I know these are generic labels, but I think it'd be interesting to see. Post your pics! If you have dolls that are each, post both!
Most of my dolls are more peppy than gothic, but my newest girl fits the gothic label because she's a ghost. Can you tell which one she it? xD
Mine is currently, I wouldn't say preppy... but yeah... even though she is supposed to look completely different
Ooh, this seems like a fun game! Most of my dolls might be seen as fitting in the "Gothic" genre, but that's just because I'm a lazy bum and never complete any of their outfits anymore. If I was a good owner and actually took the time to attempt sewing anything decent for them, their style would be more like if Final Fantasy XII had a baby with Silent Hill's monsters. DX My only BJD girl is more into Cyberpunk though; but she's the ideal of Japanese/anime's vision of cyberpunk as opposed to Western-ravers concept of "cyberpunk," aesthetically speaking, at least. This last one is a cosplay of MGS's Psycho Mantis, but I think the style would work well with any of my dolls, even my cyberpunk girly up there.
This is so fun to consider Remmy is definitely on the preppy side: Henry (the blonde) and Rabbit (white hair) are more on the gothic side, and Gordon is probably punk/gothic G: Gossie also Harold and Verne (it won’t share my photo for him...) are both gothic and preppy lol I apologize for my pic spamming haha
I love this aesthetic! Their outfits are amazing! And I'm a big fan of cyberpunk too! (more of the western definition, but I'm being persuaded to be a fan of Japanese cyberpunk now!)
So cool! You have quite a mix, and they are all so unique from one another! Harold is my fave! (don't tell the others)
Woah! Awesome characters! The background makes this photo so expressive! I wonder what will happen next! Thanks for sharing!
Preppy is a very American-centric term, as far as I can figure, and (not being American) I'm not really sure I really understand what it means... One of my dolls leans towards Goth, but specifically if the concept of Goth had existed in the Victorian era: Phige (RML R20J/CustomHouse) in her purple suit by guyelfkin, on Flickr The rest are just kids. Mostly the SD sized crew would look right at home in a Victorian or Edwarian nursery (the "goth" girl is one of the cousins in that family), a couple are 1920's girls, the Slim-Minis and In-Betweenies are generic modernish kids (except one is a hippie), the Mini's are largely Victorian, the Tinies have both vintage and modern style wardrobes suitable for pre-schoolers, the Teenie-Tines and Pukis are mostly otherworldy beings who dress however they like, and Daisy Bacon (the biggest, being a Lusion) is very firmly Victorian (although she'll have a Viking costume at some point since she has a scale copy of a Viking chair... but then again, most of the others have some sort of other-period costumes to play dressup in too). I should also point out that the majority of my dolls are children under the age of 13, with a few exceptions (the "Goth" girl is 14, the eldest girl in that family is 18, the hippy slim-mini girl is unspecified late teens/early 20's - the "eldset" of all my BJDs - and the other slim minis are generically teens of unspecified age, and of a style best described as average, verging on "girlie-glam" in one case, althoughshe's currently playing dress-up in a Medieval gown for reasons known only to herself, while the hippie is looking unusually glam in a sequinned red silk evening gown and heels) Teddy
My dolls have very different styles that reflect their own role She's on the gothic side... But she not...
I do have one little resin goth-boy over here... but so far no serious preppies. I may have to get Ptolemaeus to cosplay a prep for Halloween this year.
Preppy. All of them, save maybe one, prefer pastels and such, and even the one that does isn't very gothic. Here's Elliot:
Thorn is definitely a Goth. I mean, he's a black-clad assassin demon. How could he not be? Moonlight by bickaberry, on Flickr
Oh, dear -- a friend of mine once walked into my house and asked, "Why are ALL your dolls preppy?" I don't think every single one of them is, but Pen definitely fits that category.
Well, I guess it would depend on which doll I was talking about. I have mostly rock stars, but a couple of them would qualify as Goth. Manfred is definitely not only Goth, but a German Goth to boot! Manfred in regular clothes 1 by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Tielo, is also a German Goth. But then again, he's a vampire. And yes, that's Manfred wearing the pikachu kigurumi. Hey, it was Halloween. Tielo and Manfred Halloween IKEA Meetup 2019 by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Orrell, is somewhat Gothic, but being British, I'm not sure if there's a such thing over in England. Orrie being spunky by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Bettie Page (yes, that Bettie Page), being "the Queen of Pinups" is a sex pot, plain and simple. Bettie Mae Page and chopsticks by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Tohma is a rock star, but also a businessman, so I suppose he's more a preppy-type. Seguchi Tohma, Dream of Doll Dream of Idol Luke by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Adrastos is a genius, but also a professor, so he's definitely a preppy-type. Adrastos relaxing by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Shuichi is also a rock star, but he has his own style. Shuichi, lead singer of Bad Luck ('Gravitation' by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr I have more BJDs (17 in total so far), but after being out of the hobby for a while, I need to take updated pics on everyone else. Ryu
Wow! You have an amazing collection! They are all so unique, and very sharply dressed! I really like how you described each of them, I can really sense their characters. My favorite is Tohma, but don't tell the others that, haha!
Well, if you ever decide to watch the series Gravitation, you would know that Tohma is always a sharp dresser! And I promise, I won't tell the others! I'm going to try and take updated pics of more of my Crew soon, so expect them to show up on this thread! Ryu
Awwww, that's too bad, @MoonLight Wolf. I take it you don't have a camera on your phone? I have added a few new members to my Crew, as well as showing some more of my older ones. Hraban is a definite 1980s Goth. He even has a Siouxsie and the Banshees-style hairdo to prove it. 20200510_023105 by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Edgar Poe Allan is Goth, of course. He's a bat. 20200513_010254 by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Ichi-chan is a prep. But then again, he's only five years old. Ichi-chan got a few Yule presents early by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Alucard is definitely a Goth, since he's the original vampire. Alucard from Hellsing by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Twyla is pretty preppy, when she's not wearing her 1950s-style dresses. 2020-03-15_12-37-19 by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Chiyoko is a Gothic Lolita. 20200630_183902 by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr Ritsuka and Soubi (on borrowed bodies) are preppy. Ritsuka and Soubi 1 by Ryuichi Sakuma, on Flickr I have more dolls, (21 full bodies, with two more on the way), but I'll show them in a different post. Ryu
I do but it comes out looking really fuzzy :/ she also doesn't currently have any outfits XD But that will be her aesthetic
If I have to pick, then I give you The Dread Vampire Kyle, ok so his name is not as Goth as his soul. Kyle is both my nerdiest, and Gothest character/doll. (Also his shirt says "Eat Me" there is a running joke of monsters trying to eat or bite this poor boy that dates back to his turning.) In my hoard/collection I got both Gothic styled dolls and preppy styled dolls though. Heck Nigel one of my newest boys, is technically both. I am waiting for a clothing order that is in shipping so I can finish his default look, which will be a school uniform in dark colors to add to his Gothic yet in prep-school look.
SWEET! I can't wait to see them! What a great name, @Tippetarius! And to add to that, Kyle being food.... I can't wait to see Nigel, I bet he looks cool. Ryu
Wow! So many wonderful dolls, their outfits are pretty amazing! I really love Hraban's pants! (Wish I had a pair of my own) And Twyla is so gorgeous! Is that a crochet top she's wearing?
Thank you! I made Hraban's pants, it was a bit tough lining up the stripes, but I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. Twyla's top was one I bought from Iplehouse years ago. I really like it! Ryu
I've got both! Autumn is my goth girlie and Brooke is my preppy, Barbiecore gal PXL_20240106_193016221.PORTRAIT by Scrunch, on Flickr
Lucy is definitely a goth! She's more of the romantic and Victorian kind of goth, but sometimes, she is a little bit of a deathrock goth. Out of all of my dolls, she is the only goth. I wouldn't say any of the others are preppy.
Well... He's currently naked but he will be goth when I'm done with him I love seeing everyone's outfits! Where do you guys buy your goth clothes from??
Michi is preppy... but I do think she could wear gothic lolita for instance. Billie is certainly gothic. Nuoyi def has a preppy side... but she also wears a lot of other casual styles so it's hard to pin down! Asa can do both (goth; prep) Vickie is her own secret third thing?
