Info on: MSC vs Games Workshop Purity seal for doll owners

Jan 19, 2011

1. I didn't realize Citadel didn't have any UV protection. Thanks for telling me. :)
Although, since I live in jolly old England I shouldn't have to worry too much about the sun because it's usually over-cast.

A DZ Jian Ning Fullset in normal skin. She has only about a week left now till she arrives and she is all I can think about. X]

2. So I tried Purity seal, I liked it well enough, not as much tooth as MSC or ZM spray but significantly more than Testors.

But here's the odd thing I had a moderate allergic reaction after using it, ichy arms/neck and slightly puffy/ichy eyes. Had protective gear on (gloves, respirator, goggles) was in a well ventilated place too. I've never had an allergic reaction to MSC, ZM spray or Testors.

Anyone else have this?
Very odd, so as nice as it is to use (good sized can for the money) I sadly don't think I'll use it again. :(

3. I think it has more tooth then msc lol. I get itchy if it get it one me but I'm alergic to the wax.

4. hehe! good to know, it may be that for me too!. thanks!

5. No; that's the same pic that they use on the Games Workshop site, but not what the can actually looks like. In reality it's gray, and I don't think there's even a logo on it - it's just all text and warning labels. :?

Best thing to do is ask the seller for the part code. The one you want is: 13209999028 It's located near the barcode on the back.

I'd also recommend using the store finder to see if you can find a place near you that stocks it. It'll save you on shipping.

6. I'll add to this that if you store dolls in boxes and you're not running A/C all day while you're out of the house, heat can build up in the boxes, especially if you're using the lovely polyester pillows below and above the doll. Remove the top pillow and "crack" the lid so some air can move. I've had doll parts age faster in closed boxes than sitting out in the open room.

7. Just to throw my 2c in. If you UV cut on your head but don't spray the body as well you may have the head and body yellow at slightly different rates. Just something to keep in mind. I'd say if you're not spraying the whole doll, don't opt for UV (in which case PS would be fine).

8. Yellowing happens because the resin is never done changing. Sealing your doll ALL of it not just the face helps stop the oxidation but it will still happen. The sun effects are the pigments reacting to uv though uv cut sealants won't stop this any more then high spf sunscreen stops cancer. Heat hurts your dolls alot. If you keep them even in the car on a hot day you'll notice they smell stronger then normal. That's a chemical process that releases gasses. It's like baking a cake. Your doll right now is only half done. If you expose it to heat it will finish cooking.

I have seen some bleaching techniques that work well on the surface as touch ups and help keep that look longer but truth be told... it happens. They age just as we do and hopefully as we age together we notice there age spots and appriciate them as good wrinkles.

9. I easily found stores in the city (NYC) selling the Purity Seal, via the Games Workshop store locator. While in for September's doll meet, I stopped at the store nearest on my route to the meet location and bought the Purity Seal as well as a cheaper version (shows a cartoon on the front).

I'll be trying both out later this month, as soon as I get my window project area cleared and prepped for doing faceups!

10. I'm curious - does anyone here have any experience with Purity Seal and cold? I'm curious if the stuff would perform better in 30degrees F or less than MSC. Or if I still need to figure out a different method of spraying...

11. I haven't ever tried to do a faceup in weather that cold (where do you live?). Maybe you could ask around on a Warhammer forum. They might have more experience.

12. It works but you need to do a little trick. Put the spray can in a tub of really warm water. Not boiling you need to be able to touch it. Leave it there for about a minuet. Make sure the surface your spraying is warm as well. So if your house is toasty warm in the winter that's fine. Take the item outside and spray quickly! Then bring it back inside and blow dry it from about 2 feet away for a minuet or two. This way the sealant never gets cold at all. It's not as strong smelling as MSC and not nearly as toxic so you don't have to worry about the venting fumes much.

13. Oh, thank you! I'm using MSC right now and it's being really, really tricky. It flakes off easily and I'm thinking it's because of the cold. It sounds like Purity Seal might be easier to work with, so I figured it was worth asking. Now to just find an online store to get some...anyone know of any?

(I live in high-mountain Colorado - winter is just beginning and it is snowing right now...and it will only get colder from here on out xD)

14. Can I urge caution on heating an aerosol can. If heated beyond a certain termperature, the propellant will expand, causing the can to explode or for a flash fire to start. Now, I suspect the heat needed would be quite extreme (I have read somewhere that it would need to be 127 C, but there seems to be lots of conflicting information on this). I would therefore play safe and place it in water that is no hotter than body temperature. That should still get it going sufficiently.

15. That's why I always say not boiling and make sure your comfortable placing your hand in the water. If it's not hot enough to scald you it's fine for the cat. Your only getting the contents up to around 80 degrees in one minuet of 95 degree water (highschool science project lol with a paint can). It won't explode. Never directly heat any can for any reason. If you place it in a heat source or near one directly it will explode due to being heated unevenly. A hot bowl of water is ok though.

16. I will try that, as well as the let-it-dry-inside thing. ^^ And I want to try Purity Seal too. I live nowhere near a city big enough to have a gamer store, so I'm attempting to find online sources to get it... <---currenly googling.

edit: this is the right stuff right? xD

17. Yes that is the stuff. You can also find it in a dark blue can. Just make sure it is Purity Seal not the matt varnish. I'm not sure but I think the other sealant may have damaged my doll some. Purity seal is fine though so please don't be afraid. We were experimenting with a varnish that may be going off the market and it was yucky to use any way lol. It made testors seem thin.

18. Just bought a can from a Games Workshop and the owner of the store gave me some more pointers about the can that may be helpful. He said to spray it in very short bursts-- much shorter than you would with MSC, for instance. He said that if it dries cloudy, the weather is too cold. If it dries dusty, the weather is too hot. He said wind is bad because it sucks the moisture out of the spray and will contribute to dustiness. The coat only needs a few seconds to dry-- keep each coat very light. He also said that spraying in a garage is fine-- you just need a very controlled environment.

19. Oh hey - I just realized that you can get Purity Seal in the USA at The Junky Spot (the same place I bought my MSC from). Oh happy days! That makes things sooo much easier for me ^^

20. Can someone tell me if there is something similar to msc but in liquid form. I want to paint nails of dolls without having to coat the entire hand.

Thanks.

21. liquitex gloss or citadel acriligloss are paint on sealers for small areas

22. The brand of acrylic paints, Golden, makes bottles of "Polymer Varnish" in matte, satin, and gloss finishes, and the bottles say they have UV protection. The bottles are plastic squeeze bottles. I squeeze out a bit and use them for lips, over acrylic painted areas, etc., with a fine brush.

23. Thanks I will take a look at those products.

24. Here are two face-ups done completely in Purity Seal:

I've been using it since November and love it. I'm going to transition over to using it as my primary sealant because I love being able to do high color face-ups with less layers, and having such a hardy sealant protecting my work.

25. This makes me so glad I got my mum to snag me a can of Purity Seal over christmas. She and I are going to attempt to do all my dolls face ups this year... I have MSC but since all but my animal dolls are either tanned or fantasy skinned at the minute, Purity seal was the better option according to this thread due to it not whitening the skin like MSC does.

Chienism, those face ups are lovely!

26. Hi all. I'm glad I found this thread as i've been trying to find a substitute for MSC for a while. I went into a Games Workshop today and asked about purity seal. They only had a satin one in stock, the guy said they don't do the matt version anymore. Can anybody tell me if they have used the satin spray and also how shiny does it come out?

Thank you!

27. Not Shiney at all. It's all I use. Just like MSC don't spray too close and it won't shine.

28. Thank you! I went and ordered some testors dullcote but i'll pop back into the shop and get some purity seal. I'm planning on giving my doll a full make over so will test each to see which is best (i'm thinking the purity will be :D ) Thanks again!

29. I am in the USA and clicked the top link. After choosing USA from the page, it brought me to this:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat470015a&prodId=prod1200065&_requestid=2497381

Citadel Matt Varnish Spray. Is this the same product? I am saving up for a new doll that I want do mod and do my own face-up on. So I will be needing some kind of good sealer.

Thanks!!

30. I don't know if the Blue label can is available in the States. Over the summer I bought the sealant using the store-locator function of the site mentioned earlier in this thread, and found 3 stores in NYC that carried it. This is the label I have:

And there's a guy on ebay selling it too (He's in KY):
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...akeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en
(I used his picture since I don't have good lighting set up here tonight, but I did save/rename the photo rather than hotlinking. I matched my label to this and it's identical.)

31. Thank you! I'll definitely be using this product when the time comes then, as it will be easier (and less expensive) to get than MSC. Now that I have read this entire thread, I am convinced this is a quality product! I can't wait to try, it will be my first face-up!

Gotta get the doll first though. LOL!

32. You can only buy actual purity seal in the us if you phisicaly go to a store. you can't get it online from gws. Matte varnish isn't the same thing and does damage the resin. I used it to test and it was horrible.

33. You can get it from the Junky Spot though, so it IS possible to get it online in the USA ^^

34. So it this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370577543095&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en#ht_1368wt_1037

Not the right thing? It does say Matte in the description. I just want to be sure I get the correct spray as I am NOT willing to ruin a doll I have saved up for. :P

35. Why not ask the ebay seller directly if he's shipping it? Besides, over the last two years I've ordered the Volks coating spray from Volks USA in California and it was mailed to me in NY.

Ask the Warhammer website if you can get the blue label can in the US. All I've found in the US is the white label with mostly lettering. That's the exact label of what I've been using and it's fine. You just have to make sure you apply it in thin sweeps. There are a number of people's tips earlier in this thread.

Check earlier posts in this thread for tips in application techniques and results - 41, 42, 44, 54, 55, 61 - post 85 shows a pic by another US buyer that shows the highly lettered white label - post 93. Check what Junkyspot is selling, as it's mentioned that he is selling Purity Seal in the US too. You could also as Kitkaze, who posted earlier in this thread about getting it and she's in CT.

36. My husband is a Games Workshopaholic so I am SO getting me some purity seal!

37. Thank you to everybody who posted on this thread. It was very helpful. I'm about to go out and fetch some Purity Seal for extra protection on some almost completed body blushes. And after looking at your beautiful face-ups chienism, I will be excited to try it out (with MSC as well, as I've heard you explain before) with my next face-ups. (I am just going to make sure to check the humidity through the weather forecast before I do any work with this product) I will come back here after I've tried it out to add any new feedback. :)

38. Silly Question: Does it matter which label the can has? JunkySpot has the blue can, and iut says "Matte" on the can. Is this the one to get, or is it the one Glow says can do damage to the doll?

Also, does Purity Seal work in the winter? Or is it as finicky as Testors?

39. To Everyone:

Wrong or Right Can: Yes the above picture is the right one. It does say Matte on it but it isn't the "regular" spray I described that will damage the doll. If it says PURITY SEAL it is the right one. The other varnish doesn't say purity seal any where on the can.

Winter: Yes it works well in the winter. I have worked with it alot this year in 27 to 8 degree weather. Make sure the can is warm and the body or head are warm. Spray quickly outside then run back inside. It has a low fume so it doesn't stick with the doll.

Online sales: I ment to say that you can't buy it from games workshop online not from anyone. You can find anything from a broker.

BLUE label or WHITE label?: They are identical items. I can get both at my store. I have a can of both the labels are exactly alike down to the last ingrediant. It is simply two different styles for uk vs us.

40. Glow n dark - Thank you so much for the explanation! It really helps. :)

----

Edited to add: I did send a message to the seller on ebay and this was the reply,
"We do not recommend use on resin. Not sure if it is satin or matte. To our knowledge this is matte."

So, I think I will try Junkyspot instead since this seller says they do not recommend it to be used on resin. Just trying to be super careful to get the correct kind of spray. Guess I am being overly cautious, but still. Ruining a pricey doll is not what I want to do!

Anyway, thanks again for the clarification Glow n dark!

41. Brilliant, thank you so much for the explanation, Glow! That was super helpful! ♥

42. Another good way to be sure that you have the right can is to check the product code. It should be located next to the barcode, on the back.

The can I have looks like the one Hobbywhelmed posted, so the code should be: 13 20 99 99 028

43. Wow, this thread has been super helpful. O:
I was looking high and low for some MSC {I ordered the ZM spray from Volks and had to pay more than the total cost of the products for shipping e___e}, but GW Canada says there's a retailer that carries things very close to my home \o/
So now it's only to pop in and see if they have the Purity Seal, haha.

44. I've used twice in the past days, works perfectly, gives a satin finish touch, which is better for the vibrant colors :)
I can say that you can buy it easily off some Games workshop
I've read also some good reviews about the Army painter sealant, that is definitely matt.

45. How shiny is the satin? The only experience I have with anything with a satin finish is black spray paint and...that was very metallic.
Does it depend on how much you spray/the number of coats?

46. It's not shiny if you spay from a distance in light coats.

Don't use the matt army painter! I did have doll damage when experimenting with it. It also takes forever to dry.

47. Ahhh, okay. Thanks! I'm really bad at spraying so it'll probably take some time for me to get a face on my doll properly, haha.

Yeah, I went to my local Hero's World and they didn't have the Purity Seal :( the guy recommended the Matt Army Painter and I Noped my way out of there, haha.
On the upside a local-ish mall is getting some MSC next week...but I'd still love to get my hands on some Purity Seal instead, haha.

48. I'd keep calling places until you find someone who carries it. If not, you might be able to ask them to order it for you.

49. I found a store near my place and called, and they said they'd have the Purity Seal by later next week \o/ so it's just a matter of waiting!

50. Captain you can try to get it online from workshopgames directly :)
As for the army painter: i've checked the can and honestly i don't see difference in them, basing at very least on the label.
I will try on an head the army painter and then let you know.I had once a blythe face ruined by msc so i guess that any sealant could be just wrong if used in the wrong way.Take also note that both, citadel and army painter, are both made for the same use so it's strange that one works while another don't. :sweat

51. Army painter sprays on thicker so it dries slower leaving the acetone on the resin longer and trapping it in small bubbles.

52. I've read good reviews of army painter on warcraft boards, they said that testor dullcote is basicly very similiar to army painter, also it's suggested to spray in thin coats cause otherwise army painter could create the frost/mist effect once dried.Every sealant contains acetone, surely army painter needs to be used with an accurate technique.
I had serious issue with msc the few times that i've used,no issue with citadel,i will try with army painter and then post a review :)

53. I'm just placing the warning out there. My doll was severally damaged by army painter.

54. $abbatha, I would but they don't seem to have it in the online shop in Canada? Or I may be simply too blind to see it, haha.
And I'd really rather not pay shipping if I can find the material locally XD
But I can't wait. My boy needs a face!

55. :( that's a shame..another dear friend of mine is located in Canada..and she said to me that workshop games closed in Canada..at this point better to check directly the local store..perhaps off ebay some sells citadel?

56. $abbatha, really? If she lives in Toronto, there's a Games Workshop shop at Yonge and Lawrence-ish, and they're open because I called and asked if they had Purity Seal - and they said that they're restocking, so they do carry it for sure.
Otherwise she can always try running through the store locator on the website? There were several GW shops plus several other places that carried their products \o/

See when I was looking through the MSC thread waaaaay long time ago there was this confusion about importing aerosol/cans and how things can get seized, etc., so I have no clue what I can import/order e___e

57. Captain thanks so much for the infos!!!I will share with my friend :D
In any case is the same here in EU..it's impossible to import can, marely cause the can can explode during the air transportation, and also some components of these sealant are illegal in EU =_____=
Anyway $avage tested the army painter, see the link to her discussion thread, and so far no damage is visible.

58. $abbatha - oooh, really? D: can you import it from the UK? Or is it still illegal because of the ingredients?
And no probs! I hope she finds some places nearby :'Db

I only have one head though :sweat so I'm rather loath to possibly messing it up. /shot
