International Doll and Teddy Show, Asheville NC 2017

May 22, 2017

    1. Hello!
Im wondering if anyone would be attending this doll conference/show this year. I would love to meet up with someone, as I will be flying solo. Has anyone ever attended? Any advice? I also have booked a room, if anyone needs a roommate! Im super excited to be able to meet many of the artist as well as super excited about the show room!

    2. I've never herd of it. I live in South Carolina and would love to know about doll shows nearish. Do you have a link to their web site? :kitty1

    3. Oh yeah, I almost forgot about this! I go to university in Asheville, but I'm home for the summer now... I wonder if I'll be able to go up for a couple of days? Would be good fun. When is it, again?

    4. I used to live down the mountain from Asheville, its cool to hear that they have that type of event there. I wonder how much the city has built up/ changed since I lived there last.

    5. I'm not *too* far away. I've been considering going Saturday and Sunday, but I'm just so nervous about it!

    6. I live just down the mountain, about two hours away, and I've been the last two years. It's very fun, though I went on Friday last year and one artist was already sold out at opening time. :huh?: I did get my Asella sweetie and a Linda Macario last year, so I can't complain too much. My mom takes the time to get special dolls from artists we may not have.

The show is a very casual and fun show. Most if not all accept credit cards and checks so you don't have to carry too much cash. I only had one dealer (the artist's husband?) get pushy about just looking and wanting to take photos. Of course, don't touch without asking first. Previous years, there were more dolls than extras, but Jpop always brings wigs and shoes in addition to extra dolls. This year, there are some booths looking to have eyes and casting supplies too. The major problem is that you really, really need to go on Friday. The first year, I went on Saturday and almost everything from artists was sold out. Well, that and there aren't any restaurants right by the place.

I'll be coming in a group with some members of my local doll club on Friday, but I'll be the girl with real long hair dressed fancy. Last year, I was in sweet Axes Femme and the previous I went gothic lolita.

    7. I attended last year and it was a very nice show. It is always nice to meet all the other artists. :) When you go, you won't be alone...so many friendly faces! Have fun!

    8. I have no money this month so I'm not going :(

    9. I might go one of the days since I'm just an hour or two away. :)

    10. Who was sold out, do you remember? That is my biggest concern considering Im flying all the way from Wisconsin (which is a huge cost attending the show).

      International Doll Show

Im super excited! The show is nearing & at this point my biggest concern is food LOL and dolls selling out fast.

    11. Kardenchiki Originals and Nancy Latham were both sold out pre-opening. I'm still sore about that.

Other sellers...they generally still had dolls. It really depends on the artist. Creamsoda last year only had a couple kits, Jpop brings extras but generally only one of each (plus extra wigs and shoes), and the Marbled Halls, Twisted Wicket, and Val's Rag Patch have so much and are pretty laid back. I forget which artist doll my mom got, but she wasn't thrilled about the clothes and they switched the clothes to ones she liked.

    12. To me that doesn't seem very much fair... how can they be sold out before even opening??? I think I too would be sore especially flying half across the country and spending as much money as I am to be there... thank you for replying!

    13. That's my concern as well. This will be my very first doll show and I know nothing. Does anyone have tips other than go as early as possible? Like how much money is recommended to have, will anyone take their doll with them to carry, what is the proper etiquette. Help! Haha. Also to make sure, they sell the tickets at the door right?
Thank you for any help. ^.^

    14. Go as early as possible on Friday. They open at...11? 10? Trust me, there will be a line.

You do buy tickets at the door (cash only previous years), and you will get a little bag with map, info, and maybe things like lip gloss and pens. It's very useful for throwing in the business cards and other freebies you may get. One year, a dealer gave out toy sheep as gifts.

There look to be "cheaper items" at this show with the eye company and the casting supplies, but everyone I bought from accepted checks and credit cards. At least one vendor (Creamsoda) accepted paypal. This is a show my family saves up for a year before hand.

Some people do bring their own dolls (one person looking for wigs, others showing off their reborns), but most North Carolina shows do not allow outside dolls (to avoid people selling without buying a booth). I...guess it would be okay? I won't be bringing one because, even with my dad sitting in the "husband check area" to guard our packages, it will probably be one more thing to juggle and carry.

Otherwise, be polite. Don't touch dolls without asking. Pretty much, only ask if you are seriously considering getting her (or him or it). If you are curious about something, just ask. The artists generally love to chat. I always ask before taking photos. There will be many, many people wandering around and talking because, for some artists, this is one of the few times they get to see each other. Getting through some areas will be difficult. Otherwise, it really depends. When I wanted to buy wigs for the Jpop dolls I was getting, they had no problem letting me try the wigs to see what size would fit them.

Fun story time: Tonner was there one year, and I kept eyeing a basic Deja Vu girl. Me and my red hair weakness. One of the people running the booth was showing off the doll and the design choices, and I gave in. As he brought it over to the cash register, he asked if I wanted him to sign the doll. And that's how I met Robert Tonner.

    15. Thank you for the advice and reply. It makes me even more excited to go now. I wished I knew about it sooner so funds could have been saved, but this is a good chance to check it out and prepare for next year. I hope everyone one that goes has a wonderful time. XD

    16. Wish I was going!!! I think the only doll shows in my area at any time were some Robert Tonner conventions and one time UFDC was here. I wish these conventions were more centrally located. It's easier to get to for the majority of collectors that way. JMO.

    17. Rose, the same goes for me. This is actually a really big leap of faith for me as I will be flying half across the country for this show specifically! I am praying that all sellers are fair and will only sell at time of opening first to paying customers (ex: people who buy tickets vs other artists). In total the trip alone will cost me $600 (flight and hotel alone - not including food or taxi).

    18. I'm hoping to go to the show! I will probably only be there on Friday and will have a bjd with me--likely my green Doll Chateau Jason. :)

    19. Hope you are having a wonderful time today! I can't wait to see what you got at the show!

    20. I hope everyone had a great time at the show! It was fun seeing all those beautiful dolls and animals.:kitty1

    21. Hope everyone enjoyed ID&TS! I didn't purchase anything except for a raffle ticket, but I enjoyed seeing all the amazing dolls/art!

I was wondering, though, did anyone else get a little doll head with their bag that was handed out when you bought your ticket? I wasn't sure if everyone who attended got them or if the goodies in the bag were random. I was pleasantly surprised to get a doll head! I want to get a body for mine now, but I don't know what sort of character to make with her. :whee: If you got a doll head, too, what are your plans for it?

Did anyone purchase a doll at the show? I'd love to see photos if you'd like to share! :D Thank you!

    22. On Friday, I was the girl with the cat headband and coord.

Yep, everyone got a doll head. I believe from Berdine Credi? I'll need to find a good scale body to fit, but I have no plans yet. My mom and I both got one, so I'm also tempted to custom one.

I'll admit to being naughty. Hopefully I'll get the pictures up soon. Only counting bjds, I got one of the pink sheep Lalas. My family managed to get some grail dolls from Nancy Latham and another artist, so happy times.

I overheard that, next year, the show will be in Florida. Noooo.....

    23. I am really going to try hard to get there next year in Florida. It is ideal for extending a trip to Disney with the family.

    24. By the way, does anyone have pictures from the show?

    25. Oh, yes! Please post photos! I hate that I missed this show.

    26. I wish I took more photos, but here are a few!

    27. I had an amazing time even though I was there for only a short amount of time. I ended up adopting lots of sweet hearts while at the show.

      1. Nikki Britts Luna Lovegood (Wendy 18inch)
      2. Nikki Britts Harry Potter (Adeline)
      3. Meadowdolls Patti
      4. Nikki Britts Ellabella Giant Size
      5. Nikki Britts Tutti Frutti
      6. Non BJD doll

I went to the show anticipating I would be adopting a lot from Nikki Britt as she is my absolute favorite artist! Im really glad I was able to attend and hope to attend Orlando next year!

    28. Anyone know when registration begins for next year's IDTS in Orlando?
