Indoor Photography

Mar 29, 2020

    1. Hi all! I've been slowly learning how to use my boyfriend's camera to take pictures of my dolls. I haven't gone anywhere but out on my patio and places in my house. I've played with fabric/paper backdrops/lights a bit indoors trying to get some decent shots.

What do you guys find is best for indoor photos? I have some "natural lights" I use and good indirect light, and I'm not quite looking to buy or make anything for it right now.

Rather, I want to know what helps with interesting backgrounds that make satisfying photos? I hope that makes sense.

Here is my SD girl and I find it even more challenging since she's so big.

This girl is on my dollshelf with some moss taped to the wall, haha.

All your photos are so inspiring so I welcome any critque/feedback/advice! Thanks for looking <3

    2. I think if you're doing close up photos any solid background will work. It's when things are cluttered in back of even on the sides that can distract from the subject. I think your two samples are wonderful and your doing a great job.

    3. Thank you! I agree with that for sure. I've been wanting to take more full-body photos and that's where I am struggling for sure.

    4. Go to Flickr and see what others do. Some people I follow are so creative and one woman called Antique Lilac shares how she does her indoor and outdoor photos. I couldn't find her on Flickr, she's more on Facebook. But here is her website.

    7. Love the moss to fit your sweet deer-girl’s theme. Looks like you are already experimenting with texture and I love the lighting in those two shots.

I’m no expert but I’ll just blab my bit here in case it gives you any ideas:

What about having a look around your home not just with an eye for something to put your doll in front of, but things you can place her amongst? Layers of objects in the image (like foreground-doll-background) can add more interest even if the objects themselves are blurred. If that doesn’t spark any inspiration, what about playing with some forced perspective to make ‘props’ out of human-size things? Your big girl touching the lights is neat. Maybe there are other ways to make them interact with the environment?

    8. I'm not an expert but, I think your photos are fantastic!

    9. For me I've noticed that the background matters much less than the doll itself, having a good pose and a nicely lit, in focus shot with a bokeh background will look good nomatter what the background is. I've taken photos in front of a wall of art, in front of my desktop monitor, in random spots in my room, near or in my plants, or in front of blank walls. I personally think the key to a good background inside is not to really have one- to put the focus on the doll. Use a low fstop number so whatever is behind is nicely blurred and non distracting. Ideally with mellow pleasant blocks of color and no solidly recognizable shapes (for instance, pictures on my back patio rarely turn out nice cause drab grey and distinct bars, same with pictures facing my couch).

    10. Thanks for the advice and examples! They are really super appreciated. I took it to heart and tried a desk shot in my apartment.
