Introducing Késhav and Charisma! [New Pics! 2/09/07!]

Sep 12, 2004

    1. Hi all,

Right now I'm at work on two dolls! Késhav (pronounced "Kay-shuv") is the boy. Charisma is the girl. Right now I'm happy to share pictures of both as I work on finishing them!

The Késhav and Charisma News page! (Includes ordering information.)
      http://denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117948

First up, Késhav (precast, unfinished headsculpt):

      Secondly, Charisma:

      1. Nude/in-progress photos, so you can best see the sculpt:
These are work-in-progress photos with unfinished faceups. These are photos of the actual resin casts!

These are the original photos I took of the unpainted master sculpt!

    3. First impressions? Please think of descriptors...

      .
      .
      .

Now please _hold_ those thoughts. I don't want the following to influence your first impressions!!!

      .
      .
      .

Because this is what I was going for:

      - adult (this is supposed to be, say, an "SD23" head)
      - sensuous (very refined, sublime)

That's it. You're not supposed to be able to tell the gender or anything else from this head: just, hopefully, that damn, it's good-looking.

That, again, is the _intent_. Did it work? Feel free to rip it apart: I need all the constructive criticism I can get!

      Muchas gracias! :D

EDIT: Thanks guys for pointing that out: I forgot to mention that the eyebrows and eyes behind are indeed temporary. I just put them on for eyehole placement (and because I was tired of staring at eye sockets with nothing in them while I was sculpting O_o;; ) :oops

    4. :o
It's amazing! The detail, the skill! The face is just gorgeous, and the feet are nice, too. (I hate feet, but I like those ones - feel proud.) The only thing I don't like so much is the sculpted eyes - I like the idea of glass eyes, etc. *nod* But really ... just ... wow.

    5. You might wish not to have the eyebrows sculpted on--they limit how the eyebrow painting can go. A little parenthesis of an eyebrow would look funny.
Make another! don't go messing with this one, who is beautiful. Very symmetric, nice adult face, with a larger nose & mouth, but not excessive.

Sculpted eyes are nice, and can always be cut out if you want to set eyes later.

The hands, you might want to follow some of the Japanese sites (see the make-a-bjd thread in tips, as it has links to all the good ones). Basically, have wires inside the fingers so they don't fall off. (i have no idea how they do it, either.)

I envy the heck out of those feet.

need to do more sculpting myself now, after seeing your lovely results.

      Ann in CT

    6. I agree, the feet are to die for. Absolutely lovely job. I also agree about the molded eyes...I much prefer eye sockets, but it's your doll, so your choice ^^ I also think it might be a good idea to leave off the molded eyebrows, that way you can change them via faceup to get different expressions.

      ~Megan

    7. Those lips WOW! can I kiss them? They are great! I love the little dip that is above the peak of the lips looks so real! I also love the nose and eye sockets, but I too perfer the glass eyes. The feet are also so real looking I swear I could see viens! Lol! Just amazing!

    8. Absolutely beautiful - I wouldn't change a THING. Please, please post more pictures as you get more done. I am very impressed. :D

The only other comment I have is that I would definitely say the head looks masculine, but I should add the disclaimer that I tend to see men where others see women. Years of pretty manga boys will do that to you.

    9. :o Now that's skill! It looks amazing! The face does look more mature, and is very beautiful. I think my favorite part is the feet, though. They're long and realistic. Some doll feet I've seen look sorta... squished.

    10. I immediately thought: Wow, great detail!... older/mature sculpt... male... well, could be female... refined, oriental appearance. It's a little hard to form solid opinions this early, but I think you're definitely on the right track! Can't wait to see it evolve. Keep posting those pics for us!

    11. That's amazingly beautiful!!! :o

Everything's so very well done!!! :o

Please, post more pictures ASAP, thank you!!!! :daisy :D

    12. Wow thats Good!
I love realistic sculpts and you have it !
      keep us posted!
I wanna see the finished results!

    13. Would it be weird of me to say I think the feet are sexy? Although I do wonder how well he'd be able to stand on them, which I guess we won't know until the doll's cast and assembled.

For some reason I did immediately think of the doll as male, don't know why. But it's a lovely sculpt, either way. Elegantly mature. I'm looking forward to seeing the hands with more detail.

Judging from the positive response, you might be able to set up your own BJD cottage industry! ;D

    14. I love how mature and older looking he (it looks like a guy to me definately! :D) is! I am in utter awe of your skill, I know how hard it can be to get all those little details in *____* You must definately post more pictures of your progress! (And the feet, the feet! I have a bit of a foot fetish myself so very very <3)

    15. WOW! I am so absolutely impressed! :D I can't wait to see the whole dolls done! Keep us updated as you sculpt more~ Even my husband was like, "Those are the most impressive feet I've ever seen. o_o" XD

    16. WoW!.. This is fab! I can see either gender definetely, and I love the face and the feet. Please keep going with it, and post updates!!

      - Therese

    17. That face is beautiful. It does look older, which is a very good thing, and very elegant. If that was a commercially available doll, I'd buy it.

    18. Wow! I have to agree about the feet! NICE. Congrats- it is a wonderful job on all of it!

    19. AAAAHHH~~~!!! C'est tres fantastique!! *____* (yes, I do randomly splurt things in french when I get excited... the curse of a fast learning language student..)

I'm a terrible sculptor... but, wow! That's amazing! I LOVE the feet, *and* the head! Simply... amazing!! I really like the feet... so nice... so looong...! The toes are very nice. I couldn't help thinking, immeadiatly: Those are such realistic feet!!

I'll be honest... I deffinately saw the face as male  ... I think it may be because of the big eyebrows... (which I think you're going to remove, so...) but the feet looked neither femine nor masculine. I really liked them... my feet are small and wide... but... big feet are so pretty! :D

      What are you making him/her out of? I've only worked with clay before... ><;;

pain. Great job! How long did it take you? I'm very curious about the making of it! Please tell us how it goes! Good luck!

    20. He's gorgeous! What a beautiful sculpt! His feet are wonderful, too!

On thing I noticed is that his upper eyelids do not seem convex enough to hold a round eyeball - but it may just be the focus of the photos.

You're extremely talented! Please keep us posted on his progress - can't wait to see his hands

    21. WOW! Can you make me a doll? :o

      The feet are beautifully detailed, and they're so big! Definitely the sign of an older person. xD;; And the head is just gorgeous, but I agree, it definitely looks masculine. I can't wait to see the finished project. What are you going to do after you've finished making the clay pieces? Cover it in a sawdust mixture or something? I don't know too much about the doll sculpting process but I'm very interested -- I'd like to make one of my own someday too. ^^;

    22. Looks adult male to me, and a little demonic, but beautifully sculpted! I admire your skill! Please do keep us posted on his progress!

    23. It's looking absolutely fantastic!

    24. Thank you so much, everyone.

I particularly appreciate the pointers on where the head needs improvement. But in general, I can't tell you how much the warm reception means to me. I've been sculpting by making things up as I go along -- so at every stage, I don't really know what I'm doing. ^^;; You all might know I bought a Dollfie Dreams doll to use as a reference, but you can guess it isn't that useful after all :( (let's just call the DD head "very simple"). So those with other BJDs (with more detailed parts), thanks for your comments so far, and please keep them coming!

      For those who asked:

      On materials: These pieces were made from a glob of mixed-together scraps of Sculpey. I'm not sure I'd recommend it: I usually use clay, which can be carved when leather-hard, but is solid enough to keep its shape. I just carved a bit out from behind the head, which both made the face unbearably squooshy (ever tried to squeeze a Barbie head? :o). So, Einstein here might have to start again by making a new head. ^_^;;

      On the process: Hm. I sculpted this by taking a blob of Sculpey and either doing the traditional additive process, or taking out my Swiss army knive and carving at it (did I mention this is really old Sculpey? ^^') *Note! Do not carve too enthusiastically! *sliced palm of hand doing this* :oops: I used my imagination and my own body as a guide. That's about it ^^;

On what the hell I'm up to with all this: Thanks for the tips on wiring the hands, using glass eyes, etc. I don't know if I can do the wiring, though. If you remember an old post of mine, I hope to learn casting (can you pour resin over wires?). This doll I'm working on is meant to be a master for a set of 28 casts (of the same doll). It's for a project I hope to finish next year. A short description is "character doll fashion theater," where the "characters" come from various mythological figures and from Japanese, Western, and Indian pop culture. If it's resin, I can tweak each a little, but each of the 28 dolls will be playing a different role. Since these are both male and female roles, it's important that the base be largely androgynous.

      Yowza. Long post! ^^'

But again, thank you so much for your feedback and support! ^_^

    25. Desriptors and first impressions -

God I wish I had feet like that.

      How did she DO that?

Umm...obviously the hands have a ways to go still...but I can see how their form will be, and it's good.

I LOVE the head sculpt..I can almost say what Asian ethinic group it looks like it's from...PLEASE say it's a boy, cause it's SOOO pretty...wait a minute...is that an EYE!?!?

OMG, it is an eye....it actually looks pretty good, too. Huh. Never woulda thought...

I still think changeable eyes would be better, more versatile, but to each their own!

All That said....I like it. If you want to do scultped eyes, I think you have the talent to pull it off. Just remeber that you can't do as much with them, if that's what you choose.

Hmm...I don't suppose you'll be making molds from those feet and offering them for sale? **hopeful** No? **sigh**

    26. You certainly have succeeded in capturing a graceful, mature, alluring, androgynous air with the parts you have shown. If the finished handsculpts come out as detailed as the footsculpts, we'll all be swooning over them too!

      Can I have one? :D

Keep us posted. Your level of talent makes me jealous!

      --MW

    27. I'm in awe of your sculpting talent. At first impression, I assumed the face was masculine. the feet! wow! your entire project will be a photo journey that we'll all enjoy following. what do casters use to put the clay/resin on or around so that there are even and sufficient hollow centers for wire/elastic?

    28. If I've got it right (always risky), they use "slush casting", which involves turning the mold over & over until the resin sets in a layer all around the mold; lather, rinse, repeat until shell is thick enough.

To get a hollow-centered head when modelling, I've seen tin foil (Al really, of course) scrunched to form a nice egg shape a bit smaller than the desired head size.
There are lots of other materials, but the foil is good for oven-bake clays because it will not melt, form toxic fumes, or explode & cause your head to go yucky.
Styrofoam is BAD to use with oven bake clay.

    29. Oh my goodness... WOW. I... wow. You are gifted with the sculpt and the eyes that make it possible. It's nothing that hasn't already been said, but my goodness, that is some amazing work. I kinda like the sculpted eyebrows, I do wonder about making eyesockets, but... as a representation of the human form, that is incredible.

    30. thanks, Ann in CT, for the explanation of how to get the hollow center in the doll. that makes me appreciate the hand-made Volks and CP, etc. dolls even more, knowing how each leg, arm, hand, torso, head has to be created. I wonder how many doll parts are "tossed" because they have flaws or don't meet Volks' etc. standards?

Setsuna, this is a real challenge for any dollmaker, especially "winging it" on your own! you've got a great start.

      still in awe.

    31. Thanks again.

      Winging it has been, and will definitely continue to be an adventure. The questions I ask on DoA often tie into the "research" I'm doing. It's the best I can do, short of owning an SD13 to crib notes from. Not having an SD13 makes it difficult, but at least I can be assured my sculpt is original! ^_^;

"The Adventures of Pygmalion." I'm aspiring to that tale... hopefully it'll have a happy ending!
