Info to help avoid Bootleg dolls

Aug 12, 2008

    1. I am looking to buy a BJD and I know there are some sites that offer lay away plan. What companies are immitators and what are the real site? I don't want to purchase a doll from a bootleg site that would be sad :(

    2. I'm not sure there is a list like this.

      The best way to do this would be to check which sites are good rather than bad. For example, there are many dealers/websites which offer really poor service even though they are genuine and send out real dolls. Although they aren't fake, you wouldn't want to use them.

      So if you find a site you think you would like to use, look for feedback on here (should be easy using the search function) to check how happy people are with them.

      Good luck with your search for the perfect doll for you ^^

    3. Alright thanks alot! I just don't want to buy from a bootlegger ;-;

    4. The more you're involved in this hobby, looking around and such, you'll know more about what's true and what's not. :)

    5. The best way to know if you aren't familiar with the various companies and shops is to find the doll you like, then search for the name of the webshop or eBay seller on DoA and see what comes up. If there's no result, you can always post a question on the Buying and Shipping Q&A Subforum to ask if anyone has heard of them before. There are so many doll companies and doll sellers around now that it can be difficult to keep track of them all even if you've been in the hobby for ages, but almost everything is listed on DoA. It can also be a good way to determine whether legit sites have good or poor customer service, as has been mentioned above.

      If you want to avoid bootlegs, you can also check the banned dolls and companies list on DoA, as there's at least a partial list of companies known to make bootleg copies in there. And even if the doll you look at is a bootleg, the silver lining is that then you can find out what the original company and sculpt were and look for the legit version :)

      Good luck with your doll shopping! :aheartbea

    6. Here's the list of banned dolls

      There aren't many bootleg companies about, so you are very unlikely to run into one accidentally. The bootleg companies mostly sell on ebay when they do pop up.

      If you see a doll you like, you might want to look at the company reviews section. Although I don't think there are any terrible companies out there, they do run into the odd problem with shipping times and the like. Same with some of the company representatives (e.g. some Dollzone dealers).

    7. Have the link to the list of doll companies been removed?

    8. It's been moved to the wiki!
      Banned Dolls

      ETA: Ooops, I thought you meant the link to the banned companies. xD; Bubble Gum Goth points out where the other list went in the post below mine. xD;;;

    9. The Companies list has been moved, they closed the links page. I moved it. Click on the picture in my signature, it will take you there.
