Iplehouse dark brown and MSC?

Mar 24, 2024

    1. Hello! I'm planning on buying an Iplehouse Benny in May and doing her faceup myself; I've worked with MSC on tan vinyl, but I'm worried it will make Benny a weird color. Has anyone had issues with MSC and the deeper tones Iplehouse has? Am I being paranoid? Thank you in advance!

    2. I've worked with light brown and have had fairly good results besides the body blushing tending to chip easily. The hard thing with MSC and darker resin is that it can lighten it a bit/make the resin appear cloudy. To combat this, I usually put a layer of matte varnish over the final layer with a melamine sponge or something similar. That seems to make it a little less cloudy looking.
Also having a cool, dry environment for the MSC is key.
That being said, it may turn out a little different with dark brown :/
      Hope this helps!

    3. I’ve yet to do a faceup on Iplehouse dark brown, but I’ve done a faceup in darker resin without a hint of ghosting! With that said I live in a tremendously dry climate, so never having any humidity probably helps!

    4. Definitely depends on your environment. I tried dark resin once at 70°F with 40% humidity and it was so cloudy. I'd recommend doing an easy-to-clean test piece first to confirm if your spraying environment will allow it.

    5. MSC sucks for dark resin. Maybe some people get lucky but that is not the norm from what I've seen!
Your profile says you're in Japan. If that's true, get yourself the spray that Volks makes, Powder Finish. It's sooo good for dark resin colors. :aheartbea

    6. What kind of varnish? Acrylic? That sounds like it might be a good option potentially.

Oh wow, they look GORGEOUS. I do live in a somewhat humid region and we're heading headlong into Murderously Humid summer, so I might be in trouble.

Testing is a good idea, I always forget to do that! I'm worried about humidity, it gets really bad during the summer and I'd hate to leave her faceless for months and months...

I will check that out! Does it have the same respiration protection needs as MSC? I've never used it before.

    7. Seconding this! It's called Zoukei-Mura Finishing Powder Spray UV-Cut and it works great on dark resin. I used it on my doll Poppy's faceup and it didn't leave any weird ashy cast on her skin.

My understanding is that ZM spray is also less finicky when it comes to different weather--I've sprayed it on humid days when spraying MSC would have gone horribly and it worked great. I actually prefer it to MSC so much that I use it for all of my faceups now.

I've heard from some folks that it might be a bit less toxic than MSC, but definitely still wear a respirator and gloves when spraying, and spray outside!

    8. Thank you so much!! I’m lucky I live in such a dry climate—both of those faceups were done in subzero temperatures (I do not reccomend this, but I do it all the time with no adverse effects) with an ambient humidity of around 9% according to my terrarium hygrometer. I expect the ghosting would get worse in a really humid summer!!

    9. I agree with @Saphira, take the same precautions with it as you would MSC. Also agree that it performs WAY better in humid conditions! When I used MSC I'd just look at it funny and it would bubble or chip. On the other hand, I've used ZM Finishing Powder on my porch when it was actively raining, with no problems. :aeyepop: (I still do not recommend spraying while it's raining, but I was desperate!)
