Hello everyone, I'm a 19 year old, residing in Singapore. I have never owned any bjds nor seen one in real-life before but am deeply fascinated by them. (I can spend hours and hours just looking at the bjd websites!) Recently, I've been really inspired by enchanteddoll and her custom made dolls and the level of effort and craftmanship put in in completing the doll, the colour, the costume and the accessories. Although I am always thinking to make one, I was always put off by how difficult making one seemed, and the lack of materials. BUT, after seeing how everyone starts from scratch and the amount of work they pump in, I've decided to try and start making one~~~~
Nihao, Shubbing, from a Singaporean living in the US. If you can get the money to, I recommend ordering Ryo Yoshida's book on making BJDs, as it's a very good book even if you don't understand Japanese. As for materials I'm using styrofoam as a core for my doll, and Japanese stone clay for the outside - it's a high-quality paper clay with mineral content for strength, if I understand correctly. If you're content with your dolls being one-of-a-kind workpieces, then you won't really have to go past the clay-and-foam materials, as that's what Ryo Yoshida uses for his. If you intend to cast them in resin or sculpt them in porcelain then it's a bit trickier. - Mel
