We’re starting the new year off with a new feature – doll profiles! (The link is under the Community tab.) Doll profiles are a way to share extensive information about each of your dolls. There’s room for the doll’s general information, styling preferences and character details. You can also upload a photo of the doll from your computer or phone. See the Doll Profiles FAQ for more information. Doll profiles will appear on a Dolls tab on your profile, and are also searchable. The doll profile search is a great way to find dolls that match specific criteria. Update! All members can create up to 25 doll profiles. If you need more, they're available as paid account upgrades. If you need help with something that isn’t covered in the FAQ, post here or in Ask the Moderators.
Would love to be able to make more than 5 doll profiles. I currently have 7 dolls, and have more on the way... having to pick who has a profile and who doesn't is a bit of a bummer. Other than that, I think this is awesome.
I love reading about other people's dolls and their backstories. ^^ It always amazes me how creative the people here are. Thanks for adding this feature!
omg yay! I've been wanting a feature like this! Definitely love it!!! Also hope more spaces will be added in the future, as I have quite a lot of characters planned I think this feature is awesome!
The perfect tool for any aspiring storyteller. But the best part is definitely reading/seeing what others have written. What a great way to discover people on the forum! So many awesome characters. Thank you, DoA Staff & Beta Testers!
Just the thing I need to continue to put off the work I brought home to do. I can always count on you to help, DoA Off to procrastina--- uh, test the new feature.
@sailorchiron You can add images in the Doll Images section, but this is for externally hosted images only, the same as on other parts of DoA. It's not possible to upload more than one photo. It would be nice, and is technically possible, but we don't have room for it.
@sailorchiron that's under 'Uploaded Image Constraints' – it doesn't apply to the externally hosted images. Sorry if that's confusing!
This is awesome! Although my 24cm doll is listed under the 40-49cm category? Did I miss something filling it out or...?
@meiloslyther Your doll profile will list on whatever category you're viewing when you click the Create Doll Profile button. If you click that button on the main Doll Profiles page, you'll see a dropdown list of sizes to choose from. I've moved your doll's profile, but if it happens in future, click the Report link at the bottom of the profile and a moderator will move it to the right place.
Ah, thank you! (I also noticed that it shows what category it is at the top of the form page... good to know.)
This is such a cute feature! I had a lot of fun filling out my five profiles already! I would loooove it if we could add more in the future. My only feedback would be about the best and worst features of the dolls... mostly it just isn't something I'm interested in when looking at a doll profile. I am interested in technical details like the eyes, wigs, and aesthetic, but not a review of the doll itself, I guess? Though I suppose I enjoyed complaining about my own dolls' shortcomings... XD
I love that this feature was added! I am so excited to start filling out my dolls profiles. I am especially excited that there's places to fill out what wigs/ eyes/ faceup artist/ mod artist/ etc! I love looking and other people's dolls (and now, profiles, too) and so often we sit here and go, "I wonder where that wig is from?", and now, we'll know! Awesome feature, all the way around! As soon as I get some profile photos, I'll be putting my profiles up! I'd love to have more space available in the future for more profiles. :3 I, like many others, have way more than five and would love to share them with the world! Even paying a small fee wouldn't bother me.
Thank you so much for this feature! ♥ This is a cool way to show off your dolls - easier to find your own info too than from the database threads scattered across the forums. I did have some issues though, when I tried the feature. 1) I spent a good hour writing my first doll profile, then saved it as a draft. Then I edited the draft again, but after I saved it the second time, it seemed to disappear from the face of Earth. I can't find it anymore (and I'm a doof and forgot to back my info up XD). I'm sure I didn't click any "delete" button, so I'm a little confused as to what happened - although I understand that all new features will have some bugs and that this is a testing phase. Just thought I'd tell you what happened. 2) Would it at all possible in the future to be able to do the classic BBCode image linking for the profile picture, rather than have to upload it from my computer? The reason I had to edit my draft was to try to get my image look like, eh, something that wasn't photographed with a potato. XD 200KB is a very small limit, especially if you're trying to fit the maximum width of 800 pixels in it. Also I think it would be less strain on the forum platform, maybe? Anyway, just a suggestion - since the feature already has a spot where you can link more images, it would be nice if it was possible to do the same to the profile picture. Anyway, like I said, thank you so much for the feature! ♥ I love it, and I can't wait to see what my doll profiles will look like when I get them all done.
We'll be increasing the limit after we're done with this final testing period, probably in March. Noted, and if anyone else has feedback about that aspect, feel free to share. Eventually we'll have a (much improved) section of DoA for reviews, so it may be redundant here. Personally though, I've enjoyed reading the little quirks about people's dolls. @tekkonkinkreet Definitely back up anything you're writing! I'm not sure what happened this time and it didn't generate an error on our end. What operating system/browser are you using? I will try to reproduce the issue. There has to be one uploaded photo so that the thumbnails can be generated. It's not possible to use offsite images for that.
I'm loving this new feature! Especially how there's room for which eyes, wig and whatnot a doll has, and personally I like the part about best/worst features of the doll. It's very helpful for when you're trying to decide whether or not to get a specific doll and I don't think it gets in the way or anything. In my opinion, you guys should keep that, haha.
Personally, I think this part should stay. I also like seeing little "technical" notes like this, and particularly if I'm interested in a new doll, I'd love to see not only what others have done with it, but what they've noticed is particularly noteworthy or troublesome. Just because one person doesn't like it, doesn't mean others aren't interested, after all.
@Dezarii Ah, so that's why the uploaded photo. Well, it makes sense then. Any pointers as to what uploaded size/resolution looks the best? I tried 600 x 465 pixels (first 72ppi and then 240ppi) and it looked absolutely horrendous. My image was the usual rectangle when I uploaded, but in the doll profile it seemed to be stretched into a square, which made it look funky I guess. I'm using Windows 7 and Google Chrome. I have no idea what happened, I just clicked save, then looked away while I assumed it was saving, and when I looked back it was gone. This COULD be a human error, I am known for my mistakes - but I could swear I did press the right button. x_x But if there was any error message, I wouldn't know because I wasn't looking at my screen. OTL And next time I'll first write my stuff on somewhere else, and then copy+paste it to DoA. XD Was silly of me to not to remember backing up!
Love love love this feature. I for one enjoy the best and worst feature on the profile page. When looking at sculpts i think its nice to see what other people who own the doll have to say about it. I know i have a few favorite dolls that other people own and its nice to be able to see their profiles, pictures, in one place. Very cool amazing feature over all.
Ooh this is awesome! I hope the limit will be increased though– I have twenty more boys wanting their own profile pages :P
@tekkonkinkreet Please make a test profile so that I can see how the image turns out. Your image shouldn't be stretched unless it's quite small. It does get cropped into a square thumbnail, but should appear normal on the Portrait tab of the profile. Edit: I also wanted to say thanks to all of you who've said nice things about this feature. It was paid for by the generous donations we received during last year's fundraising. We hope to introduce more features throughout the year.
I absolutley love this feature! Not only is It great way to see other people's dolls but I'm having fun reading the character info as well. It's had the probably unintended consequence of motivating me to 'finish' more of my dolls so they will look nice in their profiles I think the best/worst feature is very useful and will be a big help to anyone looking to buy a doll. It's nice to be able to get a feel for a bodies quirks and difficulties.
This feature is so much fun - I love reading other people's doll profiles! Thank you thank you thank you~♥ Can't wait to get my doll and complete her character so I can create a doll profile too.
This feature is rad-- I really enjoyed going through and creating profiles for some of my dolls. Can't wait to get more added, but to be fair, I still need to fill in more of the details of the ones I had made! Will it eventually become a sort of new format for the BJD database, or will it continue to be separate? (i.e., sculpt/company/skintone tags used to bring up dolls meeting specific criteria?) Keep up the great work, DoA Mod Squad!
@Leadora doll profiles can be used as an alternative to the BJD database, but they are two separate things. Doll profiles have better search options for specific criteria, but the database will probably always have more dolls listed. It's not really feasible to thoroughly tag the BJD database, so if you want to search by criteria other than company/sculpt, use the advanced search for doll profiles.
I love this feature!!! But I think I'm having a problem creating new doll profiles from yesterday. I've created several a few days ago but yesterday when I would like to add a new one, I was unable to find the Create Doll Profile button *LOL* Does anyone have an idea where should I find the button?
@stvictoria Currently you can only have five doll profiles, and you're at your limit. Don't worry – we'll be making a higher limit soon. For now we're still testing this feature. Does anyone have feedback about the advanced search for doll profiles? Are there any criteria that you'd like to be able to search for, but can't? We can't add everything to the search, but we want to make sure we hit the obvious points that most people would want.
Is there any way to include multiple search terms on a single field? For instance, some people write Angell Studio and some Angell-Studio, but including both in the search gives no results because it thinks we want a company called Angell Studio Angell-Studio. So if we can make the search include both separatedly that'd be pretty cool. If there is a way to do it and I'm not seeing it please correct me, haha.
Gender/Sex would be really good. I wanted to only search for MSD size girls yesterday but I noticed there was no way to filter just for them. So that's my humble suggestion.
@Yuns I asked the developer about the search. Gender is on the Character tab because it may not match the doll's sex. It's a text field so that all gender situations can be accommodated. Sex would need to be in the Information tab, but I'm not sure how to handle it. It has to be something you'd select off a list, because otherwise one person might put 'F' and another might put 'female' and so on. What would you put though if you have a male head on a female body or vice versa? I guess you could go by the doll's overall intended sex, with the options being: male/female/intersex/none. Would that be correct? Would it be too confusing?
Yes I can see where it can go confusing, but your option of 'male/female/intersex/none' under 'sex' sounds like a good solution. I don't think I'm that different from the majority of people in that I was looking to buy a female doll of a certain size, so I wanted to look at other people's profiles to see what is out there, other people would want to do the same thing for whatever sex or size they are after. Gender is a separate thing, at least within this context, and as you said it's covered under the gender field. And if someone has a male sculpt on a female body or vice versa they can use intersex, or then there are dolls of course which have no sex characteristics (especially amongst the yosd) so they can be none. I'd say keep it simple, you're still not going to get things 100 per cent no matter what, but if it's simple you have a better chance of giving the majority results back that match what people are searching for.
I have a feeling it would be too difficult and/or not feasible, but along the same lines as Yuns' suggestion, would it be possible for write-in fields like the company name to basically have auto-fill suggestions so that people are at least more likely to select existing labels? I'm not certain if it would be a coding thing on the forum side, or what, since I don't know how these things work, so I totally get if that isn't something that would be terribly... feasible. It's not like you can do a drop down for company, since there are FAR too many out there and no one would expect that kind of thing from you!
@Yuns I checked with the developer and unfortunately it's not possible to do the type of search you mentioned. In your example, searching for 'angell' would turn up both 'angell-studio' and 'angell studio', but I can see how it could be an issue for other company names. @Kendrah That's not possible, however it may be possible to add tags to doll profiles, and those could be from a preset list. Do you think that would help?
Well, it was worth a shot, haha. Thanks for checking! yeah, I used AS as it was what led me to notice that but I suppose depending on the company name there's not much one can do besides doing two searches. Another thing which I noticed, is some people write the company name in the Body field, instead of the name for the actual body (for example, Fairyland rather than, say, Minifee or Feeple60 or Iplehouse instead of EID, SID and whatnot). Can we maybe get a little explanation text near that field like we have with some of the other ones so we can all have a rule for what to write there, be it company name or body name? Unless of course I'm the only one bothered by that, haha.
I figured it was a long shot, but I had to at least bring it up. ^^ It may help, but if the tags are from a preset list I think it would be far too much work for all of you. Unless the tags are a user-generated thing? Where you can add/create your own tags and they would automatically be added to the preset list? I'm not sure how these things work, as I said...
@Yuns I could be wrong, but I think the people who put the maker in the body field don't know the name of the body, they just want to indicate that it's from the same maker as the head. Also, some makers don't have any particular name or model number for the body. @Kendrah I never hurts to bring something up! The reason tags are disabled now is that we're not sure how to handle them. It's actually not that hard to do a preset list; we'd use the list of dollmakers in the wiki. However, we'd be relying on people to let us know when to add tags for new companies. (Most likely we'd learn this from a Tumblr confession regarding their conspiracy theory about why such-and-such company was omitted...) The other way is just to let everybody do whatever tags they like. That way is more fluid, but staff would have to monitor similar tags and merge them. I also noticed that in testing, people would put the sculpt name as a tag, but that doesn't always work if multiple sculpts share the same name. It could be less useful than having a set list.
I just wanted to say that I really love this new feature and thank you to the moderators and admins of DoA for creating this for us. I think it's so much fun to be able to browse people's dolls in such a convenient way. I love reading people's thinking, planning, and stories and ideas for their doll to go along with the pictures. I think in DoA, due to the nature of the rules, I don't end up seeing much about the characters and stories behind the dolls, so that is really so nice. I hope one day we can 'favorite' people's profiles so that they're bookmarked into a collection =) . I'd love to easily be able to look back at all my favorites and share my favorites list with others! EDIT: Oh, and as for the sex category issue, I think it would be safe to stick with what I've seen other websites do for human people these days. I've seen the options be Male/Female/Other for a while. Since it's such a delicate topic, I don't think any solution would please everybody, but this seems safest. Intersex/None also seem like good options though. Thank you again, it looks really great so far, ali
Is it possible to get a randomizer? Just click a button and get 10 random dolls to look through? I would love to be able to just look at random dolls rather than look through the list of recently updated. I love this new feature, by the way, thanks for all the work you all have done to update the forum and everything!
I've added the sex field, as female/male/other. @jmlukens That's not currently possible, but I've passed the suggestion along to the developer.
I love love LOVE the doll profiles. I've discovered so many new dolls just by browsing through them! Would it be possible to maybe add a little comment section for each profile? Just something small, for a sentence or two of admiration? I'm glad we can "like" individual dolls but I think it'd be pretty neat to be able to leave a short comment as well
Of the major categories that I can think of; being able to search by body seems to be the next most general catagory.
