In need of some critique...

Feb 26, 2015

    1. Edit: I know that I said that I've finished him, But I wanted some second opinions on him again.

      I have done more work on him, I finally got the eye shape that I am happy with

      Please let me know does he look "Finished" or could there be more work done on him?

      Here is a new updated Photo of him. I airbrushed him all over in a very matte light gray paint so that his sculpt is easier to see.

      I've done small mods and a mouth restoration before other wise my experience with sculpting a whole face is limited.

      I am using a SD-sized JungaToy base head to sculpt on, using Super Sculpey Firm. He is unfinished.
      I would appreciate any suggestions or tips from more experienced members.
      Thank you.

    2. Do you have more photos at different angles? For now what I can say based on this one photo is that it looks rather flat, like you sculpted a face in relief instead of in 3D, but I suspect that's due to the material/camera flattening it out. The shape of the nose, mouth, and brow look rather good too but they somehow don't look integrated into the overall face, hence the flat-face effect-- I would suggest giving the head/jaw a more defined shape to fix this, because while the individual features are well-defined, the face itself isn't. A little asymmetry is good here and there as well, I wouldn't worry too much about it because it doesn't look crazy crooked or anything, just quite pleasant and human.

    3. I admit it's not a very good photo..... But I can take more.
      The harsh lighting is washing out the details and I'm guessing that the perfectionist in me is being self-conscious about my work. ^^;;

    4. Ok! Here are more photos!

      Some of them are a but washed out, not sure what happened with my camera.

    5. That's looking great! It's odd how much the photos make it seem flat (like especially the bottom left one) but it's obviously not when seen from other angles. Really looking quite good - symmetrical, pretty good anatomy-wise, a very nice looking face. Needs ears and more detailing around the eyes (eyelid, inner corner, etc.) but other than that, I think it's great! :)

    6. Agreed, it looks great! And not flat at all, I might add. That profile is beautiful :D the only suggestion I have is maybe to curve the profile of the philtrum a bit, to my eye it looks slightly severe to have it straight, but it is a stulistic preference. Please do post again when he is further along! I am curious what eye shape you will go for.

    7. ok, The shape of the eyes is a comeing along no ears yet,

      But was looking at him and It seems to my eyes that after boiling the supersculpey firm, the head kinda.....shrank a bit? I made it with the face of Peroth in mind.....I was kinda wounder if anyone would take a look, I need a second opinion on this.

      Anyways, here is a photo of the head as it is now, along with Peroth on the left and VOlks Maki on the right.

    8. I don't think the sizing is too far off from the other head. You haven't added ears yet so it will seem a little bit bigger when you do as they'll add width. But people have different sized heads and faces - my older sister has a tiny little head while I have a giant melon, and we're both similar in height and build otherwise. So I wouldn't worry too much about it. They still look in roughly the same scale as each other.

    9. Super sculpey is supposed to shrink only about up to 2%, I believe? I agree that adding ears will add more volume. I am enjoying the strong profile!

    10. And here is the finished Head,

      I've had to restart on a few things, but I've kept his nose and brow shape.

      The Original photos are here on my DA page: http://elysion-gear.deviantart.com/art/BlackTea-is-finished-542499536?ga_submit_new=10%253A1435436423&ga_type=edit&ga_changes=1&ga_recent=1

      The white paint is completely washable, it's just there so that I have an easier time of seeing where I needed to refine and sand.
      Yes, the paint is kinda uneven. ^^;;;

      I will be giving him a (painted) face-up soon.

    11. Congratulations! Your head has developed quite a lot from the initial sculpt, I think you have made quite a progress. The face seems a bit more mature. I especially like the shape of the eyes and the lips. He seems to have a little smirk …

    12. eviessanctum;(very belated) Thank you! I am very pleased with how he turned out. Hours upon hours of careful sculpting and sanding. *lol* The sculpt name is called "Black Tea" but character-wise, He's gonna be my Sebastian Michealis, (a character that I have always wanted a BJD of but never found a face that I really liked in any of the current companies.)

    13. Great work! Very nice finish and I like the shape of the eyes. Turned out really good.

    14. He's turned out quite handsome! I like how angular he is.

    15. updated the first post with new updated photo.
