Lost/Damaged Iplehouse; question about dolls ordered in the past few months.

Jun 7, 2010

    1. Well, this is my best guess on the most appropriate place to post this question. I'm looking to see if anyone else has had dolls arrive to them in a similar condition ordered within the period where Iplehouse got behind. Read on for more details, but I will start off by saying there is no permanent damage that I have been able to find--which is why I have not immediately contacted the company.

I just received my Mars today, ordered without a faceup. He was ordered in that nice period where Iplehouse got behind, so it's been almost two months to get him. I've been noticing that a lot of corners were cut in producing him ... which I chalk up to the company hastening production to catch up.

Now it didn't botherme too much until I got to his face. There are some rather rough patches in it where he appears to have been sanded at some point but it was never smoothed down (I can actually see the fine scratches you sometimes get with lower grade sandpaper before finishing polish in these places). I was wondering if anyone else was noticing things like this or if maybe I should contact Iplehouse and ask what is going on.

(There are rough patches in other places as well as seams that look partially sanded--though I've never known IP to really sand seams before. And a spot behind one of his ears looks really rough and as if there might be some resin build up from where it was not sanded properly. He basically rained resin dust when I unpacked him. Now this didn't even particularly bother me, as it is not unusual for dolls to end up with resin dust trapped in their joints .... By the time I got him out he was covered in resin dust and flakes on several parts of his body--I don't know if this is from what came out of his joints or if it was already there. Either way it was an alarming amount of debris.)

I'm fairly certain it'd be easily fixed with some fine sandpaper--there's not any true damage, this problem is more just a lack of finishing properly--but I'm not really 100% confident in my ability to do it. So I'm currently thinking on whether or not I want to take that risk or look at other options available to me.

But yeah, all I'm posting for is to try to ascertain if this is an isolated incident or not (if it is an isolated incident then it gives me a different set of options). Please don't post here if you do not have relevant information, especially if you're just going to post drama/negativity about this situation or Iplehouse. I am not looking for opinions on what I should do, so I have not posted any photos of what I am talking about. All I am interested in is if anyone else has noticed Iplehouse doing a rush job to their dolls.

    2. Actually someone did say that here (last post on the page). Now I'm worried about my Asa. :shudder Thanks for reporting!

    3. My Asa arrived with fingerprints in three places because they were captured in when the face up was sealed. I can't provide pictures because we tried- they won't show up on camera. You have to tilt and move her head to hit the light just right in order to see them.

      She also arrived with this:

The groove they make for their Iplehouse tag in the back of the head wasn't big enough or vice versa, but they went ahead and stuck it on anyway.

    4. Because I ended up noticing more problems the more I actually looked, I actually have taken some photos of my head and reported it on Iplehouse's Doll Hospital board. Now I just have to wait for a reply.

Because people do seem to be looking at the thread, here are the photos I took:

(linked because they were a little larger than I would normally post on the boards.

kadepie, if you haven't already you should still try reporting on Iplehouse even without being able to get photos of the faceup damage. Also, have you tried putting the head directly under a bright light, tilting it to the right angle, and photographing? I was actually able to pick up some of the rough texture on my Mars' face in some of my own photos doing this. It might work for the faceup.

Edit: Oh, I guess I should say that I have revised my initial statement. There is definitely damage to the headcap when I bothered to take a close look. It's chipped and also fits poorly.

    5. Kitazawa- I was just wondering if you had gotten a reply from IH?

    6. Wow this is scary... I hope my Kamau doesn't come like that. I mean it's not like I could sand an flaws away, it would ruin his colour...

I'm very curious as to whether you got a reply from them yet too Kitazawa. I'd really love to hear that they have or are at least working on getting these issues sorted for you.

    7. I actually have got a response, though I have not yet decided how I want to respond to it. I have very mixed emotions concerning it and have been waiting for them to clear up enough that I do not say something I will regret. I have screen capped both my message to Iplehouse and the response they gave:

      My message: http://house-of-glass.net/iple/iple01.png

      Iplehouse's Response: http://house-of-glass.net/iple/iple02.png

I do not personally feel that this is an adequate response to the issue, but others may feel differently. This is why I have chosen to just post the messages verbatim and allow people to draw their own conclusions.

    8. Wow. I, for one, don't think it's appropriate for Iplehouse to assume you are into customization when they sold you what was supposed to be a finished doll. Store credit doesn't really solve the problem . . . I mean, they don't even sell sandpaper. :sweat

My Asa came today, and luckily she has none of these problems. She does, however, have the wrong faceup (I ordered A, they sent B). :doh I hope I get a better response than you did!

    9. I hope that you get a better response as well. :<

As it is, I do dabble into customization (I paint all my own dolls, for one), but my results with sandpaper have been mixed and so I do not plan to do this myself. I've already approached a customizer for a quote, and am in the process of saving the funds to have him sanded by someone who knows what they are doing.

    10. Seconding that WOW! Pretty bad of them to assume that an unfinished doll is your problem rather than theirs, and that it's worth 20 store points? I firmly believe with the pictures, they should have at least offered to send you a new head.

The red IH sticker fell off completely yesterday when I was changing Asa but if they pretty much blew off Kitazawa's Mars' problems, they certainly aren't going to be worried about the back of Asa's head.

Good luck chaos_zebra- I hope they fix their mistake!

    11. Yeah I'm gonna stand up and third that WOW cos damn that sucks so hard. I really feel like it would be their responsibility to look into this issue and sort it for you. I'm sorry that you recieved an inadequate response. I wish you all the luck in the world getting these issues sorted! *shakes head sadly*

    12. Thanks for the good wishes. Iplehouse told me to send the head back and they'd pay shipping.

EDIT: Sent it back regular airmail as they requested . . . neglected to get insurance. :doh Only now does it occur to me that if it gets lost on the way, I'm going to be the one who gets screwed. Now for a month of staring at my headless doll and worrying. This is definitely cementing a positive image of Iplehouse in my mind, which I'm sure was their intention. :|

    13. Please keep us updated chaos_zebra. I, for one, would be interested in how Iplehouse deals with you during the entire process.

I hope it goes smoothly (and doesn't get lost or damaged)!

    14. Thanks Kitazawa. :) I'll post here as soon as something happens.

I've just heard of someone else who had the same problem (bottom of the page), plus a defective leg. Seems like Iple's QC is really slipping. Guess I should be glad my Asa's body is completely intact, but now I wonder if I shouldn't have just sent the head elsewhere to be repainted rather than risk more IH nonsense. :sigh

    15. The QC is likely because of the amount of orders they have. So far as I know they are still running behind. It seems logical they will be trying to rush their production to meet the orders they have building up, in any industry this tends to lead to quality issues. This is why my problem has never been that there were quality issues period, but rather in how the customer service has chosen to deal with my particular issue.

    16. That's an interesting standpoint, Kitazawa. Maybe I'm ignorant of the ways of business, but personally I wouldn't send out an item I wouldn't be happy to receive.

    17. I'm speaking from having worked in a manufacturing plant before, and what I observed there. I just assume it would be the same elsewhere.

But yeah, it's kinda of crappy how it works.

    18. i ordered 2 real skin ltd jids in the last order period, the are both perfect on the outside but yes one was full of resin flakes (from where they drilled her?). I've never had any trouble with iplehouse though, hope it all works out for you.

    19. I'll be honest and say the issue kadepie had with the Iple logo on the back of the head doesn't surprise me at all, especially in a time where orders seem to be getting rushed. I ordered my girl a year and a half ago, before they were particularly popular, and didn't have the plate included with my doll whatsoever. So I'm sorry to say that's not a new thing with Iple. :<

    20. Wow, guys, I'm so sorry to hear such an unfortunate thing has happened to you and I hope you all have a speedy recovery from this mess. I'll have to admit that reading this scares me. I've been planning on maybe purchasing and IP Mars and this worries me.

It might not stop me from getting him but I'm gonna be real worried and praying he doesn't come with any defects :\

Hopefully IP realizes that a lot of people are complaining about their products and decides to fine tune their QC. I'd rather wait a few extra weeks than get an unfinished doll.

      Good Luck, guys. <3

    21. If you can, you might wait till they're not rushing orders so much anymore. That will probably go a long way for consistent quality. I'm fairly certain they've not had nearly so many issues in the past. My own past experiences with them had been quite pleasant (though also years ago when they only had the YID line XD).

    22. This is very interesting and scary, Im just now deciding what guy to order from them and I am worried now, this is a lot of money to recieve a non perfect doll, I will be checking back to see how these matters turn out!

    23. my 2 cents..... i have successfully ordered, and received many beautiful dolls from Iplehouse. i find them to be an honest company, that will do their best to satisfy their customers needs. as with any manufacturer, there will be, on occasion the random minor defect. this is the nature of mass production. i do believe that Iplehouse will make good on these problems to the best of their ability. my last doll from them did have an ill-fitting logo on the back of the head cap, but honestly, it matters not to me. i suppose if you are a perfectionist, this would not be acceptable. that is each person's choice.

    24. WOW I can't believe company would act like that. I was going to order a Cami doll and now i don't think I will. I am new and could never fix the doll myself plus I am planning on making patterns and outfits to sell and can't dim down the lights to hide issues with a doll that i paid so much money for. I really don't think I will buy from them and thanks for the post I would have been devistated getting a doll with issues and then getting their don't care response. They won't be getting my order.

    25. I do plan on waiting a while before ordering.

I don't think that it's reason enough NOT to order as the problems were, quite frankly, minor and fixable ... just incredibly annoying and inconvenient.

      Thanks for the advice :)

    26. Playing the devil's advocate here, but I don't think the issues are THAT dramatic, Miss Tess! :sweat This really has all the feel of a company that's just temporarily rushed. They really have had stellar customer service in the past, and I wouldn't be surprised if they bounce back to that once they stop feeling so rushed. Plus, the issue's been brought to their attention now that dolls are going out without proper QC - give them a chance to send out some more dolls to see if they're working on the issue or actually providing bad service by ignoring it from now on.

(Also....Cami doll? Last I checked there were no sculpts from Iple named Cami. You sure you're even thinking of the right company? :sweat )

    27. Just chiming in here;
If anyones seen my box opening thread, my Ashanti has quite a few pretty bad seamlines.
She also has sanding marks and light marbling.

I complained to IH, but didn''t expect much to happen as
they cover themselves on the sales page.

There was nothing quite like it on my DarkCocori, so I was quite surprised by it tbh.
You'd expect this kind of thing 2years ago, not now ~ :|

    28. My red sticker fell off as soon as I took Ashanti out of the box and her head cap falls off constantly, she has been sanded in places and has a chip in her foot that shows white resin underneath.

    29. RROSS, really? Woah that's bad... Like really BAD! I thought Iple dolls had their colour embedded into the resin so to speak, like my Resinsoul dolls... Now I'm scared about getting my Kamau more than ever... They really ought to stop releasing all these new dolls and concentrate on upping their customer service and their qaulity control.... Don't get me wrong ok, I LOVE Iplehouse, they are super helpful, and very friendly and stuff, but you know this is kinda bad. Something needs to happen before everything breaks you know?

    30. I agree, they said the sanding is because those parts were the gates and as far as the chip in the foot, I need to send them pics so I'm getting those things together now.

    31. Well good luck with that then! I hope everything turns out ok for you! *crosses fingers that things turn out ok for you at least*

*sigh* 1 or 2 people I could understand but I've heard of like 5 people I think having some kind of issue now. And all at the same time, something needs to happen.

    32. Hi,

I haven't had this issue with Iple, but about 2 years ago, I ordered a light Aaron from them. They had changed the resin color but didn't make an announcement or change the profile pictures, so what I received was significantly different than what they advertised.

I received a response very similar to yours when I complained -- essentially, "this is the product, it's your problem now." I was very polite but remained firm with them, repeating my points and requesting the chance to return the doll. They weren't gracious about it, but they did bend eventually. I'm not sure you want to go that route, but I guess the moral of the story is, with Iple, stay polite but be assertive. Don't let them blow you off.

      Good luck!!

    33. I don't consider the surface of the Mars head to be just a random minor defect. That belongs more in the realm of things such as resin bubbles that happen during the casting process. The rough surface is result of post-casting processing being rushed and sloppy. The surface is both rough enough and uneven enough that I am unable to paint it. If I tried the blushing would come out blotchy.

This is indeed another aspect of rushed mass production (that quality and quality control decrease), but it is one that I feel customer service should feel inclined to deal with. When the problems require me to spend more money just to be able to complete the doll, I do not feel like I am receiving the product that I paid for.

Edit: I thought I should probably clarify that I do consider the damage in my case to be minor, just not "random." In the sense that it could have been prevented if care was taken.

This situation has left a sour taste in my mouth, but I may consider dogging them a little more based on your testimony. I hadn't considered it prior to your post because I did not feel they would be inclined to bend. Out of curiosity, were you able to receive a refund or a replacement? (And if you'd rather not clutter the thread with a response, you can feel free to PM as well. But I would be interested in hearing more details about how things went with you.)

    34. Hi, Kitazawa --

For my Aaron, I ended up arranging to send him back and received a refund, possibly minus some shipping. IIRC, they couldn't do an exchange because they were no longer making dolls in that skin tone. (Then they reissued Dark Aaron and Ashanti, but that's beside the point.) Maybe it will be different in your situation, since Mars isn't a limited... but even if they're not willing to replace him, it seems like the least they can do is pay to have him shipped back, polished up, and returned to you.

I hate to say it, but I remember them finally bending when I told them I was contacting my bank for a chargeback. I know their policy is essentially the dolls are come-as-you-are, and that's fine, but there's a big difference between a minor abnormality and a product that's seriously flawed or unfinshed. Given what you paid and how long you've waited, I don't think "fix it yourself" is really an acceptable answer.

    35. Wow..just wow..
I am hoping their QC will get better in the future..cause now I'm in the middle of saving for one of their dolls.
And I pray all of yours problem can get solved in a win-win situation.

I don't like their attitude that say.."it's your problem now and it just small problems like everyday basis", though.

I'm afraid..but won't stop hoping..there's no other companies that have such realistic dolls as real as iple does.

    36. Rough patches from sanding on the face don't really make sense to me, I mean why would they sand the face? It sounds more like the original cast wasn't sanded smoothly to begin with, so the roughness is forever stuck in the molds. This would explain why they see the issue as a "sorry can't help, have some credit", because they know that sending you another head will simply give you the same problems.

I ordered a doll and a head recently that was delayed due to the busy period and I'm happy to say I haven't had any issues, so it's not across the board it seems.

    37. :(! My poor Asa arrived with a crack in her knee. I knew it wasn't a mold mark or scratch as it's cracked all the way through into the inner part of the knee. I have contacted them and hopefully I can get the leg replaced.

    38. I messaged Iple to ask about the status of my head, and they said they sent it out today. I'm taking that with a grain of salt, but at least it appears that she arrived safely. Just when I thought I was out of the woods, today the resin hook in her foot broke. :doh The metal s-hook got lodged inside her leg and I had to take her apart and restring her with her high-heel feet. I still have the piece so I'll probably gorilla-glue it later. Anyone know what Iple's policy is on replacement feet? I know it's a common problem.

    39. You can just buy replacement feet. If she's a special skintone, I would just contact Iple. I know others have bought extra RS feet so it should be no problem.

edit: http://iplehouse.net/shop/step1.php?number=1897 Drop down skintone options! :whee:

    40. Thanks Strawberryblossom, but I'm not inclined to pay $20 to fix something that wasn't my fault. :|

    41. I wonder if there's a way to create an epoxy mount instead of the resin hook in the feet, then put in a screw hook instead.

    42. I just got in an Ashanti today. I have the same issue of the Iple sticker peeling (what happened to the nice plastic covering my Soori came with??), the head cap not wanting to stay on and some marbling/spots issues even on her face. The worst is the extreme marbling inside her face (looks like ash), but that doesn't show. I can live with all this since Iplehouse considers those minor defects and I love her as she is.

    43. Mine had the same Iple sticker peeling issue and headcap thing. However, I'm used to having dolls with faceplates (and I secure the faceplates on just in case with tear-able cloth medical tape). Sorry to head about the marbling on her face though! :( Hopefully it can be evened out with her faceup.

    44. It's just so sad these things are happening with IH. I cant imagine if I ordered a Realskin/Tan doll from them and getting marbling or unsanded/rough resin on the face/body. If they tell me I should sand it myself, I would very angry and send them hate mail. I have never sand a thing in my life and do not want to ruin a hundred dollars doll! And if they suggest I go to a customizer, I would send them more hate mails! I shouldnt have to dish out more money for a doll that should be about 99% perfect from the company!

I feel for you guys ;u; and hoping IH will get their QC up again, this is all so fustrating, I must imagine!

    45. I don't really think that's necessary to point out an honest mistake. Perhaps she spelled a sculpt name incorrectly, or perhaps she really is thinking of another company. Either way, it doesn't really change her opinion on whether or not to order a doll from them.

And I think it is dramatic. I don't think I'd be too appreciative of a doll arriving to me with bubbles on it's face or cracks in it's knee. If you've ever had that happen to you, let me tell you, it's devastating. Defects on something you have built a beautiful image of in your mind is just awful, though you must learn to love it for how it is. Nothing is perfect, and we all know that, but we still can't help but be upset when our dolls are flawed.

These companies have excellent reputations for a reason; because they typically provide excellent customer service. We order from them with the expectations that if something happens to go wrong, we can rely on them to fix the problem swiftly and with poise. When they do not do so, that is when things like this are posted. If a company starts to slip because they need to "fill orders", then these posts should serve as a wakeup call.

For those of you experiencing problems right now, I wish you the best. This sounds terrible :/

    46. I've been planning to get a Tatiana doll from Iplehouse and now I'm a bit unsure whether to still order her or to wait and find out of this is a continuing problem and if it is what to do since it sounds like its not every doll Iplehouse makes, although there is the chance that she could come with bigger imperfections. She would be my first ball-jointed doll, hence I don't have much experiance with them and would be lost with sanding and everything.

    47. Well, now on top of everything else Iple is lying to me. When I asked if Asa's head had arrived safely (I was worried because they requested I send it regular airmail) they told me they had finished the makeup and sent the head back to me. So if it supposedly only took a week for the head to get there AND for them to finish the makeup and send it back, then a week after they sent it I should definitely have had the head back. Well it's been a week, and nothing. I don't have a tracking number or anything so I don't know if they've even sent it or not. It's not as if I was even pestering them about a ship date; all I asked was whether the head had arrived safely, and they volunteered the extra information (lies). On top of that, they refunded me the shipping as store credit, not cash. I don't feel inclined to order from them again after this, so that's money out of pocket for me, plus two weeks and counting of waiting for them to fix THEIR MISTAKE. I don't call this customer service.

    48. My Ashanti arrived earlier this week and I adore her completely.

But. (there had to be a but, didn't there? Or I wouldn't be posting here) I know she's a dark skinned doll and as such difficult to finish... but they didn't even trim the flash (is it called flash when you're casting resin? I'm an engineer in rl and that's the word for aluminium and zinc castings) between the fingers down at all. I also have the problem with white marks on the back of one of the heels, pretty rough seams, and a few light spots. She had some shiny spots on her face too, and a mark on her cheek where the resin looks like something ran on it.

Has anyone else had the hands thing at least?

Also... I wish I'd said something now but it's too late. I bought my last iple doll in november and recieved him right before christmas and he was showing a lot of the signs you guys have mentioned. A little unfinished, a tad rough, and absolutely covered in resin dust. I knew they were rushed with christmas and all but I didn't expect it to be that bad. Ashanti's eyewells seem really big for a 12mm eyed doll too.

    49. I'm not sure if you mean that the fingers aren't separated or if there are gatemarks on the sides of the fingers. Most companies don't separate the fingers for you, on a WS or NS doll, you do it yourself (if the hands are not sculpted specifically with separated fingers). For example, for my Volks Megu from 2003, I separated the fingers myself with an exacto knife and sanded each one. Of course, with tanned dolls it isn't really advisable to separate the fingers as sanding can ruin the tan. The gatemarks (or seams) on tanned dolls aren't really something you can get rid of (I know that several people have mentioned using a polishing compound, etc., but I have yet to hear of anyone mentioning what they use specifically)--it's one of the things you have to accept particularly with a darker tan.

    50. Wow, they've really been going downhill *that* long X__x; I hadn't realized.

    51. I mean that her fingers aren't separated yes. I have four full iple dolls, and a pair of spare hands from when Seifer took a tumble and she is the only one who didn't have separated fingers. I don't expect fully sanded hands from her because of the witness marks from the process - though they had no problem doing something to the back of her heels on the high heeled feet >.>

With the way her hands are positioned, separating her fingers could be done on her left hand, but her right hand would be much more difficult. However - on the site images, she definately has her fingers separated, it would be very obvious from the picture of her tipping her hat that her left hand (as in her left hand, the right as you look at her) whether the fingers weren't separated.

      time for some experimentation.

Yes, I had to give him a damn good clean when he arrived. Resin dust affects my asthma something awful.

    52. Oh wow, I didn't realize they used to separate the fingers! My Asa's fingers aren't separated either, but I just figured they were one of the companies that doesn't do it. I would've really liked it if they had though; I'm a bit scared to do it myself on such a big doll, because if I mess up it's going to be noticeable!

    53. So you don't have other EIDs then? I wonder if current YIDs are still made with separated fingers or if they no longer do that for them. I also wonder if the JIDs were done with separated fingers or not, since the JIDs and the EIDs came out after the YIDs. I wonder if it began to add too much time to their turn around time as they were becoming more popular as a company.

    54. I don't know if they do it on the EID's. All my boys are YID's. From June 08, nov 08 and dec 09.

I have two friends with JID's, both basics, and a friend who has an original kamau. I will ask if they have/had separated fingers.

    55. I think it will be interesting to pinpoint when they stopped separating fingers.

    56. On the separated finger note, the Mars I recieved recently had his separated (the one the first post was about XD). But the YID mold may just be a tad cleaner in this respect. The fingers aren't really all *that* close together, so I don't think you'd actually get flash with them. (Pretty sure it's called flash with any sort of molding.)

    57. The one from november was a mars also. :) He has really rough fingers.

I'm making my Xipil (My Ashanti) feel better by making her some new and awesome clothing. And myself, but as long as she's happy...

    58. Oddly enough ... though the body on mine is slightly rough, it's nothing too bad and not beyond what I might expect from casting process. It was mostly just the head that had serious problems X_x;

    59. I would like to chime in about one of my Iple dolls.

Last Christmas, I received a JID with a bad finish. These are the things that I found unsatisfactory to me.

      1. She had seams and needed sanding on her arms and shoulders
      2. One ankle was very stiff and wasn't as flexible as the other. (maybe not shaped to fit in the leg right?)
      3. The elastic knot that is supposed to be tied around the S hook in her head had somehow came to be the inside her body between her legs....???

She is a bit floppy because of the displaces knot, but none of the other things are terrible: just annoying. It was the holiday season and I knew Iple was very busy with all their orders. I didn't tell them about it. I didn't see it as a big enough deal to cry to them about since most of the problems can be fixed on my own. However, after paying over 400 dollars (for the doll and shipping) I shouldn't have to do it myself. I should be getting a perfect doll.

I would like to stick up for Iple though. :sweat While there are reports of bad doll quality, Iple is one of the best doll manufacturers out there. They listen to costumers request and make beautiful dolls in record timing. And we must remember that this thread holds only a very small fraction of all the orders iplehouse gets. A large majority of people are very happy with their orders. I have ordered from Iple many times before and after this incidence and have been a very happy camper.
These dolls are made by hand, not machines, so we are dealing with humans: there will be mistakes. I would hate to think someone wouldn't but from Iple based on the complaints here.

    60. My Ashanti arrived earlier last week and I posted about her in this thread:

There are other pictures of her in my FLICKR:

I sent Iple all of the pictures of her head and they told me to send her head back and they'd fix her face. I will send her head off this week, but I am very hesitant and heartbroken over her. Of all the dolls I have, she is by far the one I most loved before I met her. I will be sure to insure her head.

Iple did say in their reply that they were hasty and tried to get her too me quickly. She also has the headcap issues everyone else has mentioned. She has the large seamlines as well, but I own Fairyland NS and WS dolls and Bambicrony tan dolls that do as well. I'm ok with her, but I do want her face fixed.

I have a Benny on layaway, and even though they have promised to take great care with her face up (and they would not allow me to cancel the face up), I am very worried. My RS SE Ryan did not have any of this issues that I noticed, but now I feel the need to undress him and do a thorough inspection.

I truly hope that everyone has good outcomes with Iple when it is all said and done.
