor at my jop that can't be upgraded because it's hooked up to a really old piece of equipment. It sounds like a plane landing when you have the misfortune of trying to restart it.

Everyone is always paging the last person to log on (the only way to log on using another username is if everyone is logged off or to shutdown the computer) because they're afraid to break it with a restart!

    20. @americanseamstress --No, no! XD Skyfire was an Autobot, and a source of controversy in the toy and anime community, because he was a straight-up copy of the Valkyrie fighters (Varitechs for the American Robotech audience) from Super-Dimensional Fortress Macross. Anyway, when I was a kid, 30-something odd years ago, Robotech was my number one love, but I also deeply loved Transformers (and really anything with giant robots), and so I dearly wanted a Skyfire. I finally tracked one down at a reasonable price when I was in college, but he had been played with pretty hard, and he's got some wicked yellowing. He's also now outnumbered by the number of actual Valkyries I have now. @u@ (I don't watch Teen Titans, so I wouldn't know any of them from the other, except I think Robin?? Is he a Teen Titan? I thought I saw him when my son was watching Teen Titans... Eh. I'm a Marvel kid. My DC knowledge is exclusively what I learned from Superfriends and Batman: The Animated Series. XD )

    21. @Osaka

Sorry! I misread it as STARfire, who is a character in Teen Titans! (This is what I get for answering this on my phone late at night.)

I'm not familiar with Transformers or Super Dimensional Fortress Macross.

STARfire is the ginger one. She had a super outgoing personality.

    22. @americanseamstress --Quite all right! ^3^

Transformers and SDF Macross were middle-ish 1980s, which emphasizes how terrifically long I have been a robot nerd. (Voltron and Tranzor Z were two more imports that I was very fond of in those days, and still am fond of, really.) My Voltron toys have held up pretty well, all things considered.

    23. Our microwave is butter cream and white now. It's very old for a microwave, over a decade (if it ain't broke, don't replace it, lol). Before I got bjds, I didn't think much of it, now I look and say 'See? Yellowing!" Humm, too bad I can't give it a good soak to lighten it up.

I do think my 10 yr old Bjd has to be the most yellowed thing I own. It's not a bad color, just a yellow buttery shade. My Japanese action figure collection seems to be ok, but they are less than five years old. It will be interesting to see what they are like in another five years.

    24. @kurogane

It is interesting how different plastics age. My 16 year old sewing machine is off-white, but my 5 year old serger is also butter yellow. While it could be due to the fact that my serger sat in the path of light from a window for 4 years, while I've taken my sewing machine everywhere with me, it is impressive.

    25. @americanseamstress now that I've been made more aware of what stuff around the house has yellowed, I found a stapler that has some yellowed parts. The microwave is under full spectrum lights so that explains its change, but the stapler is kept out of any light in a dark corner of the desk. It must be what type of plastic is used and how stable it is over time. Makes me nervous with all the new plastics in my action figures. Will they last, or deteriorate? Best not to dwell on it!

      • x 1
    26. @kurogane
I have a feeling that a lot of it would have to yellow (probably deeper than sunlight can reach from the surface, assuming the plastic is opaque) in order to damage the structural integrity of the stapler, but perhaps I'm an optimist.

    27. I have a super yellowed model horse. He's got a dark body, but white highlights, which in his case are actually tan highlights. :XD:

He's been sitting on the end of the shelf nearest the window and sloooowly lightening up, but of course I don't want to go too far the other direction, and end up sun-damaging him instead.

    28. @redsixwing

Is he a Breyer? I used to collect (mostly play) with them as a kid. I haven't noticed that they have yellowed, but the individual sculpts are discontinued, and they must be 10+ years old now.

    29. @americanseamstress Yes he is - a Running Stallion from the late 60s- early 70s. I bought him second (or nth) hand, so no idea his exact age. It takes quite a while for that plastic to yellow, and if they're stored in open air, they generally just... don't? At least, not that I've noticed.

It's pretty common in the model horse hobby to sun-whiten plastic models that have yellowed over time, but fortunately it doesn't seem to be as big of a problem as it can be with resin.

My last were Cupid and Arrow from 2002, but I have no idea who my first are (a yellow male--possibly palomino--and a salmon colored female; I called them--creatively--lemon and peach).

    31. @americanseamstress That's cool! I remember seeing the release for Cupid and Arrow - it's actually what prodded me into finding out the model horse hobby is online. There's a really good ID site if you feel like going to the effort.. uh, is it okay to post links here?

My first... well, my first that's really mine, not second-hand - is a black-and-white pinto Five Gaiter. He isn't yellowed at all, but also is a couple of decades younger than the guy I posted about.

    32. @redsixwing

I can find some sculpts that look similar on the identify your breyer website, but none which are the right color and/or released at the right time (90s and early 2000s). I'll have to spend more time when I can actually look at the horses I have.

I may have the black pinto as well, or something similar.

Edit: This is lemons sculpt, but I can't find one that's the right color.

    34. Yes! Another Robotechie!! You are the first I have seen on here. I started watching Robotech in 5-6th grade and my first crush was Rick Hunter.when they took it off the air I actually wrote HarmonyGold!! I later collected comics ( pre Viz) books figures art music Anything Skull Squardron and Macross. I even had a skyfire which looked like Rick Hunters first Veritech. It was all metal too. Anyway nice to meet you and I just dated myself big time I know. ( goes away feeling ooooold)

    35. @Aichan

I don't know if the computer I learned on was quite that old, but my school made some deal with Apple when they were just starting, so all the computers were Macs. I remember playing KidPix and Oregon Trail on a computer that looked like that (early 2000s and onward).

    36. I was in 4th grade when I first started watching, and I was (okay, still am) desperately in love with Roy Fokker. ^3^ Max Sterling was a close second for me. <3 Fun fact: my ex-husband was in Navy aviation, and joined VF-103, The Jolly Rogers, who were the visual inspiration for Skull Squadron, the black and gold color scheme and skull-and crossbones logo--they were stationed in Japan for many years before coming back stateside. Ex and I were not the only Robotechies connected with that squadron. XDD I spent a great many years hitting up comic stores to fluff out my Robotech collection! I've got a stack of the Palladium table-top RPG books too.

So nice to meet you too! ^3^

    37. Haha that is great! I am so glad to know I was not the only one to have a crush. It was also the first cartoon to ever make me bawl like a baby ( Goodbye big brother) when Roy died. Therevwere so many adult themes in it but nothing was skanky. ( other then Lynn Kyle and Minmei's relationship) my husband is asian and named Hikaru aka Rick and I reassure him that I love him for him. haha
He has watched the series too and appreaciates it as well. My least favorite of course is the Robotech Masters. I also was not to crazy about some of the liberties the books took. But with the 2 ghost writers doing them well..
I just do not want them to do a live action movie of Robotech ( Toby Maguire owns the rights and was going to do one but has not talked about it to much) i think they will mess it up & I would hate that!!! They have alreadt hijacked my childhood Transformers, Gi Joe Etc.

    38. Oh wow yes Kidpix! I had that on my mac classic when i was in high school. I never played oregon trail or carmen san diego which seemed pretty popular. You are fortunate you had macs in your school!

    39. @Aichan

Yeah, all I can think is that the school must have made a huge deal with Apple, to make them worth it over PC. When the school finally got rid of the bigger monitor, and went for more of a flat screen, I remember wishing that I could recycle them into a hamster cage.

There was a YouTuber when I was in middle school who had a dwarf hamster in one now it's probably a good thing I didn't do that, because it probably would have been to small. It did get me into dwarf hamsters briefly though--I had two: Dustbunnie and Niblet.

    40. I have such a love-hate relationship with the novels. XD And I absolutely agree--no live action!!

I'm hoping to get a Granado Enoch (or if they do a vinyl version of Enoch) to be Roy. <3 I've been waiting for too long for just the right sculpt to come along for him, and he needs to come home! ^3^

    41. Ah, all this talk about Robotech! Gosh, I remember watching it just before I had to leave for school in the morning. It's what started me on Japanese anime. I still have the two original color artwork books from the late 1980's.

    42. Yes it"s always what is best for the animal and I could see how a hamster would need more room to move around. At the pet store I always visit the hamsters. Those are really cute names for them too. How long do they usually live? Are they a female or male pair? I have dogs cats and fish and forest people I feed outside like squirrels, chipmunks, crows. Foxes, Doves chickadees blue jays& the like.

    43. That would be really cool. I would love to see it if you ever did it. I had the pvc figures of Lisa and Rick but sold them like a lot of my collection over the years. The barbie type dolls that they came out with were just horrible looking so I never got them.

    44. Very nice! I remeber when I started working in high school going to Japan town in San Francisco and spending all my check on anime & robotech stuff.

    45. @Aichan

I've gone way off topic, but oh well, it's Brigadoon! Campbell's and Chinese dwarf hamsters live 3 years, but Roborovskis live 5.

Mine were Campbell's and a male/male pair. My sister, though, had a pretty rough experience: she wanted a pair after I got them, and my dad went to some random pet shop and got her two, with the promise that if they were different sexes, the store would take them back.

A week later, surprise!, baby hamsters, and we went back to the shop, only to discover it had completely shut down overnight. We kept separating hamsters into random jars and boxes, trying to separate males and females, and my mom went to another store to see if they would take them.

They would...but only five at a time. My poor mom was calling everyone in the school directory and driving five hamsters up to the pet shop each time they ran out, and in the meantime, we kept having more hamsters (up to 25-30, I would guess), because it took us a while to catch on to the fact that they were hiding them, and the pups will have babies with the parents if you leave them together for too long.

Then, my sister discovered she was allergic to hamsters...

It was a mess. By the time the holiday was over, I was the only family member with hamsters.

    46. @americanseamstress oh wow! Sounds like an overrun of hamsters! I'd love to have a dwarf hamster myself, but our cat would obsess and I couldn't leave the hamster all alone in my dark bedroom. Still, they are so cute. I had gerbils when I was a kid. No babies though.

@Aichan lucky you to be so close to Japan Town in SFO! I have been there once. I bet it's even more of a money black hole now!

    47. Probably...my spare NES. My main NES is playable and I still have the original box with styrofoam and everything, so that one stays in the box when I'm not playing it and it looks brand new. The spare was picked up secondhand, possibly from a smoking home, and it's VERY yellow.

    48. Oh my gosh!! What an experience! That sounds very stressful but I am glad it is over for you and your family! I knew rodents breed quickly but I had no idea THAT quickly!

We had a similar experience with our goldfish. We had moved them to our pond to " cycle" the pond, get it ready for koi. We put in some water liliies . The goldfish mated and had fish " fry" babies but we didn't know. It was only till I saw something that was not our 2 main goldfish in the pomd that we realized what happened.

We took out the plants and got all the babies out ( we had a waterfall and large filter at one end of the pond and we didn't want them to get sucked in and killed plus they need special baby food. So we had all these tanks and all these fish. When they got a little older we took some to different fish stores . Then later the same thing happened with our koi and we found out that fish like to lay eggs in water lillies and any other vegetation if its avaible. So we had to move the plants & lesson learned!

    49. It was nice but I recently moved out of state and now I see a direct connection between saving money and not living to near all those goodies!

    50. @Aichan

I think it was a combination of inexperience with hamsters and quick breeding (if they're like mice, it's every 21 days). They hid their pups originally in their hamster house, so my sister didn't notice until they started waking around (15-20ish days).

Then she didn't properly separate males and females--oops!

Baby fish are cute too--we had that happen with freshwater tanks and zebrafish
