40โ€“49cm Dolls Iris - my first MSD girl

Nov 6, 2014

    1. Iris is the longest running project I ever did - mainly because after I started out almost 3 years ago she spent a long long time in a box at the bottom of the drawer... But when I had some free time a few months ago I dug her out and had been messing around every now and then since.

I treat her as a learning prop for future projects, really. I made far too many mistakes right from the beginning, some of which might make her even un-castable. I sculpted parts separately which made it difficult to achieve a nice body line and fit parts together, some of her elastic channels are angled, the joints turned out far simpler than what I planned etc. But I think that's only more reasons to finish her - get all the wrong ideas out of my system or something :D Though I already learned a ton just by browsing this forum.

The photos are a bit outdated, I already started on some changes I highlighted on the sketch below. I hope I'll have some time to document them this weekend. I enlarged the hip balls and cut the torso but it all needs a lot of refining. I'm not sure about most of my solutions - I used complete spheres as joints, so that the limbs can be rotated easily, but it probably means they're going to rotate on their own when you don't want them to... Especially in the hips, they're giving me a lot of trouble overall. There are spheres in the shoulders too. I'll probably think them over once all the parts are roughly finished.

Thanks for looking and of course you're more than welcome to voice any remarks that come to mind :)

    2. oh i love the feel of her! she looks very gentle ^^

the shoulder joint looks like it may not work to well, like she would not be able to rase her arms vertically?

    3. Wow that's a killer waist! She looks very graceful so far. I hope you're able to finish her. My first attempt was also an inhabitant of deep drawers (orz) for 2-3 years. It's ok to make mistakes. Practice makes it perfect? Do show us your progress when you can

    4. Sleep of Reason, thank you! "Practice makes it perfect" - that's what I tell myself :D I'll keep on working and try to keep this thread updated.

Thanks, du-hast! She is able to hold her arms outwards, it just doesn't look very graceful ^^' My primary plan was to cut out the torso sockets so that she could move the arms to the front and back as well, but maybe I need to rethink it?

    5. Hey, you could look up the less conventional ways people use for the shoulder sockets (i think your goal is to improve the movement rather than have an arm that just rotates around am I correct?) Is the ball joint separate from her arm? If it is, it'd give about the same range as the most commonly used shoulder-and-arm piece we see the most around.
For ex, some doll makers use a round piece so the doll can "shrug" slightly uwu; You can try the sockets first, since they take a lot less trouble to add on the project, and work from there.
A lot of joints take a lot of re-doing and rethinking (in my case at the very least)

    6. ohhh i see that's an interesting shoulder joint! i suppose this can go 2 ways, you can attach the ball to the arm or to the waist piece (if i am making sense) to make it look nicer when she razes her arms

through i think if you make the ball a little bigger you could even leave it as is!

    7. She looks very nice, especially with the modifications you planned :) I like her body shape and her dreamy expression

Concerning the joints, most of them are usually spheres, except the knees
If you want to keep the shoulder ball separate, I made a drawing as a suggestion, this would allow for a more natural look with the arms raised ^^

    8. I can't believe I haven't updated this thread in over a year! Especially since I didn't abandon Iris, she's just been on hiatus for past 6 months while I worked on a new project. But I'll be coming back for sure, I already have a few changes in mind; different shape of legs, face refinement, new hands and maybe feet... And I already designed a new head ;>

I also took Earill's advice on arms, it's a definite improvement and I'm very thankful!
