Dear Sidroq. Stella is beautiful. When I see her, I am reminded that there is an company in NY called Opera Ebony.

 

Your ebony Stella is a beauty and so unusual! I have shied away from ebony just because I find the very dark skinned dolls so hard to photograph them but they are so exotic and lovely! I'd love an ebony girl if I could figure out how to take photos of her

 

@sidroq The combination ebony + Stella is really pretty! An elaborate wig is exactly what she needs, I think it will look awesome, especially with that dress.

Hi, I'm quite new to this forum and to the bjd world. I'm eagerly awaiting my first ever bjd, FID Aaliyah, whom I ordered about 2 months ago. I've been learning a lot through reading this thread and I just want to thank all of you for sharing your knowledge and photos of your gorgeous dolls. It's always intimidating being a "newbie" but I've found DOA to be very welcoming and easy to navigate. I do have a question - how do you make it through the excruciating wait for a new doll that you really, really want? I've been trying to pass the time by buying and making clothes and wigs for Aaliyah so that I'll be prepared when she arrives. However, I've also immersed myself in various forums on DOA in order to scratch that dolly itch and the result is that I now have 3 additional dolls ordered - yikes!

 

Dear Hmac58, hello. Well, I work on creating a wardrobe for the doll once I have ordered her. I make sure that she has a coming home outfit first. Then I make sure that she has seasonal outfits. I don't sew so I spend a great deal of time searching for items online. That's what I do while I wait.

 

Yes, same here Owl Queen. I create "mood boards" for my incoming doll(s) to help me choose wigs, eye colours, etc. Then I search online for wigs, pieces of outfits etc that I think/hope will suit them. That helps pass the waiting time, as you get some cute little parcels arriving.

Congratulations Hmac58 on ordering Aaliyah, she is a beautiful sculpt! Your wait may not be too much longer if you ordered her 2 months ago? Looking forward to seeing photos!

 

Welcome and congrats on ordering Aaliyah @Hmac58 ! Three additional dolls on order, huh? Better pace yourself--says a woman who also has 4 dolls currently on order. While waiting, I review wigs, shoes and eyes to see if I need to order new ones. Then I start crocheting. My latest order is for laceweight yarn. One of my on-order dolls is coming blank, so I'll also be planning a faceup.

Has anyone else made any "panic purchases" because of the virus? My investments took a nosedive last month, so I figured I'd better order another doll while I still had the money to do so. In fact, that was my excuse for the two dolls I ordered this month: FID Yur and a non-Iplehouse doll.

 

Hello back, Owl Queen. So it sounds like the most common (and productive) way that people use the waiting time is to plan a wardrobe, wigs, eyes, etc. I like that idea because it also maintains the anticipation, which can begin to fade if the wait drags on for a long time.

Thanks for the congratulations,LilyAndRuby. I love the Aaliyah sculpt but it was a difficult decision because I really like a lot of the FID women. Just to let you know, one of the dresses that I bought in anticipation of Aaliyah's arrival was from you. (Hope that's ok to mention here) When I can post photos of her, I'll take some in that dress. It's so beautiful! I hope that I won't be waiting too much longer, but I'm in Canada and I heard that Iplehouse is not shipping to some countries right now so that may affect things.

I'm hoping that once Aaliyah arrives I'll be kept busy getting her to look the way I want and photographing her and I'll stop buying for a while. You mention crocheting and it was while reading your blog that I got inspired to learn to crochet, so thank you so much for that. I've only made some simple things for Aaliyah so far but once I have her here I'll be able to do more.

 

I consider all of my purchases panic motivated as I get older and older! (Only a while till death.)Haha!
BUT I bought 3 other than IH heads recently. I am waiting for many bodies! Also 2 Asian outfits and a long awaited head have been stuck in airports for a month. I seem to buy heads under duress. Glad to know I'm not alone in my insane activities.

 

@Hmac58 - Thank you very much. Sometimes I worry that people will get sick of my crocheted doll clothes. It's a thrill to know I inspired someone to learn the craft. As for "I'll stop buying for a while," I said that too at the beginning of the year. It hasn't stopped me.

Thanks for another excuse I can use for buying more dolls, @Mahgiep, gruesome as it is. When everything that has been stuck in airports finally arrives, I bet you'll feel like Christmas has come early.

 

Let me also encourage extreme silliness as well as never ending shopping. (Every time I make a large purchase I vow to stop but I can't.) We used to have a silly club for our very serious grandson. We honed him into a very silly boy but he still has serious tendencies.

Unfortunately, I need Christmas almost everyday to feel good.

 

Well, @LilyAndRuby I'm sure that you are totally confused by my previous comment about having bought a dress from you. Just to prove what a total newbie I am, when I looked at your profile I mistook your follower, Olga Borontova, for you - doh . It was her dress that I was referring to. Sorry about the mix-up.

 

Congratulations @Hmac58 on ordering Aaliyah. She's a favourite here I try to forget about dolls on order otherwise it's too torturous haha. I just keep busy sewing. I love the idea of creating mood boards @LilyAndRuby

I also of course look at photos and hat's how we end up ordering more dolls while we wait

She's a very happy diva of a doll with all the attention and show-stopping dresses. @Mahgiep, I pictured her as Violetta from La Traviata in these pictures But I think when her proper wigs come in, it will all come together better. My apartment gets very little sunlight and ebony is definitely hard to photograph indoors for me, but hopefully when things calm down a bit and I feel ok take non-essential outdoor walks, I will try to get some pics of her in an outdoor theater nearby with really nice indirect sunlight. Her resin is so stunning in real life, and I'm just not skilled enough to capture it!

@Hmac58, welcome to the hobby! You're going to love your Aaliyah! She's such a stunning sculpt, and Iple FIDs are so much fun. They're a nice manageable weight to carry, but not too small to craft for comfortably. Personally, I love the size!

@LyanneNZ Wow, your Aaliyah looks amazing! I love her eyes. It's always such a challenge to photograph the tiny FID/Raccoon eyes but hers are coming across nice and vivid!

 

Hi Hmac58, thank you so much for clearing that up! I thought I must have had the elves working for me, and was intrigued to see what dress it was.. I haven't got past the "right, I have pattern pieces here".. "and I have fabric here"... but the two haven't matched up yet rofl! I do look forward to making some outfits for my beautiful dollies though... some day Olga's dresses are indeed beautiful, and I have a couple of her amazing pieces for my girls ^.^

Mahgiep, I love the notion of a silliness club! And our dolls are our inspiration that take us out of the real world aren't they. This is a wonderful forum!

Vermont Chick, yes I too have promised myself "That's it, no more, I have enough now". Haha. I won't even say right here how many I presently have on order, but yes, it sure will feel like Christmas when they arrive! Oh, and I ADORE your crochet doll clothes, your attention to detail is amazing and I love to see your photos of your creations

 

@LyanneNZ - Your Aaliyah looks sultry and gorgeous. The colors of her dress and background makes her green eyes really pop. Pink is definitely her color.

@LilyAndRuby - Thank you! I need to crochet something for my FIDs so I can post it here. They haven't had anything new for a long time. (I've been sidetracked by tinies.) I would start something for Yur except she'll be my first on the curvy body and I'll have to fit as I go.

@vermont chick Panic purchases ... no, more the opposite - no purchases cause I am a little paranoid I won´t see their arrival. If I contract this virus I fear it won´t end well. Which makes me think twice about buying stuff. Which is kinda stupid, I guess. But at least my purse is happy about these morbid thoughts of mine ...

 

Damn wish that worked for me! I'm plenty morbid but that just makes me buy all the more!

 

sidroq, your ebony Stella is glorious! You have cemented my ambition to someday own a FID in ebony, I just haven't decided which one.

 

My Aaliyah has painted eyeballs which is why they are easier to photograph. I love glass and acrylic eyes but I had trouble when I moved to the smaller dolls capturing their tiny eyes so I played around and made some painted ones. I need to make more for Aaliyah as I think these may be a tiny bit too small and one is not quite even with the other but most of my FID crew are wearing painted eyes now They can still me moved around and changed as normal but they are just hand painted irises on a white polymer clay sphere.

 

@LyanneNZ - Your doll's eyes are gorgeous--I was going to ask where you bought them. I've tried painting my own but I can't get both eyes to match. Do you finish them with a gloss medium or a lacquer for protection and shine?

@Ashemanu - When I think about it, my panic purchases are probably fueled by shortages at the grocery store. So many products have disappeared from the shelves because of people hoarding, I figure I have to buy dolls when I can or else they'll disappear, too. This is sheer paranoia on my part because dolls are made to order. They don't run out unless the maker has specified that only a certain number will be made. As for fearing that I won't see their arrival, I don't let myself dwell on that possibility.

 

I just paint a gloss sealer over them. Any time that I can avoid a spray sealer means I can paint indoors at any time It is a challenge to get them to match in this scale. They are so tiny to paint.

This time though my Raffine is wearing acrylic eyes that I bought before Safrindoll stopped making them.

@LyanneNZ - I wouldn't spray something that tiny, either. I'd have to do it outside and the propellant would most likely blow the eyes into the grass. I'd never find them again. I wish Safrindoll would bring back their resin eyes.

I just love Raffine's dress. The tailoring is exquisite and the color divine!

@Ian-KunX - Thank you. Yes, he finally came home a week ago, and is recovering slowly. Unfortunately he won't be allowed to drive anytime soon, so that will really limit going for doll photos out on location. I'm just going to have to put extra effort into our backyard this summer.
@Ashemanu - Thank you. I took the necklace she had with her gold gown (a Kate Webster doll necklace) popped off the gold stone, and glued in a smaller dark blue rhinestone, and surrounded it with tiny size 15/0 pale blue beads.

 

@MB Lilac Your Yur is lovely and I'm so glad that your husband is doing better.

 

Thanks. He was in the hospital for four weeks, and it turned out he had a severe case of Hand, Foot & Mouth disease, which caused pneumonia and encephalitis. Thankfully he did not have a heart attack or stroke as well, like they originally thought - or Covid 19. It's going to be a very long recovery.

 

@MB Lilac If you need any speech/language (communication) recommendations please let me know. I am an SLP.

Thank you, but that part is fine. He just has some fine motor issues and is still quite slow, but he is getting better every day.

I'm thinking of getting Claude for her. Not sure just when though. I'm trying to resist temptation and hope that there's a Summer Event next time the FIDs come up for preorder in June, because our dollar is worth barely 70 cents right now.

 

Someone have been very spoiled since her arrival last March. I completed sewing her fourth dress yesterday! FID are a really a nice size to sew for!! So, here is miss Carina with the first dress I made her.


Also, she is not alone anymore, she have a friend!! Two years ago, I bought out of the blue FID Bichun. But I kept him in his box, planning to eventually sell him since I wasn't sure if I liked the FID size (I'm used to EID size). So, when Iplehouse did their last Holiday sales, I wanted to give another chance to the FID by buying Carina, my favourite female sculpt. Took me few days to get use to her tiny size and I was sold! They are so much lighter that EID (but I still really like my EID girls). I took Bichun out of his box last week, and they became good friends! So Bichun is staying. Since I didn't sew anything for him yet (he is borrowing the capri pants from my EID girls for his own modesty, hehehe!!!) he didn't really want to show himself, except for a quick hello.

 

Dear lapivoine, Carina looks very pretty in this dress. I am happy that she has a friend.

 

@lapivoine - Once you get used to the easy portability of FID, it's hard to go back to the larger sizes. And I suspect Carina and Bichun will get along very well together--as soon as he gets some clothes.
